Bernal Mendoza, Julio Enrique, Martinez Sacsara, Paul Claudio 25 November 2021 (has links)

Yagui Kaqui, Akemi Carolina 09 October 2020 (has links)
This thesis provides information that supports the board game Manada as a proposal for the exercise of memory in elderly people. The name of the proposal, “Herd”, arises after taking the elephant as a representative element and associating it with the idea of group. Memory impairment is one of the cognitive changes that elderly people experience, and one that generates the most concern, due to the connection with identity and autonomy. The research seeks to improve the experience of memory exercise through a proposal based on the activities observed in the CIAMs. Faced with this need for resources, it is proposed to integrate exercises in a playful format and an attractive game mechanic. It is proven that cognitive stimulation can reduce impairment and improve skills; likewise, skills that are not practiced deteriorate. The results show a positive response regarding the reception of the proposal and the choice of the topic of medicinal plants. The board game was described as interesting and entertaining; being, not only the exercise of memory, but also learning, the most valued attribute. User tests not only allow the improvement of the proposal and verification of the degree of acceptance; but also, they confirm its potential as an alternative for cognitive stimulation.

“Chemical fingerprinting” of volcanic tephra found in Kansas using trace elements

David, Brian T. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Geology / Matthew W. Totten / Sedimentary beds rich in volcanic ash have been reported throughout Kansas. It is believed the source of these ashes are the large-scale eruptions from the Yellowstone Calderas. Very few of these ash units have been dated, however, and the vast majority simply reported as “Pearlette Ash.” The objective of this research was to investigate the potential of trace element geochemistry in correlating individual ash outcrops in Kansas to their eruptive source. Thirty-six previously reported ash occurrences of unknown age in Kansas were reoccupied and sampled. In addition, three unreported ash deposits were discovered and sampled. Two ash units previously identified as Huckleberry Ridge-aged and three as Lava Creek B were also collected. The samples were processed using the method of Hanan and Totten (1998) to concentrate ash shards. These ash concentrates were analyzed for specific trace and rare earth element (REE) concentrations using inductively coupled mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS) at the University of Kansas. The ash samples from known eruptions have distinct trace and REE signatures, allowing comparison to the unknown ash units. Most of the unknown ash samples correlate with specific Yellowstone eruptions. The majority of the undifferentiated “Pearlette Ash” samples correlate with the most recent Lava Creek B eruption and several unknown ashes correlate to the Huckleberry Ridge eruption. The distribution of ash units in Kansas being dominated by Lava Creek (0.60 ma) is expected because it is the most recent of the Yellowstone eruptions. The abundance of the older Huckleberry Ridge (2.10 ma) over the more recent Mesa Falls (1.27 ma) is likely the result of the much larger Huckleberry Ridge eruption.

Looking Outward from the Village: The Contingencies of Soil Moisture on the Prehistoric Farmed Landscape near Goodman Point Pueblo

Brown, Andrew D 08 1900 (has links)
Ancestral Pueblo communities of the central Mesa Verde region (CMVR) became increasingly reliant on agriculture for their subsistence needs during Basketmaker III (BMIII) through Terminal Pueblo III (TPIII) (AD 600–1300) periods. Researchers have been studying the Ancestral Pueblo people for over a century using a variety of methods to understand the relationships between climate, agriculture, population, and settlement patterns. While these methods and research have produced a well-developed cultural history of the region, studies at a smaller scale are still needed to understand the changes in farming behavior and the distribution of individual sites across the CMVR. Soil moisture is the limiting factor for crop growth in the semi-arid region of the Goodman Watershed in the CMVR. Thus, I constructed the soil moisture proxy model (SMPM) that is on a local scale and focuses on variables relevant to soil moisture – soil particle-size, soil depth, slope, and aspect. From the SMPM output, the areas of very high soil moisture are assumed to represent desirable farmland locations. I describe the relationship between very high soil moisture and site locations, then I infer the relevance of that relationship to settlement patterns and how those patterns changed over time (BMIII – TPIII). The results of the model and its application help to clarify how Ancestral Pueblo people changed as local farming communities. The results of this study indicates that farmers shifted away from use of preferred farmland during Terminal Pueblo III, which may have been caused by other cultural factors. The general outcome of this thesis is an improved understanding of human-environmental relationships on the local landscape in the CMVR.

The Use of Faunal Remains for Identifying Shifts in Pit Structure Function in the Mesa Verde Region: a Case Study From Goodman Point

Winstead, Christy 08 1900 (has links)
The archaeofaunal remains left by the Ancestral Puebloan people of Goodman Point Unit provides a valuable, yet underutilized resource into pit structure function. This thesis explores temporal changes in pit structure use and evaluates if a final feast occurred during a kiva decommissioning. The results from zooarchaeological analyses of a pithouse and two great kivas suggest that changes in pit structures at Goodman Point mimic the regional trend toward specialization until late Pueblo III. Cross-cultural studies on feasts, southwest ethnographies and previous zooarchaeological work established methods for identifying a feast. The analysis of differences in faunal remains from a great kiva and multiple room block middens imply that the remains in the kiva were from a final feast prior to a decommissioning ceremony and were not fill. Spatially and temporally the great kiva appears to be a unique, specialized structure in the cultural development of the Goodman Point community.

Cama, mesa e banho: desenvolvimento de materiais e processos têxteis, design e moda no Brasil (1976 - 2017) / Trousseau (Home Fashion): development of materials and textile processes, design and fashion in Brazil (1976 - 2017)

Laktim, Mariana Costa 30 August 2018 (has links)
The trousseau has been known since antiquity and has undergone a series of modifications, reflected in the type of fabric, confection, design, fashion and market share. These changes were also influenced by the changing position of women in society. The present study aimed to study the development of the bed, table and bathroom sector in Brazil, from 1976 to 2017, in terms of market, materials and textile processes, design and fashion. The methodology consisted of a survey of Casa Vogue Brasil and Casa Claudia magazines from 1977 to 2017 for the study and analysis of textile materials, designs and brands in the bed, table and bathroom sector based on images and texts. In addition, on the basis of the main reports related to the textile and clothing industry and other literature, research was carried out on the processes and machinery for the production of bed, table and bath and market aspects of this sector. Finally, interviews were conducted with companies in the bed, table and bathroom sector. The classic textile materials and designs are crisp in style presentation preference. In terms of trade, there were major changes in the Brazilian market from 1976 to 2017. At the beginning of this period the highlights were department stores and, over the years, companies were creating their space with highlights in the brands. The most prominent brands in the last two decades (2000 and 2010) of Casa Vogue Brasil magazine were Trousseau, Trussardi and the multi-brand department store Mundo do Enxoval (these brands have the highlight for the most affluent public in Brazil). In the magazine House Claudia, were Buddemeyer, Trousseau and MMartan. With the technological advance, it became more accessible the purchase of products of bed, table and bath industrialized and thus increased the Brazilian export. The evolutions of the machinery and the whole process involved, helped to obtain products with more accessible values, better quality and standardization of the finished products. It is observed that, the sector advances and develops playing an important role in the textile production. However, classic patterns predominate with white and cotton in bed, table and bath products, with embroidery being the most outstanding ornament of the style of these products. The maintenance of these standards by the Brazilian manufacturers is interesting to maintain sales in the domestic market, but a limitation for export products destined to audiences with different values and aesthetic tastes and with a greater supply of items with a variety of surface designs

Prisustvo, karakterizacija i kontrolne opcije za Salmonella enterica u lancu mesa divlje svinje / The presence, characterization and control options for Salmonella enterica in the wild boar meat chain

Mirčeta Jovan 29 September 2017 (has links)
Oni takođe predstavljaju i naučnu osnovu za dalji razvoj strategija za kontrolu S. enterica u populaciji divljih svinja u Srbiji i sveukupne mikrobiolo&scaron;ke kontaminacije mesa trupova.</p> / <p>The presence and distribution of Salmonella enterica infection in wild boar population in hunting estates in Serbia was studied, as well as the impact of hunting and carcass dressing procedures on their microbiological conditions.&nbsp; With respect to the main foodborne pathogen from wild boars, Salmonella enterica, the total number of 425 wild boars, originating from 12 hunting estates, was examined. The overall Salmonella prevalence was 4.2%. Isolates were recovered from faeces (13, representing 3.1%), while fewer from skin and carcass meat swabs, i.e. 3 (0.7%) and 4 (0.9%) respectively and only one isolate from mesenteric lymph node (0.2%). Serotyping of S. enterica isolates confirmed serotypes S. Enteritidis (71.4% of total numbers of isolates), S. Typhimurium (23.8%) and S. Infantis (only one isolate, 4.8%). Salmonella enterica was more often found in animals originating from open hunting estates, and from females older than 36 months weighing &gt;75 kg. Molecular characterisation of S. enterica isolates using Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed identical profile of S. Typhimurium from the faeces and carcass meat surface of the same animal, indicating transmission of this pathogen from the faeces to carcass meat during evisceration. Also, identical and/or highly related profiles of S. enterica were determined from wild boars from different hunting estates and between wild boars and domestic pigs and poultry from nearby farms in close proximity to hunting estates. This indicate the existence of genetic link, and possibility of epidemiological link as well between wild boars and domestic animals in respect to this microbial pathogen. High microbial contamination of wild boar skin and carcass meat with indicators of general and faecal contamination was found. Based on 210 sampled wild boars from eight hunting estates, the mean aerobic colony counts (ACC) on wild boar skin was 5,2 log10 cfu/cm2 and Enterobacteriaceae counts (EBC) 3,6 log10 cfu/cm2. The mean ACC on carcass meat was 5,4 log10 cfu/cm2, and EBC 3,8 log10 cfu/cm2. Higher levels of microbial contamination on wild boar carcass meat comparing to the skin indicate that sources other than skin (such as gut content spilage due to abdominal shot, as well as other unhygienic carcass dressing procedures) play important role in carcass meat contamination. Hunting and dressing procedures mostly influenced carcass meat microbial conditions, hence statistically significant difference was observed between properly shot animals and animals shot in abdominal region, as shown on the individual hunting estate level. Other procedures also had an influence on the higher carcass meat microbial contamination with ACC and EBC, such as evisceration in the field in lying position on the ground and without access to a clean water, as well as very unhygienic practice of washing skin and interior carcass surfaces after completed evisceration. The results from this study significantly contribute to the understanding of Salmonella enterica epidemiology in wild boars in Serbia and risk factors that contribute to its spread and transmission to humans, as well as to the impact of hunting and carcass dressing procedures on their microbial status. These results are also sound scientific basis for further development of control strategies for S. enterica in wild boar population in Serbia and control of overall microbial contamination on wild boar carcass meat.</p>

Утицај примене мешавине етарских уља у исхрани на производне карактеристике и квалитет меса бројлерских пилића / Uticaj primene mešavine etarskih ulja u ishrani na proizvodne karakteristike i kvalitet mesa brojlerskih pilića / The effect of dietary supplementation with essential oils mixture on production characteristics and broiler chicken meat quality

Popović Sanja 09 November 2019 (has links)
Kada se na sve to dodaju i pozitivni ekonomski parametri proizvodnje onda se sa sigurnošću može tvrditi da je upotreba mešavine etarskih ulja timijana, origana i ruzmarina u ishrani brojlerskih pilića potpuno opravdana.</p> / <p>The main objective of this research was to investigate the possibility and effects of dietary essential oils mixtures of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), oregano (Origanum vulgare) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), as a natural growth promoter, in broiler chicken nutrition on productive performances, blood biochemical parameters, morphological parameters of liver and villus, ileal nutrient digestibility, carcass characteristics and broiler meat quality, as well on the economic efficiency coasts of broiler chicken production. In order to realize the tasks set, biological trial was carried out on which Ross 308 strain broiler chickens. A totall of 840 one-day-old broiler chickens were equally distributed into three dietary treatments, two experimental and one control. As a natural growth promoter dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture in concentrations 0.05 i 0.10% was used.<br />During the experimental period, the production characteristics of broiler chickens were continuously monitored. Based on the analysis of the obtained results, it was concluded that the dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture can be used very successfully in the nutrition of broiler chickens as a natural growth promoter. The positive effect of this supplement was first expressed through the increase in broiler chickens body weight gain (4.29-4.61%), as well through the feed conversion ratio (7.69-8.28%). Observed by the nutrition periods, the most economical production of broiler chickens in the starter period was achieved using 0.05% of the dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture, while in a grover period a 0.10% dose proved to be more effective. The most economical production of broiler chickens during the entire fattening period was achieved using 0.05% of the dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture in nutrition, since in this treatment the lowest value of body weight gain price (71.41 din/kg) was achieved, as well as the highest value of the economic efficiency index, and the smallest value of the price index. Regarding the activity of pancreatic enzymes in blood serum and pancreas of broiler chickens, it was found that the added mixture of essential oils had positive influence on the enzymes activity in pancreas, with a significant positive correlation between the protease activity in the pancreas and the blood serum of broiler chickens (r=+0.858; p&lt;0.05). When it comes to the specific antibody titer in the blood serum of broiler chickens, it has been found that the use of a dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture in broiler chickens nutrition at a concentration of 0.10% contributed to a mild increase in the IgA antibody concentration in the blood, which potentially represents an indicator of the strengthening of the broiler chickens immune system, while statistically significant (p&lt;0.05) influence was observed on the IgG antibodies secretion in blood serum of broiler chickens in both experimental treatments. The added mixture of essential oils did not influence lipid profile status of broiler chickens blood, however, had positive effect on the digestibility of raw proteins, raw fats, raw ash, calcium and phosphorus in broiler chickens, which increased the utilization of basic nutrients, and therefore production characteristics of broiler chickens were improved. Improved carcass characteristics in experimental treatments indicate positive effects that phytobiotic exhibited in broiler chickens. Moreover, using the mixture of essential oils, nutritional, technological and sensory properties of chicken meat has been improved. Considering the importance of fatty acids in human nutrition, the positive effect of dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture on the fatty acid composition of broiler chicken meat has a great significance. The saturated fatty acids content was reduced, while the polyunsaturated fatty acids content was increased, thus achieving the recommended ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acids in chicken meat.<br />Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that with well-balanced feed, which contains optimal composition and content of natural growth promoters, can produce broiler chickens with improved production characteristics, which are characterized by an effective nutrients digestibility, and have good carcass yield and more meat. In addition, the obtained meat will have improved nutritive, technological and sensory quality, enriched with n-3 fatty acids and with optimal ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acids. When all of this is added to the positive economic parameters of production then it can be safely claimed that the use of a dietary thyme, oregano and rosemary essential oils mixture in broiler chickens nutirition is completely justified.</p>

Rehabilitation models for the treatment of historic motels and motor courts

Anderson, Jessica Lauren 07 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents owners, developers, and preservationists with models for the rehabilitation of motels and motor courts. The introductory section gives readers an overview of the evolution of the motor court and motel. It then focuses on the fates of motels and motor courts in the city of Austin, Texas, as an example of how owners and developers have dealt with the program type. The second section of this thesis discusses the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, a federal initiative to document and conserve the road itself as well as the “significant features associated with the highway” such as roadside stands, gas stations, and motels (“Route 66 Study Act,” 1990). This section also explores two examples of owner-led efforts to preserve motels along Route 66: Boots Court in Carthage, Missouri, and the Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, Missouri. The remaining sections of this thesis focus on four models for the rehabilitation of motels and motor courts. Case studies include Hotel San José, a motor court that was redeveloped into a boutique hotel in Austin, Texas; the Park Motel, a cottage court transformed into rentable business space in San Antonio, Texas; Arbor Terrace, an extended-stay hotel converted into supportive housing in Austin owned by Foundation Communities; and Costa Mesa Village, an SRO community in Costa Mesa, California, housed in a former Travelodge. For each case study, I discuss the site’s history, the original and current configurations and appearance, what makes the project successful, and whether aspects of the project are sympathetic with the goals of preservation. When considering rehabilitation of an historic motel or motor court, developers should consider the configuration of the building and what model would best serve the existing program. Motels in tourist districts with space to provide both private and public functions may be well served to consider the boutique hotel model exemplified by Hotel San José. A motel in a business district with flexible interior spaces able to cater to a variety of tenants might look to the Park Motel and create rentable spaces for small businesses. Those interested in pursuing a nonprofit model for rehabilitating their extant building stock could consider how they could benefit their communities by becoming SRO housing like Arbor Terrace or workforce housing complexes like Costa Mesa Village. Regardless of the project, it is clear that access to private donations, bank loans, or local and federal assistance is integral to the success of a rehabilitation project. Lambert required a sizeable loan before beginning work on Hotel San José that could only be secured when the lender was confident in the return on investment; Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds have allowed Foundation Communities to continue adding SROs in Austin. Though the Perezes didn’t divulge the amount of money spent on their adaptive reuse project, Allison Perez Johnson said that return on investment displayed by property owned by the Perez Family Trust along Broadway Street in San Antonio helped them get approved for loans for their rehabilitation project. As for properties like Harvey’s Boots Motel on Route 66, rehabilitation becomes an ongoing process that only occurs as money permits, and their ability to remain sustainable is supported by heritage tourists who patronize roadside businesses looking to find or recreate their own Route 66 adventures. / text
