Diffusion Brillouin dans des fibres optiques étirées et microstructurées / Brillouin scattering in optical microfibers and photonic crystal

Tchahame Nougnihi, Joel Cabrel 30 November 2016 (has links)
This PhD thesis focuses on the fundamental aspects of Brillouin scattering in chalcogenidemicrofibers and silica photonic crystal fibers with wavelength-scale solid core. Through experimentalinvestigations and numerical simulations, we have demonstrated that the Brillouin gain inchalcogenide microfiber can reach a value 150 to 250 times higher than in conventional opticalfibers. Moreover, we have reported the generation of multipeaked Brillouin spectra in a long taperedbirefringent photonic crystal fiber. A further investigation of these spectra shows that the multiresonantbehavior arises both from the excitation of hybrid acoustic waves and the fiber tapering.Another significant work of this thesis is the evidence of surface acoustic waves in small-core photoniccrystal fibers with large air filling fraction. Our results show specifically that this new type of scatteringis extremely sensitive to the air-hole microstructure geometry. Finally, these works contribute toa better understanding of Brillouin scattering in ultrathin optical fiber, paving the way towards therealization of new optoacoustic components for telecommunications and sensors.

Separation of microfibers from laundry waste water by hydrocyclone : In cooperation with Electrolux Professional

Lorentzon, Anna Cecilia Carolina January 2021 (has links)
Microfibers, textile fibres shorter than 5 mm, and are shed from fabrics during wear and released into the laundry effluent during washing. When passed through the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), they adsorb toxins, heavy metals and pathogens before being released into the environment. Synthetic microfibers persist for long periods of time in aquatic environments and very little is known about the degradation of processed natural fibres. Hydrocyclonic separation was studied as a way to separate the microfibers from the effluent before being they get additionally contaminated at the WWTP. A hydrocyclone has no moving parts and functions by utilizing centrifugal force and the difference in specific gravity between the fluid and the particles that are to be separated. The separation efficiency is dependent on its dimensional and operation parameters. No previous studies on hydrocyclonic separation of microfibres were found. Polyester fleece blankets were washed. The effluent was filtered, and the filters weighed to determine the mass of the separated fibres. Sampling of the inhomogeneous effluent presented a challenge and larger sample volumes would be needed to adequately represent the population. Using a Büchner funnel, filter fouling led to filtration times of up to 6 h for 1 l of effluent. Dividing the 1 l samples into two 0.5 l samples, filtering separately and adding the weight reduced filtration time to 2 h and the results were not significantly different from filtering the whole 1 l sample with one filter. The hydrocyclones tested separated around 11% of the total weight of microfibers in the effluent, too low to be deemed viable. As only a few dimensional variables were tested, it could possible that a higher fraction could be separated with this method. Given that the commercially available filtration systems separate 30-80%, refining existing methods may yield better results.

Processing And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube Based Conductive Polymer Composites

Yesil, Sertan 01 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study was to improve the mechanical and electrical properties of conductive polymer composites. For this purpose, different studies were performed in this dissertation. In order to investigate the effects of the carbon nanotube (CNT) surface treatment on the morphology, electrical and mechanical properties of the composites, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based conductive polymer composites were prepared by using as-received, purified and modified carbon nanotubes in a twin screw extruder. During the purification of carbon nanotubes, surface properties of carbon nanotubes were altered by purifying them with nitric acid (HNO3), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) mixtures. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) results indicated the removal of metallic catalyst residues from the structure of carbon nanotubes and increase in the oxygen content of carbon nanotube surface as a result of purification procedure. Surface structure of the purified carbon nanotubes was also modified by treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA). Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra of the carbon nanotube samples indicated the existence of functional groups on the surfaces of carbon nanotubes after modification. All composites prepared with purified and modified carbon nanotubes had higher electrical resistivities, tensile and impact strength values than those of the composite based on as-received carbon nanotubes, due to the functional groups formed on the surfaces of carbon nanotubes during surface treatment. In order to investigate the effects of alternative composite preparation methods on the electrical and mechanical properties of the composites, in-situ microfiber reinforced conductive polymer composites consisting of high density polyethylene (HDPE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) and carbon nanotubes were prepared in a twin screw extruder followed by hot stretching of PET/CNT phase in HDPE matrix. Composites were produced by using as-received, purified and PEG treated carbon nanotubes. SEM micrographs of the hot stretched composites pointed out the existence of in-situ PET/CNT microfibers dispersed in HDPE matrix up to 1 wt. % carbon nanotube loadings. Electrical conductivity values of the microfibrillar composites were higher than that of the composites prepared without microfiber reinforcement due to the presence of continuous PET/CNT microfibers with high electrical conductivity in the structure. To investigate the potential application of conductive polymer composites, the effects of surfactant usage and carbon nanotube surface modification / on the damage sensing capability of the epoxy/carbon nanotube/glass fiber composite panels during mechanical loadings were studied. Surface modification of the carbon nanotubes was performed by using hexamethylene diamine (HMDA). 4-octylphenol polyethoxylate (nonionic) (Triton X-100) and cetyl pyridinium chloride (cationic) (CPC) were used as surfactants during composite preparation. Electrical resistivity measurements which were performed during the impact, tensile and fatigue tests of the composite panels showed the changes in damage sensing capabilities of the composites. Surface treatment of carbon nanotubes and the use of surfactants decreased the carbon nanotube particle size and improved the dispersion in the composites which increased the damage sensitivity of the panels.

Fundamental investigations on the barrier effect of polyester micro fiber fabrics towards particle-loaded liquids induced by surface hydrophobization

Islam, Md. Nazirul 06 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
As the title implies, the chief goal of the present work is the improvement of the barrier effects of textile fabrics in the medical sector, in particular, in the operating room, which would be an effective safeguard against the causative pathogens allowing the health workers to work in and around hostile atmospheres and to accomplish useful tasks. To overcome the inherent drawbacks of surgical gown from classical fibers of both natural and synthetic origins, polyester micro filament fabric, down to 0.62 dtex per filament, was used to substitute them. Two major pathways have been chosen to render the surface hydrophobic: - Wet-chemical treatment - Plasma modification For the maximum efficiency of a specific wet-chemical, the following application formulations were found to be best effective: pH =4-5 Drying temperature and time=100°C / 90s Pick-up = 80% Curing temperature and time= 160°C / 120s A range of physical and chemical parameters have been found exerting significant influence on the extent of modification of the material: - Wetting agent - Amount of fluorine content in the chemical - Subsequent heat treatment of the finished material after washing - Ironing of the fabric For the plasma enhanced surface fluorination the following plasma gases were used: - Saturated fluorine compounds: CF4 and C2F6 - Reducing agent: H2 and C2H4 The exposure of the substrate to a pure C2F6 discharge resulted in higher hydrophobicity than the substrates exposed to CF4 plasma. Stepwise increased mixture of H2 or C2H4 to a proportionally decreased amount of C2F6 plasma showed a gradual decrease in contact angle and a substantial increase in sliding angle values. In addition to the treatments with gas mixtures a two-step technique, i.e., treatment with C2H4 prior to C2F6 plasma, was applied that appeared to be very promising in modifying the surface characteristics. Both, the contact angles and the sliding angles remaining almost constant on a very high level with increasing amount of C2H4 in the feed composition. An essentially vital concern of the work was the characterization of the treatment effect comprising both physical and chemical aspects. By washing the materials for 20 times no significant impairment of hydrophobic character has been noticed in case of fluorocarbon finishing agents as well as by the surface treated with C2H4 followed by C2F6 plasma (i.e., a two-step technique), wherein a complete loss of hydrophobic effect washing the silicone-treated materials for 10 times was observed. In breathability aspect, the plasma modification was found to be the best-suited technique with zero reduction of air permeability in comparison to wet-chemical finishing. The barrier test as a measure of dye absorption was conducted using protein solution, synthetic and human blood and the efficiency were verified by colorimetric technique. In contrast to pure plasma treatments, modification of the fabric with plasma in two-step treatment as well as with wet-finishing method using fluorocarbon compounds were completely impervious to artificial and real blood. The most striking feature was the zero uptake of the protein solution by all treated surfaces.

These microstrip antennas allow the miniaturization of their structures, which is important to devices that use this antenna, considering their features such: low cost, accommodation facility and structure lightness. In addition to the metamaterials, which are made by geometrical, structures from common materials, such conductors, dielectrics, magnetics or even their combination. The main characteristic of the metamaterials is based on presenting special features of permissiveness and permeability, which are not found in natural materials, whose main effect is the negative refraction rate. By having those features, it is possible to use them in many optical and electromagnetism ways. The metamaterial theory is described and applied on this work as a way of microstrip antenna substrate in order to work the permissiveness and permeability related to the scope of propagation of electromagnetic waves.

In this dissertation, the development of fiber optic-based sensing platforms which can be projected to act as biological sensors is presented. Firstly, a setup which employs birefringent microfibers obtained from tapering down side-polished standard telecom optical fibers is exposed. This configuration provides a highly sensitive refractive index sensor ¿ (3.0 ± 0.2) x 104 nanometers per refractive index unit ¿ but with poor robustness. In order to obtain a more robust setup, a configuration which employs two in-series mechanically induced long-period gratings was studied. Although this setup presented lower sensitivity than the sensor obtained from birefringent microfibers ¿ (700 ± 30) nanometers per refractive index unit ¿, it allowed the performance of measurements for monitoring small refractive index variations. As temperature fluctuations can influence refractive index measurements, a setup in which two birefringent optical fibers are spliced in an in-series configuration for temperature sensing is also presented. By using this setup, it is also possible to independently sense two different physical parameters (which are defined according to the choice of the birefringent fibers to be used). Finally, it is presented the development of optical configurations by employing a biocompatible material: silk. The use of silk-based configurations is very promising since it broadens the optical biosensors applications possibilities / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física

Ottosson Geete, Filippa, Larsson, Tilda, Jansson, Kajsa January 2022 (has links)
Microfiber-pollution from washing is a recurring topic and problem because of the small fragments coming out into the water. The amount of microplastics is hard to see and measure with visual analysis, but by using the new standard method to determine the microfibres when collecting the loss of material it opens facilities to see what and how the quantity is affected. To make a more sustainable business in the textile industry, more studies about how the differences in the manufacturing processes affect the textiles have to be done. By using different test methods for a simulation of aging textiles with two different methods of coloring, the phase of use can be studied and in best case support sustainable choices in the textile value chain. The simulated aging is customized for the phase of use for the material used in this study. The results that will be analyzed are for the water repellency, color fastness and the loss of material, before and after the simulated aging. The study concluded that the more sustainable method for coloring the material is a better choice both theoretical and practical. This was found out from all the tests performed on the materials. Except for the results in the microfibre test that after being performed could not be compared according to the standard when the method could not be accomplished completely correct after problems with the filtration. Otherwise, the problem turned out to be useful for the study after being analyzed because it was not only fibers detached from the specimens but also the water repellency coating. The method for the study has been successfully useful to be able draw the conclusion that the solution dyed material is a better choice than the one being piece dyed. It was found out after the statistical analysis of the results from the performed test methods, but also through a visual indication.

Desenvolvimento de um biomaterial composto de poliuretano e microfibra de biovidro 45S5 em gradiente funcional para reparo de cartilagem articular: estudos in vitro e in vivo / Development of a biomaterial composed of polyurethane and bioglass microfiber in gradient functional to repair articular cartilage: in vitro and in vivo studies

Laurenti, Karen Cristina 06 September 2011 (has links)
Articular cartilage has been widely discussed in the literature by means of several studies and researches. The present thesis reports on an innovative and original proposal to use a biomaterial compound and the development of an artificial cartilage that acts as a cushion rubber with characteristics of fiber-reinforced gel with biomimetic mechanical purpose mimicking the behavior of articular cartilage. An implant with a tribological surface for contact with the cartilage of the tibial plateau was designed. It should gradually turn into an osteo-integrable region for mechanical fixation in the subchondral bone. A biomaterial composed of polyurethane and bioglass microfiber in functional gradient was then developed and validated by scanning electron microscopy and histological analysis through in vitro tests. Under either direct or indirect cytotoxicity conditions, the tests showed that the amount of cells is statistically similar to negative control and statistically different from the positive control, indicating that the biomaterial composed of polyurethane and bioglass microfiber showed no direct or indirect toxicity and promoted cell growth and spreading. Such results allowed continuing the studies with in vivo experiments with rabbits. The material was manufactured for use in 3mm diameter and 4mm depth osteochondral defects in the central region of the femoral trochlea of rabbits. After experimental periods of 15, 30 and 90 days, the scanning electron microscopy analysis showed a neo-formation of a structure similar to trabecular bones on the tribological surface in the distal region. This neo-formation was considered biomimetic, confirmed by both histological analysis and the presence of richly vascularized fibrocartilaginous tissues with chondrocytes in the region proximal to the tribological surface.

This, in turn, can often be increased by inserting fibers, which act on the deflection of microcracks. This study aimed to use a microfiber glass wool (silica-based) as an additive reinforcing the cement matrix, improving the rupture tenacity, in order to prevent the propagation of microcracks in the cement sheath commonly found in oil wells submitted to high temperatures. The fibers were added at different concentrations, 2 to 5% (BWOC) and varied average sizes, grinding for 90 s, 180 s, 300 s, 600 s. The cement slurries were made with a density of 1,90 g/ cm3 (15,6 lb/gal), using Portland cement CPP- Special Class as the hydraulic binder and 40% silica flour. The characterization of the fiber was made by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size by sieving, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry (TG / DTG). Were performed technological tests set by the API (American Petroleum Institute) by rheology, stability, free water, compressive strength, as well as testing rupture energy, elastic modulus and permeability. The characterization results showed good thermal stability of the microfiber glass wool for application in oil wells submitted to steam injection and, also, that from the particle size data, it was possible to suggest that microfibers milled up to 300 s, are ideal to act as reinforcement to the cement slurries. The rheological parameters, there was committal of plastic viscosity when larger lengths were inserted of microfiber (F90). The values obtained by free water and stability were presented according to API. The mechanical properties, the incorporation of microfiber to the cement slurries gave better rupture tenacity, as compared to reference cement slurries. The values of compressive strength, elastic modulus and permeability have been maintained with respect to the reference cement slurries. Thus, cement slurries reinforced with microfiber glass wool can ensure good application for cementing oil wells submitted to steam injection, which requires control of microcracks, due to the thermal gradients / Embora exista uma grande variedade de aditivos que atuam no estado fresco, para ajuste das propriedades do cimento, existe tamb?m uma busca por adi??es que melhorem a tenacidade do cimento no estado endurecido.
