Heat Affected Zone Cracking of Allvac 718Plus Superalloy during High Power Beam Welding and Post-weld Heat Treatment

Idowu, Oluwaseun Ayodeji 08 April 2010 (has links)
The present dissertation reports the findings of a study of cracking behavior of a newly developed superalloy, Allvac 718Plus during high power beam welding and post-weld heat treatment. Microstructures of the base alloy, heat affected zone (HAZ) and fusion zone (FZ) of welded and post-weld heat treated (PWHT) coupons were examined by the use of standard metallographic techniques involving optical microscopy, analytical scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, grain boundary segregation behavior of boron atoms during pre-weld heat treatments was evaluated using secondary ion mass spectroscopic system. In the first phase of the research, 718Plus was welded using a low and high heat input CO2 laser to assess its weld cracking response. Detailed examination of the welds by analytical electron microscopic technique revealed the occurrence of cracking in the HAZ of low heat input welds, while their FZ was crack free. However, both the FZ and HAZ of high heat input welds were crack-free. Resolidified constituents were observed along the cracked grain boundaries of the lower heat input welds, which indicated that HAZ cracking in this newly developed superalloy was associated with grain boundary liquation. However, despite a more extensive liquation of grain boundaries and grain interior in the HAZ of high heat input welds, no cracking occurred. This was attributed to the combination of lower welding stresses generated during cooling, and relaxation of these stresses by thick intergranular liquid. Although HAZ cracking was prevented by welding with a high heat input laser, it resulted in a significant damage to the parent microstructure through its extensive liquation. Thus, the use of low heat input welding is desirable. However, this resulted in HAZ cracking which needs to be minimized or eliminated. Therefore, during the second phase of this research, the effects of pre-weld thermal processing on the cracking response of 718Plus were investigated. Results from the quantification of the cracking of the alloy showed that HAZ cracking may be significantly reduced or eliminated through an adequate selection of pre-weld thermal cycle. In the third stage of this research, crack-free welds of 718Plus were post-weld heat treated using standard thermal schedules. A significant solid state cracking of the alloy occurred during the PWHT. The cracking was attributed to the presence of embrittling phases on HAZ grain boundaries, coupled with aging contraction stresses that are generated by a considerable precipitation of gamma prime phase during aging.

Caractérisation microstructurale et modélisation micromécanique de roches poreuses oolithiques / Microstructural Characterization and Micromechanical Modeling of Oolitic Porous Rocks

Kalo, Kassem 16 October 2017 (has links)
The aim of this work is to study the influence of the microstructure of heterogeneous porous rocks on the behavior at the macroscopic scale. Thus, we characterized the microstructure and micromechanical properties (thanks to nano-indentation tests) of two porous oolitic rocks (Lavoux limestone and iron ore) to calculate their effective mechanical and thermal properties. Oolitic rocks are constituted by an assemblage of porous grains (oolites), pores and inter-granular crystals. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray 3D Computed Tomography were used to identify the different components of these rocks. Particular attention was given to X-Ray computed tomography since this analytical method allows the characterization of the porous network (size, spatial distribution, and volume fraction), and the shapes of oolites and inter-oolitic crystals. The novelty of this work lies in taking into account the 3D real shape of pores. Hence, we approximated porous oolites by spheres and irregularly shaped pores by ellipsoids. This approximation was performed thanks to the principal component analysis (PCA), which provides the geometrical properties such as length of semi-axes and orientation of resulting ellipsoids. The sphericity of the approximated oolites was calculated and the values close to 1 allowed us to consider oolites as spheres. To verify the approximation in the case of pores, we evaluated the contribution of these irregularly shaped three-dimensional pores to the overall elastic properties. Thus, compliance contribution tensors for 3D irregular pores and their ellipsoidal approximations were calculated using the finite element method (FEM). These tensors were compared and a relative error was estimated to evaluate the accuracy of the approximation. This error produces a maximum discrepancy of 4.5% between the two solutions for pores and ellipsoids which verifies the proposed approximation procedure based on PCA. The FEM numerical method was verified by comparing the numerical solution for compliance contribution tensors of ellipsoids to the analytical solution based on Eshelby’s theory. The difference between these two solutions does not exceed 3%. The same numerical method was used to calculate thermal resistivity contribution tensors. Calculated compliance and resistivity contribution tensors were used to evaluate effective elastic properties (bulk modulus and shear coefficient) and effective thermal conductivity by considering the two-step Maxwell homogenization scheme. The results showed an important influence of the porosity on effective properties. Finally, the results obtained for irregular pores were compared to those for ellipsoidal ones and they showed a good agreement with a maximum deviation of 4% which verifies once again the approximation of irregularly shaped pores by tri-axial ellipsoids

Amaral, Thiago de Souza 08 January 2016 (has links)
More complex and bigger structures have increased the applicability of low alloy high strength steels due to weight and cost reductions in these projects. One of the requirements for the use of these materials is the preservation of performance after welding. Meanwhile, the norms on which the Welding Procedures Specifications (WPS) are based have not yet considered the development of modern steel and its new production process, resulting in unnecessary welding costs that diminish the profits of the application of this type of steel. This thesis aimed to develop and evaluate an experimental methodology to guide the creation and control of welding procedures for structural steel through a microstructural atlas of the heat affected zone (HAZ) in a thermomechanical control process (TMCP), 65 ksi steel (ASTM A572 Grade 65). This steel was used in the project of an industrial building for CBMM in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is proposed that through a microstructural atlas of a given steel, it is possible to determine the range of cooling rates that the steel may suffer during welding without affecting mechanical properties and without risking cold cracks. When comparing the microstructure of steel welds performed in field conditions, it is possible to determine the heat input range for a given process in the preparation of a WPS. The selected case study is from a high strength low alloy class 65 ksi steel (ASTM A572 Grade 65) that was used in the structure of an industrial building. The steel was produced using TMCP. The atlas was created via the construction of a continuous cooling transformation diagram using physical simulation (dilatometer and Gleeble) of the coarse grain HAZ (GCHAZ). The characterization of the simulated region was performed by metallography and mechanical tests. The microstructure of real welds made by a qualified WPS were compared to the atlas in order to certify the correct use of parameters and to validate the method. The methodology was also qualified and the potential economic benefits were quantified (based only on the reduction of consumables used and the increased availability of the welding process machine) for the selected industrial project. The mapped microstructures varied from martensite (at high cooling rates) to pearlite/ferrite with large grain size (at low cooling rates). There was remarkable prevalence of bainitic microstructure in a wide range of cooling rates, consistent with the chemical composition of the steel studied. Comparisons with real weld microstructures showed the atlas is compatible with them, and that it can more accurately describe the effective thermal cycle xi that occurs in the coarse grain region of the HAZ (other regions were not included). The application of this methodology in the development of new WPS would allow greater flexibility in the welding procedures, including welding without preheating. In this respect alone, it was possible to forecast savings of approximately R$200,000.00, 1,000 hours of processing and 172 tonnes of carbon equivalent emissions.

Mondelin, Alexandre 05 December 2012 (has links)
During machining, extreme conditions of pressure, temperature and strain appear in the cutting zone. In this thermo-mechanical context, the link between the cutting conditions (cutting speed, lubrication, feed rate, wear, tool coating…) and the machining surface integrity represents a major scientific target. This PhD study is a part of a global project called MIFSU (Modeling of the Integrity and Fatigue resistance of Machining Surfaces) and it focuses on the finish turning of the 15-5PH (a martensitic stainless steel used for parts of helicopter rotor). Firstly, material behavior has been studied in order to provide data for machining simulations. Stress-free dilatometry tests were conducted to obtain the austenitization kinetics of 15-5PH steel for high heating rates (up to 11,000 ° C/s). Then, parameters of Leblond metallurgical model have been calibrated. In addition, dynamic compression tests (dε/dt ranging from 0.01 to 80/s and ε > 1) have been performed to calibrate a strain-rate dependent elastoplasticity model (for high strains). These tests also helped to highlight the dynamic recrystallization phenomena and their influence on the flow stress of the material. Thus, recrystallization model has also been implemented. In parallel, a numerical model for the prediction of machined surface integrity has been constructed. This model is based on a methodology called "hybrid" (developed during the PhD thesis of Frédéric Valiorgue for the AISI 304L steel). The method consists in replacing tool and chip modeling by equivalent loadings (obtained experimentally). A calibration step of these loadings has been carried out using orthogonal cutting and friction tests (with sensitivity studies of machining forces, friction and heat partition coefficients to cutting parameters variations). Finally, numerical simulations predictions of microstructural changes (austenitization and dynamic recrystallization) and residual stresses have been successfully compared with the results of an experimental campaign of turning.

Generalized continua and applications to finite deformations of quasi-inextensible fiber reinforcements / Milieux continus généralisés : Application aux grandes transformations des renforts de composites quasi-inextensibles

D'Agostino, Marco Valerio 07 September 2015 (has links)
Dered materials in the simplest and more effective way. However, there are some cases in which the considered materials are heterogeneous even at relatively large scales and, as a consequence, the effect of microstructure on the overall mechanical behavior of the medium cannot be neglected. In such situations, Cauchy continuum theory may not be useful to fully describe the mechanical behavior of considered materials. It is in fact well known that such continuum theory is not able to catch significant phenomena related to concentrations of stress and strain and to specific deformation patterns in which high gradients of deformation occur and which are, in turn, connected to particular phenomena which take place at lower scales. Generalized continuum theories may be good candidates to model such micro-structured materials in a more appropriate way since they are able to account for the description of the macroscopic manifestation of the presence of microstructure in a rather simplified way.
The present manuscript is organized as follows: In ch.1 a general description of fibrous composite reinforcements is given. In ch.2 some fundamental issues concerning classical continuum mechanical models are recalled. In ch.3 we start analyzing some discrete and continuum models for the description of the mechanical behavior of 2D woven composites. At this stage of the manuscript, we want to show how some discrete numerical simulations allowed us to unveil some very special deformation modes related to the effect of the local bending of fibers on the overall macroscopic deformation of fibrous composite reinforcements. Such discrete simulations showed rather clearly that microscopic bending of the fibers cannot be neglected when considering the deformation of fibrous composite reinforcements. For this reason, we subsequently introduced a continuum model which is able to account for such microstructure-related effects by means of second gradient terms appearing in the strain energy density. In ch.4 we reduce the general continuum mechanical framework introduced in ch.2 to the particular case of 2D continua. In ch.5 we introduce a strong kinematical hypothesis on the admissible deformations, assuming that the yarns composing the woven reinforcements are inextensible.

Gonflement sous irradiation d'un acier de structure pour un réacteur de quatrième génération / Irradiation Swelling of a Structural Steel for the Fourth-Generation Nuclear Reactors

Kountchou Tawokam, Mikael 12 February 2018 (has links)
Le modèle prenant en compte la présence de l'hélium reproduit l'augmentation de la densité de cavités observée en double faisceaux Fe-He / A cold-worked titanium stabilized austenitic steel, named 15-15Ti AIM1, is the reference material for fuel cladding to be used in the _rst core of ASTRID (prototype of Sodium cooled Fast neutron Reactor -SFR). This study contributes to the understanding of the microstructural evolution under high dose irradiation of AIM1 (> 100 dpa) and especially swelling mechanisms. Several ion irradiations of AIM1 and its precursor 15-15Ti D4 (AIM1 without phosphorus), were done at Jannus-Saclay facility. These irradiations were performed up to 150 dpa in single beam (Fe 2+) and up to 120 dpa in dual beams (Fe 2+ and He +) at a temperature set between 550 and 630 ° C in order to study the helium e_ects. Besides, thermal annealing at 650 ° Cequivalent to irradiation time (<100h) was carried out to separate the effects of temperature and irradiation. The microstructures and the irradiation-induced defects were characterized mainly by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and tomographic atom probe (SAT). During thermal annealing at 650 ° C, rapid precipitation of nanometric titanium carbides over dislocations was observed. A low density of phosphorus-enriched clusters (phosphide nucleation) was also detected. After irradiation with ions, the microstructure of AIM1 and 15-15Ti revealed high density of Frank faulted-loops distributed homogeneously and which didn'tevolve with the irradiation dose (between 45 and 150 dpa). The precipitation of nanometric titanium carbides, phosphides (in AIM1) and chromium carbides was observed. Precipitation of phosphides in AIM1 is accelerated by irradiation. Irradiation_induced segregation of Ni and Si on dislocations has also been highlighted. Single-beam irradiations even at 150 dpa show very low cavities density distributed heterogeneously in the grains. It is shown that the simultaneous injection of 1 appm / dpa helium leads to much higher cavity density. In this case, cavities are attached to nanoprecipitates (TiC and phosphides). Finally, a comparison between ion and neutron irradiation on 15-15Ti D4 highlighted significant differences in the evolution of precipitation and cavity formation mechanisms. A cluster dynamics model with the Crescendo code was used to simulate the formation of Frank loops, cavities and the evolution of the dislocation network, taking into account the helium production. The model parameters were adjusted to reproduce the experimental single beam irradiation data at 630°C. The extrapolation of the model shows the displacement of the swelling peak at low temperatures as the rate of damage decreases. Taking into account the presence of Helium, the model reproduces the increase of cavity density observed in double Fe-He beams.

[en] This thesis studies the microstructural stability of Ni-base Super alloy 625 for its mechanical properties and its varieties of applications in the industry, in three different conditions: bulk (industrially forged plate), precursor powder particles for 3D printing process and a sample produced by laser Direct Metal Deposition (DMD). Aiming at promoting precipitation processes and, therefore, correlate with the mechanical properties of the material, samples of these conditions were submitted to solution annealing and isothermal aging treatments at 650 Celsius degrees and 750 Celsius degrees for 10 hours and 100 hours. Characterization of the microstructure was performed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in the conventional diffraction contrast mode, scanning/transmission (STEM) analytical mode, and high resolution microscopy (HRTEM). Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDXS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) were used to analyze the local composition of the matrix and precipitated phases. Micro hardness measurements were performed to evaluate the effect of thermal treatments. The microstructural analysis of the bulk sample in the as-received condition showed an equiaxial grain structure with NbTiC and M6C precipitated phases. Solid solution treatment at 1100 Celsius degrees for 40 minutes allowed partial dissolution of the carbides. Aging at 650 Celsius degrees for 10 hours showed NbTiC carbides and a hardness increase of 5 percent compared to the as-solubilized sample. However, aging at this temperature for 100 hours promoted the homogeneous precipitation of the gama phase, thus increasing the material s hardness by 45 percent, when compared to it as solubilized. The bulk sample aged at 750 Celsius degrees for 10 hours showed grain boundary and homogeneous precipitation of NbTiC and M23C6 carbides. This sample condition upon aging at this temperature for 100 hours shows δ phase homogeneously precipitated in the matrix. The microstructural analysis of the precursor powder showed micrometer size individual particles as polycrystalline, consisting predominantly of columnar grains of the austenitic matrix. Analysis of samples produced by DMD in the as-received condition revealed dendritic microstructure with carbides of Nb and Laves phase in the interdendritic regions. The solution treatment of the DMD samples for 40 minutes at 1100 Celsius degrees and 1200 Celsius degrees proved to be insufficient for the dissolution of the precipitate. In order to enhance diffusion of Nb and so carbide and Laves phase dissolution, a solution anneal was carried out at 1200 Celsius degrees for 100 hours. This sample treated at 650 Celsius degrees for 100 hours showed M23C6 carbides precipitated at grain boundaries and also at the Laves phase/matrix interfaces. However, upon aging at 750 Celsius degrees for 100 hours the precipitation of M23C6 and M6C takes place at the grain boundary and in the austenitic matrix, thus increasing the material s hardness by 18 percent, when compared to it as solubilized. The increase of the hardness by 12 percent after the heat treatment is related to the precipitation of the carbides in the grain boundaries and dispersed in the matrix resulting from the aging thermal treatments.

Additive manufacturing technologies, particularly electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB/M), are becoming increasingly important for the processing of intermetallic titanium aluminides. This study presents the effects of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and subsequent two-step heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the TNM-B1 alloy (Ti–43.5Al–4Nb–1Mo–0.1B) fabricated via PBF-EB/M. Adequate solution heat treatment temperatures allow the adjustment of fully lamellar (FL) and nearly lamellar (NL-β) microstructures. The specimens are characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography (CT), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties at ambient temperatures are evaluated via tensile testing and subsequent fractography. While lack-of-fusion defects are the main causes of failure in the as-built condition, the mechanical properties in the heat-treated conditions are predominantly controlled by the microstructure. The highest ultimate tensile strength is achieved after HIP due to the elimination of lack-of-fusion defects. The results reveal challenges originating from the PBF-EB/M process, for example, local variations in chemical composition due to aluminum evaporation, which in turn affect the microstructures after heat treatment. For designing suitable heat treatment strategies, particular attention should therefore be paid to the microstructural characteristics associated with additive manufacturing.

Niñerola González, Rubén 04 July 2022 (has links)
[EN] Conventional material transformation processes require facing new challenges that arise in today's industrial society, such as environmental sustainability. Similarly, products manufactured in the future must meet certain environmental requirements, such as the recyclability of the raw material used. Within this context, the manufacture of products using 3D technology such as additive manufacturing, allows using only the necessary material that is required for a complete product. These manufacturing techniques are requested by the aeronautical sector, which requires very demanding quality values. Within these tests, the study of the behavior of the material through crack growth is of great importance. By means of this manufacturing technology, a product is obtained in an almost final state through the addition of layers of about 100 microns, which results in a preferential metallurgical grain orientation and different from the same alloy manufactured by conventional methods. The phenomena occurring during manufacturing can lead to defects such as cracks or porosities that can reduce the strength capabilities, so a study to predict the life of the component is important. Within the additive manufacturing processes we find the electron beam manufacturing which achieves material qualities with almost zero porosity. As a consequence, companies in the aeronautical or medical sector have concluded this technique as very reliable. The work developed in this thesis is based on the study of titanium alloys manufactured by electron beam additive manufacturing. More precisely, the work is focused on the fracture toughness behavior in order to relate it to the most relevant microstructural characteristics. The analyses carried out consider different orientations and positions that take place in the fabrication tray, performing both static and dynamic mechanical tests. A second part of the thesis is based on the application of the extended finite element method, XFEM, which is developed as an alternative to conventional finite element method. In XFEM a finite element approximation is constructed in such a way that it is able to represent functions within the elements. A critical point in the calculation process in the finite element method is the meshing process. The accuracy obtained in the approximation depends on the size of the elements of the mesh. Therefore, accurate computation at important points such as the near-crack zone requires the use of a mesh with a very small element size. With the XFEM technique, we achieve this accuracy by means of an enrichment process. The results provided by the XFEM tool are compared with those obtained experimentally with respect to components manufactured by 3D printing. This comparison is carried out on different geometries with the presence of holes, in such a way that it has been possible to predict the crack growth that takes place in 3D printed materials. In the same way, comparisons of parts with complex geometry are carried out to validate the developed model. / Niñerola González, R. (2022).
