The author has designed a guidebook to accompany the State of California Department of Education's Coordinated Compliance Review Manual. The purpose of the guidebook is to provide English language learners' (ELL) coordinators the information needed to facilitate and achieve compliance with the State of California's rules, regulations and policies that will insure that ELL students' needs are being addressed and met. The design and method of the project are discussed.

The influx of Black pupils seeking admission to Indian schools
began in 1990 after the Democratic Movement's "all schools for
all people" campaign was announced. The medium of instruction
in Indian schools is English which is also the mother tongue.
Therefore Black pupils who come on transfer from schools in the
KwaZulu township are immediately faced with a language problem
as they are taught in the mother tongue untii standard three,
when they switch to English. This research project arose as a
result of the researcher's experience with Black pupils, whom he

felt were severely linguistically underprepared for academic
study in the senior primary phase. Furthermore, most present day
teachers were trained for monocultural schools and have little
or no experience of multicultural education. The main problem
that this research focuses on includes the learning problems
encountered by Black pupils in Indian primary schools and the

A thesis submitted to the Wits School of Education, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy / The perturbing phenomenon of wastage (revealed through incidences of unsatisfactory levels of student retention, poor pass and completion rates and an increase in repetition rates) is a course of concern for universities as it has a bearing on financial expenditure as well as institutional reputation. For the purpose of this study being at-risk is synonymous with being vulnerable.Student vulnerability is not a homogeneous phenomenon and therefore different student support structures, strategies and policies need to be devised for different issues and problems experienced by vulnerable students. This study argues that as long as effective and adequate institutional support is lacking, student vulnerability will continue to be a 'wastage' catalyst. [Abbreviated Abstract. An Exploration of Effective Community College Instructors' Use of Culturally Competent PedagogiesBunk, Aylin 15 March 2017 (has links)
Increasing diversity among community college students and the rising demand for a culturally competent workforce necessitate community college faculty across all disciplines to adjust their pedagogical choices to effectively serve diverse students while preparing all students for the new global era. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore what culturally competent pedagogies effective community college instructors use and reasons behind their choices. The study was conducted at a large community college in the Pacific Northwest. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with ten instructors teaching in different disciplines. In addition, the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) was used to measure participants' intercultural competency. The findings revealed that the participants were cognizant of the growing diversity in their classes and made a number of pedagogical choices to accommodate their students' needs. The findings also revealed that the participants' teaching in the Humanities and the Adult Basic Skills departments had more latitude in engaging diversity and choosing materials to fit the needs of their students compared to science and vocational field instructors.

The purpose of this study was to connect English language learning (ELL) student's school life with their home life. Proposition 227, which prohibited the use of Spanish in the classrooms, has made it difficult to make the home-school connection. Research shows that parents play a vital role in the education of their children but Proosition 227 severely restricted Spanish speaking parents' participation in their child's education. This study demonstrates how the use of home response learning journals empowered parents to participate in their children's literacy and biliteracy development.
