This dissertation explores the need to involve churches in mission according to the Lord Jesus Christ, whose mission was indeed holistic and comprehensive. To achieve this goal, the study calls upon churches to move from a “maintenance Christianity” status, which has been almost a way of life for churches, to a holistic and comprehensive approach to mission. Practically speaking, this is to be illustrated through a case study of churches in the North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The churches in this part of the world present many challenges that sustain such an exploration, namely, misunderstanding regarding mission, lack of well-skilled and visionary church leaders, maintenance Christianity mentality, spirit of tribalism among Christians, and poverty. The study concludes with practical recommendations on how the issues raised through the dissertation can be applied to a broader field than the churches in the North Kivu Province. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology) / M. Summary in German and English / Zusammenfassung Im schleichenden Rückgang gemeindlichen Lebens wird eine anhaltende Inkulturationskrise sichtbar. Der gegenwärtigen Kirche in ihrer milieuverengenden Präsenz gelingt es nicht, in die vielfältigen sozialen Räume der Bundesrepublik vorzudringen. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist ein Diskussionsbeitrag zur gemeinsamen Suche nach einer zukünftigen Sozialgestalt der Kirche in unserer postmodernen Umgebung. Ausgehend von der zentralen Bedeutung des Gottesdienstes als Mitte der Gemeinde, wird zunächst dargelegt, dass eine zukünftige Kirchenentwicklung nur vom Gottesdienst her geschehen kann. Dies gilt vornehmlich dann, wenn er als Aufbau von Gemeinde der Brüder und Schwestern positioniert wird und nicht als Programmm oder Veranstaltung. Der seit Anfang der 1990iger Jahre wahrnehmbare Zweitgottesdienstboom könnte ein missionarisch- strategischer Ansatzpunkt sein, um die soziologisch ausdifferenzierte Bevölkerung zu erreichen. Plurale Gottesdienstkonzepte als Gemeindepflanzungsansätze werden zu Drehund Angelpunkten einer zukünftigen, notwendigerweise multioptionalen, kulturrelevanten Sozialgestalt von Kirche. In einer Kirche mit vielfältigen Gottesdienstkonzepten wird auch die Frage nach der christlichen Einheit neu gestellt und als plurale Ausdrucksform diskutiert. Summary English The gradual deterioration of congregational life is unveiling an ongoing inculturation crisis. With its milieu constricting presence, the church is currently not able to enter into the multifaceted social environments in Germany. This paper represents a contribution to the discussion concerning our joint search of the church's future social form in our post-modern society. Departing from the major significance of the church service as the centre of the congregation, it is argued that future development of the church can only take place from within the church service. This is especially true if it is intended as congregational development by the brothers and sisters, and not as programme or event. The boom of second church services we have been observing since the beginning of the 1990s could become a missionary-strategic starting point in order to reach a sociologically diversified population. Plural church service concepts as a basic approach to church planting become the linchpin of a future, necessarily multioptional and culturally relevant social form of church. In a church with manifold church service concepts, the question of Christian unity is being asked anew and discussed as a plural form of expression. / Christian Spirituality Church History and Missiology / M. German text / Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Bedeutung des Allgemeinen Priestertums im missionarischen Gemeindeaufbau. Leitend ist dabei die Frage, inwieweit die Verwirklichung des Allgemeinen Priestertums ein Wachstumsfaktor für Gemeinden darstellt. Die Untersuchung beginnt mit einer biblisch fundierten Definition des Gemeindewachstums. Darauf aufbauend folgt eine Erläuterung der Typologie des Gemeindewachstums sowie eine Darstellung der primären Wachstumsfaktoren und ihrer Zusammenhänge. Im Anschluss wird auf der Grundlage der biblischen Begründung sowie des Forschungsstandes ein ekklesiologisches Konzept des Allgemeinen Priestertums entworfen. Ausgewählte Schwerpunkte der kirchengeschichtlichen Entwicklung vertiefen die dogmatischen und praktischen Erkenntnisse zur Verwirklichung des Allgemeinen Priestertums. Die biblische Begründung des Allgemeinen Priestertums bildet im weiteren Forschungsverlauf die Grundlage zur Entwicklung einer quantitativen Umfrage. Unter Verwendung des eigens erstellten Fragebogens wird die Verwirklichung des Allgemeinen Priestertums in der Ev. Gemeinde Schönblick sowie in der Ev. Kirchengemeinde Bernhausen vergleichend und hypothesenprüfend untersucht. Auf der Basis der quantitativen Ergebnisse folgt mit Hilfe von unterschiedlichen Leitfadeninterviews eine qualitative Umfrage in der Ev. Gemeinde Schönblick. Die Analyse der qualitativen Studie erfolgt durch die Anwendung der Grounded Theory hypothesengenerierend. Schließlich wird das empirische Gesamtergebnis dem ekklesiologischen Konzept des Allgemeinen Priestertums gegenübergestellt, um individuelle Handlungsanweisungen für den Glaubenden sowie Strukturprinzipien für den Gemeindeaufbau zu begründen. Die Doktorarbeit (Thesis) leistet damit einen empirischen Beitrag zum Verständnis des Allgemeinen Priestertums als Grundfrage eines missionarischen Gemeindeaufbaus. Die Ev. Gemeinde Schönblick dient dabei als Modell einer wachstumsorientierten Gemeindearbeit. / The present work deals with the meaning of the priesthood of all believers in missionary church development. The leading question is: To what extent is the development of the priesthood of all believers a factor of growth in the work of a given congregation? The study begins with a biblical definition of church growth. From this starting point, the types of church growth are discussed and key growth factors and their context are elucidated. On the basis of this biblical foundation and drawing on current research, an ecclesiological concept for the priesthood of all believers will then be formulated. Selected key factors in the historic development of the church will serve to underpin the dogmatic and empirical findings pertaining to the realisation of the priesthood of all believers. The biblical foundation of the priesthood of all believers forms the basis of the development of a quantitative survey which will be done during the course of the study. Using a specially designed questionnaire, the praxis of the priesthood of all believers in the evangelical congregation of Schönblick as well as in the church of Bernhausen is examined, compared, and the hypothesis is tested. On the basis of the quantitative results a qualitative survey of the evangelical congregation of Schönblick is conducted with the help of various guided interviews. The analysis of the qualitative study is done using the Grounded Theory in a way that generates a hypothesis. Finally, the overall empirical result is put in juxtaposition to the ecclesiological concept of the priesthood of all believers in order to establish reasons for individual instructions of the believers as well as structural principles for the congregation. The doctoral thesis provides an empirical contribution to the understanding of the priesthood of all believers as a foundation of church growth.
