Mobile banking capabilities required to serve the unbanked market in South Africa

Mkhumbuza, Kongkong Siwalakahle 02 April 2013 (has links)
In developed countries, the business environment is highly saturated, with large numbers of banks, and mobile network operators. As a result, customers have a range of options in choosing preferential services providers. In Africa, most countries have dissimilar business environments; however, some countries have paved new frontiers in enabling access to financial services mainly through mobile banking services. In South Africa, a different situation prevails even though in certain instances the business environment is more advanced than other African countries. Over the past five years, South Africa reported upward trends in real income for LSM1-5 (living standard measure), and the number of mobile subscribers per household. Conversely, it also reported 60:40 ratios between the number of mobile subscribers and bank account holders with an expectation that the gap will grow further if key fundamentals are not revised in the banking sector. This research explored mobile banking capabilities required to serve the unbanked market of South Africa; and in doing so highlight the prospects of financial inclusion towards social and economic development, particularly when the firm seeks to offer products and services, which are reflective of the demographics of this country. Thus, as an exploratory study, it was necessary to gain insights from experts involved in designing, co-ordinating, and delivering mobile banking products and services. As a result, the research noted gaps in the products and services being offered across the different market segments. It also noted that in addressing these gaps; the banking sector requires participation from other key role players, such as the mobile network operators, regulator, and government. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Playfulness as a motivational tool : Using play to develop for an enhanced reception of swapping reusable goods / Lekfullhet som ett motiverande verktyg : Att använda lek i utvecklingen för en förbättrad upplevelse av att byta återanvändbara varor

Faraj, Zarah January 2015 (has links)
This study examines the field of playful design as a tool to affect and enhance the reception of a mundane activity. The management of swapping reusable household goods between neighbors is explored by designing playful components to enhance the experience. A pilot field study was carried out to observe recycling areas, in conjunction to 20 interviews being conducted regarding their point of views on recycling habits and their perception on their own local recycling area. The results show a clear indifferent attitude towards recycling and the environment surrounding the recycling area. However the interviewees were predominantly optimistic to the idea of swapping reusable goods with neighbors for its well-known advantages. Concerns were expressed on the practical efficiency and organization of such an activity, as well as on the shameful label perceived by using pre-used goods. A hybrid mobile application prototype was developed as one suggestion on how to incorporate playful design in a way that takes into consideration the needs and concerns of the users for swapping goods. Future research includes carrying out case studies on such playful applications for the current intended uses to gather insight on how they are utilized by potential users. Relevant are also empirical studies on how playful design as a tool may be used and its impact on users to get rid of perceived negative labels.

The use of a user-centric smart mobile application prototype for supporting safety and security in a city: a design science method

Mathijssen, Maxine 01 March 2022 (has links)
Cities have always been the drivers of innovation, growth and change. Cities around the world are still rapidly expanding, especially on the African and Asian continents. Cape Town is one of those cities, where urbanisation rates are high, and crime is persisting at alarmingly high levels with crime rates being among the worst in the country and the world. Additionally, the city is home to 7 of 10 worst-performing police services in the country. Combining these factors, there is a need to look at ‘smart' ways of growth which includes facilitating a safe and secure city for citizens. Although Cape Town is pursuing smart initiatives, these have failed to place communities and individuals among the key stakeholders in the smart planning process. This research focuses on further researching smart city initiatives in Cape Town, placing citizens at the centre of the development process. As Cape Town's mobile phone penetration rate is high and access to Internet is rapidly expanding, this research aims to use crowdsourcing techniques for developing a smart mobile application prototype that is focused on enhancing community engagement and facilitating increased perceived feelings of safety and security for citizens. The study uses a Design Science Research method with Cape Town citizens as the main stakeholders, to propose an artifact based on their wishes, needs and current issues faced with regards to safety and security in the city. The proposed artifact focuses on enhancing community engagement, through a chat room and user-logged incident reports, as well as a customised safe route planning functionality where users can send emergency signals to comembers with the use of GPS live location tracking. The research shows participants are willing to adopt the use of the mobile application prototype, given there is substantial community buy-in, and the functionalities in the app are easy to use and quickly accessible. The study further identifies the need for better police follow up and involvement, as the city's police system could benefit from crowd-sourced crime-data in reducing the number of crimes in neighbourhoods to make citizens feel more safe and secure.

Plan de negocios para implementar una aplicación que contribuya al cuidado de la salud

Quino Munguia, Flor Zenaida, Suárez Vilca, Luis Alberto, Vallejos Cuellar, Antonio Guillermo 22 March 2019 (has links)
More and more people are looking for a good state of health, and according to the definition developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), "health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not only the absence of conditions or diseases. " To achieve this goal, people should perform different activities such as having a healthy diet, an exercise routine, avoiding the consumption of toxic substances, regular medical check-ups, etc. In addition, generally, a person who has gone through operations or has performed various medical tests doesn’t have control over them. Therefore, when you go to a doctor's office and don’t have information about your care, you could ignore relevant issues to respond to an emergency and do not apply the appropriate care in the first instance. The importance of this increases above all for the parents, who control and monitor the care of their children underage. Considering that health care becomes relevant, a business opportunity aimed at contributing to health care has been identified. The alternative that we propose allows personal and family medical registration, separation of appointments, ranking of doctors, alerts on the taking of medicines and scheduled appointments and payment of these, advertising of clinics and pharmacies and location of clinics and pharmacies. All this, through an application administered by the patient, who would be responsible for recording information on medical care through images, voice or written recordings. With the proposed value proposition seeks to facilitate the health care of people and their families. / Trabajo de investigación
