User Centered Mobile IntranetApplication Design for Employees in the Field : Creating a concept mobile intranet application for fieldemployees

The intranet usage is continuously growing, but many companies have yet to advanceto mobile intranet solutions for employees who work out in the field. Also due to this,many of the existing mobile intranet solutions are not designed with the field employeesuser experience in mind, who would benefit most from the mobile intranets. In the case ofdesigning for employees in the field, what would the design look like? The objective of this thesis is to find a mobile intranet application concept that furthermostconsiders the field employees user experience. In this thesis, intranet, mobile intranetand design for intranets are investigated. Furthermore in the thesis, guidelines of mobiledesign for iOS and Android are examined. The evaluation of three current mobile intranetapplications are also presented. Ideation sketches, prototypes and a final concept applicationare developed based on interviews, literature and feedback from actual field employees. Theresults includes findings from the interviews, figures of the ideation sketches, illustration ofthe high-fidelity prototype and screenshots of the final concept application. At the end ofthe thesis, the concept application is discussed and problems that arose during the thesisare brought up.

Smartphone Based 3D Printed Colorimeter for Biomedical Applications

Here we present a novel Smartphone-based colorimeter and demonstrate its application to the measurements of glucose and protein concentrations in biological samples. The key innovation of our approach was to combine powerful image processing encoded into a mobile phone application with a low cost 3D printed sample holder that allowed to control lighting conditions and significantly improved sensitivity. Different solutions with protein and glucose concentrations ranging from 0 to 2000 mg/dL were prepared and analyzed using our system. The Smartphone-based colorimeter always correctly classified the corresponding reagent strip pads, what confirms that it can be used as a low cost alternative for commercial test strip analyzers.

Using React Native and AWS Lambda for cross-platform development in a startup

When developing mobile applications, the tradition has been to write code specific (native) for each platform they are running on. Usually it’s about writing two separate applications for the biggest platforms, Android and iOS. There exist alternatives to this approach that uses the same code for different platforms. React Native is a relatively new cross-platform development framework that makes it possible to use the same code for application to Android and iOS. It also uses native UI-elements as a possible solution for performance issues that is often associated with cross-plattform development. This thesis evaluates React Native and compares it against native Android. The implementation is done by replicating the main functionality from a social media application written as a native Android application. However, the application is not made as an exact replica since that could limit the solutions in React Native. The evaluation is done in a Startup company and therefore focuses on aspects important in a Startup. Another issue when developing a mobile application is what type of backend that shall be used. Performance, scalability and complexity are all important aspects when choosing a framework or language as a base for the backend architecture.There do exist theoretical frameworks that could be used when building the backend. However, these frameworks require resources that are often missing in a Startup. AWS Lambda is a platform that claims to be a cost-effective way of building a scalable application. In this thesis AWS Lambda is evaluated to see if it can be used to create an automatically scaled backend for this type of social media application. The conclusion of the React Native evaluation is that it can be a suitable alternative to native Android development. If the team has previous experience in web development but lack experience in mobile application development it can be a wise choice since it removes the need to learn two frameworks in native Android and native iOS development. React Native is also good to fast create functional prototypes which can be shown to potential investors. The biggest drawback is performance in animations. However, there are often ways to work around that. In our case this drawback did not affect the user experience of the end application. The evaluation of AWS Lambda concludes that it is not for every project. In this thesis, the application was a bit too database heavy and therefore the autoscaling ability did not work properly. However, for a service that needs a lot of computing power, AWS Lambda could be a good fit. It could also be a suitable alternative if someone in the team has previous experience in the AWS environment.

Mobile application rating based on AHP and FCEM : Using AHP and FCEM in mobile application features rating

Context. Software evaluation is a research hotspot of both academia and industry. Users as the ultimate beneficiary of software products, their evaluation becomes more and more importance. In the real word, the users’ evaluation outcomes as the reference for end-users selecting products, and for project managers comparing their product with competitive products. A mobile application is a special software, which is facing the same situation. It is necessary to find and test an evaluation method for a mobile application which based on users’ feedback and give more reference for different stakeholders. Objectives. The aim of this thesis is to apply and evaluate AF in mobile application features rating. There are three kinds of people, and three processes are involved in a rating method applying process, rating designers in rating design process, rating providers in the rating process, and end-users in selecting process. Each process has the corresponding research objectives and research questions to test the applicability of AF method and the satisfaction of using AF and using AF rating outcomes. Methods. The research method of this thesis is a mixed method. The thesis combined experiment, questionnaire, and interview to achieve the research aim. The experiment is using for constructing a rating environment to simulate mobile application evaluation in the real world and test the applicability of AF method. Questionnaire as a supporting method utilizing for collecting the ratings from rating providers. And interviews are used for getting the satisfaction feedback of rating providers and end-users. Results. In this thesis, all AF use conditions are met, and AF evaluation system can be built in mobile application features rating. Comparing with existing method rating outcomes, the rating outcomes of AF are correct and complete. Although, the good feelings of end-users using AF rating outcomes to selecting a product, due to the complex rating process and heavy time cost, the satisfaction of rating providers is negative. Conclusions. AF can be used in mobile application features rating. Although there are many obvious advantages likes more scientific features weight, and more rating outcomes for different stakeholders, there are also shortages to improve such as complex rating process, heavy time cost, and bad information presentation. There is no evidence AF can reply the existing rating method in apps stores. However, there is still research value of AF in future work.

With an upsurge in number of available smart phones, tablet PCs etc. most users find it easy to access Internet services using mobile applications. It has been a challenging task for mobile application developers to choose suitable security types (types of authentication, authorization, security protocols, cryptographic algorithms etc.) for mobile applications. Choosing an inappropriate security type for a mobile application may lead to performance degradation and vulnerable issues in applications. The choice of the security type can be done by decision making. Decision making is a challenging task for humans. When choosing a single alternative among a set of alternatives with multiple criteria, it is hard to know which one is the better decision. Mobile application developers need to incorporate Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Models to choose a suitable security type for mobile application. A decision model for application security enhances decision making for mobile application developers to decide and set the required security types for the application. In this thesis, we discuss different types of MCDM models that have been applied in an IT security area and scope of applying MCDM models in application security area. Literature review and evaluation of the selected decision models gives a detailed overview on how to use them to provide application security. / The first chapter introduces the thesis work. The second chapter presents the background of decision making models, their process, and the classification of decision making models. The third chapter presents the research methodology we have used in different phases which aims to answer the research questions. The fourth chapter gives a detailed literature study of how decision models can be used in application security. The fifth chapter evaluates selected decision models. The sixth chapter concludes the thesis and presents future work.

As companies want their mobile applications toreach a broader audience the demand for cross-platform applications is increasing.This master thesis was conducted at The Mobile Life in Gamla Stan, Stockholm, withthe objective of porting an iPhone application called Speed irt to the Android platform.Speed irt is a location based mobile dating application developed by Speed irt Pte Ltd andpromoted by Metro Sweden.This thesis investigates the techniques and frameworks that are currently available fordevelopment of cross-platform mobile applications, identifying the most suitable techniquefor porting Speed irt; furthermore, the eects of porting Speed irt between the platformswas investigated with respect to how the user experience was aected.The result of this thesis is a ported version of Speed irt available on the Android Market;furthermore a set of guidelines aimed at the preservation of user experience during portingis presented in this thesis report.

Evaluating usability aspects of a school photo mobile application

Context. The market for mobile applications is expanding rapidly. Companies that have web-based applications are required to supply their costumerswith mobile applications to not fall behind and lose their costumers. Portinga web-based application to a mobile platform is not only about decreasing thesize of the web-pages’ content. To succeed in porting a web-based applicationto a mobile platform the usability of the application must remain the sameand possibly be improved, otherwise the consequence is that users becomefrustrated and leave the mobile application. Objectives. The objectives of this thesis is to investigate how to structureand display the features of a school photo web-based application to a mobileapplication, and keep the usability. Methods. A literature study has been done to find guidelines for designingmobile applications. Three mobile application prototypes have been devel-oped. The prototypes have been tested with usability tests in a laboratoryexperiment to find usability problems if such exists, and to identify the mostusable alternative. The usability tests have been done with the target groupof the mobile application. Results. The most usable prototype was identified. Also, a list of recommen-dations are compiled from the experiment (such as, provide help text underthe icons to clarify the content of the icon), and specific improvements thatcan be done to the most usable prototype is also compiled. Conclusions. As a conclusion, the used guidelines and usability heuristicssupported the design of the prototypes and helped to get user-friendly inter-faces. Prototype III obtained the best results in the usability tests. The resultsalso showed that the Prototype III can be further improved. It has also beenfound that related applications such as Instagram, can be helpful in order toget usable and user-friendly interfaces.

This report is about the development of a prototype of a mobile application and a web application that will help diabetes patients in their own treatment and ease diabetes nurses work with their diabetes patients.   The mobile application is a digital version of a diabetes diary used by the Örebro County Council primary care to ease in diabetes treatments.   The report also covers tests with users which were conducted on potential users to get some sort of feedback from groups other than customer and colleagues. Tests with users showed that there was an interest in a mobile application and it was a highly appreciated project.   The web application ease diabetes nurses in their work with their diabetes patients in the way that the web application can display graphs of the patient's blood glucose level. / Rapporten handlar om utvecklingen av en prototyp för en mobilapplikation och en tillhörande webbapplikation som ska hjälpa diabetiker i deras självbehandling respektive underlätta diabetessköterskors arbete med sina diabetespatienter.   Mobilapplikationen är en digital version av en diabetesdagboken som används av Örebro läns landstings primärvård för att underlätta i diabetesbehandlingar.   Rapporten täcker även användartester som utfördes på potentiella användare för att få någon form av feedback från andra grupper än kund och medarbetare. Användartesterna visade på att det fanns ett intresse för en mobilapplikation och att det var ett mycket uppskattat projekt.   Webbapplikationen underlättar för diabetessköterskorna i deras arbete med sina diabetespatienter på det sättet att webbapplikationen kan visa grafer över patienters blodsockervärde.

App download decision from the perspective of Transaction Costs influence on App revenue model

Despite the huge market size of mobile applications and the large number of involved stakeholders fewresearch about app users’ intentions to download apps and factors affecting their decision had been carriedout. Current study examine app download decision from a transaction costs perspective and the effect of itselements on app download taking into consideration free and paid revenue model type for app. An onlinesurvey is developed to collect field data. One hundred and one valid response are obtained and used to testthe proposed research model. The findings indicated that transaction costs for app and market weresignificant driving factors that negatively impacted download for free model. Temporal asset specificityshowed to be an essential driving factor for app download. The research model gave positive indicationsabout transaction costs theory being a good framework to analyze app download decision.
