Health information tracking via mobile applications for individuals with chronic health conditions

By 2015, 149 million Americans are expected to be living with chronic health conditions (Anderson 2010). This number is expected to continue rising. Many chronic health conditions require those living with them to perform health self-management tasks on a regular basis. Nearly two in every five adults with one chronic condition and three out of every five adults with at least two chronic conditions track their health information. This paper investigates the use of mobile applications and the need to develop applications specifically designed for individuals living with chronic health conditions. Pew data are used to determine who is tracking their health information and how they are tracking it. Results from this analysis show that individuals with chronic health conditions have 69% greater odds of tracking health information than individuals who do not live with chronic conditions. Additionally, those with chronic conditions are 254% more likely than those without chronic conditions to track health indicators that are not related to diet, weight or exercise. These individuals are not, however, using mobile applications to track their health information. People with chronic health conditions have higher probabilities of tracking health information on paper or in their heads than their probability of tracking via a mobile application. However, the probability that individuals track health information via mobile apps increases when analyzing a subset of the population who own smartphones. After learning more about individuals with chronic conditions and their health information tracking habits, several mobile health applications are reviewed. The reviews of these applications include the features offered by the applications and their price. The paper concludes with several recommendations for developing and disseminating mobile health tracking applications to individuals with chronic conditions, as well as suggestions for future research. / text

The Impact of Pharmacy Mobile Application on Student Performance on NAPLEX-Based Questionnaire

Class of 2017 Abstract / Objectives: To determine if the use of RxSkills effectively improves student scores on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX)-based questions among third and fourth-year pharmacy students at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Pharmacy. Methods: This is a pre-post interventional study using a survey of volunteer students from the classes of 2016 and 2017 at the UA College of Pharmacy. An email calling for volunteers was sent using the listserv to students providing information regarding the study. Once the pre-test was completed, instructions for downloading the mobile application were sent to the students. After six weeks of RxSkills use, a link to the post-test was sent to the students for completion. Student scores on the NAPLEX-based questions, use of the application (frequency and duration) and helpfulness, and demographic data were collected. Results: The number of participants in the study from each class was similar with 15 students from the Class of 2016 (52%) and 14 from the Class of 2017 (48%). There was no correlation between how often RxSkills was used and improvement in scores. Overall, student score on the NAPLEX-based questions were significantly improved post-RxSkills use (mean 10.48, SD 2.49) compared to pre-RxSkills use (mean 9.68, SD 2.24) with a p-value of 0.03. Conclusions: The use of RxSkills resulted in an improvement in student scores on the NAPLEX-based questions, indicating its usefulness in studying for the NAPLEX. Students would benefit from using the application when studying for this exam.

On the market, there exist several universal applications which, however, require using some middleware, or they cannot be sufficiently modified to the customer specific needs. In this case comes the development of custom mobile application. The aim of this work is to analyze the requirements for such applications and based on this analysis propose a set of reusable components that will facilitate the development of these native applications on the Android platform. System Matylda was created in order to provide a database and web interface which allows sorting, filtering and comparing of products from food and drugstore industry. The goal of this thesis is to create a user friendly mobile application for this system. The application will be available for all today's major mobile platforms. The final application uses main features of the existing web application and also takes advantage of capabilities of modern mobile devices such as maps and user location. Some of the main features are searching for detailed product information, browsing discount leaflets, comparing discounts, creating shopping lists, authentication and more. Popisuje sdílení dat a zasílání zpráv mezi uživateli klientem a serverem. Srovnává dostupné protokoly pro komunikaci. V další kapitole je využití paměti na klientu při nedostupnosti připojení k internetu. Závěr se věnuje vizi dalšího vývoje projektu.

Testing of mobile applications. A review of industry practices

Context. With the rapid development of mobile devices, mobile applications have occupied an increasingly large market. Software testing is an important factor in ensuring software quality [59]. In order to develop high-quality mobile applications, software companies are increasingly paying attention to mobile application testing. We found that there are relatively few studies on mobile application testing methods and tools in the real industry, and this direction of research has been very helpful for some software companies' mobile application testing, so we chose this direction for exploratory research. Objectives. The purpose of our research is to investigate the software company's field of mobile application testing. We mainly study the methods and tools of mobile application testing that are now popular in enterprises, the challenges faced by mobile application testing in software companies and how they solve challenges. Method. We used two methods to answer our research questions. We chose literature review and survey as research methods. The literature review method gives us an insight into the areas of expertise and mobile testing. Survey is used to answer our research questions. Our data collection method is the questionnaire survey method. When we completed the data collection, we performed statistics and analysis on the data and answered our research questions. Result. Through the literature review method, we summarize the methods and tools for mobile application testing in the literature. By sending 46 surveys to different software companies, we analyzed and analyzed the methods and tools for mobile application testing that are popular in the enterprise and the reasons for choosing these methods. We also listed the company's mobile application testing. Challenges and solutions encountered. Conclusions. We answered all the research questions. We analyzed the feedback from 46 questionnaires and got information about mobile application testing. We read a lot of literature and summarized the relevant conclusions in the literature. Our findings can help people in related fields, and we can provide them with 46 data and analysis results. We can also provide mobile application methods and tools that are popular among readers in the enterprise.

Exploring Unsupervised Learning as a Way of Revealing User Patterns in a Mobile Bank Application

The purpose of this interdisciplinary study was to explore whether it is possible to conduct a data-driven study using pattern recognition in order to gain an understanding of user behavior within a mobile bank application. This knowledge was in turn used to propose ways of tailoring the application to better suit the actual needs of the users. In this thesis, unsupervised learning in the form of clustering was applied to a data set containing information about user interactions with a mobile bank application. By pre-processing the data, finding the best value for the number of clusters to use and applying these results to the K-means algorithm, clustering into distinct subgroups was possible. Visualization of the clusters was possible due to combining K-means with a Principal Component Analysis. Through clustering, patterns regarding how the different functionalities are used in the application were revealed. Thereafter, using relevant concepts within the field of human-computer interaction, a proposal was made of how the application could be altered to better suit the discovered needs of the users. The results show that most sessions are passive, that the device model is of high importance in the clusters, that some features are seldom used and that hidden functionalities are not used in full measure. This is either due to the user not wanting to use some functionalities or because there is a lack of discoverability or understanding among the users, causing them to refrain from using these functionalities. However, determining the actual cause requires further qualitative studies. Removing features which are seldom used, adding signifiers, active discovery as well as conducting user-tests are identified as possible actions in order to minimize issues with discoverability and understanding. Finally, future work and possible improvements to the research methods used in this study were proposed.

It deals with motivation. It researches leisure activities for children and organizations involved in them. In the practical part, the thesis uses survey to answer question. How much free time children spend using mobile phone and what kind of application they use. It offers list of application with a methodology of use and overlapping into the school environment. The list of applications serves for teachers, educators or parents, as a guide to active leisure activities with children using modern technology. Identifying Parental Perspectives on Healthy Eating and Mobile Application Usage

ReadNPlay for a Bright Future develops a variety of projects aimed at promoting healthy living in families with young children in Northeast Tennessee. The purposes of this research are: (1) to collect parents’ and caregivers’ perspectives on healthy eating for the purpose of designing a new book in the ReadNPlay children’s book series to be entitled A Farmers Market Adventure (2) to collect the preferences of parents and guardians related to website and mobile application (app) usage to help shape the development of a new ReadNPlay My Baby Book app. Anonymous clipboard surveys were administered to attendees of regional community events during July of 2013. Survey items asked parents about healthy eating in the context of their families and the role of parenting websites and mobile apps in their families. The results from these surveys were summarized using Excel. A total of 100 surveys were collected. It was found that when parents were asked to identify barriers to healthy eating, the most common responses were picky eaters in the household (30%) followed by lack of time (22%). When asked to identify things that have helped parents to encourage healthy eating in their families, the three most common responses were good recipes (20%), good role models (16%), and farmers markets (16%). Twenty-eight percent of parents surveyed do not use websites or apps for parenting, while those who do use parenting websites or apps identified advice from experts (20%) and advice from other parents (18%) to be the two features most commonly desired in such a resource. When asked what they do not like about website and app usage, 20% of parents indicated that these tools are “too complicated.” However, when parents are told that our group of pediatricians was developing a free mobile application for families designed to help them keep track of their baby’s growth, development, and eating habits, 75% of parents said such an app would be very helpful to them (25% said a little helpful). These results will inform a new ReadNPlay children’s book themed around healthy eating behaviors, overcoming pickiness, and shopping with families at farmers markets and a new ReadNPlay mobile app for families to be use in conjunction with infant-toddler well child visits.
