Modernism in mainstream magazines, 1920-37

Dawkins, Charlie January 2015 (has links)
This thesis studies five mainstream British weekly magazines: 'Time and Tide', the 'Nation and Athenaeum', the 'Spectator', the 'Listener', and the 'New Statesman'. It explores how these magazines reviewed, discussed and analysed modernist literature over an eighteen-year span, 1920-37. Over this period, and in these magazines, the concept of modernism developed. Drawing on work by philosopher Ian Hacking, this research traces how the idea of modernism emerged into the public realm. It focuses largely on the book reviews printed in these magazines, texts that played an important and underappreciated role in negotiations between modernist texts and the audience of these magazines. Chapter 1, on 'Time and Tide', covers a period from the magazine's inception in 1920 to 1926, and draws particularly on Catherine Clay's work on this magazine. It discusses the genre of 'weekly review' that this new magazine attempted to join, and the cultural place of modernism in the early 1920s. Chapter 2, on the 'Nation and Athenaeum', covers Leonard Woolf's literary editorship (1923-30), under the ownership of J. M. Keynes, and makes use of Keynes's archive at King's College, Cambridge, and Woolf's at the University of Sussex. Chapter 3, on the 'Spectator', covers Evelyn Wrench's editorship (1925-32), and explores the relationship between this magazine, ideologies of conservatism, and modernism. Chapter 4, on the 'Listener', focuses on the magazine's publication of new poetry, including an extraordinary 1933 supplement that printed W. H. Auden's 'The Witnesses'. This work revolves around Janet Adam Smith, literary editor in these years, and draws on Smith's archive at the National Library of Scotland as well as the BBC archives at Caversham. Chapter 5, on the 'New Statesman' in the 1930s under new editor Kingsley Martin, explores a period when modernism was more widely recognized, and pays particular attention to a short text by James Joyce printed in 1932, 'From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer'.

Marques, Helton. January 2012 (has links)
It can be verified, for example, in Menino de engenho, debut book, published in 1932, in which the autodiegetic narrator joins his childhood memories, determined by the sign of loss, and depicts the historical and social situation in the Northeastern region during the period when the patriarchal family was in decline. Therefore, this dissertation objectives to develop a study about the representation of childhood in the context of the patriarchal family in Brazil and to verify how the social element has an important role in the constitution of the narrative structure, in other words, analyzing how literary form and content are different aspects that complement each other along the story / Mestre

Rebellion to the Gods : dialogue and conflict with tradition in the poetry of Amelia Rosselli from 'Primi Scritti' to 'Variazioni belliche'

Carpita, Chiara January 2014 (has links)
This thesis focuses on Intertexuality in the Poetry of Amelia Rosselli from Primi Scritti (1952-1963) to Variazioni belliche (1959-1961). The research is based on the annotated books of the author's personal library kept in the Fondo Rosselli of Viterbo and of her personal documents, letters and original typescripts of her works held in the Centro Manoscritti Autori Moderni e Contemporanei of the University of Pavia. Rosselli's annotations are studied for the first time and they have proved to be essential for the interpretation of her poetry. Rosselli's aspiration to Gesamtskunstwerk is reflected in the composition of her library which ranges from musicology, quantum physics, Gestalt psychology, history of art and philosophy. I explored the influence of these disciplines in her work adopting an interdisciplinary approach. In particular I concentrate on the influence that her studies in etnomusicology have had on the style of her poetry. The theoretical framework of Julia Kristeva and Gian Biagio Conte enable me to draw two main intertexual strategies in Rosselli's poetry: the intertexuality of harmonics, and parody. Rosselli's use of literary allusion is a very original one: it is based on her work as a musicologist, which she articulates in the essay La serie degli armonici. In this essay Rosselli studied natural harmonics in music. Allusions develop into an intertextual fugue creating a mîse en abyme effect. Another type of allusion is the parody in which the poetic I acting as the fool challenges the literary fathers of Tradition in order to find her own space in the canon. The study of intertextuality has also some important consequences on a literary hystoriographic perspective: I recognized in her poetry what Detloff called 'the persistence of Modernism'. Her work like the one of Anglo-American modernists is characterized by a form of resilience to trauma and loss. Like the literature of survivors, Rosselli's deals with the expression of inexpressible, the fragmentation of the poetic I, and the will of re-writing her own story to overcome trauma. The ultimate result is a political and ethical cry for social justice, symphathy and peace.

This work aims at identifying, describing and analising Femando Pessoa's Interseccionism. The research makes use of five different contexts, all of them based on the poem "Chuva Oblíqua": 1) Cubism; 2) a group of selected French poems from the end of the 19thcentury; 3) a group of poems of Cancioneiro, Odes de Alvaro de Campos and "Mensagem"; 4) "O Guardador de Rebanhos"; and 5) Livro do Desassossego. Each one of these contexts provides a different point of view to read "Chuva Oblíqua". Despite Pessoa's statements, this style generates multiple discursivities in his work, and gives us an important key to reinterpret the heteronomy / Doutorado / Literatura Portuguesa / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Entre a 'Prata de Casa' e o Espelho Estrangeiro : o modernismo tradicista dinamico de Eugenio Gomes / Betwee the 'Prata de Casa' and of Espelho Estrangeiro : modernism and intelectual trajectory of the literary critic Eugenio Gomes

Valente, Monalisa 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Antonio Arnoni Prado / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T11:24:15Z (GMT). / Abstract: This study presents the critical thinking insights of Eugênio Gomes (1897-1972), with focus and ramifications of that thought in their aesthetic and comparative studies of literary works of traditional and modernity writers. Using a historical-sociological approach, trying to link the adoption of some methodological criteria of this intellectual related to his controversial positions considered by contemporary (coeval) colleagues, from the 1940s, facing the Brazilian society perspectives. Data relating to Eugênio Gomes participation in discussions on literary art in the 1920s and to approximations or divergencies around the traditionalist dynamic peculiarities, established in Bahia, with the forms of the modernist movement in other states situated in Brazilian Northeastern and Southeastern regions, were included in this study. With this comparison, we tried to verify the possibility of a "modernism of order", as well as the peculiar historical conditions of some localities which encouraged the development of a movement in that approach. Thus, based on documents found in archives, in studies of Brazilian literary criticism, and in theoretical and artistic works, it was tried to analyze both strands elected by Eugênio Gomes, in his literary exercise, as their positions in his public activities that could elucidate some of his mediation in dealing with national and foreign literature works. / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária
