O cultivar Marandu apresentou maior armazenabilidade durante todo o experimento / Abstract: Brachiaria species normally show a double seed dormancy mechanism, mainly on fresh-harvest seeds, leading to germination percentages lower than those of viability detected by Tetrazolium test, so causing problems as to storage, trading and seed inspection activities. Using the methodology to detect the constants of the viability equation (high storage temperatures and fixed moisture contents) it was feasible in this research to isolate the effects of 40, 50 and 65°C on Brachiaria brizantha cultivars Marandu, Mulato 1 and Mulato 2 seed dormancy releasing, after storage at moisture contents ranging from 1.9 and 17.8%. Seed samples used presented high seed dormancy levels, detected by Tetrazolium test and it was released by chemical scarification and partially by accelerated ageing test. No statistical differences were observed as to speed of germination (T50); however, differences were detected as to number of seed per gram among cultivars. Sorption and desorption isotherm curves were similar for the cultivars. The best results of seed dormancy releasing at 40°C were achieved at 9.5 and 8.5% moisture content, for cultivars Marandu e Mulato 1 respectively; seed dormancy releasing results were obtained at 50°C for all moisture content studied and the best results were achieved for cultivars Marandu (7.6 e 10.3%) and Mulato 1 (8.3%). At 65°C seed dormancy releasing results were not clear. The cultivar Marandu presented higher storability than the others throughout the experiment / Mestrado / Tecnologia Pós-Colheita / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

Evaluation of Ethiopian nigerseed (Guizotia abyssinica Cass) production, seed storage and virgin oil expression

Melaku, Eneyew Tadesse 29 January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate factors influencing seed yield, postharvest handling, and the oil expression efficiency for nigerseed (Guizotia abbysinica Cass.). Based on field study on two varieties, two locations, three seed rates and three fertilizer rates the highest mean nigerseed yield was 1384.6 kg ha-1 at Adet location (rain fed) followed by location Koga (rain) with 1064.7 kg ha-1 and Koga (irrigation) with 967.0 kg ha-1 showing significant difference. The oil content by location was 41.54% for Koga (rain) followed by 39.59 and 38.67% for Koga (irrigation) and Adet (rain) respectively showing significant difference whereas the Ash content showed a reverse trend of oil content. Fatty acid composition did not show significant difference in any treatment. Significant mean alpha-tocopherol of 80 mg/100 g (70 to 89 mg/100 g) was attained for increasing seed and nitrogen rates. Based on two temperatures and seven relative humidities model evaluation and monolayer moisture content estimation, Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) models was found to best suit both varieties as compared to Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET), and modified Chung &Pfost. For oil expression efficiency, 90ºC seed conditioning showed significant effect compared to 80 and 70ºC however conditioning times and feed rates did not differ significantly.

Response of concrete pavements under moving vehicular loads and environmental effects

Darestani, Mostafa Yousefi January 2007 (has links)
The need for modern transportation systems together with the high demand for sustainable pavements under applied loads have led to a great deal of research on concrete pavements worldwide. Development of finite element techniques enabled researchers to analyse the concrete pavement under a combination of axle group loadings and environmental effects. Consequently, mechanistic approaches for designing of concrete pavements were developed based on results of finite element analyses. However, unpredictable failure modes of concrete pavements associated with expensive maintenance and rehabilitation costs have led to the use of empiricalmechanistic approach in concrete pavement design. Despite progressive knowledge of concrete pavement behaviour under applied loads, concrete pavements still suffer from deterioration due to crack initiation and propagation, indicating the need for further research. Cracks can be related to fatigue of the concrete and/or erosion of materials in sub-layers. Although longitudinal, midedge and corner cracks are the most common damage modes in concrete pavements, Austroads method for concrete pavement design was developed based on traditional mid-edge bottom-up transverse cracking introduced by Packard and Tayabji (1985). Research presented in this thesis aims to address the most common fatigue related distresses in concrete pavements. It uses comprehensive finite element models and analyses to determine the structural behaviour of concrete pavements under vehicular loads and environmental effects. Results of this research are supported by laboratory tests and an experimental field test. Results of this research indicate that the induced tensile stresses within the concrete pavement are significantly affected by vehicle speed, differential temperature gradient and loss of moisture content. Subsequently, the interaction between the above mentioned factors and concrete damage modes are discussed. Typical dynamic amplifications of different axle groups are presented. A new fatigue test setup is also developed to take into consideration effects of pavement curvature on fatigue life of the concrete. Ultimately, results of the research presented in this thesis are employed to develop a new guide for designing concrete pavements with zero maintenance of fatigue damage.

Hårdgörning av Asp / Densification of Aspen Wood

Johansson, Martin January 2008 (has links)
To make wood harder it can be densified. This can be achieved by compression, the compressed material tends to return to the original shape when it is exposed to moisture fluxations and if no form of fixation occurs. The fixation can be done mechanically in a three-layer panel construction which reduce movements in the timber. These panels have been found to be unstable and previous attempts have shown deformations in form of cupping. This study aims to evaluate the conditions for using compressed aspen wood, and to provide a basis for development of a commercial product. Practical tests have been conducted to study hardness, springback and density of the compressed wood. In addition, three-layer panels have been developed to test whether it is possible to have a stable construction by varying the thickness of the buttom layer. Differences in acclimatisation time and the moisture contents effect on the springback has aslo been studied. The results show that the hardness of aspen wood after compression is in equal levels with beech and ashes, a low moisture contet provides a low springback, compressed timber have a longer time for acclimatisation and it is possible to fixate the material in the direction across the grain in a three-layer panel construction.
