In the field of derivational morphology, it is hard to find word formation patterns that may be applied to every base satisfying its context of application. This means that the productivity of derivational patterns is often limited. Among the causes of this limitation, we find that potential words are blocked by existing lexical items in many cases; in other cases, they are preempted by expressions formed by rival derivational patterns. This work devotes itself to exploring these instances of competition. We start by exploring the concept of productivity and by investigating how to understand quantitative differences between rival patterns in this respect. We then proceeed to a more detailed discussion of morphological competition and the fundamental notion of blocking, comparing a pragmatic approach to this phenomenon with lexicalist grammatical theories. Finally, we present the model of Albright e Hayes (1999) and later works, which explores the idea that the reliability of morphological patterns in different phonological contexts is a key determinant of the productivity of these patterns and the competition between them. We test this model on data formed by the suffixes -ção and -mento, which have been in competition for a long time in Portuguese. These data come from Dicionário Houaiss 3.0 and from a corpus created from newspapers and blogs with the help of software developed for this research. Our results suggest that the continued productivity of -mento throughout history, even after -ção had become the dominant nominalization pattern in the language, was supported by the existence of phonological contexts in which -mento reaches a high degree of reliability. Given the productivity of the first conjugation, contexts of application of -mento in words of this verbal class have shown to be especially important. We show that a statistical model equipped with these generalizations is able to predict the choice between these affixes in most cases.

THE EFFECT OF COLLECTION AND ESTABLISHMENT SEASON, PLANTING ORIENTATION AND ATTACHED CULMS ON THE SURVIVAL AND GROWTH OF ARUNDINARIA GIGANTEA (WALT.) MUHL. (GIANT CANE) RHIZOME PROPAGULESBrendecke, William Walter 01 January 2008 (has links)
Arundinaria gigantea (Walt.) Muhl. (giant cane) is a native North American bamboo. The mass assemblages of giant cane stems (culms) can form monotypic stands called "canebrakes" with historic distribution encompassing floodplains of the southeastern United States. Canebrake ecosystems have served as an important habitat for a variety of mammalian, avian, and reptilian species due in part by the protective nature the dense culms provide. Also, giant cane also can serve as an effective riparian zone buffer for the protection of water quality. Land conversion and altered disturbance regimes have reduced cane to 2% of historical accounts. Consistently, there is great interest in restoring canebrake ecosystems. However, canebrake restoration efforts face difficulties such as infrequent seeding and low viability, limited availability of seedlings or rhizome planting stock, and inefficient establishment and management techniques. To address these problems, two studies were designed to further develop giant cane propagation thereby aiding management efforts intended in restoring canebrake ecosystems. Study 1 (greenhouse) objective was to compare the survivability and growth responses of bare rhizomes and rhizomes with attached and trimmed culms with different planting orientation. Study design was a randomized complete block with approximately 20 rhizomes of each propagule type (bare rhizomes, rhizomes with culms trimmed to 3cm and rhizomes with culms trimmed to 20cm) planted in two orientations (buried flat or angled and partially exposed) in each of 4 benches (N=239). Propagule type and planting orientation were determined randomly. After six months, propagule survival was 86% and was independent of orientation (chi square 1df = 1.56, p=0.212) and propagule type (chi square 2df =3.88, p=3.88). There was an interaction between planting orientation and propagule type for the number of new rhizomes and culms, above ground biomass, but not for newly formed rhizome diameter or cumulative culm and rhizome length. Rhizome propagules with attached trimmed culms produced, on average, one more rhizome and were 71 cm longer than newly formed rhizomes from the bare rhizome propagules. Planting orientation had no effect on any measured character of long culmed propagules, burying the short-culmed or bare rhizomes tended to reduce growth responses. However, among exposed propagules, growth responses tended to be similar. Study 2 (field-scale) objective was to determine if genotype (3 collection sources) and collection season/ planting season (C/P) (fall/fall, fall/spring, spring/spring) affect survival and growth of giant cane. Study design was a randomized complete block design with between 12 and 20 bare rhizomes per each of 3 collection sources (subplots) planted in each of 3 rows (collection season/ planting season main plots) blocked 6 times across 2 sites (N=2086). Location of collection sources within subplots and C/P within plots were randomly chosen. Rhizomes were planted in rows using a tree planter. Mean survival of cane plants after one growing season was similar at each site with a mean of 11.1%. Survival was dependent on collection source and C/P seasons. Survival ranged from a high of 38.3% for the spring/spring planted Upper Cache River source to 0.4% for two of the other 9 treatment combinations. Collecting and planting rhizomes in the spring for two of the three collection sources produced the highest percent survival compared to stock collected in the fall then planted or stored until spring. These results suggest the importance of collection source, collection season, planting season, propagule morphology and orientation on the survival and new growth of giant cane in southern Illinois.

Functional Morphology of the Postcranium of Theropithecus brumpti (Primates: Cercopithecidae)Guthrie, Emily Henderson 12 1900 (has links)
xvi, 169 p. : ill. (some col.) / This dissertation describes the postcranial functional morphology of Theropithecus brumpti , a fossil cercopithecoid primate from the Plio-Pleistocene of East Africa. Theropithecus is often used as an analogue for human evolution, but much of our understanding of its paleobiology is based on the grassland adapted Theropithecus oswaldi , masking potential morphological and ecological breadth within the genus and limiting its use as an ecological comparator. To better understand the evolutionary history and ecological breadth of the genus, an analysis of the woodland associated T. brumpti is presented.
All available T. brumpti postcranial material is included, along with comparative data on T. oswaldi and a large extant sample. Skeletal elements were metrically described using 125 postcranial measurements believed to have functional relevance. Measurements were transformed into 46 ratios to reflect shape and the functional lengths over which muscles act and to reduce the effects of differences in scale among individuals and species.
Contrary to previous findings, there is no evidence T. brumpti was arboreal; rather it is clearly a terrestrial papionin. While T. brumpti retains a degree of flexibility (at the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle), this is not exceptional when compared to other members of the genus, notablyT. oswaldi . Not only are traits similar in both species, but there is a wide range of variation and overlap in both. Features historically used to reconstructT. brumpti as more arboreal are interpreted here as part of a suite of traits that characterize early Theropithecus . This suite of traits may instead be adaptations to manual terrestrial foraging, in particular adaptations related to forest floor locomotion and gleaning, which may be primitive for Theropithecus and possibly for papionins. This interpretation of the paleobiology of T. burmpti compared to that of T. oswaldi offers a parallel with hominins. New fossil evidence suggests use of terrestrial substrates in more woodland habitats for late Miocene to early Pliocene hominins, in contrast to more open habitats associated with later hominins. Therefore, this dissertation develops a framework for understanding the woodland to grassland transition among large bodied primates including hominins. / Committee in charge: Stephen Frost, Chairperson;

Morphology and lexicon of the Romany dialect of Kotel (Bulgaria)Kenrick, Donald Simon January 1969 (has links)
This thesis describes the morphology and lexicon of the dialect of Romany spoken in Kotel, Bulgaria. The introduction shows the position of the dialect within Bulgarian Romany and gives brief details of its speakers (pp 12-15). A phonological transcription is used for the morphology and lexicon. This reveals the relationship between Kotel and other dialects, a relationship normally concealed by its phonetic system. The paradigmatic affixes added to nominals are listed with their variants and specimen paradigms are given (pp 16-31) . Verbs are similarly treated, with special notes on medio-passives and impersonal verbs (pp 32-42). The affixes used in building compound-words are listed with their variants and numerous examples (pp 43-59) o A brief note is included on some non-productive methods of word-formation (p. 60). The changes undergone by loan-words from Turkish and Bulgarian are summarized, together with the paradigmatic affixes used with loans from these languages and Greek (pp 61-66). Two texts are given in phonological transcription with a translation and notes, to illustrate the morphology (pp 67-94). A Romany-English lexicon follows, together with some shorter word-lists(pp 95-202) . The lexicon excludes those loan-words which are freely formed by stated rules from Turkish and Bulgarian, languages with which the people are familiar. Finally phonological rules are given which conver the symbols used up to this point into a broad phonetic transcription (pp 203-211), and a text in parallel phonological and phonetic transcription illustrates the application of these rules (pp 212-219). A concise bibliography concludes the study.

4th Generation Ziegler-Natta catalysts (Z-N catalysts) are prepared with magnesium dichloride support with controlled morphology, obtained from ethanolic adducts of magnesium dichloride (MgCl2.nEtOH). The objective of this work was to optimize the balance between the independent variables reagent concentration, emulsion agitation speed and transfer pressure, in the preparation of the adduct with morphological control. The ethanolic adducts with spherical morphology control were prepared by controlled transfer of the molten adduct at 125 °C and quenching in nonsolvent at - 50 °C using the Controlled Turbulence Emulsion Method (CTEM). The activation of MgCl2.nEtOH was done by chemical route to remove the ethanol and consequently increase the surface area of the support. The adducts were prepared with EtOH/MgCl2 molar ratio of 3.5 or 63% (w/w) ethanol. The experiments were performed according to factorial design 23 at two levels and replicated central point. The dependent variables were the mean diameter and particle size distribution of the carrier, compacted bulk density, morphology and alcohol content incorporated in the adduct. The Z-N’s catalysts were obtained from TiCl4-treated media and an internal electron donor, and tested in standard polypropylene polymerization. It has been observed that size control (median diameter) of the carrier particle is highly dependent on the transfer rate, controlled by the pressure in the fusion reactor. The concentration of the reagent ( [MgCl2] ) had a significant effect on the four dependent variables. The stirring rate in the melt reactor or the cast adduct emulsion had significant effect only on the morphology of the support, this effect being smaller than that observed for the transfer pressure. The stirring speed was not significant in the CTEM transfer process, which is more susceptible to pressure variation in the reactor.

EFEITO DO REGULADOR DE CRESCIMENTO TRINEXAPAC-ETHYL EM CULTIVARES DE ARROZ IRRIGADO / EFFECT OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATOR TRINEXAPAC-ETHYL IN CULTIVARS OF RICEEstevo, Ana Paula 15 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aims to evaluate the effects of plant growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl on rice cultivars, checking agronomically feasible dose and the effect of these doses on the morphology of plants on yield components and on reducing lodging plant. In this sense, two trials were held, one in the field to evaluate the effects of doses of trinexapac-ethyl on yield components over the biological cycle, about flowering. The second study was performed in greenhouse. The objective is evaluate the effects of increasing doses of trinexapac-ethyl on the morphology of plants of two cultivars of rice: a japonica cultivar (Bojurú) and one Indica cultivar (IRGA 422 CL). Experimental results show that the plant growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl applied in increasing doses, causes changes in the morphology of plants, shortening between-us, reducing plant height, leaf area and interfering in shoot dry mass, reducing bedding plants and interfering negatively in yield components, especially in the percentage of whole grains and broken grains.

A Microbiota Cecal (MC) antes da infecção, evita as alterações morfofuncionais causadas pela bactéria nos cecos dos pintos de corte, além disso, a MC induz a proliferação de células caliciformes PAS+ e AB+ e, conseqüentemente aumenta a produção de muco, sendo um fator de proteção ao epitélio cecal / This study aimed to describe the morphological changes occurred in the caecu, of males and females broiler chickens treated with Cecal Microbiote (CM) before and after the infection with Salmonella enterica enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) during the first week of life. On the first day of life, chickens were treated with CM before and after the infection with SE. Throughout the experimental period, the clinical conditions as much as the mortality rates were observed. On 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th days post infection (dpi), four birds of each sex/treatment were slaughtered by cervical dislocation in order to obtain samples from the caecum for morphological analysis (histology and scanning electron microscopy), morphometrical analysis and counting of the number of inflammatory and goblet cells PAS+ and AB+. The data showed some diarrhea episodes and depression symptoms in the chickens infected with SE on 5th and 7th dpi; in this period it was not observed any mortality. Concerning the morphological analysis, the chicks infected with SE respond to infectious process with and acute inflammatory process on 1st dpi and after the 3rd dpi the process gets chronicle. The Cecal Microbiote (CM) prior to infection avoid the morphological and functional alterations caused by the bacteria in broiler chickens caecum, in addition, the CM induces the proliferation of goblet cells PAS+ and AB+ and consequently increases mucus production being a protection factor to the caecum epithelium

The aimed was to evaluate diets containing plasma and or yeast extract on performance (DWG - daily weight gain, DFI - daily feed intake and FC -feed conversion) and the intestinal morphology of the piglets from 7 to 63 days of age. There were used 288 piglets from 7 days of age and 2.57 ± 0.05 kg, distributed in a randomized block design with four treatments, six replicates and twelve piglets in each experimental unit. The experimental units pre-initial I (from 7 to 21 days of age), preinitial II (from 22 to 35 days of age) and initial I (from 36 to 49 days of age) were: control diet (CD) - without including plasma and / or yeast extract, plasma diet (PL) - inclusions of 6, 4 and 2% plasma; yeast extract diet (YE) - inclusions 6, 4 and 2% of yeast extract, and plasma diet + yeast extract (PL + YE) - additions of 3, 2 and 1% of plasma and yeast extract, respectively. From 50 to 63 days of age, all animals received the same diet. At 28 and 49 days of age, were killed six animals of each experimental diet for evaluations of the structure and ultra structure of the duodenum and jejunum. It was observed that from 7 to 21 and from 7 to 28 days of age, no variable performance was affected (P> 0.05), but from 7 to 35 days of age, the DWG was higher (P <0.05) on the piglets fed with diet PL + YE. From 7 to 49 and from 7 to 63 days of age, it was noted (P <0.05) DWG and DFI in the animals fed with diet PL + YE compared to those fed with the diet CD. The structure and ultra structure were not affected (P> 0.05). We conclude that the combination of plasma and yeast extract promotes a superior weight gain, but does not affect the intestinal morphology of pigs from 7 to 63 days of age
