Urban Policy Implications on the Electric Vehicle Transition in Berlin and Washington, DC

Sänger, Tina January 2018 (has links)
This thesis argues for an approach which goes beyond the conventional urban climate governance view. With engagement in social-technical practices, a more sustainable and inclusive way of transforming the city can be accomplished. One way of doing so is with the offering of the urban living lab as a playground for real-life experiments. With a purposive intervention in an urban socio-technical system, the three- dimensional concept of urban environmental governance, socio-technical experiments and strategic experiments with designed policies can create a more sustainable urban transition. The urban electric vehicle transition is just one example of how these three concepts can be applied. In order to demonstrate the interaction of a sustainable urban transition, an empirical case study was conducted.   This thesis makes a conceptual contribution by engaging with current understanding of urban sustainability transition, using the urban electric vehicle transition as a reference point. The insights of this study extend the theories of the socio-technical system and argue that it is not only about social and technological innovation but how multiple innovations are experimented with and combined in an existing urban context. In addition, the research addresses how this transition is governed on a municipality level and is achieved through a multiple case study approach, analysed through the lens of environmental governance and offers an empirical exploration and develops the theoretical and conceptual framework of the socio-technical system further.

Mineralogical speciation of sulfur in acid sulfate soils from Luleå, Sweden

Gunnarsson, Niklas January 2018 (has links)
Marine sulfide – bearing sediments that oxidize when in contact with oxygen and leach outelements in high concentrations to small watercourses have been a problem for many years allover the world especially around the Bothnian Bay. The purpose of this study was to furtherinvestigate the sulfur mineralogy present in acid sulfate soils in the area of Luleå, Sweden. Asecondary aim was to see if elements leach out and accumulate in an acid sulfate soil closer tothe recipient. Samples were taken in two profiles (one oxidized and one waterlogged) fromfour sites (sites A-D) and were analyzed for whole rock geochemistry. Two sites were furtherinvestigated for mineralogy in polished samples with an optical microscope, Ramanspectroscopy and SEM-EDS. Each profile consisted of three layers: oxidation zone, transitionzone and reduced zone. The oxidation zone above the groundwater table was light grey withbrown iron hydroxide staining. Parts that lied under the water table were dark grey-black within general strong odor (“rotten eggs”) due to its sulfur content. It was usually straightforwardto distinguish and separate the layers from each other directly in the field, however in somecases pH was needed for confirmation.A general feature of investigated polished samples is the presence of abundant framboidalpyrites that are common in reduced marine sediments. The transition zone was formed in suboxicconditions and this feature is reflected by the mineralogy. Many morphologies of theframboidal pyrite were observed in this layer and signs of both dissolution and formationoccur. In the sample from site C one could observe elemental sulfur in form of large (up to 50μm) euhedral crystals. In the samples with pH<4, no sulfides occur as they have been replacedby jarosite (site B). Site C lacks these sulfur-bearing hydroxides which is thought to be due toa sulfur concentration of <0.2 %. Sulfur shows extensive leaching at most sites but at site B andD1, it accumulates in the transition zone. Elements like cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn)are leached out or are accumulated further down in the profile. Elements that could have beentransported and have accumulated in the waterlogged profiles are Co, Ni, Zn and chromium(Cr) and in some profiles also copper (Cu) and vanadium (V). / Coastal watercourses in Bottenviken: Method development and ecological restoration- A cross-border Swedish-Finnish cooperation project

Achard, Timothée 08 December 2017 (has links)
To improve the structural design of flexible wings, gradient based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) techniques are effective and widely used. However, gradients calculation is not trivial and can be costly when high-fidelity models are considered. Our objective is to study different suitable approaches to compute gradients of aeroelastic loads with respect to structural design parameters. To this end, two high-fidelity aero-structure gradient computation techniques for strongly coupled aeroelastic systems are proposed. The most intrusive technique includes the well-established direct and adjoint formulations that require substantial implementation effort. In contrast, we propose an alternative uncoupled non-intrusive approach easier to implement and yet capable of providing accurate gradients approximations. Both techniques have been implemented in the Onera elsA CFD software.Accuracy, efficiency and applicability of these methods are demonstrated on the civil transport aircraft Common Research Model (CRM) test-case. More specifically, an inverse design problem is set up with the objective of matching an in-flight target twist law distribution. These two methods prove to be comparable in terms of accuracy and cost. Thus they offer additional operational flexibility depending on the level of integration sought in the MDO process.

Application of multidisciplinary design optimisation frameworks for engine mapping and calibration

Kianifar, Mohammed R. January 2014 (has links)
With ever-increasing numbers of engine actuators to calibrate within increasingly stringent emissions legislation, the engine mapping and calibration task of identifying optimal actuator settings is much more difficult. The aim of this research is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO) frameworks to optimise the multi-attribute steady state engine calibration optimisation problems. Accordingly, this research is concentrated on two aspects of the steady state engine calibration optimisation: 1) development of a sequential Design of Experiment (DoE) strategy to enhance the steady state engine mapping process, and 2) application of different MDO architectures to optimally calibrate the complex engine applications. The validation of this research is based on two case studies, the mapping and calibration optimisation of a JLR AJ133 Jaguar GDI engine; and calibration optimisation of an EU6 Jaguar passenger car diesel engine. These case studies illustrated that: -The proposed sequential DoE strategy offers a coherent framework for the engine mapping process including Screening, Model Building, and Model Validation sequences. Applying the DoE strategy for the GDI engine case study, the number of required engine test points was reduced by 30 – 50 %. - The MDO optimisation frameworks offer an effective approach for the steady state engine calibration, delivering a considerable fuel economy benefits. For instance, the MDO/ATC calibration solution reduced the fuel consumption over NEDC drive cycle for the GDI engine case study (i.e. with single injection strategy) by 7.11%, and for the diesel engine case study by 2.5%, compared to the benchmark solutions.

The aim of the present work was to understand the effects of Goalball practice in mobilizing the learning of phenomena and physical concepts of students with visual impairment in physics classes. It should be emphasized that when it comes to an education for all, it refers to the idea of giving students opportunities for access and permanence in school, with the same equality conditions, respecting their singularities. When addressing the issue of differences, it does not refer only to minorities or children with special needs. It is much broader, because all human beings are unique, therefore different from each other. Mobilization, a category of Relation with Knowledge (Charlot, 2000), was used as a theoretical contribution to the research. Having as a central question: What is the role of Goalball in the process of mobilizing the learning of students with visual impairment in teaching physics ?, sought to reflect on the involvement in an activity that creates meaning, desire and pleasure in the teaching and learning process of the students. There were two students, one male student (enrolled in the second year of high school) and the other female (enrolled in the third year of high school). It is a qualitative research of the participatory type, having as data collection instruments the observations of the classes, field diary, reorganized knowledge balance, semistructured interview and the organization of data based on the Descriptive analysis, Gil (2008). In this context, the research was exposed on the effects of Goalball in the physics classes in the students by a Mobilization, Searching, Remembering, Learning more easily, Reinforcing and Improving exercises and articles presented.

Bicycle accidents: An analysis of the causes of single bicycle accidents in Stockholm

Nseya, Cecile January 2018 (has links)
Bicycling has many advantages. For example, it emits less noise compared to motor vehicles, it is environmentally friendly, and bicycling, as a means of transport, gives people exercise. To encourage bicycling in Sweden, the Swedish government has promoted policies and proposals on national and local levels. At the same time, several pieces of research on bicycle use in Sweden show that more people are bicycling now than 60 years ago. STRADA’s (Swedish Traffic Accident Data Acquisition) reports also show that most people who are severely injured in traffic are bicyclists, and that most bicycle accidents occur in urban and metropolitan areas.   Stockholm is a European city with a growing population. At the end of 2013 the population were 897 700    and it is predicted to grow by 25 % by 2030. The municipality of Stockholm is working on investment projects for bicyclists with the aim to increase accessibility and road safety such as special road safety measures at intersections that often aim at improving road conditions for both pedestrians and bicyclists, and better maintenance of bicycle paths, both in summers and winters. Critics and different debate articles about bicyclists` safety and accessibility point out that the investments that Stockholm municipality is making are not enough for meeting the growing population, especially for bicyclists.   The aim of this study is to analyse the causes of bicycle accidents in the city of Stockholm. To help answer the research questions stated below, statistics on bicycle accidents were extracted in Excel from Strada and compiled in Excel using the Excel tool PivotTable and Analysis Tool Pak. The questions investigated in the thesis are as follows: when and where are bicyclists most likely to suffer an accident, why does the accident occur, and what causes are behind bicycle accidents at the chosen place of investigation? Five categorisations on the causes of single bicycle accidents were used and these were: operations and maintenance, road design, bicycle interactions, cyclists’ behaviour and conditions, and interaction with other road users.    In addition to the above, a semi-structural qualitative interview was conducted with bicyclists who bicycle in or along the report's area of investigation. The results of this report show that single bicycle accidents in the investigated area have increased between 2010 and 2016, and that many bicyclists are not satisfied with the bicycle infrastructure in Stockholm.

Multidisciplinární péče na hemodialyzačních střediscích. / Multidisciplinary care in hemodialysis centers.

VYHLIDALOVÁ, Mária January 2014 (has links)
It is inconceivable for only one person to take care of ill people in a health care. To achieve the aim which is in particular maintenance of the highest life quality of specimens in health or in disease, is important mutual cooperation of professionals in the branch, where every single ensure care for a patient on the basis of his own knowledge and skills. It is about team co-operation, where every single member of the team has his own obligations, but also rights and authority. The term multisiciplinary care means co-operation of more scientific branches. Hemodialysis patients'nursing care is about team of professionals, who are fully involved in satisfying patients' needs. This co-operation enables primarily the unitary communication, reduction of patient's issue analysis, unified and consecutive nursing care, complete documentation and quality evaluation of provided nursing care of these patients. The aim of the dissertation was to chart multidicsiplinary care's issues at hemodialysis, on the basis of available literature. The dissertation is based on theoretically processed topic by the method of documents' content analysis and method of review and synthesis. Information is obtained from domestic but also foreign science books, scientific magazines, and internet sources. Findings from the 42nd international conference EDTNA/ERCA, which topic was Innovation of renal care through multi-professional leadership, which took place in Malmö, Sweden, from 31st of August to 3rd of September 2013, also contributed. The dissertation is divided into three basic chapters. The first part is focused on team characteristic. There are definitions, types, features, building, composition, roles, conflicts within a team and elemental description of multidisciplinary co-operation. The second chapter deals with a history and hemodialysis as a medical extracorporal method. The third, and the broadest section, is focused on multidisciplinary co-operation at the centre of hemodialysis. It is divided into several sub-chapters. In each of them the information descend from general field to concrete needs of hemodialysed patient and continue to the description of each member of a multidisciplinary team. The result is comprehensive view on provision of multidisciplinary care in the centres of hemodialysis. The output of the dissertation is a draft of the nursing care algorithm within the purview of multidisciplinary care at the centres of hemodialysis. Multidisciplinary care is necessary requirement for assumption of effective, high quality and continuous medical and nursing care at all the centres.

The Correlation between Work and Education in Professional Education: a study of the multidisciplinary residences in health

Raquel Trindade Andrade 16 April 2015 (has links)
This work has as object the multidisciplinary residences in health, a form of vocational trai ning at the level of sensu post-graduation, which is characteri zed according to the relevant laws as in-service training in health facilities. The overall objective of this study turns to analyze how is the epistemological frameworks and ethical-political guiding the multidisciplinary residency in health, i n order to reveal the relationship between theory and practice in this training model under the gaze of residents. In addition to document review, the methodology of empirical research consisted i n analyzi ng the results obtained from the interviews with residents. With twelve residents participating in the National multidisciplinary Residents Health Forum (FNRMS), from different regions of Brazil. The research points to the formation of a theoretical and empirical mosaic in this mode of education that translates into academic character, resulti ng in a fragmentary view of the theory-practice relationship and the gap between academia and health services. Also points out to the existence of pragmatism, revealed by the work in its pedagogical sense, the logic of learni ng by doing, characteristic of such traini ng. We believe, fi nally, that the residence assumes characteristics of alienated labor with peculiarities of the current context of health policy and that the central issue is the absence of the sense of praxis in the programs they are part of the interviewed residents
