The Sound of Politics: An Examination of Political Orientations and Musical Preferences Among College Aged Adults

Stringer, Omari 01 January 2017 (has links)
Music fits in a larger media culture that can influence the thoughts and beliefs of many people. Specifically, there is an interest in the relationship between music and any influences it may have on political views or orientations. Based on the existing literature, it is hypothesized that there will be a significant correlation between political orientations and involvement in music and political orientations with music genre preferences. It is also hypothesized that there will be a relationship between socioeconomic status and music preferences. Furthermore, it is expected that participants will report a high level of music involvement, considering how accessible music is to many students (Agbo-Quaye & Robertson, 2010; RIAA, 2016). Results indicate that there is a correlation between political orientation and several genres, in addition to demographic variables. Participants reported a high level of music involvement and high usage of music streaming services. Additional analysis indicates that two of the top five genres participants listened to (alternative and religious music) can be a significant predictor of political orientation.

Moral homelands : localism and the nation in Kabylia (Algeria)

Maas, Lucy Gabrielle January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a study of attitudes to regional and national identity in Kabylia, a Berber-speaking region in northeast Algeria, and among Kabyle migrants in Paris. I illustrate how Kabyles nurture a fragile balance of nationalism and regional particularism through a primarily moral notion of local community, and extend it to an alternative vision for an Algerian nation which they believe has been debased by a corrupt state regime and Arabo-Islamic ideology since national independence. The thesis is based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork divided between two places – Paris and a large village in Kabylia – and reflects my interest in how people ‘imagine’ national community through their experience as members of smaller social groups. Many Kabyle activists today formulate an alternative vision of Algerian national politics as a federation of several regionally based affective communities, each maintaining internal solidarity. This echoes a tendency in French colonial writings on Kabylia, discussed in the opening chapter, to conceive of the region as an island, intensively connected yet defensive of its autonomy. As citizens of the existing Algerian state, many Kabyles contest assimilation by claiming to represent Algeria’s ‘true past’, and investing contemporary governance initiatives with its values. They represent the radical difference that this implies with metaphors of the Kabyle community as a family within ‘public’ national life, and accuse the state regime of reversing this relationship by adopting a language of coercive authority appropriate only within the family. The transmission of Kabyle values today relies heavily on music, and especially political song, which I demonstrate – beyond its role in disseminating dissident ideas – acts as a vehicle for a type of secular revealed knowledge widely seen as the purest embodiment of Kabyle morality. Beyond the hollow rhetoric of Western liberalism that some see in Kabyle activism, I set out to demonstrate that the particular narrative of identity that I examine, in stressing regional uniqueness at the expense of recognition from a centralized state, also reflects anomalies inherent in the concept of ‘nationalism’ itself as a compromise between the requirements of external co-operation and internal allegiance.

"Le musicien de la liberté." Le réception de Béla Bartók en Italie (1900-1955) / "The Musician of Freedom." Béla Bartók's Reception in Twentieth-Century Italian Culture

Palazzetti, Nicolo' 01 September 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the reception of Béla Bartók’s music and figure in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. From a musicological standpoint, the analysis of Bartók’s influence on the works of several Italian composers (from Alfredo Casella to Bruno Maderna) invites us to reconsider the evolution of artistic modernism in Italy, as well as the foundations of Bartók’s poetics – which is informed by Hungarian nationalism, the “purity” of peasant folklore, and the utopia of “night music”. Furthermore, the study of the forms of transmission and criticism of one of the canonical composers of the last century raises broader issues concerning cultural history, such as: the continuity between artistic modernism and totalitarianism, the forms and meanings of cultural resistance, the relation between music and diplomacy, and the construction of the antifascist myth of Bartók.This thesis argues that the Bartókian Wave, which emerged in Italy during the early Cold War period, was the result of the fusion between the Bartók myth – i.e. the “musician of freedom” celebrated by the critic Massimo Mila – and the myth of national regeneration: a fusion that had its origins in the soundscape of Fascist dictatorship and the Resistenza.

Luz e sombra: música e política na trajetória de Manoel Joaquim de Macedo (1845-1925) / Light and shadow: music and politics in Manoel Joaquim de Macedo (1845--1925).

Fresca, Camila Ventura 03 June 2014 (has links)
Through a literature review, it tries to understand how the consecrated biography of the musician was formed. On the other hand, it deconstructs this biography from recent research and unpublished data, proposing a new biographical approach. Manoel Joaquim de Macedo is inserted in its social and political context to better understand how he acted as musician and what were his ambitions. Thus, this work examines the medium in which he began in music; the Franco--Belgian violin school tradition, in which he would have formed; the musical ambient of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; and the political and ideological issues surrounding the creation of the opera Tiradentes, his great professional project of the maturity.

Influences étrangères dans la musique contemporaine des compositeurs chinois exerçant ou ayant exercé en France et en Amérique du Nord / Foreign influences found in the contemporary music of Chinese composers performing or having performed in France and in North America

Zhao, Bai 05 December 2017 (has links)
As of the 19th century up to now, Chinese music has been taking a new direction and has developed in the wake of social evolutions. In China, the musical creation was affected by both the various cultures and political changes, thus bestowing a special charm on contemporary Chinese music. From the beginning of Western imitation and just before the founding of the new China, Chinese musicians succeeded in matching the Chinese musical elements with the new musical languages. Throughout specific periods, art had been bound to political power, and traditional style constituted the main identity of musical creation. Following the Cultural Revolution, the return to the root culture, the implementation of diversified experimental techniques have resulted in the departure of Chinese composers abroad in search of their own creative way. Contemporary Chinese music developed from Western technique and progressed in the Chinese cultural context and its multiple roots, closed thoughts and childhood experiences in the pure cultural environment and the collision of the new environment is now creating fascinating works of art, remarkably different from Western contemporary music. During the last 30 years of economic development and political openness, Chinese society has become increasingly internationalized; the new technologies and the varied profiles of composers have prompted the new generation to set up outstanding specific musical innovations.

Compositeurs français à l’heure allemande (1940-1944) : le cas de Marcel Delannoy / French Composers During the Occupation (1940-1944) : The case of Marcel Delannoy

Quesney, Cécile 21 May 2014 (has links)
Although the French musical life during the Occupation is now a familiar field of research, no detailed study has been made of Marcel Delannoy (1898-1962), one of the most important composers of the period. Supported by a wide range of sources, including the large collection of Delannoy’s papers conserved at the BnF, the present work aims to fill this gap by situating Delannoy in the larger context of a generation of musicians that were especially visible during the Vichy years. In this context, both coercive and favorable to musical creation, several composers (notably Poulenc and Honegger) were indeed involved in a number of activities that reveal their commitments and the degree of adaptation in the face of the Occupation. To account for Delannoy’s activities under Vichy, it was necessary to extend the period under study: his principal project and success of the period, Ginevra (an opera premiered in 1942 at the Opéra-Comique), was the result of a 1938 State commission; more generally, his musical and extra-musical choices, much like those of his contemporaries, cannot be understood if they are restricted to the four years of the Occupation.

Les formes d’appropriation dans la musique savante chilienne, XXe-XXIe siècles : transfert culturel, acculturation, métissage / Forms of appropriation in the Chilean concert music, 20th-21st centuries : cultural transference, acculturation, hybridization

Gómez Gálvez, Mauricio 27 November 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the study of four contemporary Chilean composers from the second half of the 20th century and beginning of 21st century who developed their careers in the ‘euro-latin-american’ space (Cirilo Vila, Sergio Ortega, Patricio Wang, and Andrés González), and whose generational intersections allow to cover half a century of music. The first part of the thesis presents a brief panorama of Chilean concert music, from the independence of the country at the beginning of the 19th century until our days. The survey emphasizes the process of institutionalization of the musical life, as well as the implicit or explicit discurses, which are presented regarding the national cultural identity in relation to music. The second part analyzes in detail, through a biographical approach, the transnational trajectories of the four composers under study. The aim is to understand, among other aspects, how the processes of cultural change work at the level of a given artistic life. The third part, attempts to elucidate 1. the specificity of Chilean musicians through a multifactorial approach, presenting a series of studies towards analyzing the role of cultural transmitter performed by Chilean composers (within their double function as pedagogues and translators of exogenous languages); 2. the impact of the international circulation and the globalization on their works; 3. the links between music and politics as well as the links between high and popular art; 4. the role of France and Europe in the processes of acculturation; 5. the results of cultural hybridization (through concrete cases), and finally, 6. a typology of the ways of sonic appropriation.
