Kontroversialiteit as tematiese lokmotief in Barrie Hough se My kat word herfs, Droomwa, Vlerkdans en Skilpoppe.

Venter, Sanet 07 December 2007 (has links)
This dissertation explores controversial themes in the youth literature of Barrie Hough. The novels under discussion are My kat word herfs (1986), Droomwa (1990), Vlerkdans (1992) and Skilpoppe (1998). My kat word herfs was translated as My cat turns Autumn, Droomwa as Dream Chariot and Vlerkdans as In full Flight. Afrikaans youth novels historically centered around naive themes such as the idyllic life on the farm or at boarding school. However, young people found it increasingly difficult to identify with these naive storylines and during the nineteen eighties and nineties the Afrikaans youth novel experienced a renewal. Barrie Hough was one of the pioneers, writing about controversial issues like aids, homosexuality, teenage sex, suicide, drug abuse, divorce and single parenthood. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the liberation of Afrikaans youth literature and the role that controversial themes play in this regard. These themes enable the reader to identify with the story and serve as an allurement to draw the reader into the world of the text. Furthermore, the writer is given the opportunity to experience a sense of liberation while he narratively confronts events of his past. This liberation process allows the writer to deal and come to terms with his own past. At the end of each novel both the reader and writer go through a process of purification and liberation, facilitated by the therapeutic process of writing or reading a story. / Dr. M.P. Beukes

Gender in Equestria: An Examination of Reconstituted Forms of Masculinity and Their Consequences for Gender Relations in the Brony Community

Zachary D Palmer (6589841) 15 May 2019 (has links)
<p>In this dissertation, I analyze the Brony community to better understand reconstituted forms of masculinity. Specifically, I focus on the following questions: What does it mean when men incorporate what has traditionally been viewed as stigmatized or feminine into their gender presentations? How do these forms of masculinity represent a challenge to gender politics and how do they reinforce gender inequality? How do women navigate spaces defined by reconstituted forms of masculinity? In what ways do women within these spaces both challenge and maintain power relations? I address these questions through an analysis of interviews with 43 men and women who are fans of <i>My Little Pony </i>and ethnographic observations at four <i>My Little Pony </i>fan conventions. In doing so, this dissertation nuances and extends the literature on reconstituted forms of masculinity, including hybrid masculinities. </p>

Shoegaze : En studie av karaktäristiska drag, ideal och autenticitet i genren shoegaze

Svensson, Simon January 2022 (has links)
Shoegaze reached its peak of popularity in the early 1990s and then abruptly disappeared from the limelight and was outcompeted by other indie rock disciplines such as Britpop and grunge. Although the shoegazer movement was for a relatively short period, the genre has played a significant role in related genres. But what is shoegaze exactly? Why did the uninterested stare down at their shoes? Why does the movement have an influential role? The purpose of the essay is to identify characteristic features of shoegaze. The goal is to increase the understanding of what is characteristic of the genre and how it affects the soundscape, style and values. Existing terms to put into words what shoegaze is usually a personal and authentic expression. How does the genre relate to ideals and authenticity? The aim is to place shoegaze based on ideals and authenticity and how the sound image differs with a focus on My Bloody Valentine and their album Loveless in comparison to other related genres such as punk, post-punk, noise rock, dream pop, Britpop and grunge. It is tested via a music analysis of My Bloody Valentine's song “To Here Knows When” to test the survey results with a genre-defining music example. The starting point of the essay is to start broadly and then dive deeper and deeper until only a specific song is analyzed. The survey begins with gaining knowledge about ideals and attitudes towards authenticity in indie rock. Once identified, the text narrows and focuses on the indie rock subgenre shoegaze. The aim is to identify characteristic features within that genre, so after that chapter, the essay delves deep into the next part, which is a musical analysis of My Bloody Valentine's song "To Here Knows When" from 1991.

Children with Intellectual Disabilities and Their Perceived Participation in Everyday Life Activities : A descriptive study conducted in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia / Barn med intellektuella funktionsnedsättningar och deras upplevda delaktighet i dagliga aktiviteter : En deskriptiv studie genomförd i Addis Ababa, Etiopien

Abrahamsson, Sara, Palmberg, Hampus January 2016 (has links)
Background: Children with intellectual disabilities living in developing countries are vulnerable to participation restrictions. Few studies have been made regarding their own perspectives. Aim: To describe how children in a low income country aged 13-17 with an intellectual disability perceive their participation in everyday life activities. Method: This bachelor thesis was conducted as a descriptive study and had a quantitative approach. Participants were collected through a non-probability, goal-oriented consecutive sampling. Data were collected by using “Picture my Participation”, an instrument designed as a structured interview with quantitative questions. The data were analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 21. Tables and diagrams were made in Microsoft Excel 2013. Result: The activity that the children participated in most frequently was “Daily routines at home for personal care (dressing, choosing clothing, hair care, brushing teeth)”. The activity that most children prioritized as most important, and they were most involved in was “Organised leisure activities”. “Services and policies” and “Social environment” were the factors seen as “Facilitators” to participation, whereas “Family attitudes” was seen as a “Barrier” to participation. Conclusion: The children perceived their participation in the prioritized activities as high and experienced few barriers in the context of participation. Data analyserades i IBM SPSS Statistics 21. Tabeller samt diagram gjordes i Microsoft Excel 2013. Resultat: Aktiviteten som barnen deltog mest frekvent i var “Daily routines at home for personal care (dressing, choosing clothing, hair care, brushing teeth)”.

Children with intellectual disabilities’ perceptions of their participation in activities in everyday life – a pilot study : A minor field study conducted in Ethiopia / Barn med intellektuella funktionsnedsättningars uppfattning av sin delaktighet i vardagliga aktiviteter – en pilotstudie : En mindre fältstudie genomförd i Etiopien

Berger, Sarah, Andersson, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
Background: Children with disabilities living in low and middle income countries’ perceptions of participation are not shown in research. These perceptions are important for providing appropriate interventions. Aim: To describe how children aged 8-12 with an intellectual disability living in Ethiopia perceive their situation regarding participation in activities in everyday life. Method: A descriptive design with a quantitative approach was used. The sample was gathered using consecutive sampling. Fifteen structured interviews were conducted, using “Picture my participation,” an instrument under development. Analyses were made using SPSS Statistics and Microsoft Excel. Results: The children perceived that they participated in activities in everyday life. There was a broad variation in the activities the children prioritized as most important. On a group level, they were very involved in these activities. The majority did not experience any barriers to perform these activities. Conclusions: The perceptions of the majority of the children were that they were involved in daily activities. They did not experience any barriers to participation. The results should be read with caution and generalization is not possible, due to the sample characteristics and that the instrument is under development.
