Occupational Attainment of immigrants : The case of Sweden

Hu, Di, Xin, Yuxiang January 2014 (has links)
Immigrants have become a big part in host country’s daily life. Pervious research study immigrants usually focus on the factors that influence the earnings of immigrants. In contrast, this paper analyzes occupational attainment of immigrants and compares occupational attainment between immigrants and natives. In general, the same as natives, nearly half of immigrants are employed in low-skilled occupations, which cover upper secondary education and tertiary level of no more than 2 years in length. However, immigrants have the less probability of being in skilled and high-skilled occupations than natives. For immigrants from western countries, their occupational attainment are similar to natives, that is, high-skilled occupations accounts for a higher proportion and they are less likely to be engaged in unskilled occupations comparing with immigrants from Africa and Asia and South America.

The tech-savvy generation? Students’ experience with computer technology at the University of Tennessee.

Haboeck, Almut 01 May 2011 (has links)
This study analyzes the technology experience and knowledge of students of the generation of digital natives at the University of Tennessee. In an online survey students were asked about their experience and knowledge of certain software applications, their daily computer habits and their ability and skills to troubleshoot a malfunctioning computer. In general, the results show that students’ computer experience and knowledge are limited to a specific set of software applications that is widened according to required needs. Students are knowledgeable in web browsing, using word processors, course management software and email. If academic courses require them, students learn how to use other software applications, such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. At the same time a majority of students show a limited set of troubleshooting skills. A high percentage would still be able to resolve virus or spyware issues, but if it came to troubleshooting other problems, such as a malfunctioning network connection or a computer that doesn’t boot, they would consult an expert right away without attempting to resolve the issue themselves. Though the majority of students did not wish for more computer integration in their courses, they wished that their education of computer skills in high school had prepared them better for college. At the same time students show a lack of interest in computer workshops, which could improve these skills. They are rather interested in learning computer skills for their personal use, such as Adobe Photoshop or web design.

A matter of trust : A quantitative study dissecting individual predictors of trust, and one’s country of origin within a Swedish context

Schmidt, Viktor January 2017 (has links)
This thesis acts as an initial attempt to investigate how the relationship between one’s generational belonging, educational level, gender and membership in a variety of organizations on the matter of vertical and horizontal trust vary with one’s primary country of origin. Building on data from Riks-SOM 2014, it is shown that one’s primary country of origin not seem to have a unique effect on several of our selected variables on trust. Despite some variation amongst the variables, the results provide a picture of what in previous literature has been described as prosperous traits for the accumulation of trust amongst individuals still are of relevance within in the contemporary Swedish society. The primary focus is thus to be found at a micro-level. Also, the results show that the effect of one’s primary country of origin on our predictor variables is weaker than initially expected, leading to the rejection of some of our hypotheses. This does not indicate the absence of a trust-gap amongst Swedish citizens, as some results provide strength to such claims. However, the central point this thesis wishes to bring forth concerns that contemporary policy-makers should put its focus on promoting the importance of education post-high school level, and membership in certain organizations if the aim is to increase and promote trust for all within our contemporary Swedish society, as the logistic regression analyses here presented tells us a story of that such traits are beneficial for the accumulation of trust.

Exigência proteica e respostas metabólicas de juvenis de piapara (Megaleporinus obtusidens)

Almeida, Viviane do Nascimento Santana de January 2019 (has links)
For this, 300 juveniles (24 ± 1.26 g) were distributed in 20 boxes of 130 L, totaling 15 fish / box. Five diets were formulated isoenergetic and with increasing levels of digestible protein (21, 24, 27, 30 and 33% PD). After 77 days of feeding, the fish biometry was performed to evaluate the parameters of productive performance and the physiological indicators: concentration of metabolites in the blood (serum ammonia and triglycerides), somatic relations, liver enzymatic activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity and lipogenesis, malic enzyme and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH). Every 7 days, the concentration of total ammonia, pH, electrical conductivity and oxygen concentration dissolved in the water of the boxes were determined. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 5 treatments and 3 replicates. The results of productive performance were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and polynomial regression. In the final weight, specific growth rate, weight gain and feed conversion was observed linear effect (p<0,05) and in consumption there was no significant effect (p>0,05). At the concentration of ammonia in the water, a significant difference (p <0.05) was observed with a linear effect. In the serum triglycerides co... Factors Contributing to Substance Abuse Treatment Completion Among Alaska Natives

Donovan, Courtney Kay 01 January 2018 (has links)
Alaska Native populations have experienced significant struggles with addictions to alcohol and other substances. The Alaska Native population's access to treatment services is riddled with problems. This quantitative study served the purpose of identifying factors that lead to the prediction of successful treatment discharges among Alaska Native clients who received treatment for substance abuse at a treatment center in Alaska. Based on the theoretical framework of Marlatt's relapse prevention theory, using archival data, as well as a cross-sectional, quantitative research design, predictive variables of the efficacy of substance use treatment among outpatient clients (N = 278) were examined. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess whether adverse experiences, depression levels, social support, substance abuse, and sociocultural variables such as ethnicity, age, gender, mandatory/voluntary treatment enrollment predicted successful discharge in outpatient treatment. Results indicated that only gender was significantly connected to treatment outcomes. Women were more likely than men to successfully complete the treatment program. Several limitations could explain these results including the use of instruments that were not empirically validated, the use of self-report measures, and the quality of the assessment process. Results of this study could be used to focus on understanding and developing specific treatment modalities for men with substance abuse problems. Future studies should use empirically validated measures and a precise program of research.

What’s on your mind? Understanding the Influence of Social Media on Authentic Leadership Dimensions and Education from the Millennials’ Perspective

Bertoncini, Guia Tina, Schmalz, Maria Teresa January 2013 (has links)
Social media has paved a new way for communication and interacting with others. ’What’s on your mind?’, ’How are you feeling today?’, ’Where are you?’, ’Who are you with?’. These allusions lead back to status update questions of the largest social network to date. This thesis seeks to primarily understand, to which extent and if, social media usage influences authentic leadership dimensions and education from the millennials’ perpective. Additionally, it portrays results of an online based questionnaire conducted among students and alumni within the millennial generation.

Computer Literacy Skills of Net Generation Learners

Duke, Christopher 2011 May 1900 (has links)
Younger learners are widely considered to be technologically savvy and computer literate because of their lifelong exposure to ubiquitous technology. Educators often rely on that assumption to justify changes to institutional curricula, technology initiatives, new classroom strategies, and calls for educators to meet the educational demands of the younger generation. This study examines the computer literacy skills of Net Generation Learners (NGLs). This dissertation is composed of a systematic literature review, an examination of learner computer literacy skills prior to completing a college level course, and an investigation of the effects of different types of instruction on learner computer literacy skills. In the systematic literature review, identified studies focused primarily on learner familiarity with emerging technologies and relied heavily on self-reported data. Few studies directly measured learner computer literacy skills, and none compared the skills of NGLs and non-NGLs. A causal-comparative examination of learner computer literacy skills prior to a college level computer literacy course found that both NGLs and non-NGLs exhibited inadequate computer literacy skill. A 1-way ANOVA indicated NGLs performed significantly better than non-NGLs on a computer literacy skills assessment; however, examining learner age as a continuous variable via regression yielded different results. There may be validity to claims regarding the comparative computer proficiency of NGLs to non-NGLs, but the level of skill exhibited by learners does not warrant calls for radical educational changes, and the imprecision of arbitrarily defining age as a dichotomous variable produces potentially erroneous results. The effect of type of instruction on learner computer literacy skills was explored. Based on the results in this study, direct instruction focused on a comprehensive scope of computer literacy skills better supports learner acquisition of skills than does informal instruction or instruction focused on a limited range of skills. Future research should use statistical methods that analyze age as a continuous variable while continuing to examine directly the comparative computer literacy skills of NGLs and non-NGLs at all levels of education. Further inquiry into the effectiveness of different types of instruction to support learner acquisition of computer literacy skills should also be conducted.
