Guidelines for an effective staff induction programme at a special school in Gauteng : a case study

Kempen, Maria Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
This case study explores the experiences of eight newly appointed teachers at a school for intellectually disabled learners. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to interpret interview data. The literature study investigates the phenomenon of staff turnover and includes key literature themes such as adult learning theories of Senge and Vygotski, the life cycle of a teacher, the special school context and problems and needs experienced by beginning teachers. The key findings of the research were that beginning special education teachers experienced various problems and needs but that, with well planned structured support, these problems could successfully be overcome. The researcher has developed a set of guidelines, which could be used in developing a staff induction programme, aimed at raising the effectiveness of newly appointed teachers at a school for intellectually disabled learners. This research once again emphasizes the need for a well planned, structured induction programme. / Further Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Murimba, Lynnette 01 1900 (has links)
The study examined the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents infected with HIV and AIDS. This was a qualitative study that involved semi-structured interviews and observation. The sampling method used was purposive and it entailed 10 adolescents (4 boys and 6 girls) who are living with HIV at Chiedza Child Care Centre in Zimbabwe. This study revealed that adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health needs are the desire to have sex, desire to have children, the need for prevention of unwanted pregnancy and care and treatment support. However, their knowledge of HIV and AIDS was inadequate. Adolescents also revealed their lack of proper information regarding their health care and treatment needs. However, adolescents illustrated an adequate knowledge of the services available for them for their health, treatment and care needs. The study recommended that there is need to strengthen the provision of information and services on adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health issues. The study also recommended that counsellors should improve their counselling skills so that they can empower adolescents living with HIV to be able to negotiate condom usage, matters of dating and handling relationships.

Βαλμάς, Θεοφάνης 21 January 2008 (has links)
The study aimed to analyze the training needs of newly appointed primary teachers. After defining and recording the daily problems that schoolteachers face in their work, we tried to impose their personal needs for in-service training by dividing them into two categories: conscious and explicit ones and in conscious and not explicit ones. The next step was to examine the grade to which the program of introductive in-service training which, the newly appointed primary teachers are obliged to follow, covered their training needs and gave solution to some of the existing problems. In order to investigate the above-mentioned subjects, we applied the theory of social systems. As a research tool in our study we used the questionnaire. Quantitative as well as qualitative content analysis, have been used in order to analyze data. The study showed multiple problems, and indicated the great need for future training. Finally, the introductive training program did not correspond to the problems and the needs that the newly appointed primary teachers faced

An assessment of needs of the mentally retarded in the community of district 22 (sub-district 222) KwaZulu-Natal

Webster, Joyce 30 November 2003 (has links)
The system of care for persons suffering from mental retardation is in a state of upheaval. Considering the mentally handicapped as holistic beings, this study explored and assessed the needs of those residing in the community of District 22 (sub-district 222), KwaZulu-Natal, thus facilitating the planning of care and care facilities for these individuals to enable them to function optimally in the community. To accomplish this purpose, specific objectives were formulated. A quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory was carried out, using 167 respondents. The study revealed that despite being mentally retarded, they were still regarded as valuable members of the community, their needs did not differ from the needs of others in the rest of the world and that mental retardation is still rated low in the prioritization of health problems, hence the lack of resources and support needed for the rehabilitation of such persons. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)
