SERVICE PROVIDERS PERSPECTIVE ON THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF SEXUALLY EXPLOITED WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE INLAND EMPIRE

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore and expose the needs of sexually exploited women and children. The participants were recruited from a few non-profit agencies in the Inland Empire area. This study found one of the most underlying challenge facing the participants when working with sexually exploited victims was the unavailability of resources, particularly, shortage of transitional housing for them. Another finding that featured prominently in the study was related to a need for continuous training and education for the service providers in order to stay current with trends. The study also identified the rapport building challenges faced by service providers and the risk of re-traumatization for these victims and proper types of treatment for these individuals. This study recommends that the policymakers work with other key stakeholders to provide resources to these service providers in addition to providing a favorable environment. The collaboration should also include the law enforcement agencies and the judicial officers to protect the victims from further suffering. Furthermore, the study suggests that attention should be placed on the development of awareness campaigns and stronger voices of support and advocacy for these victims.

NEGOTIATING STRATEGIES: AN EFFECTIVE WAY FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES TO COMMUNICATE FOR SERVICES

The purpose of this project was to examine and explore negotiating strategies for parents with children with disabilities. The research showed there were insufficient materials for teaching negotiating strategies to parents to assist them in obtaining critical or basic services for their special needs children. Many families lack financial resources, have English-language barriers, and have educational challenges when facing school administrators that possess these vital resources. These circumstances mean that parents may feel intimidated and disempowered when meeting with school officials. By providing a simple and easy-to-use guide of Negotiating Strategies, parents can be empowered and encouraged to use their skills for negotiation, conflict management, power, networking and mediation during an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting. The guide will increase awareness and understanding for parents when participating with school administrators, allowing them to capitalize on their rights for seeking appropriate and needed services for their children with disabilities.

WHAT CRUCIAL COMPONENTS SHOULD BE INTEGRATED INTO BEREAVEMENT PROGRAMS FOR THE LATINO POPULATION?

The purpose of the study is to provide an understanding of the emotional and cultural needs Latinos experience when grieving the loss of a loved one. Current research shows that the Latino community is less likely to seek mental health treatment including end of life and bereavement services. This study uses a qualitative approach examining participant’s experiences during the bereaved phase focusing on emotional needs. The study reveals that Latinos experience emotional distress during bereavement and grief. It also identifies a scarcity of programs designed to meet the needs of the bereaved of Latino communities in the Inland Empire where this study takes place. The study explores different barriers that prevent Latinos from accessing and utilizing bereavement services among Latino communities, social work professionals, and organizations focusing on emotional and mental health. The study reveals that Latinos have a need for culturally sensitive programs to help them process feelings of grief and loss; language, values, and traditions are identified as main cultural characteristics including family and religion. The study identifies support groups, counseling, home visits, and phone calls as the top bereavement services needed in Latino communities as well as professionals who can understand their cultural needs.

Uses, challenges and training needs regarding business skills for fashion entrepreneurs in the Emfuleni Local Municipality

Fashion entrepreneurs with no formal fashion-related education or training are hereafter referred to by the acronym FEWFFET (fashion entrepreneurs without formal fashion-related education or training). Entrepreneurship provides a feasible means of employment in a country where national unemployment rates are alarmingly high. To succeed, entrepreneurs require business knowledge and skill to operate profitable and sustainable businesses. However, entrepreneurs who were previously disadvantaged often possess only low levels of education, limited qualifications and training. This applies to survivalist fashion entrepreneurs in the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) who produce various items of apparel and clothing. Over a third of these entrepreneurs are not formally educated in business management and may not possess the adequate knowledge to operate their fashion business successfully. The research aim was to investigate the uses and challenges pertaining to business skills amongst FEWFFET to determine their business skills training needs. The sample population included 105 black fashion entrepreneurs, operating micro, survivalist enterprises within peri-urban, resource-poor communities in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) of Sedibeng, Gauteng. A quantitative study using non-probability purposive sampling and snowball sampling was performed. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were conducted with respondents at fabric and haberdashery stores or within their home-business environments. The results indicated that respondents lacked business plan development skills and showed only moderate skills in finance and marketing. Respondents indicated business skills training needs for developing a business plan, conducting basic bookkeeping, determining correct product pricing, drafting quotations and invoices, developing a budget, conducting basic market research and advertising their products and services / National Research Foundation (NRF)

Chronic Low Back Pain- A Needs Assessment for Practice Change

There is a practice gap in the self-management education of patients with chronic low back pain. Insufficient self-management leads to increased frequency of flare-ups of low back pain, disability, loss of productivity, and increased cost of health care. The guiding practice-focused question was focused on the unmet self-management support needs of the chronic low back pain patients in a Midwestern state local pain clinic. The purpose of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to ascertain the unmet needs of patients' self-management support by analyzing the results of a patient study performed by this clinic. The theoretical principles of the model for evidence-based practice change, the chronic care model, and the middle-range theory of self-care of chronic illness were used. The evidence included the analysis of the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care Survey (PACIC) data from 100 patients treated in this pain clinic. The clinic used the PACIC questionnaire to collect data from its 100 chronic low back pain patients, selected by simple random sampling method. The average weighted scores of these patients' responses were below the norm on all PACIC subscales and summary scores. According to study results, this pain clinic did not meet the self-management support needs of its chronic low back pain patients. Evidence-based recommendations were made for the improvement in the medical model of patient care by including nurse-led patient education and support. The positive social change is the improvement in the health status of this growing health population by meeting their identified education and support needs. Positive results from this nurse-led intervention could lead to the dissemination and widespread implementation of these recommendations in other pain clinics.

Weight Management of Women of Childbearing Age

Black River Memorial Hospital identified obesity as a priority health concern in its rural service area; this concern was in line with the county's needs assessment. It was identified that women of childbearing age affect the lifestyle and health choices of their families and that they are at higher risk for the additional health risks associated with obesity affecting pregnancy and birth. Despite the identification of these risk factors, the factors that affect healthy weight management have not been well understood. Using the life course theory, a qualitative inquiry in the form of a structured interview was developed with local community experts and stakeholders. Sixteen women, aged 18-44, were recruited from the area Women Infant Children (WIC) program, the local food pantry, and area businesses. Audio-taped interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using open and axial coding. The findings suggest that the health literacy among this sample of women was low with regards to healthy weight (BMI) and the risks posed by obesity. The most cited barriers to healthy nutrition were the cost of healthy food, food preferences, and the time to prepare healthy food. The most cited barriers to healthy activity were lack of motivation, lack of child care and lack of fun, affordable activities, and severe weather. The most common motivators for pursuing a healthy lifestyle were identified as the respondents' children, the encouragement of significant others and friends, and the participation of the family in healthy lifestyle choices. Based on the literature review, knowledge of community resources, and these findings, broad recommendations to enhance the culture of healthy weight management were provided to local community stakeholders to facilitate community planning for a healthier population.

The Lived Experiences of Male Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of male victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Few studies exist about the experiences of men who are victims of female-perpetrated IPV and there are not many studies about these men's experiences in seeking and receiving psychological help. Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Peck's gender role strain paradigm guided this study to understand victimology and perceptions of gender roles. Research questions attempted to understand the lived experiences of male IPV victims of female-perpetrated IPV, accessing supportive and psychological services, and their experiences of these services. Seven male individuals were recruited through flyers in community centers, law enforcement agencies, and social media sites; 5 participants were interviewed via Skype and 2 responded via e-mail. Data from interviews were analyzed and coded following an interpretative phenomenological method. Five themes were identified from 2 research questions including: male victimization is seen as less severe than female victimization, family is not easy to talk to about experience, therapy and hospitalization were used, law enforcement officers are biased, and mental health workers are routine. Findings were evaluated with existing literature and suggestions are made for help-seeking option accessibility for male victims. This study promotes social change by discussing how supporting survivors may decrease negative gender roles and social norms while promoting the betterment of professionals who work with male victims. Victim-centered services, patient-centered approaches, and treatment and support for survivors of IPV will help to improve awareness about male victims in society while offering insight to decrease negative stigma.

An investigation into the alignment of training needs and skills development plan in the office of the premier, Limpopo Province

Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2008 / Aim: Although a lot of money is spent on training in the Office of the Premier, such training programmes are never evaluated to determine the efficacy. Thus it is not clear whether such training improves service delivery or not, and if there is visible improvement, and how much of that improvement was in fact brought about by such training programmes. The aim of the study is to investigate whether employees’ training programmes are aligned with the training needs. Furthermore, the aim is to determine if the compilation of the workplace skills plan is informed by the employees’ skills needs. The National Skills Development Strategy (2005-2010) for the Public Service states that for the public service to succeed in its mandate of providing effective and efficient service delivery to the citizens, the government needs to invest in the training and development of the public service. Participants: A total number of 70 (seventy) officials from the Transversal Human Resources and Corporate Services participated in the study. In addition 7 (seven) managers from these sub branches were interviewed. Instruments: The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. For the qualitative approach, the researcher used structured interviews. The quantitative approach involved a data collection procedure based on structured questionnaires administered to both the Transversal Human Resources and Corporate services. Results: The study revealed that training programmes are not always aligned to the employees’ training needs. Although employees indicated their training needs in specific skills, they received training in skills that they did not require, but yet v identified as crucial. The study confirmed that of the two sub-branches, employees from the Corporate services are the ones who receive more training compared to employees from Transversal Human Resources. Conclusion: The study concludes that the development of the skills plan is partially aligned to the training needs of employees in the Office of the Premier. This conclusion is based on the fact that the respondents’ skills were audited in the past two years whereas the skills development plan is compiled and submitted to Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) every year. This study’s conclusion is based on the findings that, the respondents’ skills were not audited this financial year and that in instances where respondents attended training intervention evaluation was never conducted. However, there is the challenge of ensuring that all employees attend some training at least once per year.

Assessment of information delivery systems used for dissemination of HIV/AIDS information by selected clinics at Ga-Molepo, Capricorn District in the Limpopo Province

Thesis (M.Inf.) --University of Limpopo, 2008 / The aim of the study is to investigate which of the information delivery systems (communication strategies) established at government level are used by rural clinics, and whether such information delivery systems are accessible to rural end-users. A literature review discussing and assessing the use of information delivery systems was conducted. The survey method and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from all Clinics at Ga- Molepo. The study revealed that rural end-users cannot access HIV/AIDS information because clinics use information delivery systems which are not acceptable and accessible to them. Recommendations for further study on the subject under investigation are provided. The study assumes that with the identified barriers and recommendations at their disposal HIV/AIDS campaigners will be in a good position to identify, package and employ information delivery systems which are suitable for end-users.
