Virtual communities for parents of children with special needs in Taiwan : emotional support, information, and advocacy

Lu, I-Jung January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is a case study of three virtual communities for parents of children with special needs in Taiwan. The main focus of this research was on understanding the role that virtual communities play in providing support for parents. This study addressed the following research questions: How do virtual communities provide support for parents of children with special needs in Taiwan? What motivates Taiwanese parents of children with special needs to search for support through virtual communities? How does the support provided through virtual communities impact the relationship between Taiwanese parents of children with special needs and professionals? This thesis constructs an analytical framework that helps in understanding the concept of support in virtual communities for parents of children with special needs. Employing this framework identified three broad types of support: informational support, advocacy, and emotional support. In this study, informational support included parenting skills, advice, and access to services; advocacy referred to articulating needs and rights; and emotional support included solidarity, increased self-esteem, acceptance, and affirmation. All three virtual communities were established by parents; two are managed by parents, and one is managed by a professional. Web-based observations were conducted in each virtual community from November 2014 to December 2015. Semi-structured interviews were held with 14 parents, 7 professionals, and 6 administrators and concentrated on experiences of, and motivations for, seeking and providing support through virtual communities. The analytical framework was used to identify broad themes in the data. A thematic analysis was employed to look across the cases to identify commonalities and differences, and finally, a systematic analysis borrowing from social network analysis was used to map the interactions among the participants. The main findings of this study indicate that information and support related to parenthood and parenting skills was easily accessed through virtual communities. Parents were found to join together to share their experiences of parenting, comfort one another, and advocate for their needs through the virtual communities. The parents occasionally excluded members of the community to ensure that all members shared similar parenting values. In addition, parents are beginning to gain control of knowledge and their relationships with professionals through virtual communities. This paper's main contributions to knowledge are as follows: (1) Virtual communities allow parents to redefine themselves in ways that they believe are publicly acceptable. (2) Parents are using virtual communities to exercise power to renegotiate their identity and obtain resources. (3) Parents are also starting to alter the power relationships between themselves and professionals.

In the first experiment the daily weight gain (DWG) was measured in four animals groups that received goat milk, cow milk, cow milk plus soybean oil and cow milk plus soybean oil and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, the DWG and the weaning age was, respectively, 0,162, 69; 0,161, 72; 0,156, 78 and 0,156, 77. All results were satisfactories and did not differ statistically; but the use of the pure cow milk was the more economic treatment. The second experiment compared the traditional scheme of feeding (1,5 kg milk/day) and the milk offered according the energetic needs of animals (variable amount of milk/day). The DWG did not differ among the treatments (0,140 and 0,156 kg/day) and the weaning was done at 76 and 79 days, respectively. The group that received milk based on energetic demands given an economy of 20 L/animal. From this experiments, is possible to conclude that the goat kids can be raised on pure cow milk and the daily amount of milk can be offered based on its energetic needs.

Confiabilidade entre avaliadores da versão brasileira da escala Camberwell de Avaliação de Necessidades (CAN) / Reliability of the Brazilian version of the Camberwell Assessment of Needs (CAN)

Ana Cristina Belizia Schlithler 06 July 2006 (has links)
People with psychotic disorders usually face changes and limitation in their daily life activities. Their needs are complex and involve different types and levels of care. In several countries, the systematic assessment of needs is considered essential for service planning and to establish treatment goals. However, in Brazil, the assessment of needs is still limited. The Camberwell Assessment of Needs (CAN) assess needs in 22 domains that encompass a wide range of needs of care, as problems with accommodation, food, psychotic symptoms, physical health, and others. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to translate and adapt the CAN for research (CAN-R) and to assess its inter-rater reliability, in a sample of first contact psychosis in São Paulo. METHOD: Subjects were randomly selected from the \'Brazilian First Contact Psychosis Study\' sample. The inclusion criteria were: first contact with health services due to a psychotic episode at the study period; diagnosis of schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders of schizophrenia spectrum, mania or psychotic depression (DSM-IV); age between 18 and 64 years; living in pre-defined areas of São Paulo. Five research assistants carried out the CAN version, adapted and translated into Portuguese by the investigators? group of the incidence study. Afterwards a blind investigator carried out the assessment independently, through tape-records of the interviews. Kappa coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient were used to compare ratings of the independent investigator with ratings of the research assistants group. RESULTS: Fifty-two subjects were included, 27 (52%) of them were women. Most were in 18-39 age group, had studied eight years or less, and had diagnosis of schizophrenia or other schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Inter-rater reliability to 19 (87%) domains was substantial, almost perfect or total as measured by kappa coefficient. Reliability to total of needs measured by ICC was 0.95 (CI 95% 0,90 - 1,00). CONCLUSIONS: The Can showed good applicability and reliability with first contact psychotic individuals. The use of standardized instruments as the CAN in mental health services in Brazil, can contribute to the assessment of effectiveness of interventions, and individualized care to people with mental disorders.

The educational needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in UK in one local authority in England : professional and child perspectives

Morgan, Aimee Louise January 2018 (has links)
This two-part small-scale research is positioned within a social constructionist interpretive epistemology. Both parts of the research used qualitative methods. Part One explores the perspectives of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) in relation to their educational experiences in the UK. It also considers the experiences, opportunities and challenges for school and college staff with supporting the educational needs of UASC in a shire county in England. The methodology employed to collect the data for Part One consisted of semi-structured interviews with six professionals and the ‘Talking Stones’ (Wearmouth, 2004) interview technique with six UASC. For Part Two of the research, a Collaborative Action Research (CAR) approach was used consisting of one cycle of three group supervision sessions with five professionals from Part One. Within the group supervision sessions, a Solution Circles framework was implemented and participants were encouraged to prepare cases to discuss and collaboratively problem solve. The benefits to supporting the needs of UASC by introducing professionals to the process of group supervision are also explored. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) interpretation of Thematic Analysis was employed across both phases as a method of data analysis. This enabled themes to be identified which emerged from the data. Two key findings were discovered to play a significant role in the UASC’s social and emotional wellbeing: the uncertainty of the UASC’s future in relation to their unresolved asylum status and their acquisition and fluency of English language. The latter is discussed in relation to how fully the students felt able to integrate and communicate their needs. Barriers to language also link closely to students accessing the curriculum and their experience of inclusion within the setting. An array of opportunities and challenges of supporting the social and emotional needs of UASC are outlined by school and college staff. Such findings include: recognising and identifying the social and emotional needs of UASC, a lack of experience and opportunities for staff training, challenges with inclusion and integration of UASC within the educational settings, funding and available resources, developing supportive and trusting relationships over time and forming social connections. Within the paper, these findings are explored in relation to Bronfenbrenner’s (1979; 1989) Ecological Systems Theory. Implications for educational professionals and for educational psychology practitioners are discussed.
