Reliable Network Communication

Gustavsson, Anna January 2019 (has links)
The Target Positioning Sensor (TPS) is used by cranes to locate containers in ports and on cargo ships. The reliability of the communication network between the TPS and the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is important to optimise the productivity of the container terminal. Lost data messages between the network devices will lead to delays and production loss for the terminal. The main goal of this thesis project is to make the Ethernet-based network between the TPS and the PLC more reliable. The current sensor network protocol uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and the project aims to replace that with the Transport Control Protocol (TCP). This includes designing a new message handling application and performing case studies on how to best handle compatibility issues between the TPS and the PLC, to improve the longevity of the application. The case studies led to considering an adaptable behaviour toward future software updates in different parts of the network. An application which used TCP to communicate between a PC and a PLC was developed, intended to be used as a reference during future integration into the actual sensor network. The TCP application works but needs to be improved before being implemented in a real system. In addition, the project also looked into Time-Sensitive Networking, which is a method of increasing link capacity and reliability in time-sensitive network implementations. This was done through a literature study on the IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking Standard, which showed that the application of the standard could be beneficial if more sensors are added to the network of if the sampling frequency of the TPS is increased.

PONNA, CHAITANYA, CHOWDARY BODEPUDI, RAKESH January 2011 (has links)
The Internet is a collection of computer networks; it is the most important networkingenvironment in the world, it used for information interchanges in virtual network. Wirelesstechnologies, such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX etc, can suggest more suitable and cooler way forinformation interchanges in virtual network. The most well-known ongoing wireless city projects are counting Wireless Philadelphia, GoogleWi-Fi Mountain View, Wireless Taipei City, and San Francisco Tech Connect project. Web haslimits of interactivity and presentation. The Web’s client-server architecture blocks informationexchange. Furthermore, most Web applications are only intended for conservative computers, not for mobile handheld devices. In period of information exchange on the Web, the new Web2.0 is suggested. Web 2.0 refers to a perceived or planned second generation of Internet-basedservices, such as public networking sites, wikis, communication tools, which highlight onlineteamwork and sharing among users.A virtual network or online community is a collection of people that may or may not chiefly ororiginally connect or interact via the Internet. Virtual network have also become an additionalform of communication amid people who know each other in actual life. Today, virtual networkcan be used insecurely for a diversity of social collections interacting via the Internet. It does notunavoidably mean that there is a solid bond between the members. The validation methods like internal validity, external validity and Reliability for this researchand how it affects these methods for our research. We also use interview method has beenconsidered for this research. We will use diagrams, models, prototypes, and texts, to illuminate our result. MOVIMENTOS SOCIAIS EM REDE E A CONTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADES: A MARCHA DAS VADIAS SM E A EXPERIÊNCIA DO FEMINISMO EM REDES COMUNICAÇÃO / NETWORK SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND THE IDENTITIES CONSTRUCTION: THE SLUT WALK- SM AND THE EXPERIENCE OF FEMINISM IN NETWORK COMMUNICATION

Tomazetti, Tainan Pauli 12 January 2015 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / This study aims to investigate the construction process of collective identities in the social movement Slut Walk SM, collective action empirically located in Santa Maria, center of Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil, from network communication dynamics built between the online and offline environments. We start, therefore, the conceptual approach that shapes the contemporary social movements along the processes of communication and information. Taking this premise in mind, we turn to the context of digital networks ubiquity and the Internet communication to reflect its appropriation in the effectuation and coordination of collective actions organization developed nowadays. With emphasis on communication processes, the work is performed from ethnographic experience in a communication research, in particular, from the combination of a field observations between online and offline environments. Thus, from a previous literature review, we define the cultural social movements as the Slut Walk, as analytical constructs developed around actions related to collective identities, oppositions, conflicts and struggle projects. Moreover, with the gender theory we present a brief conceptual framework about the universe of contemporary feminism and its contextual crossings on the ground of communication. Also, with the network society concept, we reflect the particularities of a social context organized through the communication and technological changes, and relate to the current configuration of the network social movements. From this, the research focuses on the interpretation of the research field reaching the settings that constitute the Slut Walk - SM as a social movement anchored by network communication logic through social uses of a Page and a Group of discussion in the social network Facebook. In the end, the study revealed that the communication network integrates the dynamics of identity construction of the Slut Walk under the scope of the differences, of gender policies, and senses about feminism. Senses, that are deliberate from the positions, opinions, debates and conflicts between the subjects in networks and on the streets.

Moreaud, Stéphanie 12 October 2011 (has links)
The emergence of multicore processors led to an increasing complexity inside the modern servers, with many cores, distributed memory banks and multiple Input/Output buses. The execution time of parallel applications depends on the efficiency of the communications between computing tasks. On recent architectures, the communication cost is largely impacted by hardware characteristics such as NUMA or cache effects. In this thesis, we propose to study and optimize high performance communication on hierarchical architectures. We first evaluate the impact of the hardware affinities on data movement, inside servers or across high-speed networks, and for multiple transfer strategies, technologies and platforms. We then propose to consider affinities between hardware and communicating tasks inside the communication libraries to improve performance and ensure their portability. To do so,we suggest to adapt the tasks binding according to the transfer method and thetopology, or to adjust the data transfer strategies to a defined task distribution. Our approaches have been integrated in some main MPI implementations. They significantly reduce the communication costs and improve the overall application performance. These results highlight the importance of considering hardware topology for nowadays servers.

Mätning av skärgradshöjd på stål / Measurement of burr height onsteel

Svensson, Johan January 2016 (has links)
Varje uppgift i programvaran tilldeladesen egen tråd. / Today, a steel roll is cut within the steel industry in a cutting factory, the steel rollsare divided to smaller part bands with poor control of the burr height quality. Samplesis taken manually, the amount of samples is too low to know the quality of thesteel roll, the steel rolls can be divided up to 150 times and the length will be 30 kilometers. A whole resend for one steel roll costs up against a million SEK and has anegative climatic impact. One software prototype for detection of burr heights witha reference line was programmed. The prototype contained one light sensor, two motors,a PC and one prototype construction. Each task in the software was allocatedan own thread. Operating systems, threads and algorithms was performance testedfor measurement of execution times and period times. The result showed that a burrheight detector where possible to implement. The algorithm could detect burrheights that were too large related to its reference line.

Offloading Workloads from CPU of Multiplayer Game Server to FPGA : SmartNIC implementation with UDP Communication / Avlastning av arbetsbelastningar från CPU till FPGA för multiplayer Game Server : SmartNIC-implementering med UDP Kommunikation

Bao, Junwen January 2022 (has links)
For multiplayer games, the performance of the server’s Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main factor that limits the number of players on the server at the same time. Compared with the CPU, the Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architecture has no instructions set and no shared memory. Offloading some tasks from the CPU to the FPGA may help the CPU improve processing efficiency. This thesis explores which tasks on a CPU can be offloaded to a FPGA and how to design such a circuit system. The performance of the developed system also needs to be measured. We decided to offload communication tasks and data processing tasks to an FPGA. The result is that the FPGA server is available for work, the maximum number of users is 80, and the maximum network latency is 30-40 ms. The most important result is that a FPGA can be used as a multi-player server. One of the severe limitations of this design is the number of hardware resources. A 7-series FPGA is divided into several similar clock regions, which means the number of Flip Flop (FF)s near the same clock edge is fixed. If adding more FFs in the same component, the routing delay can not meet the set-up time requirements. Previously, people used the FPGA as the support accelerator to the server CPU. The CPU still works as a paramount communication link with one or several multi-connection parts and connects to the FPGA via the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) to use the FPGA to process data or pack/unpack Ethernet frames. We have designed and implemented a whole multi-connection server in a Hardware Description Language (HDL) and downloaded the resulting hardware in an FPGA.

Hammersberg, Molly, Salmi, Victoria January 2022 (has links)
An identified problem in the fashion industry today is the amount of returns made due to incorrect orders for clothes purchased online. Three reasons for incorrect orders that lead to returns are that consumers can not try on the garments before buying, the product images are misleading, or the size description does not correspond to the actual size. This paper examines whether there is a link between wrong orders and whether consumers can not physically try on the clothes they buy online. Furthermore, this paper investigates whether innovative digital technology can contribute to a solution to the identified problem. The paper was carried out through a mixed research method where information about previous research and new data was collected through literature studies, interviews, and questionnaires. The paper strengthens the initial hypothesis that there is currently very little research on the Metaverse connection, e-commerce, and digital testing. However, the paper shows that consumers and producers are interested in learning more about Metaverse and possibly implementing and using the technology in the future. For this to happen, technology needs to be developed and great financial efforts also need to be made.

Implementation of data flow query language on a handheld device

Evangelista, Mark A. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / Handheld devices have evolved significantly from mere simple organizers to more powerful handheld computers that are capable of network connectivity, giving it the ability to send e-mail, browse the World Wide Web, and query remote databases. However, handheld devices, because of its design philosophy, are limited in terms of size, memory, and processing power compared to desktop computers. This thesis investigates the use of Data Flow Query Language (DFQL) in querying local and remote databases from a handheld device. Creating Standard Query Language (SQL) queries can be a complex undertaking; and trying to create one on a handheld device with a small screen only adds to its complexity. However, by using DFQL, the user can submit queries with an easy to use graphical user interface. Although handheld devices are currently more powerful than earlier PCs, they still require applications with a small footprint, which is a limiting factor for software developed. This thesis will also investigate the best division of labor between handheld device and remote servers. / Sergeant, United States Army
