The “Nigger Trinity”: Engaging the Discourse in Post Civil Rights/Post 1960s America

The cultural and popular media landscape of the United States of America changed after the Civil-Rights movement of the 1960s. The word “Nigger” was changed during that same period of American history. There are several authors and a comic that helped change this word during the 1960s. The post Civil-Rights American has a different experience and understanding with this word than those born before 1970. This work triangulates the current cultural location of the word “Nigger,” “nigga,” and “the n-word” using linguistics, law, and two media case studies. The “Nigger” trinity is a model that adds value to the discourse that surrounds this one word in post civil-rights/post 1960s America.

Uncovering the Range of Intentions and Interpretations Associated with N-Word Usage in American Film by Nneka Logan Under the Direction of Michael Bruner ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of contemporary N-word usage. Key points are that there is more than one N-word in circulation, and that “nigger,” the racial slur, is only one conception of the N-word. A second point is that “nigga” is a separate word with a separate scope of meaning. I also argue that usage of “nigga” is a complex communicative phenomenon that cannot be essentialized in terms of race, socioeconomic status and other social factors. I argue that contemporary N-word usage is not an exclusively black cultural endeavor, but in fact a multiracial phenomenon. To support my assertions I employ communication, race and N-word scholarship, and I apply the scholarship to the text of American film. A study of this kind is significant because increasing numbers of people are being exposed to the N-words in a variety of contexts, but many are unaware of their important semantic differences. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) is probably the greatest and most prolific exponent of purist estheticism in all of American letters. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, his first book of poetry, Harmonium (1923) won him the respect and admiration of his fellow writers, but brought him little popular acclaim and less remuneration. His career as a poet spanned four decades, the 1923 volume being followed by Ideas 2( Order (1935); The Man with the Blue Guitar (1937); Parts of â World (1942); Transport to Symmer (1947); The Auroras gt Autumn (1950); The Necessary Angel (a collection of essa7s, 1951); The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens (1954); and Opus Posthumous (a miscellany of poems, plays, and prose works, edited by Samuel French Morse, 1957). Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Zootecnia, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2014. / ABSTRACT In the current nutrition precision, maximizing the utilization of nutrients is optimized by the use of additives, which are also important for reducing the excretion of compounds potentially pollute the environment, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Thus, we aimed at, with the development of two experiments to assess the performance of juvenile Nile tilapia subjected to extruded feed containing the enzyme complex SSF (solid fermentation station) added at different stages of processing (before and after extrusion) and the development of tambacu juveniles with diets containing different levels of the same enzyme complex. In experiment 1 with tilapia, 140 animals distributed in five treatments (control (no enzyme), 400 ppm SSF enzyme complex in the mixture prior to extrusion (AE400), 800 ppm SSF enzyme complex in the mixture prior to extrusion (AE800 were used) 400 ppm enzyme "on top" complex SSF added after extrusion (DE400), 800 ppm SSF enzyme complex added "on top" after extrusion (DE800)) with four replications, totaling 20 experimental units. Inclusion of 200 ppm (DE200); Inclusion of 400 ppm (DE400); Inclusion of 600 ppm (DE600), whereas in experiment 2 with tambacu 240 animals distributed into six treatments (Control (without enzymes) were used Inclusion 800 ppm (DE800); Inclusion 1000 ppm (DE1000)) with four replications, totaling 24 experimental units. In both experiments the experimental diets contained the same wording, differing only in the inclusion levels of the enzyme complex SSF. The fish were fed four times a day (8, 11, 14 and 17 hr) to satiation avoiding feed leftovers. The tests were conducted for 56 days in a recirculation system with temperature control, aeration and light. In experiment 1 it was noted that the diets containing the enzyme complex SSF positively influenced weight gain, and the inclusion of the enzyme complex after the extrusion process conducive to performance, recommending the inclusion of tilapia to 800 ppm "on top". In the second experiment, it was observed that the inclusion of 600 ppm SSF enzyme complex "on top" in rations for tambacus promotes better feed conversion ratios. No improvement was observed in the same parameter with increasing inclusion of this complex, being recommended the inclusion of 600 ppm "on top" in rations for tambacus.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) de Mark Twain (1835-1910) tem estado de modo frequente na berlinda. Em cada época, desde o seu lançamento, a proibição da obra, nas bibliotecas e escolas, foi motivada pelas temáticas tratadas, pelos dialetos criados ou pela reiteração da palavra nigger(s). No Brasil, as traduções da obra fazem parte do nosso Polissistema Literário de Tradução desde 1934 (Monteiro Lobato). Visto que a obra foi lançada há mais de cem anos, muitos têm se dedicado a ela, a fim de discutir suas principais controvérsias. Esta pesquisa visa a apresentar algo diferente na forma de analisar os dados da obra e de quatro de suas traduções. Para tanto, elegeu-se a Linguística de Corpus (LC) como metodologia e principal abordagem, pois a LC oferece a possibilidade de investigar uma grande quantidade de dados por meio eletrônico (WordSmith Tools, Scott, 2006), assegura precisão na apresentação das informações, e também mostra dados não detectados a olho nu pelo analista. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa apresenta um estudo dirigido pelo corpus embasado na lista de palavras-chave que detectou nigger(s) como a palavra mais relevante. A partir desse dado, delineou-se o objetivo geral do estudo que é verificar a importância que o termo nigger(s) assume na caracterização dos negros em Huckleberry Finn por meio do discurso racial, investigando o campo semântico racismo/escravidão. Para tanto, julgou-se necessário buscar na literatura de língua inglesa obras do século XIX (nove narrativas sobre escravos) que também empregaram o termo nigger(s), a fim de comparar as narrativas e a obra de Twain e verificar (des)semelhanças na construção do discurso racial. Por ser nigger um termo culturalmente marcado e os tradutores brasileiros o traduzirem por um vocábulo neutro (negro ou escravo), decidiu-se investigar obras brasileiras do século XIX (em número de seis) sobre a escravidão, a fim de entender a (não) existência de um vocábulo que se aproxime da carga semântica de nigger, com o intuito de confrontar os termos usados pelos autores brasileiros com aqueles usados pelos tradutores. Assim sendo, a tese a ser demonstrada é que Huckleberry Finn, embora use nigger(s) reiteradamente, caracteriza os negros de forma positiva, subvertendo o discurso racial, e emprega nigger(s) com o fim de mostrar como a sociedade estadunidense do século XIX tratava os negros de forma negativa. As obras brasileiras analisadas revelaram um termo para representar os negros, crioulo, cuja prosódia é negativa; porém os tradutores não fazem uso desse termo, possivelmente pelo fato de as normas do nosso Polissistema Literário, ligadas ao grau de aceitabilidade (TOURY, 1995) da tradução, imporem uma reescritura consoante com o discurso politicamente correto de nossos dias. Since it was published, the prohibition to use the book imposed on libraries and schools has been caused by the issues Twain addressed, the dialects he created and his repeated use of the word nigger(s).The translations of Huckleberry Finn have been part of Brazils Translation Literary Polysystem since 1934, when a Portuguese version was published by Monteiro Lobato. Given that Mark Twains work came out more than one hundred years ago, many people have dedicated themselves to studying it in order to discuss its main controversial topics. The purpose of our research is to propose a different manner of analyzing Huckleberry Finns data and four of its translations into Portuguese. To that end, we have chosen Corpus Linguistics (CL) as our work methodology and main approach, because it offers the possibility of investigating a large amount of data by electronic tools (WordSmith Tools, Scott, 2006) which ensures the accuracy of the information presented by the analyst and shows data not detected with the naked eye. Therefore, this research consists of a corpus-driven study grounded in a list of key words, which revealed that the most relevant word was nigger(s) These data have allowed us to set the overall purpose of the study, namely to find out the importance of the word nigger(s) for Mark Twains depiction of the Black characters of Huckleberry Finn in his racial discourse, through our exploration of the racism/slavery semantic field. For that purpose, we found it necessary to search for works in English Literature written in the 19th century (nine narratives on slaves) that also used the word nigger(s). The purpose was to compare those narratives with Twains novel and check for similarities and differences in their construction of racial discourse. Because nigger is a culturally marked word and Brazilian translators use a neuter word to translate it (negro or escravo) we decided to dig into Brazilian works on slavery written in the 19th century (six of them) in order to understand the (in)existence of a word whose semantic content approximates that of the word nigger and to contrast the words used by Brazilian authors against those used by translators. The Brazilian works that we analyzed have revealed a word used to depict Black people, crioulo, which has a negative prosody; however, translators do not use this word, maybe because the standards of Brazils Literary Polysystem, linked to the translations level of acceptability (TOURY, 1995) impose a rewriting in tune with the current politically correct discourse. This PhD dissertation also aims at showing the remarkable contribution of Corpus Linguistics to literary studies, given that concordance lines have allowed us to carry out analyses that would have been impossible if this methodology had not been applied, considering the little time we had for conducting the research (four years), the number of literary works we examined (twenty) and the semantic field, which cannot be investigated with the naked eye.

Conrad's style in the Nigger of the 'Narcissus' and the Rover

This thesis explores stylistic features in two novels by Joseph Conrad--The Nigger of the "Narcissus" published in 1897 and The Rover published in 1923. The main focus of the discussion of these novels is the way in which form and meaning are integrated, that is, how style creates and affects theme and subject. In particular, the various literary devices that create style--the individual word, the sentence, and larger elements such as metaphoric and metonymic patterns—are dealt with. These elements are considered under three headings: dialogue, narrative, and imagery. The mimetic character of dialogue, its integration into a text, the various types of dialogue such as reported speech and direct discourse, and variations of dialogue such as interior monologue and free indirect style are discussed in relation to theme. Secondly, narrative, the larger frame into which dialogue fits, is treated at length, with narrative method, the characteristics of narrative prose in both novels, and the effects produced by Conrad's attention to rhythm and vocabulary forming the central concerns of this section. Lastly, metaphor and simile are discussed as stylistic elements not confined to individual sentences or passages but extending over an entire work, and as the means by which visual and auditory impressions are conveyed to the reader. The traditional types of simile and metaphor, "as if" and "as though" clauses functioning as similes, and metonymic images are analyzed with the intention of demonstrating the relationship between technique and vision. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Conrad's impressionism the treatment of space and atmosphere in selected works

This thesis focuses on Conrad's representation of space and atmosphere in the "impressionistic" works published between 1897 and 1904, notably The Nigger of the "Narcissus" (1897), "Heart of Darkness" (1899), Lord Jim (1900), and Nostromo (1904). The many conflicting statements regarding the nature of Conrad's impressionism lead one to ask two fundamental questions: What constitutes this strange and elusive phenomenon, and how does it bear upon interpretation? This thesis works towards defining the elusive quality of Conrad's writing by investigating and assessing the contribution of impressionist techniques in the creation of a pervasive space and atmosphere; secondly, it considers how the various constituent elements interact with, and complement one another to form a dominant mode of fictional space in each work; and, thirdly, it indicates the possible impact that these particular Conradian configurations of space and atmosphere might have upon the interpretation of his impressionist works. The thesis argues that the existential condition of isolatio~experienced by Conrad's heroes and narrators is a consequence of epistemological frustration and fragmentation, which, in turn, is a function of impressionist ontology. There is a definite and complementary relationship between each of these notions in Conrad's fiction. The mysterious atmosphere in his works results from the interplay between various configurations of theme, narration and description, and these novelistic elements correspond roughly with the notions of existential isolation (the dominant theme), epistemology (narrating, telling and (re)telling as a method of knowing and understanding the space in which the characters find themselves) and, lastly, the ontological dimensions of the various modes of fictional space (as realized in description). The evocation and invocation of cosmic space in The Nigger of the "Narcissus," the mapping of a dorriinant symbolic space in "Heart of Darkness," the (re)constructions of Jim's psychological space in Lord Jim, and, finally, the "transcription" and "inscription" of a mythical space in Nostromo, indicate a definite development from epistemological to ontological issues. Phrased in more theoretical terms, this development is a movement from asking predominantly epistemological questions like "How can I interpret this world of which I am a part?"
