Emergence des adjectifs dans le langage de l'enfant en français et en anglais : Etude de 3 cas. / The emergence of adjectives in child language : Three case studies in French and English

Enzinger, Claire 06 December 2013 (has links)
Adjectives have not always had good press among writers, as they may reflect a distorted prose. Researchers in early lexical development currently regard adjectives as problematic: they may well emerge late in child language, and comprise a small portion of the lexicon. However, we argue that it is precisely this property, along with their subjective stance, which makes adjectives relevant for research. Given that their choice is non obligatory, both on the paradigmatic axis (for attributive adjectives) and on the syntagmatic one (determinative and classifying functions excluded), these markers may help reveal the speaker’s sensory, perceptual and mental worlds. Using a theoretical approach at the crossroads of the French enunciative and the Anglo-Saxon usage-based theories, the data of three children speaking French, English, and bilingual French English, were analysed. We first tracked how their inventories developed until their fourth birthday, the range during which considerable variations occur. These perspectives were then broadened to encompass other categories so as to further understand how the adjectival category develops within this larger system. The environmental properties that might have an impact on the children’s behaviour were examined in detail. The results show that children first use properties anchored in immediate perceptions, while their parents favour more abstract properties, often expressing affect. The English speaking dyad uses significantly more affective adjectives than the other dyads. Adjectives emerge a few months after the first conventional words, and remain a low frequency category (4% of the lexicon in average).

Improved Usage Model for Web Application Reliability Testing

Wan, Bo 31 July 2012 (has links)
Testing the reliability of an application usually requires a good usage model that accurately captures the likely sequences of inputs that the application will receive from the environment. The models being used in the literature are mostly based on Markov chains. They are used to generate test cases that are statistically close to what the applica-tion is expected to receive when in production. In this thesis, we propose a model for reli-ability testing that is created directly from the log file of a web application. Our proposed model is also based on Markov chains and has two components: one component, based on a modified tree, captures the most frequent behaviors, while the other component is another Markov chain that captures infrequent behaviors. The result is a statistically cor-rect model that shows clearly what most users do on the site. The thesis also presents an evaluation method for estimating the accuracy of vari-ous reliability-testing usage models. The method is based on comparison between ob-served users’ traces and traces inferred from the usage model. Our method gauges the accuracy of the reliability-testing usage model by calculating the sum of goodness-of-fit values of each traces and scaling the result between 0 and 1. Finally, we present an experimental study on the log of a real web site and discuss the way to use proposed usage model to generate test sequences, as well as strength and weakness of the model for reliability testing.

Implantation et usages d’un réseau social d’entreprise : l’expérience d’Astral

Portela, Audrey 26 November 2012 (has links)

New Perspectives on the System Usage Construct

Burton-Jones, Andrew 11 August 2005 (has links)
Information systems are designed to support human and organizational purposes. To achieve their ends, information systems must be used. Although this may seem to be self-evident, there are many aspects of systems usage that are not so, and yet, in spite of this, there has been little intense conceptual scrutiny of this construct in past research. The objective of this thesis, therefore, is to develop new in-depth perspectives for studying system usage. Drawing on critical realist assumptions and studies of research diversity, I explain how epistemological factors enable while ontological factors constrain the diversity of meanings of system usage, and I build on this reasoning to advance a systematic approach for conceptualizing and measuring system usage in an appropriate way for a given research context. To demonstrate the approach and judge its usefulness, I carry out three empirical studies to test whether measures of system usage that are selected according to the proposed approach provide more explanatory power and lead to more coherent results in specific research contexts than other measures of system usage. Exploring the relationship between system usage and user task performance among 804 users of spreadsheet software, the experiments reveal support for the usefulness of the approach and demonstrate how it can enable researchers to conceptualize and measure system usage in an appropriate manner for a given research context. Together, the conceptual approach and empirical studies contribute by: (1) providing a systematic way to conceptualize and measure system usage for a given study context, (2) revealing rich new directions for research on the nature of system usage, its antecedents, and its consequences, and (3) suggesting a new approach for construct development and investigation in IS research.

The effect of consumer knowledge, switching cost for the usage intention of 3G video phone service

Lu, Hsueh-lung 04 September 2008 (has links)
The industry of mobile communication in Taiwan has recently become the fastest growing representative in the mobile communication related industries in the world. After several years of development, the industry has moved into the application development stage for 3rd generation (3G) technologies. Within the related services offered by 3G technologies, the most noticeable and the earliest one to set into promotion are video phone service. However, since 3G technologies become available in year 2005, the utilization of video phone service and its popularity keeps at slow growth. Scholars have pointed out that the consumers¡¦ perception of the products can have impact on their purchasing and using decisions. Further, some scholars also think that if the consumers believe the risk of change is high; their willingness to accept new services is lowered. Based on the above two factors, this research examines the current status on consumers¡¦ perception on 3G technologies and also investigates the interrelationships among consumers¡¦ perception of the cost of change and the utilization of 3G video phone service. After going through the literature on the subject, this research has categorized consumer knowledge into 4 types. In addition, the switching cost which arising from the change of voice service to 3G video phone service by consumers has also been included into the study. The conclusions and recommendations resulting from the investigation and analysis of current consumer knowledge and the switching cost are as follows: 1.Consumers¡¦ product existence knowledge on 3G video phone service and the persuasion knowledge does not have noticeable impact on its usage intention. However, the product attributes knowledge and the knowledge to purchase and usage have positive noticeable impact on its usage intention. 2.The switching cost for consumers to move from voice services to 3G video phone service has noticeable negative impact on its usage intention for 3G video phone service. 3.Consumers¡¦ persuasion knowledge for 3G video phone service has a negative relationship on the switching cost of change for 3G video phone service.

Thermomechanical pulping (TMP), chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP) and biothermomechanical pulping (BTMP) of bugweed (Solanum mauritianum) and Pinus Patula

Vena, P. F. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Forest and Wood Science))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / In this study the mechanical pulping characteristics of Solanum mauritianum (Bugweed) were investigated using Thermomechanical (TMP), Chemithermomechanical (CTMP) and Biothermomechanical (BTMP) methods. Results were compared with those obtained from Pinus patula pulps treated under similar conditions. In the TMP pulping trials, the pretreatment of wood chips involved soaking of chips in water overnight prior to refining. The CTMP pulping trials involved first the impregnation of wood chips with 3% sodium sulfite and 2% sodium carbonate solution for 24 hours before refining. Coculture of hemicellulolytic Aspergillus flavipes and ligninolytic Pycnoporus sanguineus were inoculated to the wood chips in BTMP trials, to enhance wood chip breakdown. Solanum mauritianum (Bugweed) wood chips produced the highest pulp yields and less shive content compared to Pinus patula treated under similar pulping conditions. This could be ascribed to easier fibre separation and lesser fibre damage, as well as its lower extractive content. Results showed that the pretreatment of wood chips prior to TMP pulping increased paper strength properties compared to the pulp prepared from the untreated wood chips. Chemically pretreated wood chips consumed a larger amount of refining energy. With regard to brightness levels, handsheets from Pinus patula pulps recorded lower brightness values than those from Bugweed pulps. This was related to the lighter colour of the Bugweed wood chips and the higher extractive content of Pinus patula. The high brightness level of the CTMP pulps could be attributed to a modification of the lignin chromophores and the extractive removal, which contributed to a lower absorption coefficient of the pulp. Handsheets from BTMP pulps showed a reduction in brightness compared to the TMP and CTMP pulps. This was caused by the darkening of the wood chips during the fungal incubation period. Pulp and paper properties of Bugweed compared favourably to those results published for other hardwoods. The results of this study suggest possibilities for using Bugweed in high yield pulping processes.

Descoberta de perfis de uso de web services / Web services usage profiles discovery

Vollino, Bruno Winiemko January 2013 (has links)
During the life cycle of a web service, several changes are made in its interface, which possibly are incompatible with regard to current usage and may break client applications. Providers must make decisions about changes on their services, most often without insight on the effect these changes will have over their customers. Existing research and tools fail to input provider with proper knowledge about the actual usage of the service interface’s features, considering the distinct types of customers, making it impossible to assess the actual impact of changes. This work presents a framework for the discovery of web service usage profiles, which constitute a descriptive model of the usage patterns found in distinct groups of clients, concerning the usage of service interface features. The framework supports a user in the process of knowledge discovery over service usage data through semi-automatic and configurable tasks, which assist the preparation and analysis of usage data with the minimum user intervention possible. The framework performs the monitoring of web services interactions, loads pre-processed usage data into a unified database, and supports the generation of usage profiles. Data mining techniques are used to group clients according to their usage patterns of features, and these groups are used to build service usage profiles. The entire process is configured via parameters, which allows the user to determine the level of detail of the usage information included in the profiles, and the criteria for evaluating the similarity between client applications. The proposal is validated through experiments with synthetic data, simulated according to features expected in the use of a real service. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework allows the discovery of useful service usage profiles, and provide evidences about the proper parameterization of the framework.
