No. of bitstreams: 1 Alyssandra Gomes.pdf: 368450 bytes, checksum: c45d86edcc0c0df301daed80f6d1ac1d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-26 / Adolescence is a recent phenomenon that starts to take its social place on the XIX century. Even though it didn’t receive proper theoretical evidence in Psychoanalysis, adolescence makes itself present in Freudian and Lacanian texts. Freud, in his classical work “Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality”, dedicates one of the essays to the changes that take place in puberty. Adolescence coincides with puberty, so we can notice that this moment is not an easy one and specially not one easy to go through. Changes occur: on the body, on the way of thinking and acting and also in the position one occupied before. The main goal of this paper was to discuss how the submission to the paternal function makes a “normal” adolescence possible, based on the analysis of the movie “Before the World Ends”. As resulting branches of the proposal of the movie analysis, the research tried to identify in its specific objectives the following aspects: theoretical considerations by Sigmund Freud on the Oedipus complex and castration and, by Lacan, on the paternal function. In order to do so, a bibliographic research was performed based on Freud’s indications about the psychoanalytical method, which has as specificity the unconscious overdetermination and, consequently, its inapprehensible character. This paper presents Freudian notions of infantile sexuality, of the Oedipus complex and of the genital phallic organization as well as the subjective implications of these issues to the adolescent. The paper also present contributions by Jacques Lacan, based of Freud’s work, on the paternal metaphor, the three “times” – that is to say the three moments – of the Oedipus complex and how they reflect on a “normal” adolescence. In what concerns the discussion of the movie, the following sequence was privileged when presenting the material: from the scene where Daniel receives the first letter by his biological father – of whom he hadn’t known before – to the moment when he receives an invitation to go and meet him. We highlight how adolescence is permeated by contradictions, difficulties, joys, conquest and losses. Based on the discussion, we indicate that the paternal function is not exclusively referred to the real existence of a father, but on the symbolic marks left by him who, as pointed Lacan, is in the center of the Oedipus question. In the movie, the character Daniel starts to dress himself with photographer’s clothes just like his father. From there, if the father cannot give answers to his questions, it’s through the identification that Daniel will build his own answers. The paternal function makes it possible for the adolescent to go from adolescence to a different time, this one being a subjective time, related to the responsibility to his own desire.

Patrícia Tolaine do Amaral 02 March 2000 (has links)
Analysis of reinforced concrete column instability in is not a simple task making the engineers to use simple designing processes or sometimes choose simple column geometry. The reason for that is the little knowledge of the real behaviour of the structure. Many studies have been made so far regarding the ultimate capacity of compressed columns following recommendations of several international codes. The present study is related to the stability of slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to bending moments and normal forces. It follows the first work made by de Paula (1988), in which the investigation of slender reinforced columns has been conducted. This is here completed by introducing other parameters in the analysis such as: slenderness ratio, distribution of the first order bending moments along the column and long-term loads. It also proposes an alternative procedure to avoid computing the actual ultimate load capacity in compression. A conventional ultimate curvature is proposed to give an approximated final bending moment distribution along the column, taking into account the second other effects. The column is then analysed considering only the ultimate material failure criteria. Thus, the instability is indirectly verified.

Modelo de calibração ultraestrutural / Ultrastructural calibration model

Talarico, Alina Marcondes 23 January 2014 (has links)
Nowadays many PT groups were established by INMETRO, including the motor\'s test group. Each group is formed by laboratories measuring the same artifact and their measurements are compared through statistic methods. The motor\'s group chose a gasoline engine 1.0, kindly provided by GM as an artifact. The artifact\'s power was measured at ten points of rotation by 6 laboratories. Here, motivated by this set data, we extend the Barnet comparative calibration model (1969) to assess the compatibility of the laboratories considering the Student-t distribution and show the results obtained from application and simulation of this set data

Comparison of Different Methods for Estimating Log-normal Means

Tang, Qi 01 May 2014 (has links)
The log-normal distribution is a popular model in many areas, especially in biostatistics and survival analysis where the data tend to be right skewed. In our research, a total of ten different estimators of log-normal means are compared theoretically. Simulations are done using different values of parameters and sample size. As a result of comparison, ``A degree of freedom adjusted" maximum likelihood estimator and Bayesian estimator under quadratic loss are the best when using the mean square error (MSE) as a criterion. The ten estimators are applied to a real dataset, an environmental study from Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC), Super Fund Site in Rhode Island.

Resolution of Singularities of Pairs Preserving Semi-simple Normal Crossings

Vera Pacheco, Franklin 26 March 2012 (has links)
Let X denote a reduced algebraic variety and D a Weil divisor on X. The pair (X,D) is said to be semi-simple normal crossings (semi-snc) at a in X if X is simple normal crossings at a (i.e., a simple normal crossings hypersurface, with respect to a local embedding in a smooth ambient variety), and D is induced by the restriction to X of a hypersurface that is simple normal crossings with respect to X. For a pair (X,D), over a field of characteristic zero, we construct a composition of blowings-up f:X'-->X such that the transformed pair (X',D') is everywhere semi-simple normal crossings, and f is an isomorphism over the semi-simple normal crossings locus of (X,D). The result answers a question of Kolla'r.

The effects of three different priors for variance parameters in the normal-mean hierarchical model

Chen, Zhu, 1985- 01 December 2010 (has links)
Many prior distributions are suggested for variance parameters in the hierarchical model. The “Non-informative” interval of the conjugate inverse-gamma prior might cause problems. I consider three priors – conjugate inverse-gamma, log-normal and truncated normal for the variance parameters and do the numerical analysis on Gelman’s 8-schools data. Then with the posterior draws, I compare the Bayesian credible intervals of parameters using the three priors. I use predictive distributions to do predictions and then discuss the differences of the three priors suggested. / text

A reinterpretation, and new demonstrations of, the Borel Normal Number Theorem

Rockwell, Daniel Luke 09 September 2011 (has links)
The notion of a normal number and the Normal Number Theorem date back over 100 years. Émile Borel first stated his Normal Number Theorem in 1909. Despite their seemingly basic nature, normal numbers are still engaging many mathematicians to this day. In this paper, we provide a reinterpretation of the concept of a normal number. This leads to a new proof of Borel's classic Normal Number Theorem, and also a construction of a set that contains all absolutely normal numbers. We are also able to use the reinterpretation to apply the same definition for a normal number to any point in a symbolic dynamical system. We then provide a proof that the Fibonacci system has all of its points being normal, with respect to our new definition. / Graduation date: 2012
