Bioaccumulation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in molluscs and fish at the Sai Gon - Dong Nai estuary

The aim of this study is to assess the biological accumulation of pesticide residues in aquatic organisms in Sai Gon - Dong Nai (SG-DN) estuary. Fish and mollusks were collected directly at the Soai Rap and Long Tau estuary of the SG-DN river system, washed and separated for taking the tissue. The organochlorine compounds from the tissue were then extracted and analyzed by gas chromatography system. The results showed that, the concentration of OCPs in Tegillarca granosa, Meretrix lyrata, Margaritifera auricularia and Bostrychus sinensis varied from 6.4 to 59.9 μg/kg, 7.2 to 322 μg/kg, 4.5 to 62.1 μg/kg and 2.9 to 114.3 μg/kg fresh weight, respectively. In general, molluscs species that accumulate more heptachlor, aldrin, endrin or dieldrin tend to accumulate less DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Endosulfan was the most commonly found in three bivalve mollusks while DDTs (1.5–75.2 μg/kg, averaging 8.7 μg/kg weight) was the most popular OCPs in the fish (Bostrychus sinensis) samples. In DDT group, the p,p’-DDT metabolite accounted for the largest percentage, reaching 50% of total DDTs. Nhìn chung, loài nhuyễn thể nào tích lũy nhiều heptachlor, aldrin, endrin hoăc dieldrin có xu hướng tích lũy ít DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Endosunfan là nhóm thuốc được tìm thấy nhiều nhất trong các loài nhuyễn thể nghiên cứu. Ngược lại, nhóm DDT lại phổ biến ở cá Bostrychus sinensis (1.5–75.2 μg/kg, trung bình 8.7 μg/kg trọng lượng). Accumulation by Dispossession through Sports Mega-Events: The case of Vila Autódromo and the creation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Park

The theoretical framework of accumulation by dispossession allows for a critical examination of urban development projects within neoliberalism (Harvey, 2009; Swyngedouw, Moulaert & Rodriguez, 2002). Within the same neoliberal paradigm, sports mega-events have come to play a significant role for urban regeneration and policy-making (Hall, 2006). Meanwhile attending to the well-documented cases of mass-evictions and reduction of standard housing rights as a recurrent consequence of cities hosting such events (Blunden, 2012), we believe that such a critical examination is arguably important in order to do justice to these kinds of urban regeneration projects. In this paper we analyse, by a case study approach, how mega-events amplify and accelerate the process of accumulation by dispossession. We attend to the development of the Olympic Park and Olympic Village, Barra da Tijuca, in preparation for the Rio 2016 Games, as well as the neighbouring community of Vila Autódromo. By analysing different types of source material, we discuss how the mechanisms of privatisation and entrepreneurialism are reflected in our case; understood as two important mechanisms that facilitate the process of accumulation by dispossession (Harvey, 2009).

Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate Reduces Fat Accumulation in Caenorhabditis Elegans

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), also known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate, is a polyphenol that is most abundant in tea. It has been shown from many studies that consumption of EGCG can contribute to weight loss, however, the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. To determine how EGCG acts to reduce fat, an organism model Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is introduced, which is a useful animal system in exploring crucial biological mechanisms that are readily applicable to humans. In this study, different strains were raised for two days on a diet with or without 100µM and 200µM EGCG treatment: N2 (i.e., wild type) and mutants (i.e., knockdown of fat metabolism related genes). EGCG’s effect on fat reduction was characterized by triglyceride content, food consumption and physiological behaviors. Our results showed that 100 and 200 µM EGCG significantly reduced the triglyceride content of wild type worms by 10% and 20%, respectively, without affecting its food intake and physiological behaviors. Additionally, EGCG could effectively reduce fat accumulation in C. elegans dependent on acs-2 and atgl-1.

Peatland Carbon Accumulation Following Wildfire on the Boreal Plains: Implications for Peatland Reclamation and Wildfire Management

Peatlands in the sub-humid Boreal Plains of Alberta exist at the limit of their climatic tolerance and are vulnerable to wildfire. This is especially true at the interface between the peatland and forestland (margins) due to water table fluctuation resulting in high peat bulk density and low moisture content during dry periods in some peatland systems. Deep burning at the margins may reduce a peatland's ability to recover to its previous state, leading to a reduction in area and/or collapse following fire, and bringing into question the long-term stability of Boreal Plains peatlands on the landscape under current and future climate predictions. Previous research has identified small peatlands located at a mid-topographic position on coarse sediments as hotspots for deep burning, as these peatlands are not regularly connected to regional groundwater flow. The ability of these peatland systems to recover lost carbon from both the interior and margin within the fire return interval, however, has not yet been investigated. This thesis further examines the relationship between surficial sediment assemblages and the impact of wildfire on overlying peatlands through assessment of organic soil carbon accumulation following wildfire across the Boreal Plains landscape. Peatland organic soil recovery along a chronosequence was assessed in the interior and margin of 26 ombrotrophic bogs located at various positions on the post-glaciation landscape of Northern Alberta using estimates of organic soil carbon accumulation calculated through loss on ignition of peat above the uppermost charcoal layer in peat cores from each site, as well as characterization of peat properties along a transect from the adjacent forestland into the peatland interior. Soil organic carbon accumulation with time since fire was greater in studied peatland interiors than margins. Underlying sediments were found to have little effect on total soil organic carbon accumulation in the interior and margins of the studied peatlands, indicating that organic soil carbon accumulation rates following wildfire estimated in this study can be extended to ombrotrophic bogs across the Boreal Plains landscape. Though total soil organic carbon accumulation following wildfire does not appear to be influenced by hydrogeological setting, the ability of a peatland to recover the quantity of carbon lost within the fire return interval will be dependent on the amount of carbon which was released through smouldering, which is influenced by hydrogeological setting for peatland margins. Based on published measurements of organic soil carbon loss during wildfire and organic soil carbon accumulation rates estimated in this thesis, peatlands located at topographic lows on coarse grained glaciofluvial outwash sediments or on low-relief, fine grained sediment deposits from glaciolacustrine or subglacial paleoenvironments are predicted to be resilient to wildfire on the Boreal Plains landscape. Peatlands which experience severe smouldering at the margins, such as ephemerally perched systems on glaciofluvial outwash sediments, will likely undergo permanent loss of legacy carbon stores. The resilience of peatlands which are perched above regional groundwater on glaciofluvial outwash or stagnant ice moraine deposits is unknown at this time; further investigation into water table dynamics, margin peat properties, and smouldering depths in these systems is required. Identification of peatland systems which are at risk of permanent carbon loss at the margins and those which are most resilient to wildfire in this thesis can be applied to wildfire management strategies and the design of peatland systems for reclamation of oil sands leases. The stability of natural and created peatlands through time on a landscape where wildfire is frequent is an important consideration in terms of both lasting ecosystem services and the potential risk to fire suppression and community safety that vulnerable systems pose. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Application of a Mobile Flux Lab for the Atmospheric Measurement of Emissions (FLAME)

According to the World Health Organization, urban air pollution is a high public health priority due its linkage to cardio-pulmonary disease and association with increased mortality and morbidity (1, 2). Additionally, air pollution impacts climate change, visibility, and ecosystem health. The development of effective strategies for improving air quality requires accurate estimates of air pollutant emissions. In response to the need for new approaches to measuring emissions, we have designed a mobile Flux Lab for the Atmospheric Measurement of Emissions (FLAME) that applies a proven, science-based method known as eddy covariance for the direct quantification of anthropogenic emissions to the atmosphere. The mobile flux lab is a tool with novel, multifaceted abilities to assess air quality and improve the fidelity of emission inventories. Measurements of air pollutant concentrations in multiple locations at the neighborhood scale can provide much greater spatial resolution for population exposure assessments. The lab's mobility allows it to target specific sources, and plumes from these can be analyzed to determine emission factors. Through eddy covariance, the lab provides the new ability to directly measure emissions of a suite of air pollutants. We have deployed the FLAME to three different settings: a rural Appalachian town where coal transport is the dominant industry; schools in the medium-sized city of Roanoke, Virginia; and the large urban areas around Norfolk, Virginia, to measure neighborhood-scale emissions of air pollution. These areas routinely experience high ozone and particulate matter concentrations and include a diverse array of residential neighborhoods and industries. The FLAME is able to capture emissions from all ground-based sources, such as motor vehicles, rail and barge traffic, refuse fires and refueling stations, for which no direct measurement method has been available previously. Experiments focus on carbon dioxide (CO₂), the principal greenhouse gas responsible for climate change; nitrogen oxides (NOx), a key ingredient in ground-level ozone and acid rain; volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a second key ingredient in ozone and many of which are air toxics; and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a cause of mortality, decreased visibility, and climate change. This research provides some of the first measurements of neighborhood-scale anthropogenic emissions of CO₂, NOx, VOCs and PM2.5 and as a result, the first opportunity to validate official emission inventories directly. The results indicate that a mobile eddy covariance system can be used successfully to measure fluxes of multiple pollutants in a variety of urban settings. With certain pollutants in certain locations, flux measurements confirmed inventories, but in others, they disagreed by factors of up to five, suggesting that parts of the inventory may be severely over- or underestimated. Over the scale of a few kilometers within a city, emissions were highly heterogeneous in both space and time. FLAME-based measurements also confirmed published emission factors from coal barges and showed that idling vehicles are the dominant source of emissions of air toxics around seven schools in southwest Virginia. Measurements from this study corroborate existing emission inventories of CO₂ and NOx and suggest that inventories of PM2.5 may be overestimated. Despite the tremendous spatial and temporal variability in emissions found in dense urban areas, CO₂ fluxes on average are very similar across the areas in this study and other urban areas in the developed world. Nevertheless, the high level of variability in spatial and temporal patterns of emissions presents a challenge to air quality modelers. The finding that emissions from idling vehicles at schools are likely responsible for creating hot spots of air toxics adds to the urgency of implementing no-idling and other rules to reduce the exposure of children to such pollutants. Ultimately, the results of this study can be used in combination with knowledge from existing emission inventories to improve the science and policies surrounding air pollution. / Ph. D.

Measuring Material Properties of Proton Exchange Membranes using Pressure Loaded Blister Testing and Digital Image Correlation

The strength and durability of proton exchange membranes for use in fuel cells has received much attention recently due to the increased push for sustainable alternatives to the internal combustion engine. To be viable, these alternatives must have comparable lifetimes and power outputs to the internal combustion engines they replace. Chemical degradation was once viewed as the most common culprit of early fuel cell failure, but as membranes and catalysts improved, mechanical failure became an important factor. As a result, fundamental research on the mechanically-induced failure mechanisms of fuel cell membranes, coupled with development and processing of less expensive membranes, has become an important topic. The use of the blister test geometry, along with digital image correlation of the deformed shape, creates a self-contained analysis tool useful for measuring the biaxial strength of membranes. In this work, blister tests are used to measure biaxial stress and strain for fuel cell membranes subjected to ramped pressure loading to form stress-strain curves that indicate the onset of yielding under biaxial stress conditions. Stress-life curves are developed experimentally for Gore-Selec? series 57 members using data collected under constant pressure conditions. These results are used to predict blister failure under ramped and fatigue loadings. A newly implemented hydrocarbon membrane system is evaluated with constant-pressure-to-leak blister testing. Improved strength following an isothermal hold at 100°C (pretreatment) is shown to occur. Ramped pressure testing indicates that the material after the pretreatment is stiffer and has a higher yield stress than the material before treatment. Morphological and constitutive characterization indicated differences in the materials that are consistent with the improved performance. / Master of Science
