A user centric security model for tamper-resistant devices

Akram, Raja January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, we propose a ubiquitous and interoperable device based on the smart card architecture to meet the challenges of privacy, trust, and security for traditional and emerging technologies like personal computers, smart phones and tablets. Such a device is referred as User Centric Tamper-Resistant Device (UCTD). To support the smart card architecture for the UCTD initiative, we propose the delegation of smart card ownership from a stringent centralised authority (i.e. the card issuer) to users. This delegation mandated the review of existing smart card mechanisms and their adequate modifications/improvements. Since the inception of smart card technology, the most prevalent ownership model in the smart card industry has been the Issuer Centric Smart Card Ownership Model (ICOM). The ICOM has no doubt played a pivotal role in the proliferation of the technology into various segments of modern life. However, it has been a barrier to the convergence of different services on a smart card. In addition, it might be considered as a hurdle to the adaption of smart card technology into a general-purpose security device. To avoid these issues, we propose citizen ownership of smart cards, referred as the User Centric Smart Card Ownership Model (UCOM). Contrary to the ICOM, it gives the power of decision to install or delete an application on a smart card to its user. The ownership of corresponding applications remains with their respective application providers along with the choice to lease their application to a card or not. In addition, based on the UCOM framework, we also proposed the Coopetitive Architecture for Smart Cards (CASC) that merges the centralised control of card issuers with the provision of application choice to the card user. In the core of the thesis, we analyse the suitability of the existing smart card architectures for the UCOM. This leads to the proposal of three major contributions spanning the smart card architecture, the application management framework, and the execution environment. Furthermore, we propose protocols for the application installation mechanism and the application sharing mechanism (i.e. smart card firewall). In addition to this, we propose a framework for backing-up, migrating, and restoring the smart card contents. Finally, we provide the test implementation results of the proposed protocols along with their performance measures. The protocols are then compared in terms of features and performance with existing smart cards and internet protocols. In order to provide a more detailed analysis of proposed protocols and for the sake of completeness, we performed mechanical formal analysis using the CasperFDR.

Självbestämmande mer eller mindre : En kvalitativ studie om utvecklingstördas självbestämmande ur ett personalperspektiv

Du Rietz, Cecilia, Lang Karlsson, Marie January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to problematize the role of living support in a group home and to examine staff reflections about the users' opportunities for and possibly limits to self determination and, in addition to this, how they work towards supporting this right. The study is conducted through seven semi-structured qualitative interviews. The theoretical points of departure are theories of empowerment and paternalism. We have analysed the study results from the vantage point of these theories. The results are consistent with earlier research showing lack of guidance for supporters and also a lack of common approach towards users.

ARE THE NEEDS AND CONCERNS OF COMPUTER USERS AS IDENTIFIED THROUGH A PARTICIPATORY ERGONOMIC APPROACH REFLECTED IN THE CONTENT OF A TYPICAL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY OFFICE ERGONOMIC EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION?

Phillips, Jill 09 August 2012 (has links)
Using a participatory ergonomic approach, this research explored if the self-identified needs and concerns of computer users are reflected in a typical occupational therapy office ergonomic educational presentation. While the study confirmed that generally the needs of computer users are met, the topics that the participants found to be most relevant were workstation layout and equipment adjustment. This study also revealed that knowledge transfer/translation is an important factor and that clinicians should consider involving clients at the initial development phase of client educational information. The study participants preferred ergonomic information to be communicated in a brief manner, emphasizing action-oriented information and avoiding medical references. They wanted client information to employ humour, colour and lots of “pizzazz.” The manner in which clinical information is communicated to clients is vital for effective client education.

Internet and diaspora : the experience of mainland Chinese immigrant women in Montreal

Zhao, Tian-ying, 1972- January 2005 (has links)
This study examines the role of the Internet in the life of diasporic women. Twenty-nine qualitative interviews were conducted with Mainland Chinese immigrant women in Montreal, Canada to answer three research questions: (1) what is the use and value of the Internet as perceived by these women; (2) how have they experienced the Internet given their particular social situation as immigrants in Montreal; and (3) what diasporic identities are related to these women's Internet practices. The research found that the Internet was perceived by these women mainly as a tool to obtain information, facilitate communication, and access recreation. Its appropriation reflected their special social situation as immigrants and women. Their Internet experience was largely involved in the reproduction of their identification with China, Canada and the Mainland Chinese diaspora, and in some case, in the production of new cultural positions. The study also suggests directions for future research.

Pinterest - En källa till inspiration : En undersökning av Pinterests funktioner, styrkor och svagheter

Mösenbacher Svensson, Malin, Bergström, Sara January 2014 (has links)
Social media are web-based platforms where integration, communication and sharing are possible between users. Over the recent years new forms of social media has rapidly emerged and has become an interesting field of research. It is a new area for marketers to promote their businesses. Pinterest started in 2010 by Ben Stilbermann with the idea that users should be able to share pictures and create their own mood-boards. The objective of this research is to analyse Why Swedish people use Pinterest to create a broader understanding of this new direction of social media that focuses on pictures. Furthermore, we aim to present the functionalities, strengths and weaknesses of Pinterest so that research and marketers have a better understanding of the media itself and how it is used. With a theoretical background of Kitezmanns (2011) seven social media functionalities and Sashittala & Jassawalla (2014) and Chafkin (2012) research on why people use Pinterest, we were able to propose that sharing could be Pinterest’s most significant functionality in Sweden. The strength of Pinterest is its inspirational appeal. Its weakness is suggested to be the overall lack of other appealing functionalities, such as communication and presence, which in our research was almost non-significant to why Swedish people use Pinterest.
