The effects of gesturing, blocked order, and incremental presentation in foreign language learning

Unknown Date (has links)
Research in second language acquisition reveals that adults have difficulty learning the grammatical aspects of a foreign language. The present study investigated the efficacy of three teaching methods that were predicted to help adults better learn the grammar of a foreign language. First, lessons were presented in small pieces that gradually increased to full sentences. Second, lesson trials were blocked such that multiple examples of sentences with the same object or verb were presented consecutively. Third, participants were instructed to gesture the actions of the verbs within sentences. All three methods were predicted to increase the likelihood of learning the grammar form of sentences through guiding adults’ attention to fewer components of language input at a time. In Experiment 1, 82 English native speakers played an adventure videogame designed for the learning of French vocabulary and grammar of French sentences for two one-hour sessions. All three methods were incorporated in the lessons portion of the game resulting in a 2(incremental vs. full sentence) X 2(blocked vs. unblocked order) X 2(gesture vs. no gesture) between subjects design. The results from Experiment 1 revealed a) more nouns were acquired than verbs and b) a trend that the incremental conditions performed worse than the full sentence conditions on the grammar measures. In Experiment 2, 110 adult learners played the French videogame, but only the blocked presentation and gesture imitation methods were incorporated in the lessons portion (omitting the method of incremental presentation). The results from Experiment 2 revealed a) conditions with either method of blocked presentation or gesturing performed better on vocabulary and grammar measures than the unblocked non-gesture condition, and b) the combination of blocked presentation and gesturing led to better learning of inductive grammar than either method alone. The outcome of the study suggests gesturing and blocked order teaching methods that encourage adults to attend to a few but important components within a sentence are advantageous in learning the grammar of a foreign language. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

No. of bitstreams: 1 Raquel Santana Schiavon Sanchez.pdf: 411121 bytes, checksum: c2c5e5e09cb21ce2c58fcaccfc1de299 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-03-12 / This study investigates the influence of non-verbal communication on the efficiency of salespersons, through an analysis of how well different subjects can perceive-recognize universal facial expressions of emotions. Our subjects were 15 salespeople employed by a retail and service company and 100 graduate business students of a university in Goiânia. A questionnaire and the “reading faces” test (Ekman (2003) were applied to each subject. The test consists of 14 photographs of the face of a same person with facial expressions of sadness, disgust, happiness, anger, fear and disdain. The hypthesis, that the more one knows how to interpret emotional facial expressions, the more successful persons are in their sales results (as presented in the literature), was not confirmed, although it was demonstrated in the study that all the salespeople tend to make use of non-verbal communication in their daily activities.

Psicanálise e práticas espirituais de cura: o inconsciente e a comunicação mediúnica / Psychoanalysis and spiritual healing rites: the unconscious and the mediumistic communication

Alexandre Mantovani 10 February 2011 (has links)
Communication is an important subject in psychoanalysis. Differing from a common conversation, when is possible to identify the position of the emitter and messages receiver, in psychoanalysis there is an opacity to localize these elements of the communicational process. It occurs because in the psychoanalytical situation patient does not drive his message to the analyst as himself, but to a figure built from his psychic reality. Message is codified in forms and unconscious process. Some concepts as countertransference, projective identification and rêverie suggest the existence of unconscious communicative process. This is a polemic question about localization of the self at the analytical pair and some situations suggest an unconscious exchange of selves parts. The aim of this work was investigate the application of these concepts at the research of spiritual healing practices, because in these contexts there are situations which suggests the existence of nonconscious communication phenomenon. As methodological strategy was adopted the participate-research realized in spiritism and umbanda´s centers localized in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP. Also were realized psychotherapeutic consults, both in the religious centers and in private consulting room Data were analyzed using concepts of countertranference, projective identification, transitional phenomenon and contributions of fundamental psychopathology. For the results, we took into account the experience of the researcher in the two centers to compare the data. In both centers were observed relevant situations for the research. At both centers the researcher took care which many number of examples of mediumistic communication. Data show that bodily sensations are a key element in psychic communication. The physical sensations are constituted as signs of recognition of the presence of spirits and also contribute to the communicative process within the group of participants in worship. Interaction between patients, mediums and incorporated spirits evokes images that are important for the spiritual healing. Comparing psychological and spiritual consults, data show that is possible to use psychoanalysis to built non-reductive theoretical models useful for ritual research. Were defined two theoretical models. One was called sensorial communicative circuit and it is referent to the sensorial communicative process. The other was called dream way and its referent to the processes that involves words and pictograms. These models were inspired in psychoanalytical concepts and can be to interpret situations presents in psychotherapy and the study of healing rites.

Intervenção nas afasias com o uso da comunicação suplementar e/ou alternativa / Intervention in aphasia using the augmentative and alternative communication

Franco, Elen Caroline 24 February 2012 (has links)
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association defines language as a complex and dynamic system of conventional symbols, used in various ways during the communication. Changes in brain regions responsible for speech and language, can bring the aphasia, which is defined as the as the loss or impairment of language function caused by brain disease. Aphasic individuals may require supplementary resources of communication and/or alternative to supplement or replace the transmission of a message, which cannot be transmitted through verbal communication. According to von Tetzchner and Jensen, the Augmentative and Alternative Communication implicate the use of alternative modes of nonverbal communication, to supplement or replace the oral language which may absent or impaired. Thus, this study aimed to describe the use of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication in two cases of aphasia after stroke. The speech therapy was divided in four stages that approached since the display of forms of communication for the album until the effective use this resource. In all stages, was used the pictographic system Picture Communication Symbols, because it is a system that has greater iconicity. By reapplication of tests, was possible to show improvement in oral ability, writing, reading and denomination the two participants. To this end, the speech therapy was performed with two aphasic participants, using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This study allows conclude that the speech therapy using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication in two case of aphasia after stroke, brought benefits to functional communication the participants, and these resources had a augmentative role making communication more efficient and brought benefits in the rehabilitation process, promoting development of skills in reading e naming.

Assessing and Influencing the Attitude and Knowledge of Selected Post-Secondary Students Concerning Body Language

Lester, E. W. Bud 08 1900 (has links)
This investigation, which was conducted on the post-secondary level and included vocational and academic students, was undertaken to develop an instrument to assess the attitude and knowledge of students concerning body language and to develop a module of instruction in body language to favorably influence their attitude and knowledge concerning body language. Hypotheses were formulated related to the differences in mean effective and cognitive scores of the experimental group who were taught body language and the control group. Additional hypotheses were formulated related to mean differences in the scores of students differing in age, sex, business experience, and prior exposure to body language. The findings of this study included first, the testing of the instrument; second, the testing of the validity of the research design and third, the testing of the hypotheses. The following conclusions are based on the findings of the study: the instrument seems to be acceptable for assessing the attitude and knowledge of post—secondary students concerning body language, the module of instruction in body language seems to be acceptable as a basis for influencing the attitude and knowledge of post—secondary students concerning body language, the mid-management and speech students were comparable in attitude and knowledge concerning body language before and after being taught the module, any prior exposure to the principles of body language seemed to favorably influence student's attitude and knowledge concerning body language both before and after they were taught, the age and business experience of students produced no apparent influence on student attitude and knowledge of body language, the sex of the student seemed to produce no apparent influence on student attitude and knowledge of body language.

Embodiment in affective evaluations : the case of the facial feedback effect

Kaiser, Jakob January 2017 (has links)
Theories of embodiment propose that our bodily states can influence affective processing. This thesis investigated the possibility that facial feedback (i.e., afferent signals from facial muscles) can influence the interpretation of affective stimuli. One study tested the effect of overt smiling and frowning on the interpretation of short descriptions of everyday events. Smiling, as compared to frowning, led to more positive evaluations, but only for participants who were aware of the emotional relevance of their expressions. A second study tested whether subtle changes in facial activation (elicited by unconsciously presented happy/angry facial expressions) led to changes in evaluations of ambiguous target symbols. While angry prime faces, as compared to happy prime faces, induced more frowning (as measured via electromyography), this change in facial activation did not translate into a behavioural effect on subsequent evaluations. A third study investigated the relation between naturally occurring facial reactions and interpretations of both clearly valenced and ambiguous facial expressions. Results indicate that facial reactivity predicts participants' self-reports of their own emotional reactions towards others' expressions (Experiment 1). A relation between facial reactions and interpretations of the expression senders' emotional states was only found in cases in which participants with high sensitivity towards their own bodily states (as measured with a test of interoceptive accuracy) tried to interpret ambiguous expressions (Experiment 2). In a last experiment, prolonged presentation of emotional prime faces led to expression-congruent facial reactions, but resulted in expression-incongruent behavioural reactions in both classification speed and interpretative tendency of emotional target faces. Overall, this thesis suggests that facial feedback is not generally involved in the interpretation of affective stimuli, but that it might contribute to evaluative processes only under special circumstances.

The nature and function of human nonverbal vocalisations

Raine, Jordan January 2018 (has links)
Though human nonverbal vocalisations are widespread, scientific consideration of their mechanisms and communicative functions has been largely overlooked. This is despite their close alignment with the vocal communicative systems of primates and other mammals, whose primary function is to signal indexical information relevant to sexual and natural selection processes. In this thesis, I examine human nonverbal vocalisations from an evolutionary perspective, with the central hypothesis that they are functionally and structurally homologous to nonhuman mammal calls, communicating evolutionarily relevant indexical information that is perceived and utilised by listeners. In Chapter 1, I introduce the methodological framework (source-filter theory) necessary to understand the production of vocal signals in mammals, before summarising the information contained within the acoustic structure of nonhuman mammals and human speech, and the effects these cues have on both vocaliser and listener. I then examine the current evidence for functional and structural homology between human and nonhuman nonverbal vocalisations. In Chapters 2 to 5, I quantitatively analyse the acoustic structure of a number of nonverbal vocalisations, and perform playback experiments to examine their functional effects on listeners. In Chapters 2 and 3, I investigate whether aggressive roars and distress screams communicate acoustic cues to absolute and relative strength and height. In Chapter 4, I analyse the acoustic structure of pain cries of varying intensity, and conduct playback experiments to explore the acoustic and perceptual correlates of pain. In Chapter 5, I examine whether the fundamental frequency of tennis grunts produced during professional tennis matches is dependent on the sex and body posture of the vocaliser, as well as the progress and outcome of the contest, and whether listeners can infer these cues. In Chapter 6, I tie these findings together, arguing that the acoustic structure of human nonverbal vocalisations, in continuity with nonhuman mammal vocalisations, has been selected to support the functional communication of indexical and motivational information.

SHYNESS IN THE CLASSROOM: A STUDY IN NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION CODES

Radway, Nora E. 01 January 2019 (has links)
This study examined the experiences of shy, introverted, and apprehensive students in the college classroom. This study was framed by multiple goals theory to discover how these students use nonverbal communication to achieve their task, identity, and relational goals in the classroom. Shy, introverted, and apprehensive students face challenges in the classroom especially when asked to verbally participate or give presentations that their more outgoing classmates may not face. Participants (N = 16) participated in focus groups where they discussed their experiences, perceptions, and feelings about participation in their college courses. Results showed that these students do experience apprehension in communication situations, often avoiding participation when possible, and that they do use nonverbal communication to meet their task, identity, and relational goals in the classroom. Implications for theory and for both students and instructors, limitations, and future directions for research are discussed.

Unicefs tysta kommunikation som för barnens talan : En kvalitativ studie om icke-verbal kommunikation i en hjälporganisation / Unicef´s silent communication for the children's action. : A qualitative study of non-verbal communication in a Relief

Raaegaard, Emelie January 2009 (has links)
<p>My study is focused on one organization with is Unicef, the organization that is workning on a UN mission. The mission is about children's rights and Unicef has brought children's actions since 1946.The purpose of this essay was to research whether the images can be used alone or as a complement to the text that the communication organizations use. By examining the way images are used, I hoped to be able to deduce the results of image use. I study if the effect out messages with only pictures will be more effective than the message in which the verbal mixed with the non-verbal.Theoretical part of this essay has a communication perspective. The essay is structure by tree elements, non-verbal communication, mass communication and intercultural communication. With these elements, or keywords, have I interpret UNICEFs communications through two media channels, internet and TV.The methodology I have chosen is qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach. I have carried out three qualitative interviews with women within the organization and one group interview consisting of four persons. I have also observation a qualitative media observation of charity gala on TV4.     My conclusions were that non-verbal communication is most likely more effective as a tool too the verbal instead of the only communication. I also got the conclusion that UNICEF communicate with people thought picture that’s gives hope for the future.</p>
