Cattle Rustling and Its Effects among Three Communities (Dinka, Murle and Nuer) in Jonglei State, South SudanManyok, Phillip T. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Inter-tribal clashes have emerged to be one of the biggest contributors to rampant insecurity witnessed in South Sudan and in Jonglei state the clashes revolve around cattle rustling. Efforts to quell the violence from government, the international community, religious movements, and other South Sudan national organizations have not yielded significant fruit yet. This qualitative case study research explores the underlying manifestation of the conflicts among three communities Nuer, Murle and Dinka, who live in Jonglei. The main objective was to explore the changing context of cattle rustling and understand the effects of conflicts related to cattle raiding in Jonglei. The approach of the dissertation is unique in that it examines both historical and current trends in cattle rustling to create a better understanding of the conflict situation. The dissertation focuses on Jonglei state because it has produced the highest number of conflicts related to cattle raiding.

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study alms to compare ancient Israelite (Old Testament) prophecy with
Nuer prophecy within its respective religious contexts, to detect the differences
and similarities.
The most important differences between Israelite (Old Testament) and Nuer
prophecy are:
• Israelite prophecy presupposes monotheism while Nuer prophecy
functions within a polytheistic rei igious context.
• Nuer understanding of creation is far less explicit than the Israelite
accounts of creation in Genesis 1 and 2.
In explaining the reasons for the dissimilarities between Israelite (Old Testament)
and Nuer prophecy, reference was made to the difference in geographical
location, cultural and societal context.
Among the more important similarities between Israelite (Old Testament) and
Nuer prophecy are the points of view related to sin and sacrifice, as well as the
distinction between true and false prophets and the role of prophets in society. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie beoog om In vergelyking te tref tussen anti eke Israelitiese (Ou

Srovnání vybraných antropologických škol z hlediska jejich pragmatické hodnoty / A comparison of selected anthropological theories in view of their pragmatic valueHájek, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
The study deals with the problem of applicability of two anthropological theories, structural functionalism and interpretive anthropology of Clifford Geertz. By applicability is meant what concrete difference using of one or the other theory brings about in ethnography. Each of the theories is at first thoroughly examined with emphasis on its possible aims, assumptions, and consequences for an ethnographer. Then each theory is put to test in examination of one particular ethnography associated with the theory. Evans-Pritchard's The Nuer serves as an instance of structural functionalism. Clifford Geertz's Negara as an example of interpretative analysis. Structural functionalism is shown to provide an ethnographer with a much more definite guidance which contributes to better possibilities of verification and comparability of the results than interpretive anthropology. Apart from the main subject, the study is concerned with more general questions, especially related to non-existence of a paradigm in anthropology and some of its causes.

En postkolonial konflikt : En studie om hur konflikten i Sydsudan kan ses som en kolonial konsekvens / A postcolonial conflict : A study on the impact of the conflict in South Sudan can be seen as a colonial consequenceKällroos, Dennis January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis constitutes a review of literature from a post-colonial perspective to analyze the current conflict in south Sudan between the ethnic groups, the Nuer and the Dinka. The method used in this work is qualitative, with elements of hermeneutics. The work is based on the theories of postcolonial theory and the ethnicity and assumes the thesis of the grooves of the colonial era are also found in south Sudan and in particular by the ethnic groups that today live in the country. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the role of the colonial times have been, in the question of how the ethnic pattern looks in today's south Sudan, but also find out how the emergence of the current conflict in the country can be seen as a colonial consequence. The result shows that colonialism had a major impact on the population in the southern region and by the policy, the oppression and the new ranking structures in south Sudan strengthened the hatred between the ethnic groups and the conflict between the Nuer and Dinka could live on.
