Thus, the author navigates through the formation of these organizations in Brazil with the intent to demonstrate the bureaucratic organizational culture and the consequent form of domination of those who detain power. In this epistemological construction, the author explores the culture s bureaucratic environment and the organizational power. In the analyses, it was observed the technological phenomenon in the ODL s administrative environment, which can explain the adherence procedure to structures and technological instruments for stricto sensu courses that, hypothetically, dilutes the traditional inherited organizational axiom. Therefore, it was utilized as object of study the Professional Master s degree in National Scale Public Administration PROFIAP, hence analyzing the documental content and the legislation related to institutionalization as well as the positioning of professors/coordinators and of the director of CAPES/MEC. Considering this axioms, it was concluded that the bureaucratic structures can admit ODL in the stricto sensu s environment. However, this can only be done as long as the adherence does not imply in a dilution of the traditional forms of power and institutional bureaucratic inherited dominance, as well as the alleged hegemony of the governmental structure in the educational administration adopted in person by the stricto sensu courses in Brazil / O estudo aborda as estruturas organizacionais burocr?ticas, a fim de compreender a forma da ades?o ?s tecnologias virtuais no processo administrativo-educacional para o stricto sensu.

An exploration of psychological grit as a predictor of student retention in an open distance learning (ODL) institution

Young, Kelly Anne 08 1900 (has links)
This research study explored the predictive value of psychological grit in determining student retention among postgraduates in an Open Distance Learning (ODL) institution in South Africa. Working from within a quantitative framework (and adopting a correlational research design), an online version of the Grit-S scale was utilised to gauge participants’ levels of grit (n = 837), followed by one-year lagged secondary data which sought to ascertain retention among the sample. Seeking to explore the psychometric rigour of the Grit-S scale, exploratory and partial confirmatory factor analyses were employed to investigate the validity of the instrument, followed by the assessment of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Thereafter, correlations and binary logistic regressions were employed to investigate the relationship between the constructs and explore grit’s ability to predict retention from one academic period to the next. Results from the analyses indicated that, while the Grit-S scale demonstrates sound validity and reliability for use within ODL settings, grit was neither related to retention nor could it significantly predict retention among the current sample. Although these results do not negate grit’s reported role in determining successful student outcomes in traditional higher education settings, they bring to the fore a need to critically re-examine grit’s contribution to understanding retention, not only among ODL students, but among those whose socio-economic circumstances remain a crucial barrier. As such, pre- emptive strategies aimed at retaining students should rather focus on mitigating the immediate, and often negative, socio-economic circumstances faced by students, rather than intervening based on their levels of psychological grit. / Psychology / D. Online learning through the use of information and communication technology (ICT) features in institutions of higher education globally. If integrated successfully online learning holds many benefits. Research however has highlighted that the focus of online learning is often on the technology, while pedagogical considerations are neglected. As such online learning has not yielded significant changes from a pedagogical perspective. The impetus of this study was driven by the need to find approaches of integrating pedagogically sound online learning in distance education (DE). The study employed a case study research design, and was qualitative in nature. Questionnaires, interviews and documents informed the case study. The findings of the study reveal that online learning should be purposefully planned. In light of the findings, the study presents a framework for the integration of online learning in DE. The framework is built on the concept of awareness and argues that online learning should depart from three types of awareness, i.e. lecturer, student and institutional. The framework is entrenched in theory from both DE and online learning and offers direction for stakeholders at various levels of DE higher education institutions in terms of integrating online learning. Lecturers' utilisation of institutional learning management systems in an ODL higher education institution in South Africa

Gani, Faiza 04 1900 (has links)
In the world in which we live today, information and communication technology (ICT) has proliferated in all spheres of society, including in the corporate, social and academic arenas. Within these arenas ICT has made noteworthy contributions. In the academic space, which is the focus of this study, ICT has made a significant contribution to the communication and consultation between students and higher education institution staff. One such example has been the emergence of learning management systems (LMSs) in higher education institutions, both locally and globally, with LMSs providing higher education institutions with several possibilities as regards facilitating the online teaching and learning process. Nevertheless, research has shown that there is underutilisation of LMSs throughout the world. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the utilisation of LMSs in an open and distance learning (ODL) institution in South Africa to ascertain whether they are being used to their full potential.

Casimir, Grégory 07 1900 (has links)
This Master’s thesis examines the contribution of Distance Learning through Broadcasting to the reduction of the failure rate at the first part of the High school diploma (Baccalauréat) examination in Haiti. Specifically, we wished to design this type of program with the objective to help all the candidates of the first part of the Baccalauréat (retho’s classes) to prepare for this exam. Several countries which have experienced similar situations as the one in Haiti have set up programs of Open Distance Learning (ODL) in order to complete the classic face-to-face mode of teaching and learning. In Haiti, Distance Learning is practically absent. The complexity of the situation requires the planning of diverse solutions to help the Haitian educational system out of its lethargy. If we cannot consider Distance learning as the only prospect, it is, on the other hand, relevant and desirable to envision it as an interesting alternative (Lubérisse, 2003). This study, centered on the qualitative approach allows us to collect data with twelve (12) key actors of the Haitian educational system (4 pupils, 3 parents, 2 professors and 3 specialists of the radio or Distance Learning by Broadcasting). Drawing on the main conditions of efficiency of Open Distance Learning (ODL) defined by Karsenti (2003), the theoretical principles of R and D (Van der Maren, 2003), the theoretical frame of Chagnon and Paquette’s needs assessment methodology (Centre Jeunesse de Montréal - Institut universitaire, 2005) and of Roegiers, Wouters and Gerard (1992), we outlined the proposed Distance Learning through Broadcasting program and submitted it twelve (12) key actors of Haiti’s educational system (4 students, 3 parents, 2 teachers, and 3 radio or DLBR experts). This sketch contained mainly, the objectives of the program, the pedagogical approach, the contents and the conditions of implementation. The analysis of data generated through individual interviews shows that implementing such a program can be advantageous for the Haitian educational system, particularly as regards the results of the official examinations of the first part of the High school diploma (first part of the Baccalauréat). The twelve (12) participants in our research believe that the objective pursued by the program of Distance learning is achievable and important for the targeted public. While noting the positive aspect of this project, the participants suggested some modifications of the pedagogical approach, the contents and the conditions of implementation. The recommendations made by these twelve key actors of the educational system and our literature review allowed us to produce a new draft of the program outline, revised and corrected. This draft can be used as the basis for a wider evaluation.

FOAD et Compétences : Influence d’un dispositif FOAD sur l’acquisition des compétences dans le cadre d’une formation d’auxiliaire de puériculture / ODL and skills : Influence of an ODL system on the acquisition of skills as part of a childcare assistant training

Plateau, Jean-François 15 June 2018 (has links)
This research began with astonishment regarding a unique situation: although open distance learning (ODL) is rarely used to train health and social workers, a pioneering institution has trained nursery assistants through to graduation since 2015. Academic results, validating the skills of the first cohort, proved to be better than those of the students in classrooms, which contradicts the "no significant difference" theory (Russel, 1999). The exploratory phase, based on observation and the semi-directive interviews of twelve learners, trainers, technical, pedagogical and administrative staff, made it possible to identify the presence of active ingredients for learning in this course. This exploratory phase, set up to examine the concepts of skills and ODL, highlighted the influence of the latter on autonomy and emotions. A series of hypotheses thus emerged, suggesting that the distance learning had a significant impact on the acquisition of academic, transferrable and emotional skills as well as on feelings of competence, support and self-efficacy. These were tested for in two successive cohorts of childcare auxiliaries, 26 of whom were registered in ODL and 79 in the face-to-face programme. The significant difference in academic results observed between the two modalities with the first cohort was not repeated with the second. The feelings of competence and learner support are stronger among the students in ODL, but not those of self-efficacy during placement. The perception that ODL learners have of the impact of their learning modality on their transferrable skills is also more pronounced. The emotional competence quotient is higher for those who chose e-learning. This study concludes with some reflections induced by modeling this mediatised integrative professionaltraining programme.

Tutors’ perceptions of effective facilitation through the use of an integrated tutor model (ITM) in an open and distance learning (ODL) environment

Ntuli, Cynthia Hlekwase Smangele 02 1900 (has links)
Facilitation of learning through the use of tutors is a worldwide approach that is supported by most Open and Distance Learning institutions. This approach was expanded by integrating face-to-face mode of delivery and online delivery with the purpose of increasing access and participation of students at Unisa. However, the practicality of this integration cannot be overlooked and this reality led to this study. Given the background, this dissertation presents a study on tutors’ perceptions of effective facilitation through the use of an integrated tutor model (ITM) in an Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment. This study sought to explore the views of Unisa tutors focusing on the success factors, challenges and the impact this model has on tutors’ behaviour in terms of tutorial delivery in the implementation of the integrated tutor model in tutorial classes. This was done with an aim of expanding access and participation. A qualitative research method was conducted with Unisa Gauteng Region tutors. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews. The findings of the study showed that the level of academic staff involvement in the tutorial program is very low and there was no involvement at all in other colleges. The training and development provided to ODL tutors is highly appreciated by tutors, however, it needs to be intensified to yield the desired outcomes. Findings further revealed that the institution needs to attend to the provision of access to students. Based on these findings, recommendations were made that academic staff members need to increase their level of involvement in the tutorial program in order to support tutors who provide support to students. Practical training of tutors on the use of technology is necessary and the institution must increase access to computers and the internet for students. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.
