Performing "Hurt" : Aging, Disability, and Popular Music as Mediated Product and Lived-Experience in Johnny Cash's Final Recordings

Davidson, Adam 22 March 2018 (has links)
Sitting at a rarely examined intersection between aging, disability, and popular culture, this project explores how the aging body becomes the disabled body in the context of popular music. In what follows, I trouble the distinction between bodies and mediation, between lived-experience and cultural product, and I argue that the voice of the aging artist engages with his lived-experience even as he performs socially-constructed conceptions of aging and disability. I read Johnny Cash’s 2002 cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” on American IV: The Man Comes Around as a performance of the singer’s age and disabled condition. Through pain- saturated lyrics, music filled with unresolved tension, a damaged voice, and a video that puts his aged body on display, Cash performs a disability script that presents his age and personal health as disabling burden. I explore how country music, Cash’s performance past, and strategies pursued by his producer, Rick Rubin, all contribute to a performance that is both successful popular song and a manifestation of the singer’s declining condition. The project invites subsequent explorations of the intersection of age and disability in popular music, and highlights several artists whose voices and performances of old age and disability demand attention. The project aligns with an interactive approach to disability research, breaking down the dialectic between social and individual priorities in disability studies and foregrounding how each influence the overall performance.

Velhice e lazer : um olhar etnográfico para um projeto de idosos

Zabaleta, Ariane Silveira Dias January 2012 (has links)
In this study I set out to understand what old age means and how it is experienced within the Centro de Esporte, Lazer e Recreação do Idoso (CELARI), located in the Physical de Education School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. During the period between April and December of 2011 I developed an ethnographic incursion (participative observation, interviews and document analysis) in which I shared several moments of socializing such as physical activity workshops, social activities, meetings, tours and other everyday situations. After this long period of data production I proceeded to the examination of the obtained material, developed analytical categories and came to some interpretations. Those interpretations were presented in different topics/aspects/themes and helped me to provide answers to this study's questions. Such questions relate to the sense of belonging, the perspectives concerning body and health in that given context and the sociability logics supporting the social dynamics of that universe. On the sense of belonging I understood that experiencing old age at CELARI means to share a predominantly feminine environment where everyday relations are permeated by the sense of belonging. I noticed that the conception of elderly health goes beyond the biologic condition and relates to happiness, fun and feeling good in that context. I could realize that aspects like the preoccupation with the body and being in shape pervade the ageing process. Although this preoccupation focus predominantly on the body's utility dimension (health; autonomy) it also relates to the search of a beautiful body, which is also part of the participants objectives. CELARI is then a space that allows various forms of sociability and interaction among its participants, where the affective exchanges pervade the daily relationships and sometimes sustain participation in the project.

PREVENCE ÚRAZŮ U SENIORŮ / THE PREVENTION OF SENIORS´ INJURIES

NEDVĚDOVÁ, Jana January 2007 (has links)
The prevention of seniors´injuries The injuries of people at seniors age have become one of the serious issues of today´s medicine, presenting not only the health problem but also the social one. The most seniors´injuries associates with falls and slips. The second main cause for injuries are the traffic accidents, the next one following upon are the accidents, which happen often at home during the casual activities. The intoxication at the old age is not rare either. The prevention of the falls and potential injuries is based on reduction of hazards of accident occurrence. The prevention, which leads to continuing reduction of the accident rate at seniors age corresponds with the goal no. 5 that is stated in the World Hospital Organization {\clqq}Health 21`` Document. The chosen exploratory method was the quantitative sociologic research based on on-the-spot requiries by the use of question form. The research sample of population consisted from seniors from 65 years old up (130 correspondents) chosen randomly in the region of České Budějovice within the year 2005. The data were all compiled in the Organization For Injuries Preventions in South Bohemia software program. Seniors faced the health hazard and injuries mostly at homes, which are mostly caused by restriction in movements. The most casual ones are the falls. The protective instruments and equipment, which might reduce the injury risks (for example non-barrier entries, skidding devices, bars and so on) still are not the standards for seniors today. The knowledge and understanding the emergancy phone numbers is not sufficient either. The possibilities of prevention for seniors are various, but have not been much exploited yet. It seems the seniors should be firstly adressed by public health employees, which they are in casual contact with and they usually rely on. The topic of prevention of injuries should be also more discussed at education programs destined for seniors.

Envelhecimento demográfico e mudanças na transição à velhice entre brasileiros de distintas gerações / Demographic aging and changes in transition to old age among Brazilians of different generations

As part of the demographic transition, which includes substantial increase in longevity, the Brazilian population undergoes changes that reconfigure their age map and have repercussions on the society as a whole. Within this scenario of an aging population, the focus of this work is to understand the changes experienced by different generations as they reach the ages at which they are considered older people. The analysis focuses on three specific dimensions: the condition of the population on the domestic context, on labor market and on the relation to health conditions, focusing on the differences between men and women according to socioeconomic conditions. To this end, the theoretical approach used is the life course perspective. It proposes a conceptual framework that allows considering social change processes and demographic processes as interdependent. Thus, aging is understood as a process, by highlighting the intersection between change on individual biological time ¿ strongly demarcated by age ¿ with changes in historical time (focusing on political, economic, demographic and social dimension) and cohort succession. The main hypothesis is that older population is a heterogeneous group, and that heterogeneity has increased since the last decades, which diversify the experience of transition to old age. Added to that theoretical discussion, empirical analyses are built stressing the comparison between different cohorts. For that propose is used data from the demographic censuses of 1970, 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010 and entropy analyzes are performed with data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) of 1998 and 2008. Results indicate the importance of historical context ¿ and, within this, public policies ¿ in the demarcation of different living conditions between different generations, which contributes to the differentiation of the experience of aging and increases the heterogeneity of the elderly population / Doutorado / Demografia / Doutor em Demografia

A study on the influence of homoeopathically prepared Ginkgo Biloba 6X potency compared with that of phytotherapeutically prepared Ginkgo Biloba on the results of psychometric tests used to ascertain short term memory loss in the geriatric subject

McKechnie, Bronwen 12 August 2014 (has links)
M.Tech (Homoeopathy) / The aim of this study is to determine the influence of homoeopathically prepared Ginkgo Biloba 6X potency compared with that of phytotherapeutically prepared Ginkgo Biloba Extract; on the results of psychometric tests used to ascertain short-term memory loss in the geriatric subject. 21 elderly volunteers received; Ginkgo Biloba Extract (500mg), a homoeopathic 6X potency of Ginkgo Biloba and a placebo according to a double blind design. One hour after administration of the treatment, volunteers were subjected to psychometric testing namely the Reading Comprehension Test, which serves to assess the status of the short-term memory. No statistically significant changes from the placebo were observed in either of the groups. Adjusted scores for education and Mini Mental Status Exam scores however revealed a positive trend in favour of the homoeopathic 6X potency of Ginkgo Biloba Further evaluation with a larger study sample could provide more conclusive evidence as to its efficacy

"Things were better then": an ethnographic study of the violence of everyday life and remembrance of older people in the community of Belhar"

Cloete, Allanise January 2005 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This minithesis provides an ethnographic account of the life world of older people in the community of Belhar in the Cape Peninsula, which was historically categorised as a 'coloured' community during the implementation of the Group Areas Act. By content analysing newspaper articles published in the early 1980s and specifically during the implementation of the Group Areas Act I found that many of the residents reported that they lived in fear of their lives, in what was once known as a 'prestige suburb'. At the present time the community of Belhar is an intensely gang-infested area. From preliminary research done by myself at a senior citizen centre in Belhar, the high incidence of violence was a recurring theme throughout discussions with older people. In fact when I posed the question Why do you come to the centre five days a week? to a group of older people they answered without hesitation It is unsafe for an older person to be alone during the day. Answers like these to many of the questions that I posed would almost always be followed with Things were better then. It also was apparent that the older people in this community remember (or perhaps reconstruct) the past in the context of their present living situation. This became the leading theme in my study and is also the background against which I had formulated my research questions. However this study not only focused on the impact of the high incidence of violence on the community of older people but also essentially looked at elderly residents; everyday lived experiences in Belhar. The research sample consisted of twenty elderly residents and four key informants. The latter provided mainly infrastructural data on the community. Primary data was collected by using ethnographic techniques of inquiry which included participant observation and unstructured interviews. Results revealed that older people occupy a liminal space both in the community and in their households. I also found that the elderly stroke victim is twice silenced and marginalized due to the constraints brought on by their chronic illness and their status as an older person in the community. / South Africa

Housing needs and preferences among senior citizens (West Vancouver) : an exploratory survey of married and single pensioners, living in various types of accommodation, in West Vancouver, 1956-7

MacKinnon, Dolina F. January 1957 (has links)
Low-rent housing is only one item in the "welfare agenda" for the aged, but it is of fairly recent recognition compared with boarding homes, institutions, nursing care, et cetera. There are many causes of the heavy demand for self-contained accommodation for the able-bodied; but greater information on needs and preferences is also essential for wise planning. The present study is an exploratory sampling of the living arrangements and needs and preferences of able-bodied pensioners living in various types of accommodation in West Vancouver, a suburban community in which a small housing project has recently been built. For the purpose of this study, the individuals surveyed were divided into two groups: married couples, and single persons (women only, in the present instance). The survey was conducted by individual interviews, and some experimental questionnaires were developed. In the two main groups studied--married couples and "single" women--some significant differences were found between those who wished to remain in their present dwelling and those who wished to make a change which would be an improvement. The first group was composed mostly of homeowning couples, and single women living alone who had been in the same place for a number of years. The group who did not find their present living arrangements satisfactory was composed mostly of couples were were in rented accommodation, and single women who were living with married children. Within all groups there were many variations; but one problem which was common to all groups was insufficient financial resources. Most of those who rented accommodation were paying more than they could afford for rent. The homeowners, after paying taxes, had insufficient funds left for needed repairs and upkeep, and sometimes for necessities. Many older people were living apart from married children, although they wished to live close enough to permit visiting. Likewise, many single women who lived with married children, although their facilities were superior to those of single women living alone, nevertheless derived least satisfaction from their living arrangements. All of the older persons who wished to move regarded the accommodation in the West Vancouver Senior Citizens Housing Project as highly desirable. The main implications of the study include: the need for low-rental housing for older people; the possibilities for social work services in planning and to help the older person use the facilities when available; and the continuous relevance of public education and community organization. / Arts, Faculty of / Social Work, School of / Graduate

Effect of Loneliness on Older Adults' Death Anxiety

Pinson, Melissa Ward 08 1900 (has links)
Previous research, as well as theory, has supported the existence of a relationship between death anxiety and loneliness in older adults but a causal examination has not been possible until now. A hypothesized model was developed which states that loneliness will lead to death anxiety mediated by cultural worldview. Longitudinal data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling in order to more fully explore this potentially causal relationship. The primary model was supported suggesting that loneliness can lead to death anxiety as mediated by cultural worldview. Implications and future directions are discussed.
