Norbert Elias (2001) discussed the difficulty that our own body, so full of freshness and often pleasant sensations, can be slow, tired and clumsy. We cannot imagine it, and basically we do not want it. The fall followed by femoral fracture causes huge strangeness, an image in which the elder cannot identify himself, resulting in a disconnection between the image of the unconscious of the body and the image that the mirror gives him back. The objective of this study was to delineate the socio-demographic profile of 40 elders (31 females and 9 males) with femur fracture in surgical indication for pre operative phase, attended by the Service of Orthopedics of the Hospital of the State Public Servant of São Paulo (HSPESP). It is a cross-sectional observational study, and the data were collected through visits to files of medical records and semi-structured interviews, during the period of October 2010 to February 2011. All statistical analyzes were performed by SPSS for Windows, version 15.0. The age of the subjects studied ranged from 62 to 97 years old, with an average age equal to 78.9 years old, 77.5% were female, and 72.5% cared by a family caregiver. A factor of extreme relevance was that 97.5% of the subjects use more than 3 concomitant medicines daily. These and many others facts were raised with the intention of cross factors that reflect in the trial of human ageing. For the Gerontology, old age is to be understood by different looks. The social, cultural and subjective aspects permeate and intertwine in old age. With this study was possible to notice that a public health policy is necessary for that the rate of falls can be reduced by taking actions which are intended to give the elderly a better self-awareness of his body, and identify situations that can be harmful in relation to increase the risk of falls / A percepção sobre o corpo na velhice é muito particular para cada ser.

The aging workforce: impacts of emotion regulatory and SOC strategies on job performance of younger and older Chinese insurance sales workers. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and theses

January 2008 (has links)
Past studies showed that older workers maintained a high level of job performance despite declines in physical and cognitive abilities. The present research project aimed at examining the impacts of emotion regulatory and SOC (selection, optimization, and compensation) strategies in explaining how older workers manage to maintain a high level of job performance. Two studies were conducted to assess Chinese insurance sales workers' global and momentary employment of emotion regulatory and SOC strategies at work, and to compare the effectiveness of emotion regulatory and SOC strategies in predicting job performance for younger and older workers. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey study and consisted of 355 insurance sales workers. Results showed that older adults reported higher employment of elective selection and optimization than did younger workers. Older workers' employment of elective selection and compensation, as well as suppression, was associated with higher job performance, however such association was not found among younger workers. Study 2 was a five-day experience sampling study. It consisted of 87 participants who carried a handheld computer that recorded their momentary employment of emotion regulatory and SOC strategies during their work. Results of the multilevel analyses revealed that older and younger workers varied in their use of cognitive reappraisal, elective selection, and loss-based selection across work-related situations with different levels of task difficulty. Older workers' greater use of the four SOC strategies and suppression in the sampling period was predictive of the post-sampling increase in sales commission. Among these strategies, elective selection contributed the most to the increase in insurance sales among older workers even after accounting for the impact of other strategies. Findings from this research project contribute to the understanding of Chinese workers' psychological adaptation in the face of age-related declines in cognitive abilities. They also revealed cultural differences in the effectiveness of emotion regulatory strategies in predicting job performance of older and younger workers. Moreover, these findings shed light on the types of recommendations that should be given to employers for modifying organizational policies and implementing appropriate training and development programs, to meet with the needs of the aging workforce. / Yeung, Yuen Lan Dannii. / Adviser: Helene H. The effects of gender and impairment on social contact and leisure activities of community elders

LaPorte, Kenna Lee January 1992 (has links)
Older Americans will comprise 22.9% of the population by the year 2050 (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1989). The literature has focused attention on the informal networks and leisure activities of the older adult. Most older adults have an effective network of close relationships with family and friends.Schein (1985) suggests that impaired hearing reduces communication resulting in social withdrawal and diminished participation in leisure activities. Only recently has research addressed the impact of subjective memory impairment. The literature on self-reported memory complaints and objective measures of performance are mixed. The purpose of this study was to better understand the role self-reported hearing impairment and memory impairment have on the social contact and leisure activities of community adults. Results indicate that gender is a significant indicator of social contact. The hypothesis that individuals reporting memory difficulties would differ significantly in social contact and leisure activities from unimpaired individuals was supported. No significant multivariate effect appeared for hearing on social contact or leisure activities. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services

Stěhování seniorů do domova pro seniory jako krizová životní událost / Moving of seniors to home for the elderly as a crisis life event

HORVÁTHOVÁ, Jaroslava January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the issue of old age and aging. It is dedicated to moving of a senior to a home for elderly. Aim of the thesis was to determine whether elderly people see moving to a home for elderly as a life crisis event. This thesis consists of two parts - theoretical and practical. Theoretical part lists and clarifies principal topics that blend together at the thesis. Those topics are old age, aging, life in old age, life crises and possible solutions of them. It is dedicated to the process of aging and its aspects, defines the concept of old age and delimits various forms of old age. It explains the term senior and lists specifics of senior age such as specific needs of seniors and life changes of seniors. It focuses more thoroughly on housing of seniors and the process of moving of seniors into a residential facility. It defines the concept of a crisis, introduces a typology of crises and describes crises situations and their solutions.Practical part of the thesis consists of a research. Strategy of a quantitative research, method of questioning and technique of a questionnaire has been chosen with respect to the topic. The data have been acquired by means of a questionnaire of my own construction. The questionnaire consists of 25 research questions in total. The research file consisted of 119 respondents. The data are statistically evaluated and the results are depicted by means of tables and charts. The results of the research suggest that one third of seniors deems moving to the home for elderly to be a crisis life event. Perception of moving as a crisis event is not connected to sex, age, education and is connected to marital status. This thesis points out how demanding the process of moving to a residential facility is for seniors. The results can be used as a base for future research of the topic, they can be used as an educational material and can be beneficial for staff of homes for elderly and families of seniors.

I have also described the seniors of risks seniors and the basic terms with which we can meet in the senior's issue. The aim of the work was to find out what activities are seniors doing in their free time and whether their leisure time is sufficiently fulfilled. I also wanted to compare the hobbies of seniors from small and big cities. I learned from my research how todays seniors spend free time and what are the obstacles on spending their free time.

Three essays on retirement and savings behaviour

Nunes, Bernardo F. January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation presents three essays on retirement and savings behaviour. It relies on secondary data from British national surveys to empirically address how workers prepare and adapt to the economic circumstances of later life. Chapter 1 analyses the effectiveness of providing workers with the opportunity to join workplace pension schemes to stimulate pension savings. It estimates the potential opt-in rate among employees who haven’t been offered a pension plan by an employer, had they been offered the opportunity to join a scheme. Governmental policies enforcing pension plan provision at every workplace could generate a major impact on aggregate participation rates. This potential success does not seem to be conditional on the existence of mechanisms imposed by law concerning the way workers are enrolled. Chapter 2 examines the effect of workplace pension schemes provision and participation on other individual financial savings, such as personal pension plans and financial assets. It exploits the variability in workplace pension scheme provision and membership induced by the employer’s payroll size as an identification strategy. No evidence is found that providing employees with access to workplace pension schemes would make them less likely to save through non-pension financial instruments. These results support the enforcement of the universal provision of workplace pension schemes as a national policy to improve financial preparation for retirement. Chapter 3 builds on the literature of the economic role of home production of goods and services at retirement. The literature usually restricts the explanation of retirees’ heterogeneous attitudes towards home production to gender differences or social norms related to couples’ division of labour. The present study provides novel evidence that non-cognitive skills in the form of personality traits explain the heterogeneous reallocation of time and consumption that occurs during a transition from the labour market to retirement.
