Ecological Responses of Lake Eola to Urban Runoff

Harper, Harvey H., III 01 October 1979 (has links) (PDF)
Lake Eola is a land-locked lake located in downtown Orlando, Florida. Its surface area is approximately 27.0 acres (11.0 Ha) and water depth is 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) near the shore and 22 feet (6.7 meters) toward the center. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake and storm drains for various stormwater events and physiochemical parameters were analyzed to calculated loading rates from nutrients and heavy metals released to Lake Eola. Algal bioassay studies were performed to investigate stormwater impacts on productivity. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake mixed and filtered for limiting nutrient studies using various concentrations of N, P, and Fe. Unialgal species of Selenastrum, Chlorella and indigenous species were used and changes in chlorophyll "a" and biomass were measured. Results indicate that phosphorus or nitrogen can be limiting at some times of the year. However, the ratio of P:N can be ore important than actual concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen separately. Similar algal bioassays were performed on a mixture of stormwater, coagulated stormwater and lake water at different ratios.

A Proximity Vehicle Locator System

Thompson, Bradley Everett 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the design, construction and operation of the proximity vehicle locator system prototype developed for the Orlando Police Department. The objective of the project itself was to provide the O.P.D. with a simple but effective system by which constant surveillance of patrol car locations could be maintained, thus improving the department's operational efficiency. Each unit designed specifically for use in this project will be discussed in some detail, while those purchased locally for use in the project will be only briefly described, as pertaining to their functional importance to the system. In addition, some of the problems encountered in the realization of the system as a working model will also be briefly recounted.

"Poder colonial e literatura: as veredas da colonização portuguesa na ficção de Castro Soromenho e Orlando da Costa"

Vale, Regina Célia Fortuna do 11 March 2005 (has links)
This work presents analyses of the novels A Chaga (1970), by the Angolan author Fernando Monteiro de Castro Soromenho, born in Vila de Chinde (Zambezia, Mozambique), and O Último Olhar de Manú Miranda (2000), by the Goan writer Orlando da Costa, born in Lourenço Marques — currently Maputo (Mozambique). Our proposal for a comparative analysis derives from the presupposition that these two literary creations of the recent historical past of both Angola (Camaxilo) and Goa (Margão), when taken in their contexts of ex-Portuguese colonies, points to confluent perspectives, in accordance with the critical view of history we have attempted to establish. For we tried to take into account the indispensable dialectic relationship that art and society keep between one another. Nevertheless, the identification of the two respective novels as Neo-Realism and Marvelous Realism was evidenced by their distinct poetic pressupositions.

An expert in missions and pastoral theology from Puerto Rico, Costas elaborated a pastoral method and methodology based on his evangelical, religious confession in ecumenical dialogue and in critical consonance with the political, economical, social and religious circumstances of Puerto Rico and Latin America. Costas, together with Emilio Castro, were the first theologians to offer the basis for an evangelic pastoral vision based on the experiences of Latin American people. He criticized North-Atlantic pastoral theology as a pastoral action centered on the pastor, which was professionally and ecclesiastically centered. The research is presented in three chapters. The first chapter presents the religious, social, economic and political context of the experience of Orlando Costas in Puerto Rico; the second deals with his conversion experience in the context of his religious tradition, and; the third presents his pastoral proposal, and analyses its theological and historical development, emphasizing the conferences, movements, institutions, and theologians who influenced Costas thought. It also demonstrates the vision of mission and theological basis for his evangelic pastoral. It demonstrates that Costas pastoral is missiological and pastoral, because it assumes the missi Dei as an architectonic principle and the pastoral as a hermeneutic principle for pastoral and mission action. The research concludes that Costas pastoral proposal is evangelic and ecumenical, contextual and autochthonous, both within and beyond the church.(AU) / Nesta pesquisa se propõe analisar a pastoral evangélica latino-americana elaborada por Orlando Costas.

Evaluation of Various Mass Transportation Alternatives for the University of Central Florida Commuters

Niroumand-Rahimi, Jamal 01 July 1980 (has links) (PDF)
This research evaluated various mass transportation alternatives for the commuting students, faculty and staff of the University of Central Florida (U.C.F.), located at Orlando. The alternatives considered in this research are bus service, van service / minibus service, vanpool, carpool, and bicycle and pedestrian modes. During the life-time of the University the private automobile has been the only prevalent mode of transportation used by the U.C.F. commuters. Opinion surveys conducted in the summer of 1979 indicated that the U.C.F. commuters are confronted with a number of transportation problems including lack of parking spaces on campus, traffic congestion on the access roads to the University and the high cost of commuting using automobiles. Other surveys which were required for the evaluation process were taken during the same academic year. these included location survey, traffic study, intersection delay study, and parking study. Based on the results of these surveys the different transportation modes considered feasible in this situation are analyzed. According to the results of the comparative cost analysis, using present-worth and equivalent uniform annual cost methods, all the candidate modes were found to be economically advantageous over the existing auto transportation mode. However, with the existing rate of auto ownership by the commuters, the carpool program could e considered as the most realistic solution to the short-term transportation problems of the University, provided the legal obstacles are overcome before the implementation of the program. The feasibility and legal considerations of the various modes are discussed in the closing chapter of this report.

'Il fior de Pagania' : Saracens and their world in Boiardo and Ariosto

Pavlova, Maria January 2014 (has links)
This study investigates the representation of Saracens in Boiardo's Inamoramento de Orlando and Ariosto's Orlando furioso, a subject that has attracted growing scholarly interest in recent years. Chapter I assesses the degree of realism in Boiardo's and Ariosto's portrayal of Islam and Islamic culture and locates the two poems in their historical context. Bringing to light unpublished archival material and other little-known historical sources, I argue that Boiardo and Ariosto drew inspiration from contemporary courtly culture which was characterised by openness towards the figure of the foreign prince. Chapter II explores Boiardo's engagement with earlier chivalric literature. It examines Boiardo's use of names and characters from earlier texts and evaluates the Saracens' contribution to the ideology that underpins the poem. It is shown that Saracens play an important role in promoting the ‘Arthurian’ chivalric ideals. Chapters III and IV analyse Ariosto's indebtedness to and departures from his predecessor, suggesting that there is a much greater continuity between the two Orlandos than is allowed by Cavallo and other scholars who are anxious to stress Ariosto's 'conservatism'. While chapter III is devoted to a wide-ranging analysis of the Saracen world in Ariosto, chapter IV deals with a topic that has recently generated much heated debate, namely the climactic confrontation between Rodomonte and Ruggiero and the ending of the Orlando furioso and how it should be understood, and I propose a new interpretation of the final canto by highlighting the concept of honour, a fundamental value for both Boiardo and Ariosto as well as for their early readers and for many chivalric authors alike. In my view, Rodomonte is the true winner of the duel. The significance of his 'moral' victory is examined in the study's final conclusion, where it is argued that it undermines Ariosto’s encomiastic project.

A percepção do lugar / The perception of place

Nhamona, Elídio Miguel Fernando 14 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation aims at showing how the perception of place manifests itself in Trajectórias e Clima, as well as in the poems O Diabo, Seara Nova and Mundo literário. If networks are established in the poetic enunciation, we are therefore in the presence of a poetics of relation. Through the themes, we compare and contrast Mendes poetry with O amanuense Belmiro - Cyro dos Anjos; Mensagem - Fernando Pessoa and Sangue Negro - Noémia de Sousa.
