Evaluation of Various Mass Transportation Alternatives for the University of Central Florida Commuters

Niroumand-Rahimi, Jamal 01 July 1980 (has links) (PDF)
This research evaluated various mass transportation alternatives for the commuting students, faculty and staff of the University of Central Florida (U.C.F.), located at Orlando. The alternatives considered in this research are bus service, van service / minibus service, vanpool, carpool, and bicycle and pedestrian modes. During the life-time of the University the private automobile has been the only prevalent mode of transportation used by the U.C.F. commuters. Opinion surveys conducted in the summer of 1979 indicated that the U.C.F. commuters are confronted with a number of transportation problems including lack of parking spaces on campus, traffic congestion on the access roads to the University and the high cost of commuting using automobiles. Other surveys which were required for the evaluation process were taken during the same academic year. these included location survey, traffic study, intersection delay study, and parking study. Based on the results of these surveys the different transportation modes considered feasible in this situation are analyzed. According to the results of the comparative cost analysis, using present-worth and equivalent uniform annual cost methods, all the candidate modes were found to be economically advantageous over the existing auto transportation mode. However, with the existing rate of auto ownership by the commuters, the carpool program could e considered as the most realistic solution to the short-term transportation problems of the University, provided the legal obstacles are overcome before the implementation of the program. The feasibility and legal considerations of the various modes are discussed in the closing chapter of this report.

'Il fior de Pagania' : Saracens and their world in Boiardo and Ariosto

Pavlova, Maria January 2014 (has links)
This study investigates the representation of Saracens in Boiardo's Inamoramento de Orlando and Ariosto's Orlando furioso, a subject that has attracted growing scholarly interest in recent years. Chapter I assesses the degree of realism in Boiardo's and Ariosto's portrayal of Islam and Islamic culture and locates the two poems in their historical context. Bringing to light unpublished archival material and other little-known historical sources, I argue that Boiardo and Ariosto drew inspiration from contemporary courtly culture which was characterised by openness towards the figure of the foreign prince. Chapter II explores Boiardo's engagement with earlier chivalric literature. It examines Boiardo's use of names and characters from earlier texts and evaluates the Saracens' contribution to the ideology that underpins the poem. It is shown that Saracens play an important role in promoting the ‘Arthurian’ chivalric ideals. Chapters III and IV analyse Ariosto's indebtedness to and departures from his predecessor, suggesting that there is a much greater continuity between the two Orlandos than is allowed by Cavallo and other scholars who are anxious to stress Ariosto's 'conservatism'. While chapter III is devoted to a wide-ranging analysis of the Saracen world in Ariosto, chapter IV deals with a topic that has recently generated much heated debate, namely the climactic confrontation between Rodomonte and Ruggiero and the ending of the Orlando furioso and how it should be understood, and I propose a new interpretation of the final canto by highlighting the concept of honour, a fundamental value for both Boiardo and Ariosto as well as for their early readers and for many chivalric authors alike. In my view, Rodomonte is the true winner of the duel. The significance of his 'moral' victory is examined in the study's final conclusion, where it is argued that it undermines Ariosto’s encomiastic project.

Orlando tells the story of an English nobleman who owns the gift of literary writing and lives for more than three hundred years, changing his sex, from male to female. The focus of our research is the translation of the main character, Orlando, from novel to film: we outlined some aspects of his/her personality to understand him/her actions throughout the novel/biography, and also considered some external aspects that complement or are part of his/her construction. Then, we submit the film character to the same process, to compare both. In order to do so, we started from a prior historical contextualization of the objects and their contexts of production. Our research is based on Itamar Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory (1978), the concept of translation as rewriting, by Andre Lefevere (2007), Antonio Candido’s study of the fictional character (2007), and Jacques Aumont’s studies about the aesthetics of cinema (1995). We do not intend to evaluate any of the objects (novel and movie), or to say that one is better than another. However, we aim to demonstrate what was the contribution of the character of the novel/biography to the construction of the film character, and to what extent the film character contributes and influences to the new readers of Woolf’s book. Primarily, we are aware that the construction of the character in the novel/biography is linked to two fundamental points: Vita Sackville-West, to whom the novel is dedicated, and the desire of freedom (intellectual and financial) to the writer, a relevant theme in Woolf’s speeches and writings of that decade. Sally Potter deals with her character’s immortality and freedom desire in a different way: her focus turns into implications of social and post-colonial issues, turning Orlando from an initial British identity to a more universal one. This research is sponsored by Fundação Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – FUNCAP.

DIRECTING THROUGH ANCIENT MOVEMENT: An Experiment Exploring Ancient Greek Choral Structures on the Modern Stage

Matthews, Laura S 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis outlines my research and creative process of how to direct modern theatre under the structure of the Ancient Greek chorus, specifically through movement. I include a brief history of how the chorus functioned in Ancient Greek theatre; how movement shaped the chorus’ role as well as the story for the audience. Using the parameters of the chorus, I directed two theatrical productions, Jason Robert Brown’s Parade, and Sarah Ruhl’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. Through exploration and analysis I conclude that using Ancient Greek choral movement in modern theatre helps to create a more specific story through gesture and space, bridges the gap between the audience and action onstage, and should be the foundation of how directing is taught in academic settings.
