Re-Thinking the Portable School: A New System for the Durham District School Board

Green, Jacqueline Darlene 19 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates strategies for the portable classroom as a way of envisioning a new model for elementary schools in the region of Durham, Ontario. The portable and the school configuration is informed by a set of rules determined by site and program, making each school building unique and suited for its particular context. Geometry and play are at the core of how children learn, and the architecture will implicitly and explicitly engage this sense of play and learning. The pieces making up the modules have an aesthetic similar to Lego and K’nex toys, which immediately engages the childrens’ imagination and understanding, creating both a playful and engaging environment for learning. The strategy also brings together a variety of geometric pieces that form different classroom types and which can reconfigure for different rooms and uses. As such, the students may understand how the modules stack and stagger to create unique interstitial spaces for the public and for informal learning. These modules can be reconfigured using interior components that create a variety of smaller environments within the larger classrooms. As well as for expansion and contraction of school populations, these components could be recycled for use by other schools with growing populations. Thus, changing the role of the portable into a malleable, moveable aggregate, and making it easier and therefore economical to add, transform and subtract classrooms and learning spaces, school buildings come to life and change along with their setting.

Laura Durand, Elizabeth Pamela, Durand Durand, Gabriela Briggitte 07 May 2020 (has links)
Introduction: Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic prevalences worldwide. One of the strategies proposed by the World Health Organization to reverse overweight and obesity, is to use frontal nutritional labeling. That is why, in 2018 in Peru the Manual of Advertising Warnings (MAW) was approved so that ultra-processed products carry in their packaging between 1-3 Octagonal Warnings (OW), as required. The MAP establishes two parameters. The first parameter entered into force in January 2019 and the second will enter into in September 2021. It should be noted that this study began in March 2018, that is, before the AO implementation went into effect. Objective: Determine the proportion of ultra-processed products that would declare at least one Octagonal Warning by September 2021, in compliance with Law N° 30021. Materials and Methods: Exploratory study in which 786 photographs of labels of ultra-processed products were analyzed. According to the nutrient profile of the Pan American Health Organization, it was classified into 10 categories. The nutritional content (energy, sugar, total fat, saturated fat and sodium) of the ultra-processed products was calculated in 100 grams or milliliters of product. The final parameters established in the MAP were used to evaluate the amount of OW that would be declared by ultra-processed products in case of not modifying their formulation for September 2021. Results: It was found that 88.1% of the ultra-processed products would carry at least one OW by September 2021. 46.2% would wear an OW, 38.2% would wear two OW, while 3.7% would declare the three OW. Of the ultra-processed products that would carry an OW, 80.7% would declare the phrase “HIGH IN SUGAR”, while of those that would take two OW, 65.6% would declare the phrases “HIGH IN SATURATED FATS” and “HIGH IN SUGAR”. Conclusions: The 88.1% of ultra-processed products would carry at least one OW by September 2021, in compliance with Law N°. 30021. / Tesis

Preferencia de etiquetado nutricional frontal: Octógono frente a Semáforo GDA en mercados de Lima, Perú / Traffic Light vs Octagon labelling preference in markets Lima, Perú

Espadín Alemán, Carlo César, Torres Ramos, Nancy Elisa, Valverde Aguilar, Mariana 01 June 2020 (has links)
Objective: To evaluate the preference of two designs of frontal labeling in industrialized products (octagon vs traffic light-GDA). Material and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study in market users of Metropolitan Lima (Chorrillos, Breña, La Victoria and La Molina). We used a previously validated survey that consisted of 4 questions: “Which of the products do you find most healthy?", "Why did you choose this one?", "Which of the two labels do you find easiest to understand?", and "Which of the two labeled do you like the most?". The data are presented in percentages and median (interquartile range) and the differences between the groups were evaluated with Fisher's exact test (categorical data). The data was analyzed in the Stata v15 program. Results: 93 users were surveyed, the traffic light-GDA was chosen as the healthiest label (74.3%) and the one they liked the most (69.9%); however, the octagon was the one that seemed easier to understand (58.4%). The majority of users considered the traffic light-GDA as healthier because it "has more green on the label". Conclusions: Participants mentioned that the octagon was simpler and easier to read; the green symbols of the traffic light-GDA could influence that the product is perceived as healthier. Which could confuse the purpose of the nutritional warning, minimizing the impact of the red and/or yellow symbol by having them in less quantity than these. / Trabajo de investigación

CMOS On-Chip 3D Inductor Design & Application in RF Bio-Sensing

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) inductors with square, hexagonal and octagonal geometries have been designed and simulated in ANSYS HFSS. The inductors have been designed on Silicon substrate with through-hole via with different width, spacing and thickness. Spice modeling has been done in Agilent ADS and comparison has been made with results of custom excel based calculator and HFSS simulation results. Single ended quality factor was measured as 12.97 and differential ended quality factor was measured as 15.96 at a maximum operational frequency of 3.65GHz. The single ended and differential inductance was measured as 2.98nH and 2.88nH respectively at this frequency. Based on results a symmetric octagonal inductor design has been recommended to be used for application in RF biosensing. A system design has been proposed based on use of this inductor and principle of inductive sensing using magnetic labeling. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2012

The octagon house in American culture : the influence of Orson S. Fowler in the Midwest

McCarley, Rebecca Lawin January 2001 (has links)
In the middle of the nineteenth century, an architectural phenomenon swept through the United States: the octagon house. Orson S. Fowler, best known for his work as a phrenologist, began this trend with the publication of A Home for All in 1848. Though this house form may seem unusual and even inexplicable today, the octagon house must be regarded in relation to the culture of this period. In this context, an understanding of the significance and embrace of this unique residential architecture can be gained. Although octagon houses were built throughout the United States, the intersection of several unique cultural and historical factors existed in the Midwest in this period, creating a region particularly receptive to this novel house form. The octagon house, though only briefly popular, made a lasting impact on the built environment that represents a tangible link to the culture of the middle of the nineteenth century. / Department of Architecture

Joly, Yohan 16 December 2011 (has links)
Electrical fluctuations of devices limit chip miniaturization. Despite manufacturing processes in continuous evolution, circuit performances are limited by electrical characteristics variations due to mismatch between two devices. Concerning low power applications, local fluctuations can become very critical. In the context of development of a 90nm CMOS technology with Embedded Flash memory for low power applications, MOS transistors matching is studied. A study of NMOS transistors gate doping impact is conducted. Study focuses on voltage matching of differential pairs biased under threshold. It is demonstrated that this matching can be degraded due to « hump » effect, meaning presence of parasitic devices on active edge. A macro-model allowing designers to model this effect is presented. It is studied at device level, circuit level and for different temperatures. Finally, a degradation study of MOS transistors mismatch under Hot Carriers Injection stress is performed, validating a degradation model. Octagonal devices are proposed to suppress « hump » effect and give good results in terms of matching as well as reliability.
