Estudo Experimental de um Dessalinizador TÃrmico com Aquecimento Controlado / Experimental Study of a Thermal Desalination with Controlled HeatingAnderson Pereira Rodrigues 15 March 2011 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Solar desalination systems operate with a transient heat source, the solar radiation, what makes it difficult to identify of the influence of the process variables and the constructive geometric parameters of the desalination tower. The present work presents the experimental study of thermal a desalination system prototype with heat recovery mechanism and controlled power supply to operate in transient and steady-state regimes. This prototype made possible the study of the operarational parameters that influence the desalinated water production in the tower, namely, the height of the water column in the storage tank, the type of burner, the gas natural gas flow, the number of desalination stages, and the use of a nano film of the condensations surface. Additionally,it was possible to thermally characterize the dessalination tower by determining the experimental overall heat transfer coeddicient (K1) of the simultaneous evaporation, radiation, and the convection processes between the surface of the water in the tank and the condensation walls of the first stage immediately above. The desalination system consisted of a gas natural burning equipment, a tank of storage, and a tower with six desalination stages. By controlling the natural gas flow, it was possible to keep preset and constant operating temperatures. The results showed that the use of the linear burner (ideal burner) and of 6 liters of water in the tank of storage presented the best desalinated water production. They alson showed that the flow of 0,533 g/min of natural gas and the use of 6 or 7 desalination stages are more adequate for tower operation. With the experimental measurements, the determination of the performance coefficient (COP) and of the gain output ratio (GOR) was possible. These values were 4,09 and 5,91, respectively. An increase of 65,59% in the desalinated water production was measured with the use of the nano film; however, chemical tests to verify possible chemical contamination were not carried out.

Development of a PP-MOCVD System and its Design and Operational Parameters for Uniform Industrial Coatings on 3D ObjectsLee, Darryl Liang Wee January 2014 (has links)
Increase in demand for uniform ceramic coatings on larger industrial components have led to a need for a PP-MOCVD coating system scale up. The objective of this thesis is to develop a fully functional coating system operating in the PP-MOCVD regime that is able to deposit thin film ceramic coatings on commercial or industrial components with complex 3D geometries.
This can be achieved by applying engineering and vacuum science theories, coupled with the established fundamentals of PP-MOCVD. A larger system was designed and assembled around the boundaries set by the dimensions and geometry of a stainless steel water pump impellor acting as the base substrate. Most of the components were sourced off the shelf from vacuum and fluid specialists. Components which were unavailable for various reasons were designed, and machined in-house by the departmental workshop.
Initial test depositions were conducted using small stainless steel disk substrates, heated using a resistive heater similar to the one utilised on the research scale system. The test depositions were performed with the heater and substrate combination placed in strategic locations. This is to test the overall uniformity of precursor flux in the chamber volume. The resulting coating uniformity on the disk surfaces were fair but problems such as the large collection of unreacted precursor on the chamber viewport and valve timing issues had to be addressed.
Before making any improvements to the system, each of the process areas leading to a successful deposition needed to be understood. Five process areas were developed: ‘Liquid Delivery’, ‘Atomization’, ‘Evaporation’, ‘Transport and Reactor Geometry’, and ‘Droplet Management’. Each of the process areas were analysed individually and changes were made to push for a maximum evaporation efficiency.
xviii
The improved system provided opportunities to perform depositions that were once not possible for PP-MOCVD. Two sets of deposition tests were designed and conducted. Firstly, the improvements were justified with a series of depositions using flat stainless steel plates with dimensions 65x65x5mm. The other set of 3D case study depositions involve observing the effects of the operational parameters of PP-MOCVD on the uniformity and penetration depths of the coatings into different sized macro blind trenches.
Five geometric setup conditions were used to justify the improvements made to the system. These are: ‘Substrate positioned in the direct line of spray’, ‘Use of an unheated receptor’, ‘Use of a heated receptor’, ‘Use of an unheated receptor with a non-axial substrate setup’, and “Choked Flow’. As expected, the uniformity of the coatings on both sides of the plate varied significantly when the substrate is placed over the line of sight of the precursor spray. Similarly, the coating produced under the induced choked flow condition resulted in low conformality. The introduction of an unheated receptor plate resulted in an increase in uniformity on both sides of the plate. Further prove that PP-MOCVD is geometry independent is provided by the deposition made with the non-axial substrate placement resulting in a coating of similar result to the unheated receptor. The use of a heated receptor provided a source for a secondary evaporation of the larger precursor droplets collected resulting in an increase in coating thickness while maintaining good conformality.
The effects of temperature, pressure, injection volume, and concentration were explored in the final case study. With maximum depths of 50mm, the macro blind trenches has an aspect ratio of 1:1 and cross-sectional areas of 3x3mm, 9x9mm, and 15x15mm. The final results show that as the temperature rises, the depth penetrated into the trench decreases. This could be due to the change in rate limiting steps as homogeneous reactions begin to increase at higher temperatures. Similar trends were observed with increasing pressure. As the pressure difference between the volume of the trenches and the rest of the chamber decreases, the push needed to
xix
force the precursor down the trench also decreases, resulting in less depth penetration. The effects of injection volume and concentration observed, can be explained by how much precursor molecules are present during one pulse cycle. The more that is available at any given time, the more likely a reaction will occur and deeper the penetration will get. Of course a ceiling or a limit exists where the molecules in the chamber will get evacuated without being reacted.
The future work made possible as a result of the scaled up system are proposed. These include a scale up of the operational parameters to suit any given substrate geometry, improvements to the heating source to achieve greater thermal uniformity, further improvements to the overall system accessibility, and performing other depositions using different substrate materials and precursor types.

Technical and economic feasibility of ethanol production in cashew apple juice from Saccharomyces cerevisiae flocculant / Viabilidade tÃcnica e econÃmica da produÃÃo de etanol a partir do suco de caju por Saccharomyces cerevisiae floculanteÃlvaro Daniel Teles Pinheiro 05 May 2015 (has links)
nÃo hà / Given the current situation in which it is the global energy sector, biofuels have been gaining more space, earning special attention the ethanol, which has shown growing demands. From this scenario, the objective of this work was to develop a bioprocess technically and economically practicable for ethanol production from cashew apple juice, using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CCA008) genetically modified containing a flocculent gene (FLO5α). The work was divided in 4 four stages that are linked throughout the study. In the first stage was evaluated the temperature influence (26, 30, 34, 38 and 42ÂC), the inoculum concentration (3, 5, 8 and 10 g.L-1) and the stirring speed (80, 150, 300, 490, 650 and 800 rpm), so it could be determined the best conditions to maximize ethanol production. It was observed that the temperature operating parameter, the initial cellular concentration, substrate concentration and stirring exerted influence on the alcoholic fermentation of the cashew apple juice. The best performance to the fermentative process (98,8 %) happened when the process was conducted at 34 ÂC, under 150 rpm stirring and 5 g.L-1 of initially cell concentration. The second stage was intended to describe the process efficiency in face of the operation parameters evaluated in fermentation. To this end, it was successfully used statistic models to describe the interaction between the initial substrate concentration, temperature, initial cell concentration, stirring and their possible effects on the yield. The model that best fit the experimental data was used to obtain the optimum conditions from the operating variables, indicating the following conditions as great: substrate concentration (S0) of 102 g.L-1, temperature (T) at 34ÂC, inoculum concentration (X0) of 5 g.L-1 and stirring (Agit) of 140 rpm, predicting a 98,80 % of efficiency. In the third stage was studied ethanol production in optimum conditions, being used to implement the scale up process, in which the data obtained in a 1L bioreactor batch were used to predict the fermentation behavior in a 14L bioreactor batch, using the volumetric power consumption as a parameter to scale-up. Using this factor as being of 10,67 kW/m3, it was possible to calculate the fermenter stirring power in a 14 times bigger volume, as well as foresee which stirring would be necessary so the fermentation can occur, similarly as in the lower volume fermenter. Results showed that yield from the 14L bioreactor were satisfactory, having a small difference (96,56 %  0,3 %) between yield from the 1L bioreactor (98,80 %  1,6 %). The fourth and last stage was rated the technical and economic viability of the process. Analyzing results, it is possible to say the industrial process here proponed has shown technical viability, since the value obtained for the process yield (68 L/ton), was close to sugar cane fermentation (61 â 72 L/ton). However, it did not show economic viability since the industrial unity provides negative cash flow (- R$ 93.840.874) in the end of 10 years that was analyzed. So, new studies must be conducted in order to make this process economically viable, this possibility being observed in various scenarios generated in analyzing the sensibility of process, which presents possible economically viable settings.

7 Schlussfolgerung und Ausblick...136 / A continuously rising demand for water, caused by increased population growth, growing urbanization and industrialization, accompanied by overuse of available water resources, is leading to a permanent drop in groundwater levels worldwide. In order to overcome the temporal imbalance between local water demand and availability and to mitigate the resulting negative effects, artificial groundwater recharge involves the managed enrichment or recharging of an aquifer. For this purpose, excess surface water is percolated or infiltrated under controlled conditions in order to make it available in times of water shortage or to improve the ecological boundary conditions.
However, the quantitative and qualitative efficiency of frequently used infiltration basins during the operation is often negatively influenced by a wide variety of processes (clogging, oxygen and nutrient transport), depending on the location (soil/climate/water quality) and the operating parameters (loading rate, loading cycle).
Investigations conducted to date on laboratory and field scale as well as data obtained during the operation of existing infiltration basins provide information on the influence of individual boundary conditions on the change in infiltration capacity or quantitative efficiency. However, not all open questions regarding the influence of site specific and operating parameters on the quantitative and qualitative efficiency of infiltration tanks can be answered completely and conclusively on the basis of these data. Due to aspects that have not been investigated and contradictory data, there are uncertainties in the evaluation regarding the influence of the individual site and operating parameters on the efficiency of the plants.
Laboratory tests using small-scale and large-scale physical models were carried out, in order to generate further knowledge about the influence of site specific and operating parameters on the efficiency of infiltration basins and to formulate subsequently recommendations for an optimised site selection and operation of these plants. Various infiltration scenarios were carried out under changing boundary conditions (soil type, temperature, water quality, hydraulic loading rate, hydraulic loading cycle).
Based on the data obtained, the influence on the quantitative and qualitative efficiency by the various site specific and operating parameters and the processes influenced by them can be demonstrated very well. The existing knowledge can be partially confirmed and extended by additional findings.
It shows that a higher hydraulic permeability of the existing soil causes a lower reduction of the infiltration capacity by clogging processes and provides also a better oxygen availability. Furthermore, it can be observed that soil textures with an average pore diameter of 230 µm offer optimal conditions for high biological activity combined with a strong degradation of infiltrated substances.
In case of higher temperatures but without solar radiation, an increased reduction of the infiltration capacity by clogging processes cannot be observed, since the flow of the infiltrated water is significantly influenced by the increased viscosity.
In the simulated infiltration scenarios, poorer water quality, synonymous with increased concentrations of filterable substances as well as dissolved organic carbon, cause a stronger reduction of the infiltration capacity. Physical clogging processes are contributing the major part to the reduction of the infiltration capacity.
Furthermore, it can be shown that an increased hydraulic loading rate leads to an increased reduction of the infiltration capacity and to a decreased oxygen availability.
The length of the infiltration and drying phases during the simulated operation of infiltration basins has a decisive influence on the reduction of the infiltration capacity and the oxygen availability. It is demonstrated that regardless of the length of the infiltration and drying phases, a complete restoration of oxygen availability can be guaranteed within 24 h following an infiltration phase. In contrast, the ratio of infiltration and dry phases, also known as the hydraulic loading cycle, has almost no influence on the quantitative efficiency.
Optimal conditions for a high quantitative and qualitative efficiency of infiltration basins can be identified, when considering all simulated infiltration scenarios including the interactions between the different site specific and operating parameters. These are given in the presence of a well-permeable soil (hydraulic conductivity > 10-4 m s-1), ideally with an average pore diameter of 230 µm, coupled with an intermittent infiltration of water of higher quality ((AFS ≤ 10 mg L-1, BDOC ≤ 10 mg L-1) and the prevention of infiltration phases longer than 24 h.
A reflection of the experimental results as well as a prediction of the reduction of the infiltration capacity with the selected analytical model according to Pedretti et al., 2012 is only conditionally possible due to the insufficiently implemented consideration of variable input parameters.
Recommendations for site selection and optimal operation were finally made on the basis of the data obtained and the resulting extended knowledge about the influence of site specific and operating parameters on the efficiency of infiltration basins.:1 Einleitung...1

Lösningar för regnvattenskörd för enbostadshus i Brikama / Rainwater harvesting solution for single residential houses in BrikamaNyassi, Sereh January 2023 (has links)
Gambia is the smallest country on the African mainland, surrounded by Senegal on all it's borders except the coastal one. Gambia faces a pressing issue with water supply shortages, along with more than one third of the world’s population. The aim of this study is to propose a system that will solve water supply shortage through a local water supply system. The method mainly consisted of a literature review, aimed to provide an overview of the subject as well as to highlight existing gaps within today’s research about rainwater harvesting systems. Furthermore, a case study was used to determine the best way to design the rainwater harvesting system. The results of the study are showcased through a tank and pipe system, where water is collected on the roof of the residential homes and stored in a polyethylene tank on the ground. The results from the survey, asking questions related to the inhabitants’ water usage habits, were analyzed and represented through a table. In Brikama rainwater can be used for laundry, cooking and watering plants. The positive effects it brings include, but are not limited to, reduction of soil erosion, restoring the ground water cycle, as well as making people become more self-sufficient. In this study, a system for Brikama can be optimized by using Solvatten technology in combination with conventional rainwater harvesting methods. The tank volume suggested by Mun and Han (2011) is a feasible premiss, however it can not be directly applied to Gambian rainwater conditions as there are differing presumptions between the reference country Korea, and Gambia. Additionally, the validity of the study is affected as the reference studies suggest using computer simulations, as well as computer models as a basis for the operational and input data.

Understanding particulate matter - Material analyses of real-life diesel particulate filters and correlation to vehicles’ operational data / Att förstå partiklar - Analyser av verkliga dieselpartikelfilter och korrelationer till fordonsdriftparametrarNordin, Linus January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of operational parameters on a number of measurable ash related numbers within diesel particle filters (DPFs) of heavy duty vehicles. Previous studies show that ash packing density, ash flow and how the ash is distributed inside a DPF is dependent on parameters such as temperature, exhaust flow profiles and how much oil a vehicle consumes. There is reason to believe that these parameters are also affected by how a vehicle is operated which is why different operational parameters were analysed for correlation with the measured ash numbers. The operational parameters that was investigated in this study was average speed, number of stops per 100 km, idling percentage and fuel consumption. The study started with method development of measuring ash weights of DPFs and compared three different methods, named I, II and III. Method II, which relies on weighing a piece of a filter substrate before and after cleaning the filter piece from ash with pressurized air was chosen as the most reliable and useful method as it was faster, needed less of each DPF to complete the analysis and could be used when analysing DPF samples that had not been investigated previous to its use in a vehicle. The ash weight, together with the volumetric filling degree and known inlet volume of the DPF was used to calculate the ash packing density. The filling degree and ash distribution profile was measured with an image analysis of microscope images of sawed cross sections of the filter piece. The correlation study was then performed with these methods and correlated with operational data extracted from databases at Scania CV. To study which parameters were correlated to each other a primal component analysis (PCA) was performed with the operational and measured variables as a matrix of data. The PCA analysis showed that three primal components made up >90 % of variation in the data and that plug/wall ratio, which is a numerical value of the ash distribution, was strongly positively correlated with average speed of a vehicle and negatively correlated with number of stops, idling percentage and fuel consumption. Furthermore, ash flow showed a slight positive correlation with idling percentage, number of stops and fuel consumption while oil consumption showed an even slighter correlation with these parameters. This indicates that the oil consumption cannot be taken as a constant value as percentage of fuel consumption when calculating service intervals of DPFs. The ash packing density showed none to very low correlation with any other variables in the study, which could depend on the fact that the DPFs with high percentage of wall ash had a significantly lower runtime which could mean that the ash has not had time to be packed tightly in the filter channels.

Previous issue date: 2008-12-15 / The increase in the generation of urban solid residues and the inadequate forms of treatment/disposition contribute directly with the environmental problem. In face of this situation comes the need of alternative options for the treatment of these residues, which guarantee other benefits, besides the obtained with the adequate final disposition. One of these options for the treatment of the organic fraction contained in the urban solid residues is the anaerobic digestion, which represents an attractive technology for the treatment of these residues, propitiating the transformation of the organic residue in products of aggregate value. In this context, this study aimed at to evaluate an alternative process of biodigestion for the treatment of organic domestic solid residues of the urban area. For reaching such a goal, it was firstly accomplished an environmental diagnosis aiming at the generation potential identification of the domestic residues, and at the same time it was developed a prototype for the alternative process of biodigestion. It was made the process operational parameters evaluation aiming at the optimization, through the accomplishment of a complete factorial planning, investigating the agitation effect, innocuous and water level, in the process kinetics and in the material conditions digested by the alternative process of anaerobic biodigestion, more specifically in the chemical quality of the biofertiliser, and also as complementary thing it was esteemed the application of this product generated by the corn and the soya cultivation. The results of the environmental diagnosis allowed determining a correlation for the generation potential of domestic residues estimate, as well as for the standardization of the organic fraction used in the experiment, enabling the composition reproduction of the real load in each experimental rehearsal. The proposed system for the treatment of the organic domestic solid residues was configured as an innovative method, and the experimental rehearsals accomplished in the real operation conditions, showed the influence of the analyzed parameters. Finally, the biofertiliser application estimate demonstrated the best revenues due to the application doses recommended for the corn culture and of the soya manuring.
