CONCEPT MAPPING: EFFECTS ON CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND ENGAGEMENT WITH CONTENT IN ELEMENTARY STUDENTS’ PERSUASIVE WRITING

Gardner, Melissa E. 01 January 2015 (has links)
This comparative pre-test/post-test quantitative study investigated the effect of an instructional strategy using concept mapping as a graphic organizer on the quality of persuasive writing compositions produced by fourth grade elementary school students. Six fourth grade classes were assigned as intact groups to three conditions: concept mapping treatment, four square treatment, and control. Participants wrote a pre-test essay prior to treatment. Treatment consisted of an instructional unit collaboratively developed by the researcher and classroom teachers on persuasive writing. Instruction for the three treatment groups was the same except for type of graphic organizer used (Concept Map, Four Square, or none). Following treatment, a post-test on persuasive writing was administered in the form of an essay. The concept mapping treatment group used concept mapping as their graphic organizer, the four square treatment group used the four square method, and the control group used no graphic organizer. Each of the pre- and post-test essays for both treatment and control groups were scored using rubrics created collaboratively by the researcher and participating teachers for Persuasive Content and for Engagement with Content. Only the concept mapping treatment group created concept maps during the post-test. Therefore, only the concept mapping treatment groups’ essays received a score for Sophistication of the Concept Map. One-way Analysis of Variance showed a significant mean difference in Persuasive Content and Engagement with Content between the three treatment groups. Concept Mapping had the highest mean scores on each, followed by Four Square and then the control. Pearson’s product-moment correlation showed a moderate positive correlation between Sophistication of Concept Map and both Persuasive Content and Engagement with Content. Positive correlations were also found between prior KCCT scores and persuasive writing scores and prior writing portfolio scores and persuasive writing scores. No significant correlation was found between gender and persuasive writing scores or race/ethnicity and persuasive writing scores. The results of this study indicate that Concept Mapping improves Persuasive Content and Engagement with Content when used as a graphic organizer in the writing of persuasive essays.

Evoluce vybraných karyotypových znaků u tetrapulmonátních pavoukovců / Evolution of selected karyotype characters in tetrapulmonate arachnids

Jílková, Klára January 2013 (has links)
The class Arachnida is not thoroughly explored from the cytogenetic point of view. Previous studies suggest a high diversity of karyotypes and sex determination in arachnids. This study deals with the evolution of sex chomosomes, nucleolar organizer regions (NOR), and telomeric repeats in the tetrapulmonate clade of arachnids, particularly in groups of ancient origin. Sex chromosomes were detected in two orders. Detection of NORs in a large set of species supports the hypothesis that the ancestral karyotype of arachnids contained NOR on one pair of autosomes only. The number of NORs has increased during the evolution of some groups of Pedipalpi. The NORs are located in terminal or subterminal chromosomal regions in most tetrapulmonates. The occurrence of the "insect" telomeric motif was confirmed in majority of tetrapulmonates. Interstitital telomeric repeats were not detected with the exception of one species. Keywords: arachnids, meiosis, sex chromosomes, telomeres, nucleolar organizer, heterochromatin

Avaliação da adesão à terapêutica medicamentosa de pacientes idosos hipertensos antes e após o desenvolvimento e uso de um Sistema Eletrônico de Uso Personalizado e Controlado de Medicamentos (SUPERMED) / Evaluation of adherence to drug therapy in elderly hypertensive patients before and after the development and the use of an Electronic System of Personal and Controlled Use of Medication (SUPERMED)

Vieira, Liliana Batista 20 December 2013 (has links)
O uso do SUPERMED melhorou a adesão medicamentosa e diminuiu os valores da pressão arterial, proporcionando ao idoso uma segurança e uma satisfação no que diz respeito à organização e à utilização correta de seus medicamentos / Considering that the arterial systemic hypertension has a high prevalence, low control taxes and that the risk to develop the disease increases with the aging, the objective of this study was to evaluate the adherence to the drug therapy in a group of elderly patients who have hypertension and are taken care of in a Basic Health Care Unit, in the country of São Paulo state, before and after the development and the utilization of an Electronic System of Personal and Controlled Use of Medication (SUPERMED). The study was almost experimental, prospective and comparative. 32 hypertensive elders were monitored, who used continually at least four different medications, in different periods: \"before the use of SUPERMED\", at \"the day that they started using it\" and \"after the use of SUPERMED\". To monitor the elderlies, the following SUPERMED resources were used: organizing medications boxes, identified with the suitable use time, the single dose pill packs and an alarm clock. The adherence was evaluated by the Morisky and Green Test, applied before and after the use of SUPERMED. During all the monitoring, the arterial pressure and the postprandial glycemia were controlled from the body mass index and the waist circumference. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee in Research from the College of Nursing from the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto and approval from the research participants was asked, followed by the signing of the Statement of Consent. All the analysis was conducted with a statistics software application and the Microsoft Excel program. The elders´ average age in the study was 71.4 years old (DP 5.6); the female gender had the prevalence (65.6%); 18.8% were illiterate; the diagnosis average of hypertension was 19.4% (DP 10.1) years and the average of drugs used per elder was 8. Besides the hypertension, 75% of the elders showed diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia rate was 75% and 59.4% were obese. After the use of SUPERMED, the systolic arterial pressure values\' average decreased in 21.6 mmHg (p<0.0001) and the diastolic arterial pressure in 4.7 mmHg (p<0.0001). The Morisky and Green Test results showed a low adherence before SUPERMED was implanted, where 81.2% of the elders were considered \"less adherent\". After it was implanted, 96.9% were considered \"more adherent\" (p<0.01). The use of SUPERMED improved the medication adherence and decreased the arterial pressure values, providing the elders with safety and satisfaction about the organization and the proper use of their medications

I sökandet efter framtidens destinationer : Ur researrangörers perspektiv / The search for tomorrow’s destinations : from the perspective of travel organizers

Leinonen , Eini, Lewander, Josefine, Picano, Johanna January 2008 (has links)

Background: The fast growing tourism industry increases the need for new destinations to meet the markets demand. Because of this, destination development becomes a part of tourism development and it can therefore be interesting and relevant to study this phenomenon. It requires consciousness about the destination’s conditions and to what extent tourism can be developed. The study of these conditions can be useful as they are fundamental for future tourism development at a destination.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze which conditions and characteristics a place should have to become an attractive destination.

Methodology: This study has been executed from a positivistic point of view and a quantitative approach. The collection of data has been carried out through five semi-structured interviews.

Conclusions: This study has reached the conclusion that developing tourism at a destination requires a number of specific characteristics, but that these may vary depending on the type of destination. There are several characteristics but the most emphasized are attractions and activities, accessibility and infrastructure, amenities, political stability and safety.
/

A la recherche de nouvelles AgNORs: une famille de protéines nucléolaires conservées et marqueurs potentiels du cancers/The AgNORs: a groups of concerved nucleolar proteins and potential markers of cancer.

Galliot, Sonia 15 January 2010 (has links)
The nucleolus is a subnuclear compartment that organized around ribosomal gene (rDNA) repeats NORs, which encode for ribosomal RNA. A peculiar group of acidic proteins which are highly argyrophilic are also localized at the same sites as NORs, thus allowing NORs to be very clearly and rapidly visualized by silver nitrate staining procedures. However, if three human argyrophilic proteins, UBF, C23 (nucleolin) and B23 (nucleophosmin), have been associated for staining of NOR, the exact number of AgNOR proteins and their intrinsic biochemical feature are unclear. Here, we have performed an heterologous screen in a genetically tractable eukaryotic organism (budding yeast) for the identification of novel AgNOR proteins and in vitro characterized an intrinsic feature that underlies silver binding and offers a strong predictive value for the identification of novel human AgNOR proteins.

Olsson, Lars-Erik January 1999 (has links)
The origin of voluntary organizations has not been studied much in sociology. This study develops a three-phase model of a voluntary organization origin and three case studies are conducted to try out the model. The aim of the study is to describe and analyze the birth of a voluntary organization and its development. The empiric material has been gathered in three voluntary organizations from the mid-80'ies. The organizations are Noaks Ark (working with HIV), 5i12-rörelsen (working with refugees) and Farsor och Morsor på Stan (working with teenagers in Stockholm city). All three organizations still exist. The empiric material has been collected though interviews and other written materials. The theoretical model is divided into three phases, the preorigin phase, the phase of origin and the maturity phase. Each phase has its special character and there is no automatic transference to the next phase. In the first phase - the preorigin phase - the key notion is the entrepreneur or the agitator. The entrepreneur or the agitator sees a problem in society. Often this is coupled with a personal experience of the problem and a desire to do something about it. They gather more knowledge in the area, meet other people and develop an idea of how to solve the problem. In the phase of origin the key notion is the organizer. The leader has to have knowledge of organizing; how to organize people and how to mobilize resources. The organizers are often charismatic and use their charisma to gather people around their idea. In the maturity phase all the distinctive marks of a voluntary organizations can be seen. The key notion is the members' need for security and continuity. The members can also develop a personal need for the organization. The dependence on the founder or the leader decreases in significance, and bureaucracy is developed. Forces outside and inside the organization influence the voluntary organization and it is shaped by its history and surrounding. It is argued that the emergence of a voluntary organization is dependent on three things that has to coincide, discontent and an idea how to relieve it, resources and an organizer. The empiric findings support the three-phase model. In theory the phases are distinctive but in the case studies the phases could overlap.
