Esta pesquisa é sobre um tipo específico de cerâmica grega, denominada \"meliana\". Tem como pano de fundo o rico período orientalizante das regiões que atualmente chamamos Grécia e Turquia. A partir de um vaso grego específico, uma ânfora monumental cicládica, a Ânfora de Apolo, elabora-se uma análise iconográfica com o que foi pintado em sua superfície. A ânfora é o eixo do trabalho e será através dela que outros vasos \"melianos\" serão analisados. Ela é da segunda metade do século VII a.C., sendo parte do acervo do Museu Nacional de Atenas. Este estudo procura as características que definem o tipo cicládico \"meliano\", assim como, observando os limites desta dissertação, faz uma análise de sua distribuição geográfica. O corpus de referência para a pesquisa é composto pela ânfora eixo citada e por outros vasos \"melianos\" cicládicos provenientes de uma fossa de purificação da ilha cicládica Renéia. A análise iconográfica busca relações e comparações dos elementos pintados nos vasos de Renéia com o vaso principal, a Ânfora de Apolo. São estudadas as ações figuradas, as personagens divinas, bestiais e humanas que fazem parte da ação, além dos outros preenchimentos da cerâmica \"meliana\". Também são importantes as fontes textuais especificadas no trabalho que segue. / This study is about a particular kind of Greek vase pottery, called -Melian?, and has the Orientalizing Greek world as background. Beginning with an special one, the -Melian? Cycladic Apollo´s Amphora, the work is supported by an iconographic view with attention to all paintings in this vase. The Apollo´s Amphora is the axle of this master dissertation. It is an amphora from the second half of 7th century B.C. that is located today in the National Museum of Athens. So, the fundamental qualities that identify the -Melian? pottery is the aim, and not just this, but also her geographical distribution. The main corpus is compound by the Apollo´s Amphora and others Cycladic´s -Melian? vases that were found in the Purification Trench on Rheneia. We are looking for contacts and relations in common with Greece and Mesopotamia that could reflect in the elaboration of paintings, elaboration of images. These images figured actions, show characters, and a kind of epithets. They are gods, heroes, animals, mans and lotus´s flowers, trees, spirals, all together sharing the same space, the same superficie. It\'s about one special vase, and a delimited corpus. We know the limits of what can be sure and what is just an exercise of interpretation. The focus is the -Melian? Apollo´s Amphora. As important as the pottery are the textual references in the Greek literature and poetry like Homer and the others that belong to the main text.

Du Villanovien à l'Étrusque : la part des « influences » orientales dans l'évolution des sociétés d'Italie centrale (VIIIe - VIe siècles av. n.è.) / From Villanovian to Etruscan : the part of oriental "influences" on central Italy societies (800 - 580 B.C.)

L'enquête porte sur l'Italie et les premiers temps du monde étrusque. Elle s'intéresse plus particulièrement à la période comprise entre un moment avancé du Premier âge du Fer et de la fin de l'Orientalisant (800-580 av. n.è.). Cette période charnière est celle du passage de la culture villanovienne à la culture étrusque. Les découpages chronologiques traditionnels ont entravé la lecture dans la diachronie de la documentation archéologique, et donc des transformations en œuvre dans la société étrusque. Dans ce travail, je me suis appuyée sur un corpus funéraire totalisant 771 tombes et plus de 10 000 objets provenant de trois sites parmi les mieux documentés de la Péninsule (Veio, Pontecagnano et Verucchio) pour reconstruire un cadre de développement chrono-culturel qui embrasse ces deux périodes traditionnellement disjointes. Ces analyses chronologiques étaient un préalable nécessaire à l'étude de dynamiques culturelles plus complexes qui ont amené à cette époque, les élites (proto) -étrusques à s'insérer dans ce grand courant méditerranéen que fut le phénomène orientalisant, et à s'attacher dans leurs tombes des biens et matières provenant d'Orient. La mise à plat de la documentation, ainsi que la périodisation élaborée dans ce travail permettent désormais de suivre dans une séquence continue et plus longue l'adoption des différents éléments orientaux par les communautés étrusques. / The present investigation deals with Italic peoples and the early days of the Etruscan world. It focuses more particularly on a period from the Early Iron Age to the end of the orientalizing period (800-580 B.C.). This crucial time shows the transition from Villanovian culture to Etruscan culture. The traditional chronological cuts have hindered the diachronical analysis of the archaeological documentation and, therefore, the ongoing social mutation of the Etruscan society. ln this research, I have used three major and well known funerary contexts (of Veio, Pontecagnano and Verucchio), totalizing 771 tombs and more than 10 000 artefacts, in order to reshape a precise chrono-cultural sequence which embraces those two periods, traditionally studied as separated chronological phases. My chronological analysis was a necessary precursor to the study of more complex cultural dynamics that occurred at this time in the Mediterranean Basin: the Orientalizing Phenomenon in which (proto)-Etruscan elites played an active role in using, as new identification criteria in their tombs, goods and raw materials coming from the Orient. The blank creation of the archaeological documentation and the new periodization created in this thesis work now allows us to follow, through a continuous and a longer sequence the adoption, by the Etruscan communities, of various oriental elements.

Esta Dissertação de Mestrado apresenta uma introdução histórica ao período Orientalizante, no qual se insere a produção de vasos de estilo proto-Coríntio (séc. VIII-VI a.C.), seguida de uma breve exposição do desenvolvimento deste estilo durante o geométrico, antigo, médio e recente. Tem como principal objetivo estudar os vasos proto-coríntios encontrados em vários locais da Grécia arcaica. Deste modo, a par de uma bibliografia fundamental, elaborei inicialmente um modelo de corpus documental que se ampliou no decorrer da pesquisa. Pretende estabelecer uma classificação e uma cronologia destes vasos proto-coríntios, comparando-os com alguns exemplares de referência, assim como proceder a uma pesquisa iconográfica a partir da decoração destes exemplares. / Abundantly manufactured from VIII to VI b.C. Corinthian pottery has an unique role to the Archaeology of archaic period. As for its diffusion on entire Mediterranean sea, as for its recapture and assimilation of stylistics foreign elements Protocorinthian pottery has stimulated, for some time, an avid interest on researchers, who see on it a singular instrument to comprehend the ancient world. By using this artistical and cultural world as background, I have developed a Master degree at MAE/USP focusing on the construction of a vases corpus to study the classification, chronology and iconography of Protocorinthian vases. Obviously, to this purpose, it has been necessary to approach such pottery within its historical and methodological meanings.

Un art citoyen. Recherches sur l'orientalisation des artisanats en Grèce proto-archaïque. An art of citizenship. Sudies on Greek orientalizing artefacts.

Cette thèse cherche à mettre en évidence les raisons qui ont amené une large part des ateliers grecs à orientaliser leurs productions durant la "période orientalisante" (VIIe siècle avant J.-C.). La méthode déployée pour répondre à cet objectif consiste en une contextualisation sociale des artisanats orientalisants, laquelle s'effectue par le biais de l'analyse d'un certain nombre de contextes archéologiques et de textes. Une fois le rôle des objets orientalisants dans la société proto-archaïque mis en évidence, leurs raisons d'être apparaissent plus clairement. Le développement de la citoyenneté en Grèce à partir de la seconde moitié du VIIIe siècle avant J.-C. a donné lieu à une extension du pouvoir politique et militaire à une part plus importante de la population des cités. La propagation de ce qui constituait autrefois les principaux modes de reconnaissance a amené les élites à développer de nouvelles façons de se distinguer dans le paysage social. Dans un même temps, les citoyens de chaque cité ont développé des institutions communales, telles que les cultes civiques et les repas en commun, afin d'unifier le groupe qu'ils formaient et de renforcer le fossé qui séparait celui-ci du reste de la société. Le travail de contextualisation entrepris dans cette thèse a montré que l'art orientalisant constituait un outil facilitant la mise en place de ces deux évolutions. D'une part, parce qu'ils faisaient explicitement allusion aux cultures du Proche-Orient, dont les richesses exerçaient une réelle fascination sur les Grecs de cette époque, les objets orientalisants permettaient de rehausser le prestige de leurs propriétaires. Autrement dit, ils constituaient des modes de reconnaissance sociale particulièrement efficaces. De nombreuses données archéologiques et textuelles ont permis de confirmer ce point de vue, mettant en évidence que les objets orientalisants étaient utilisés lors de banquets prestigieux, comme offrandes ostentatoires aux dieux et aux morts, ou encore pour contenir de précieux parfums. D'autre part, en tant qu'esthétique nouvelle, complètement libérée des formes géométriques utilisées durant les siècles précédents, l'art orientalisant figurait également au rang des pratiques censées unifier la citoyenneté. Cette seconde conclusion a été mise en évidence au travers de l'étude du cas de la Crète, où, au VIIe siècle, l'art orientalisant a en grande partie été utilisé dans le cadre d'institutions civiques : les banquets publics, les cultes civiques, et les guerres. This dissertation aims at the understanding of the reasons lying behind the orientalization of artefacts in Greece during the so-called "Orientalizing period" (i.e. the 7th cent. BC). In order to achieve this goal, the author focused on archaeological contexts and textual information. They allowed him to replace the orientalizing objects back in their original social context and to understand their initial purposes. The birth of the citizenship in Greece at the end of the 8th cent. BC gave rise to the extension of the political and military power to a wider part of the population. This created a need for the former elite to develop other means of social distinction. Conversely, the communities of citizens developed communal institutions, like civic cults, communal dinners, etc., meant to cement and to level the group, and to reinforce the gulf that separated it from the rest of the society. This thesis showed that orientalizing art contributed to the setting up of these changes. On one hand, because Greek orientalizing artefacts explicitly alluded to Near Eastern cultures, that were indeed perceived as being particularly rich at that time by the Greeks, they could enhance the individual prestige of the people using them. Archaeological research confirmed this hypothesis, showing that Greek orientalizing objects were used during conspicuous banquets, as lavish offerings for the dead and the gods, and for containing precious perfumes. On the other hand, as artefacts decorated in a new style, completely freed from the geometric aesthetics displayed in the previous centuries, orientalizing objects also figured among the practices developed for strengthening the citizens’ corps. This second conclusion was reached through the study-case of Crete, where orientalizing art of the 7th cent. seems nearly exclusively used in a context of civic institutions : public banquets, civic cults and festivals, and wars.

Crossing the Bridge : An Interpretation of the Archaeological Remains in the Etruscan Bridge Complex at San Giovenale, Etruria

<p>This thesis discusses the archaeological remains in the Etruscan bridge complex, found during the excavations at San Giovenale in 1959–1963, and 1999. The aim has been to reach a holistic perspective of the bridge complex with the bridge seen as a link between topography, economy, social relationships, politics, symbols and ritual, reflecting its importance for the whole community at San Giovenale and its surroundings. Situated at the border between the two largest city-states Tarquinia and Caere, the site seems to have been an important middle range transit town for foreign ideas, goods and people. </p><p>The character of the remains and the various levels of contextual analyses made it possible to distinguish five distinctive functions for the structures at the bridge over the Pietrisco. From a more generalised point of view these suggested that specialized functions may be divided into practical, social and symbolic functions and these aspects have been of help in identifying an object or a structure. Besides practical functions of everyday use, economic and strategic functions have also been considered. </p><p>These functions were more or less in use contemporaneously, at least during several hundred years, from about the middle of the 6th down to the first century B.C. Pottery and small finds show that some activity has taken place at the site from the 9th century. Features of continuity, such as in the choice of crossing, the direction of the bridge construction after its destruction, the architectural ground-plans, the use of basins and a well, pottery fabrics of local and Greek imports and shapes, as well as changes in ground-plans, slight changes in the environment due to water erosion, earth-quakes and slides, have been observed. The physical as well as the liminal boundary between land and water as well as between man and spirits was accentuated by the tufa building, the water installations, and the road at the northern abutment. The thesis raises the hypothesis that the Etruscans believed that a crossing of a river via a bridge could violate the spirits of nature on land and in the water and therefore special rites were needed to restore the balance between nature and man before entering the bridge in order to reach safely at the other side of the ravine. The bridge itself can be seen as sacred, a liminal area where time and space do not exist and a place where it is easy to gain contact with the supernatural world. </p>
