Mýty české hudební alternativy osmdesátých let / Myths of the czech music alternative in the 1980s

Dissertation "Myths of the Czech Music Alternative in the 1980s" presents an anthropological view of the phenomenon of a parallel culture in a limiting situation. On the basis of biographical narratives, additional interviews and data gained from other types of sources, "myths" are constructed for seven major figures of the Czech alternative scene. This is an insider's ethnomusicological interpretation, based on Mircea Eliade's and Bronislaw Malinowski's concepts of myth as recurrent and exemplary models of behavior. The described personalities, Jazz Section (Prometheus), Miroslav Wanek ("hero's journey") Karel Babuljak ("search for paradise lost"), Pavel Zajíček (Odysseus), Mikoláš Chadima ("Rebel"), Oldřich Janota (Hermes), and Marka Míková (Psyche), represent some of the main trends in creative processes of the Czech music alternative scene with myth being used as a metaphor. The metaphor is understood here in the terms of Timothy Rice, i.e. as an organization principle of our thinking, as well as an illuminating image.

This is a short study on the iconographic theme of above mentioned painting. The thesis deals with a topic that has not yet been comprehensively processed. Here, the interest of the author given limited period only slightly extends into the next generation (after Savery) in order to show the iconographic context. Based on the new findings, identifies work as the ruler's order, and that puts the painting in new semantic relationships. In conclusion reflects on the circumstances of the work and the possible way of petting into Prague's collections.

Seasonal Fish Community use of the Great Lakes Coastal Marsh Coates Paradise as reproductive habitat

<p>Coates Paradise is a 250 ha coastal marsh, located at the western most point of Lake Ontario, adjoining Hamilton Harbour. Currently the marsh is severely degraded. Only 15% of the marsh remains vegetated, while the rest exists as an open water turbid bay. Stresses affecting the marsh include a very high carp population, excessive nutrient and sediment input, and water level regulation. Both Coates Paradise and Hamilton Harbour are the targets of an extensive remediation plan, known as the Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan (HHRAP 1991 ).</p> <p>Coastal marshes are recognized for their importance as reproductive areas for the fish community. Considering the importance of marshes to fish, there is a surprising lack of information available. There have been very few comprehensive studies of whole fish communities and their use of marshes, and even fewer which address reproductive utilization. Herdendorf et. al. (1986) listed fish community structure and utilization of marshes for spawning, nursery and feeding areas as the top priorities of coastal wetland research.</p> <p>This study examines the fish community of Coates Paradise for the purpose of providing detailed information on the fish community in association with the HHRAP, as well as examining fish community use of the marsh with respect to reproductive utilization.</p> <p>The study included both temporal and spatial coverage of the marsh fish community. In an attempt to capture whole fish community data for Coates Paradise, fish community surveys were done monthly during the ice-free portion of the season. Surveys were initiated in the summer of 1994, followed by 3 full seasons between 1995 and 1997. Further to this, Coates Paradise was subdivided into 3 habitat types including off-shore, near-shore, and lower river. These habitats were further subdivided into sub-habitats, based on habitat variables that included wind fetch, nutrient enrichment, and degree of vegetation. A total of 8 sub-habitat types were included. Within each sub-habitat type four 50 m transects were located. The transects were surveyed by electrofishing.</p> <p>A total of 47,512 fish covering 47 species were captured in the study. Annual species diversity averaged 38 species, while monthly richness followed a seasonal trend with a maximum of 34 species occurring in July. Most species of fish were found to exist only in the near-shore habitat. Also the near-shore habitat had substantially more fish (Exposed sub-habitat -187 I transect) than the off-shore habitat (Bay sub-habitat -8 I transect).</p> <p>All species demonstrated migration into and out of the marsh in association with spawning periods and spawning habitat guilds. Most species of non YOY fish had highest densities at corresponding spawning times and in correlation to spawning habitat guilds. Habitat preferences of YOY species also generally reflected a species spawning habitat guild. Total non YOY populations were also generally at a peak during spawning periods. The non YOY of most species showed a distinct migration out of the marsh following spawning periods. Samples taken two months prior to a species spawning periods had almost no fish of the species occurring in the marsh, while samples taken two months following peak spawning periods resulted in almost no larger fish of a species being found in the marsh.</p> <p>The dominant fish species of the marsh was adult carp. In the electrofishing data, adult carp represented 90% of the biomass, but only 10% of the total catch. Only six other species had substantial adult population, while most other species are represent by less than 15 individuals in the data set. These six species included, brown bullhead, white sucker, gizzard shad, white perch, spottail shiner and pumpkinseed, and are reflective of the state of the harbour (the adult habitat).</p> <p>The most abundant species in the marsh include YOY of gizzard shad, white perch and spottail shiners, reflecting the marsh's role as reproductive habitat. Maximum numbers of fish occurred in late August, with as many as 800 fish being captured in a single transect. At this time the fish community consisted almost entirely of YOY fish.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

The writer examines the development of Milton’s millenarian ideas through a theological lens. Millenarianism was condemned heretical in the sixteenth century, but it arose at the beginning of the seventeenth century and reached its zenith during the English Revolution. At first, Milton did not believe in the realization of an earthly millennial kingdom. In his early short poems written before 1640, we only find his hope for a kingdom of heaven after the end of the world. However, with the outbreak of the Civil War, Milton was influenced by the then widespread millenarianism, and in his anti-prelatical tracts he expected the imminent coming of Christ to inaugurate an earthly kingdom of God. But his fervency for millenarianism was soon quenched, and was not rekindled until the defeat of Charles I in 1649. In his regicide tracts, he urged the imminence of Christ’s Advent to usher in a terrestrial fifth monarchy. Yet his total blindness in 1652 gave him a deeper “insight” into the value of patience, causing him to readjust his attitude toward millenarianism. After two wrong guesses, Milton finally came to realize in terms of experience that the Day of the Lord was unpredictable, and that all he could do was to wait patiently for God’s time. But he still maintained his belief in the realization of an earthly kingdom of God. On the eve of the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Milton for the last time uttered his millenarian hope. He wished the English Commonwealth would last until the arrival of God’s millennial kingdom. Only this time he did not urge its imminence. Millenarianism was absent in Milton’s two epics—Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. In them the old bard seemed to resume his earlier stance: anticipating a heavenly kingdom of God. But he also emphasized the importance of enjoying a paradise within heart—that is, the kingdom of God has already arrived, and it is not an external, physical monarchy, but an inward, spiritual realm.

Learning and the Knowledge of Faith in Paradise Regained

In Book IV of Paradise Regained, Satan tempts Christ by offering him the learning of the Greek philosophers, poets, and orators. Christ's response is a vehement denigration of Greek literature, which seems to contradict the praise of the classics found in Milton's prose works of the 1640s. Interpreting the condemnation of Greek learning in Paradise Regained as a modification of the poet's early attitudes, the present study examines the biographical, political, theological, and scientific factors which influenced Milton's thought and altered his opinions on the value of classical literature.

Establishing the Bondmother: Examining the Categorization of Maternal Figures in Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Paradise

Literary scholars have been examining and recreating the experiences of “bonded” female characters within Toni Morrison’s novels for decades. However, the distinct experiences of these enslaved women, that are also mothers have not been astutely examined by scholars and deserves more attention. My thesis fleshes out the characterization of several of Morrison’s bonded-mothers and identifies them as a part of a developing controlling image and theory, called the bondmother. Situating these characters within this category allows readers to trace their journeys towards freedom and personal redemption. This character tracing will occur by examining the following Toni Morrison novels: Beloved (1987) and Paradise (1997). It intends to find the convergences and divergences with the originals Sacred Grounds built by the mother-church Church of World Messianity, in Japan, which inspired the Brazilian one. The Sacred Grounds, as paradise models, play a fundamental role in the Church of World Messianity religious work. They are the physical expression of the ideal of its founder, Mokichi Okada (1882-1955), who stated that, through revelation, he had received the mission of starting the establishment of paradise on Earth, the Ideal World, consolidated in the Truth, Virtue and Beauty trilogy, into which the current civilization will be transformed in this 21st century. For this purpose, Okada built three paradise prototypes at Hakone, Atami and Kyoto cities, in Japan, to inspire the establishment of similar prototypes in others countries, until the whole world becomes a paradise. Therefore, aware of the several different aspects, not only of the geographic and cultural issues between Japan and Brazil but also of the specific characteristics of the Church of World Messianity from each country, we seek to answer the question: What and which adaptations were necessary to the transplantation process of a Sacred Ground from Japan to Brazil? What kind of adaptations in the project as well as in the functioning of the Brazilian paradise prototype were necessary due to the different geographic conditions, such as climate, vegetation and landscape, beyond different cultural, religious and social origins, with their respective habits? The theoretical fundamental chosen to do the analysis was Martin Bauman s model of Religious Transplanting Theory. The research allowed us to conclude that the convergences and the divergences that took place in the transplantation process of the Sacred Grounds built in Japan to Brazil, besides making easier the reading, by the Brazilian community, of the main topics of the doctrine that encouraged its construction, added innovative shapes to the architectural and landscaping models of the original paradise prototypes, which in their turn, can inspire the Messianity members from other countries to build their own prototypes / Esta dissertação de mestrado aborda o Solo Sagrado de Guarapiranga, construído na cidade de São Paulo pela Igreja Messiânica Mundial do Brasil, buscando encontrar convergências e divergências com os Solos Sagrados originais que o inspiraram, construídos pela igreja-mãe, a Igreja Messiânica Mundial, no Japão. A pesquisa nos permitiu concluir que as convergências e as divergências que ocorreram no processo de transplantação dos Solos Sagrados construídos no Japão, para o Brasil, além de facilitarem a leitura, pela comunidade brasileira, dos pontos principais da doutrina que motivou a sua construção, acrescentaram formas inovadoras aos modelos arquitetônico e paisagístico dos protótipos do paraíso originais e que podem, por sua vez, inspirar os messiânicos de outros países na construção de seus próprios protótipos

[pt] O trabalho consiste num estudo da Monarquia, um tratado de filosofia política escrito por Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) em princípios do século XIV. Com o objetivo de elaborar uma defesa definitiva do ideal de Império, o autor acaba por construir um modelo de sociedade fundamentado na dualidade de poderes. A abordagem leva em conta o caráter singular da obra em relação à produção intelectual referente à teoria imperial, que circulou durante os últimos séculos da Idade Média. A singularidade não se encontraria na forma de governo proposta por Dante - o governo universal de um só -, mas na argumentação que define esferas de atuação distintas entre o poder secular e o espiritual, responsáveis por guiar a humanidade ao seu duplo fim. Dentro da concepção de mundo medieval, assentada na experiência de unidade entre o transcendente e o imanente, o dualismo sobre o qual Dante constrói sua tese aponta para uma possibilidade de compreensão do caminho privilegiado pelo pensamento moderno. / [en] The work consists of a study of Monarchy, a political- philosophy treaty written by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in the beginning of the XIV century. The author constructs a model of society based on the duality of powers, with the objective to elaborate a definitive defense of the ideal Empire. The approach takes into account the singular nature of the work in relation to the intellectual production referring to the Empire theory, that circulated during Middle Age´s last centuries. The singularity is not in the form of Dante´s proposal of government - the universal government of just one - but in the argumentation that defines distinct actuation areas between secular power and spiritual power, responsible for guarding humanity to its double end. In the medieval conception of wold, based on the experience of unity between the transcendent and the immanent, the dualism over which Dante constructs his thesis showing a possibility of comprehension of the way favoured by modern thought.
