Painting in Paris: Vincent van Gogh, 1886-1888

DiMarco, Christa Rose January 2015 (has links)
In Painting in Paris: Vincent Van Gogh, 1886-1888, Christa DiMarco explores the two-year period Van Gogh lived and worked in Paris. The paintings the artist made in The Netherlands, where he lived prior to Paris, and those he produced in Arles, where he moved afterward, usually receive scholarly attention. The imagery from the artist’s time in the capital is generally marginalized. DiMarco considers how and why the artist used a brighter palette and energetic brushwork while painting in Paris. Considering that his artistic practice spanned only a decade from 1880 to 1890, the artist’s time in the capital represents a significant period of growth in terms of his engagement with the art market, his exposure to avant-garde imagery, and his understanding of Symbolist theory in the visual arts. Van Gogh accomplished significant goals in Paris, though some of his well-developed imagery does not necessarily figure into discussions regarding the canonical paintings of the artist’s body of work. Attention to the Paris-period not only locates Van Gogh’s pictorial development within the context of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists, but also establishes the ways in which the artist diverged from the artistic aims of the Parisian avant-garde, such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, as he developed his Symbolic approach. / Art History

Sketches for a Benedictine monastery, Paris Mountain, Virginia

Whelan, John P. January 1993 (has links)
The site is the Northwest side of Paris Mountain overlooking the valley, flat fields and the winding road along the river. The monastery is thought of as a whole encompassing its various parts: the church, the monk's dormitory, the library, the winery, the bakery, the barns and the field chapel. Also in the enclosure are the elementary school with its classroom building, the administration/theatre building and the gymnasium. There is an imposition of a two-dimensional grid on the natural contour of the mountainside, thus resulting in a grid-like fabric which becomes the origin of a mathematical ordering throughout the site enclosure. The "Grid" is one of directional "force lines" which reflect and generate a relationship between the various buildings as well as their interrelationship to the site. This ordering is not one of predictable "constants" yet more one whose purpose is to be manipulated, eroded, extended and disassembled according to "aesthetic demands" which occur throughout the project. It is not one of a finite programming; however, there is a sense of rational consequences which result as part of this ordering. The "base grid" may eventually be eroded to such a level that what remains is more of a memory of this ordering than of anything clear and distinct in one's perception of it. The extension of this grid is meant to go beyond the confines of the monastic enclosure - as to give a sense of relationship between surrounding fields, roads to the monastery, landscaping and transitional spaces to that which lies within the walls. The solidity of these enclosing walls is one of historical reference to times past. An erosion of the walls also occurs so as to leave them more as skeleton-like markings or ruins, of a fortress which never was. The result being an architectural imposition with directional qualities interrelating site and structure. / Master of Architecture

Implementering av elmopeder i två av de största europeiska städerna / Implementation of electric scooters in two of the largest European cities

Gaphour Ali, Narin, Kjellberg, Oskar January 2024 (has links)
This report explores the opportunities and challenges associated with the internationalization of micromobility services, focusing specifically on the electrification of electric mopeds in the European cities of Berlin and Paris. This is due to the lack of compiled data on the area. Through a collaborative project between Lund University of Technology, the University of Borås, and companies such as Foodora and GoCiklo, the study aims to identify the key drivers and obstacles that influence the expansion of micromobility in urban environments. Combining literature studies and semi-structured interviews with operators in the micromobility sector, such as service and electric moped providers, the study offers insights into strategic considerations for establishing micromobility services across geographical and cultural boundaries. The report provides concrete recommendations on how companies can navigate complex regulatory environments and utilize economic incentives to promote faster business establishment. Furthermore, this study presents a comprehensive examination of guidelines, economic, and social perspectives to provide a current analysis of micromobility. Theoretically, the work contributes to a deeper understanding of the micromobility concept and its role in sustainable urban development. Practically, the study offers strategic recommendations for urban planners and operators on how electric mopeds can be integrated into urban environments in a way that benefits both users and the broader community. The study's findings emphasize the importance of innovative solutions to overcome technical and infrastructural barriers, while highlighting the need to adapt incentives to promote broader acceptance and use of electric mopeds. Finally, the ambition of this work is to provide a foundation to motivate future urban planners to consider the implementation of electric mopeds, with a particular focus on GoCiklo as a company.
