Park-above-Parking Downtown: A Spatial-Based Investigation

Ren, Lanbin 11 July 2013 (has links)
Parking and parks are both crucial to downtown economic development. Many studies have shown that downtown parks significantly contribute to increasing surrounding property values and attract residents, businesses and investment. Meanwhile, sufficient available parking promotes accessibility to downtown that also contributes to increasing tax revenue for local government. However, both downtown parks and parking raise problems. Many downtown parks have become places for drug dealing, shooting and vandalism since the decline of downtowns in the 1960s. At the same time, residents and visitors alike oftentimes complain about the lack of parking while in fact parking spaces occupy a large amount of land in downtown. Parks and parking also compete for space in downtown where land value is higher than the rest of the city. To address these issues, several cities have begun to address the relationship between parking and parks by placing them in one place: park on the ground level and parking underneath. This typology is defined as a park-above-parking project in this research. However, this phenomenon has received little scholarly attention. To justify the existing situation of park-above-parking and to contemplate future projects, this research provides a spatial-based investigation to discuss the empirical relationships between social cultural and political-economic impacts, design quality, and related policy-making processes based on four cases. A longitudinal study that traces the direct and indirect impacts of park-above-parking projects was conducted for each case through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This research provides a set of methods for the measurement of contributions of park-above-parking downtown, connections between park quality, social use and adjacent economic growth, recommendations for land use planning policy-making and guidelines for the design of park-above-parking projects.

Utveckling av ett cykelskåp anpassat för stadsmiljö / Development of a bike box matching city environments

Öberg, Daniel January 2019 (has links)
The project began as an open question in collaboration with a consulting company in product development to develop a more secure parking for bicycles. Therefore, a comprehensive feasibility study was performed to evaluate the bicycle values and to see potential development opportunities for different types of bicycle parking. Blidsberg mekaniska is a company that manufactures bicycle parking and other types of outdoor environment products. They were involved in the work and wanted to expand their range with a new bike box. The designprocess started with a marketreasearch with the aim to analyze cycle parks in a pre-study. During the pre-study demands was researched and formed a requirement specification. The creative work in the development of a new cycle park was helped by many creative methods that generated many concepts that later was compared in a matrix. The final concept was able to compete with the existing solutions. The result was a combination of already existing solutions. The bicycle locker does not take up more space than is necessary for most bicycles to fit in. The bicycle locker is modularly adapted and can therefore be placed more space efficiently in different places. A light indication on the handle indicates whether the bicycle locker is free or occupied and opened with a tag that is scanned on a RFID-reader.

Geração de viagens e demanda por estacionamento em shopping centers do interior do estado de São Paulo / Trip generation and parking demand in shopping centers in the country side of the state of Sao Paulo

Brevis Cárdenas, Carolina Beatriz 29 September 2003 (has links)
In this work, a study about trip generation and parking demand in six shopping centers located in Brazilian medium sized cities in the country side of the state of Sao Paulo is presented. In three of them detailed field researches were accomplished. The other three didn\'t allow the realization of researches, but they provided global data about trip generation and parking demand. Base on the obtained data, the main parameters related to the trip generation and parking demand for each one of the enterprises are determined, as well as, the group of results of those parameters using basic Statistics concepts are analyzed. In the sequence, it is verified if the main patterns for trips to the shopping centers and the new models developed at the country represent adequately the reality in the studied universe. Afterwards, due to the survey data collected in this study, to the results presented in other studies and to the effectuated analysis, a new method to measure some project parameters is developed and proposed for shopping centers located in Brazilian medium sized cities, in the country side of the state of Sao Paulo. Finally, the main parameters that characterize the trip generation and parking demand, obtained with the application of the new proposed method, are compared to the furnished values by other models developed in Brazil.

Automatic parking lot occupancy computation using motion tracking

Unknown Date (has links)
Nowadays it is very hard to find available spots in public parking lots and even harder at facilities such as universities and sports venues. A system that provides drivers with parking availability and parking lot occupancy will allow users find a parking space much easier and faster. This thesis presents a system for automatic parking lot occupancy computation using motion tracking. The use of computer vision techniques and low cost video sensors makes it possible to have an accurate system that allows drivers to find a parking spot. Video bitrate and quality reduction and its impact on performance were studied. It was concluded that high quality video is not necessary for the proposed algorithm to obtain accurate results. The results show that relatively inexpensive and low bandwidth networks can be used to develop large scale parking occupancy applications. / by Francisco Alberto Justo Torres. / Thesis (M.S.C.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

The independent steering and driving vehicle: design, energy efficiency and parking analysis. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2010 (has links)
After describing the development of the ISDV, this thesis studies the energy management which can improve the energy efficiency. It is shown that the traditional electric vehicle (EV) is not capable of managing the energy required for one driving cycle because it has only a single traction motor. This thesis proposes and examines a new way to manage electrical energy in which torque is distributed among different in-wheel motors to achieve a higher level of overall energy efficiency, which has been enhanced and demonstrated in various driving cycles. / Thereafter, the thesis studies two aspects of benefits the ISDV can bring to parking. One is in space efficiency, defined as the ratio of the total space occupied by the vehicle in its final parked state over the whole area covered by the parking lot. Comparison of the ISDV and traditional vehicles in parking proves that the ISDV afford a higher level of space efficiency. The other aspect is the parking time. It is tested experimentally in the hardware-in-loop (HIL) system, and the motions of traditional vehicles, the zero radius turning motion, and the free motion of the ISDV are compared. The less time for parking demonstrates the easiness to steer the ISDV. / Throughout the history of human civilization, vehicles have played a significant role by connecting people in various locations. They have thus boosted the progress of civilization and made our lives more convenient. However, as the number of vehicles on the road has increased, the convenience, which vehicles provide, has gradually turned into inconvenience in three respects: 1) the energy consumed by vehicles accounts for a large proportion of total energy consumption, which is in an ever-increasing trend; 2) more parking space is needed, a significant proportion of which is not for parking itself but for enabling the vehicle to be navigated to its final parking slot; 3) the effort required to park a car is also troublesome, causing the driver to spend much more time in a crowded parking lot. / To alleviate these three problems, I develop a methodology to design an independent steering and driving vehicle (ISDV). It brings together the robotic technologies of steer-by-wire, drive-by-wire, four-wheel-independent-steering, and four-wheel-independent-driving. All four wheels of the ISDV can be steered independently, so that vehicle rotation and translation can be decoupled from each other. Omni-directional motions such as zero radius turning (ZRT) and lateral parking (LP) are realized, thereby enhancing the agility of the vehicle. In contrast with omni-directional wheeled mobile robots, this vehicle is targeted at serving as a human carrier or even as a vehicle carrier in the future. / Qian, Huihuan. / Adviser: Yangsheng Xu. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: B, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 149-159). / Electronic reproduction. A Combinatorial Miscellany: Antipodes, Parking Cars, and Descent Set Powers

Happ, Alexander Thomas 01 January 2018 (has links)
In this dissertation we first introduce an extension of the notion of parking functions to cars of different sizes. We prove a product formula for the number of such sequences and provide a refinement using a multi-parameter extension of the Abel--Rothe polynomial. Next, we study the incidence Hopf algebra on the noncrossing partition lattice. We demonstrate a bijection between the terms in the canceled chain decomposition of its antipode and noncrossing hypertrees. Thirdly, we analyze the sum of the 𝑟th powers of the descent set statistic on permutations and how many small prime factors occur in these numbers. These results depend upon the base 𝑝 expansion of both the dimension and the power of these statistics. Finally, we inspect the ƒ-vector of the descent polytope DPv, proving a maximization result using an analogue of the boustrophedon transform.

Design And Control Of A Self-parking Model Car

Avgan, Utku 01 October 2003 (has links) (PDF)
A fuzzy logic control algorithm for self parking of a model car has been developed and an embedded controller hardware has been designed, manufactured and programmed to control parking maneuvers of a model car within the scope of this thesis study. The model car chassis consists of a DC motor actuated traction system and a servomotor actuated steering mechanism. Position data and parking place data is obtained by a sensory system. A stepper motor driven rotary table is designed and assembled to the model car chassis for positioning of the sensory system. The controller hardware includes all the required peripherals for interfacing to the motors and sensory system. A visual computer program running in PC environment is developed in order to simulate the control characteristics of the fuzzy logic algorithm. The program allows the user to generate fuzzy sets and fuzzy set members and allows the user to define membership functions and fuzzy rules. Once an appropriate control characteristic is obtained, all the parameters can be exported to a file in order to be downloaded to the controller.
