Practical, Large-Scale Detection of Obfuscated Malware Code Via Flow Dependency Indexing

Jin, Wesley 01 May 2014 (has links)
Malware analysts often need to search large corpuses of obfuscated binaries for particular sequences of related instructions. The use of simple tactics, such as dead code insertion and register renaming, prevents the use of conventional, big-data search indexes. Current, state of the art malware detectors are unable to handle the size of the dataset due to their iterative approach to comparing files. Furthermore, current work is also frequently designed to act as a detector and not a search tool. I propose a system that exploits the observation that many data/control-flow relationships between instructions are preserved in the presence of obfuscations. The system will extract chains of flow-dependent instructions from a binary’s Program Dependence Graph (PDG). It will then use a representation of each chain as a key for an index that points to lists of functions (and their corresponding files). Analysts will be able to quickly search for instruction sequences by querying the index.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The use of the concept metacontingency in experimental research was started in 2004 by Vichi, using an experimental model called The Matrix Model. Over the past 10 years, other experimental models were used in these studies, highlighting the model that uses the Meta software and the Prisoner's Dilemma Game with the addition of a cultural consequence. This study uses the latter model in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design to investigate the effect of the following variables and their interactions: communication (with or without communication), type of choice (sequential or simultaneous) and inequity of reinforcements (relative or absolute inequity) . 72 participants were divided in 24 groups of 3. Each group was exposed to only a specific combination of IVs, for a session with an average duration of 60 minutes. The experimental design was ABA. In each trial each participant had to choose between the alternatives X or Y. The amount of points received by each participant depended on the combination of the choices of the three participants according to the equations: Y = n x 4 / X + Y = 7, in which n is the number of participants choosing Y. In Condition B, in addition to individual points, a metacontingency was introduced in which 60 points were released contingent on the production of the combination YXX. The stability criterion used in Condition B was the production of the target combination in 80% of the last 10 trials or a maximum of 400 trials. The two presentations of Condition A lasted for 50 trials each. The results suggest the variable Absolute Inequity as a great hindrance for the selection of the target combination. The variable No Communication did not prevent the selection of the combination, however, it is difficult to maintain the production of the combination by the group after the completion of the stability criterion. The interaction between at least two of the following variables facilitated the acquisition of target combination: With Communication, Sequential Choices and Relative Iniquity.

Effects of DP and CRTH2 activation on osteoblast function

Nedelcescu, Mihai January 2011 (has links)
Modulation of PGs by inhibition or stimulation is a promising approach for the management of pain and inflammation in patients with rheumatic disease. Based on recent results from our laboratories as well as on the literature, we hypothesise that Prostaglandin D[subscript 2] (PGD[subscript 2]) is an important anabolic agent for osteoblasts. Our results show that the PGD[subscript 2] decreases the osteoblasts proliferation acting probably through the CRTH2 receptor. Surprisingly, when DK-PGD[subscript 2] was used alone or with Naproxen, although the proliferation decreased with the dose, it seemed to be restored to the control level at higher concentrations of DK-PGD[subscript 2] . Thus, we hypothesise the existence of other compensatory mechanisms. The PGD[subscript 2] had no relevant effect alone or when used with Naproxen, but seemed to decrease the osteoblast differentiation when used with Diclofenac at a higher concentration only. When vitamin D was added to all conditions, PGD[subscript 2] had an inhibitory effect on the differentiation (dose-response), but this could not be replicated when Naproxen was used. In a test with Diclofenac, we can assume a decreasing trend-line for differentiation when augmenting the PGD[subscript 2] dose, but the effect is not statistically relevant. In a competition test with PGD[subscript 2] and DP/CRTH2 antagonists, blocking DP receptor yielded no effect on differentiation, and blocking the CRTH2 receptor showed a relevant decrease at high concentration of PGD[subscript 2]. The effect was similar in a test with PGD[subscript 2] and PPAR[gamma] antagonist suggesting that it might have a compensatory, positive effect that reversed DP activation. The PGD[subscript 2] has a slight positive effect on the osteoblast matrix mineralisation (with Naproxen), but not through its receptors since use of DP/CRTH2 antagonists did not abrogate this. In a competition test with PGD[subscript 2] and DP/CRTH2 antagonists we had no response. When we used the PGD[subscript 2] in the presence of PPAR[gamma] antagonist, the calcification decreased significantly, indicating that the positive effect of PGD[subscript 2] on calcification works rather through this receptor.

Etude mathématique de la convergence de la PGD variationnelle dans certains espaces fonctionnels / Mathematical study of the variational PGD’s convergence in certain functional spaces

Ossman, Hala 23 May 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, we are interested in the PGD (Proper Generalized Decomposition), one of the reduced order models which consists in searching, a priori, the solution of a partial differential equation in a separated form. This work is composed of five chapters in which we aim to extend the PGD to the fractional spaces and the spaces of functions of bounded variation and to give theoretical interpretations of this method for a class of elliptic and parabolic problems. In the first chapter, we give a brief review of the litterature and then we introduce the mathematical notions and tools used in this work. In the second chapter, the convergence of rank-one alternating minimisation AM algorithms for a class of variational linear elliptic equations is studied. We show that rank-one AM sequences are in general bounded in the ambient Hilbert space and are compact if a uniform non-orthogonality condition between iterates and the reaction term is fulfilled. In particular, if a rank-one (AM) sequence is weakly convergent then it converges strongly and the common limit is a solution of the alternating minimization problem. In the third chapter, we introduce the notion of fractional derivatives in the sense of Riemann-Liouville and then we consider a variational problem which is a generalization of fractional order of the Poisson equation. Basing on the quadratic nature and the decomposability of the associated energy, we prove that the progressive PGD sequence converges strongly towards the weak solution of this problem. In the fourth chapter, we benefit from tensorial structure of the spaces BV with respect to the weak-star topology to define the PGD sequences in this type of spaces. The convergence of this sequence remains an open question. The last chapter is devoted to the d-dimensional heat equation, we discretize in time and then at each time step one seeks the solution of the elliptic equation using the PGD. Then, we show that the piecewise linear function in time obtained from the solutions constructed using the PGD converges to the weak solution of the equation.

Cloneless: Code Clone Detection via Program Dependence Graphs with Relaxed Constraints

Simko, Thomas J 01 June 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Code clones are pieces of code that have the same functionality. While some clones may structurally match one another, others may look drastically different. The inclusion of code clones clutters a code base, leading to increased costs through maintenance. Duplicate code is introduced through a variety of means, such as copy-pasting, code generated by tools, or developers unintentionally writing similar pieces of code. While manual clone identification may be more accurate than automated detection, it is infeasible due to the extensive size of many code bases. Software code clone detection methods have differing degree of success based on the analysis performed. This thesis outlines a method of detecting clones using a program dependence graph and subgraph isomorphism to identify similar subgraphs, ultimately illuminating clones. The project imposes few constraints when comparing code segments to potentially reveal more clones.

Structuring Emperical Methods for Reuse and Efficiency in Product Development Processes

Bare, Marshall Edwin 21 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Product development requires that engineers have the ability to predict product performance. When product performance involves complex physics and natural phenomena, mathematical models are often insufficient to provide accurate predictions. Engineering companies compensate for this deficiency by testing prototypes to obtain empirical data that can be used in place of predictive models. The purpose of this work is to provide techniques and methods for efficient use of empirical methods in product development processes. Empirical methods involve the design and creation of prototype hardware and the testing of that hardware in controlled environments. Empirical methods represent a complete product development sub-cycle within the overall product development process. Empirical product development cycles can be expensive in both time and resources. Global economic pressures have caused companies to focus on improving the productivity of their product development cycles. A variety of techniques for improving the productivity of product development processes have been developed. These methods focus on structuring process steps and product artifacts for reuse and efficiency. However these methods have, to this point, largely ignored the product development sub-cycle of empirical design. The same techniques used on the overall product development processes can and should be applied to the empirical product development sub-cycle. This thesis focuses on applying methods of efficient and reusable product development processes on the empirical development sub-cycle. It also identifies how to efficiently link the empirical product development sub-cycle into the overall product development process. Specifically, empirical product development sub-cycles can be characterized by their purposes into three specific types: first, obtaining data for predictive model coefficients, boundary conditions and driving functions; second, validating an existing predictive model; and third, to provide the basis for predictions using interpolation and extrapolation of the empirical data when a predictive model does not exist. These three types of sub-cycles are structured as reusable processes in a standard form that can be used generally in product development. The roles of these three types of sub-cycles in the overall product development process are also established and the linkages defined. Finally, the techniques and methods provided for improving the efficiency of empirical methods in product development processes are demonstrated in a form that shows their benefits.

Producing texts at school is a challenging task, since it is necessary to lead students to think about writing in a meaningful way in the society in which they are part of, considering the multimodalities of the text genres as well as people´s engagement in different communities of practice. This challenge becomes even greater when it involves the use of technology. After all, it cannot be excluded from the classroom. The documentary script genre is a possibility to promote the production of texts allied to technology use. Thus, the work to be presented focused on to understand the repercussion of the adoption of a Didactic Project with text genres, as an active methodology in the teaching and learning process of the students, regarding the development of literacy and the construction of their identity, when this teaching device enables the legitimation of communities of practice in the classroom. Thereby, it also reinforces the importance of mother tongue teacher´s role as mediator of the development of literacy through interaction, including digital media, in a social perspective. As theoretical basis, the study presents the social conception of learning, the concept of communities of practice from Wenger (2001), the literacy studies according to Street (2008, 2012), Barton & Lee (2015), Kleiman (1995, 2007,2014), as well as the Didactic Project of text genres as a teaching device (Guimarães and Kersch, 2014,2015), that has Bronckart's Sociodiscursive Interactionism (2009) as its background. Through the analysis of the productions carried out throughout the project, it was possible to perceive students´evolution with regard to the genre and the different literacies. Such advances were not developed individually but collectively. Therefore, it was possible to evaluate that these students constituted communities of practice, understood here as for the construction of knowledge that was at stake.

The need for the continued development of teaching methods of mother tongue able to transform students' language practices and promote interdisciplinary relations of knowledge, according to advocating official documents as the PCNs and OCEM, are so Overall, the social context in which originate the motivations for developing this research. Thus, the central focus of the investigative action of this research is on didactization process of a text genre (whose social practice fosters interdisciplinary) that occurs in this research using a teaching device called Genre Didactical Projects (henceforth GDP) that enables the language of instruction through text genres, developing the students' language skills. However, demand for interdisciplinarity leads to text genre study ‘Media Articles of Science Communication'. This work presents the application of a GDP focusing on gender Article MDC in order to develop students' language skills and to foster interdisciplinary learning. The main theoretical contributions that sustain the actions of this research are located in Socio-Discursive Interacionism studies (SDI) of Bronckart (2009; 2012; 2013), in addition to studies on language skills, conducted by Dolz and Schneuwly (2011) and Cristóvão; Stutz (2011; 2013), on Teaching sequences, also Dolz and Schneuwly (2011); on literacy projects, Kleiman (1995; 1999; 2000; 2007; 2008) and the scientific and media disclosure from Charaudeau (2008; 2009; 2010). The methodological process by which it accomplishes this research consists in action research and consists of actions ranging from planning the GDP and its application in the classroom to the development of data analysis tool. The preparation of the GDP resulted in an interdisciplinary project called 'Young scientists' applied to a class of 2nd year of high school in a public school in the city of Sapucaia do Sul and with the collaboration of a Biology teacher in order to establish interdisciplinary. The data analysis indicates that the didactization of a genre as the Media Articles of Science Communication, through a language teaching device as the PDG, can indeed develop students' language skills and contribute to the construction of interdisciplinary learning in the classroom of class.
