How using assistive technologies (AT's) affect the interpretation of the ability-disability construct of people with adult-onset locomotor disabilities

Muzite, Precious January 2016 (has links)
This study focused on how assistive technologies (ATs) affect the ability-disability construct of adult-onset locomotor disabled individuals in the South African city of Johannesburg. Its main aim was to understand the socialized use of assistive technologies in adult-onset locomotor disabilities and to unravel how the socialized use of assistive technologies affect the users’ interpretations of the ability-disability construct; through the perceptions of the participants within a developing world context. Relatively, there have been few ATs studies in South Africa and they have excluded the ‘voice ‘of the disabled people. Ten conveniently sampled adult-onset locomotor disabled individuals participated. An interpretive technique in the form of semi structured one hour interviews was used for data collection. The descriptors of events for the thematic analysis were the patterns or themes in which participants were constructing the narratives of their lives. These patterns were formulated using Braun and Clarke (2006) six stages of identifying, analysing and reporting patterns within the data. Transcribed texts from the ten semi-structured interviews were subjected to thematic analysis based on how the participants perceived their assistive technologies. Four central themes emerged which centred on how people perceived their ability-disability; the social acceptability of ATs, accessibility factors and new trends in assistive technologies. The research findings indicate that most adult onset disabled individuals in a South African context tended to embrace the promises of technology centred on positive attributes such as: improved communication with others, increased mobility, physical safety, personal autonomy, control over one's body and life, independence, competence, confidence, the ability to engage in the workforce and participation in the wider community. Although such positive attributes seemed to reinforce perceived ability as the boundary between disabled bodies, technology was blurred. However, this perceived ability was found to be rather misleading since it was premised in the same medical and social discourse that ‘disabled’ individuals. T he participants’ narratives were constantly constructing and reconstructing the way they perceived themselves as able or disabled. The studies therefore recommend that, disability narratives on the perception of ATs should be viewed as fluid, complex and multi-layered.

Caregivers of adults with physical disabilities: perceived stress levels and impact on caregiver-care recipient relationship

Ditiso, Baikgopodi January 2018 (has links)
A research report in partial fulfilment of Masters of Arts in Social and Psychological Research, School of Human and Community Development, University of Witwatersrand, 2018 / Caregiving is reported in numerous studies to have adverse effects on caregivers, including caregiver stress; mental and emotional strain; feelings of burden; and even the risk of mortality. Specifically for caregivers of adults with physical disabilities (AWPD), it is appreciated that caregiving is a life-changing experience as major modifications have to be made. These numerous changes have been reported to expedite the manifestation of stress that is differently perceived by the caregivers. Caregivers of AWPD are therefore anticipated to be at high risk of stress as this type of caregiving has been reported to be burdensome. In South Africa, researchers seem to have overlooked caregivers of adults with physical disabilities as a group that potentially have specific and unique perceptions in the role of caregiving. Most importantly the literature seemed limited in presenting how caregivers of AWPD qualify stress levels. Another paucity observed in the existing literature is that there are no accounts by caregivers on how the qualified stress levels impact on the relationship between the caregiver and care recipient. The aim of the current research was to explore perceived stress levels of caregivers of AWPDs. A second aim was to establish how caregivers of AWPD perceive stress levels to impact on the caregiver-care recipient relationship. The results highlighted that caregivers perceived stress levels to be fluctuating with time and affecting their health. According to the perspectives of the caregivers of AWPD, stress has either positive or negative impacts on the caregiver-care recipient communication, cooperation and closeness, differing amongst caregivers. / XL2018

Acessibilidade como fator de equiparação de oportunidades para pessoas com deficiência na escola: análise de garantias legais em países da América Latina. / Accessibility as a tool on the equiparation of opportunities for people with disabilities at schools: comparative analysis of Latin America legal warranties.

Teixeira, Valquiria Prates Pereira 03 April 2008 (has links)
This is a qualitative research of documental analysis. Its object is the current accessibility legislation between 1990 and 2005 in three Latin American countries: Brazil, Bolivia and Mexico. The goals on this work are: to analyse the accessibility legislation of those countries and to compare their contents and meanings, checking the relations between then and the international recommendations related to the theme during the period. The legal documents were approached from three categories, developed for this research: physical / architectural accessibility, assistive technology for school education and accessibility culture. The inquiries during the development of this study aimed to identify: the specificities on the right to education for people with disabilities (MAZZOTA, 2006; ROMITA, 2007; GARCIA, 2004; ODEH, 2000; STAINBACK & STAINBACK 1999; AINSCOW, 2001; SASSAKI, 2004; FÁVERO, 2004; SOUSA & PRIETO, 1999; PRIETO, 2003), the role of international recommendations on the elaboration process of legal warranties of accessibility for the education of this (IDRM, 2004; CEPAL, 2003) and the elements that constitutes the notion of accessibility as an equiparation of opportunities factor at the school education for them (NUNES & SOBRINHO, 2007; OLIVER, 1990; CONVINGTON & HANNAH, 1997; SCIS, 2006; LENT, 2005; HOGETOP & SANTAROSA, 2001; NASAA, 2005; TESSARO, 2004; MOYSÉS, 2001; MANZINI, 2006; GRANDJEAN, 1998; AMARAL & NOGUEIRA, 2006; MARTINS NETO & ROLLENBERGER, 2006). The results show that the international recommendations promoted by United Nations and Unesco, between 1990 and 2005, has been working as important tools on the diffusion of parameters for the warranty of the rights of people with disabilities. The participation of Brazil on the international meetings has promoted a quite good specification of questions previously mentioned and the conceptual approximation with the international recommendations as well. At the Bolivian legislation, the school education has become more detailed, approaching the idea of equalization of opportunities, with some topics touching on accessibility aspects. In the school specific legislation of Mexico we have found some quotes on the rights of people with disabilities and concise but well detailed warranties of physical, social and communication access. These data take us to the conclusion that the relationship between the international recommendations and the elaboration process of legal warranties at those countries is not linear, but dynamical, in movement of conceptual stimulation, absorption and exchange, resulting in an organic - and not hierarchical - relation, that involves the local laws and the organized movements and leaderships discussions. So, the international recommendations works as motivational, inspirational, orientation and mark for the mentioned process, as well a reference to be incorporated by the legislation, with status of international law, particularly when the country signs their compromise with the international documents. We can point as possible researches from this, the relationship between the legislation and the accessibility culture aspects incorporated on daily life in the analyzed countries, or a deepen in the knowledge on the specific contributions of Universal Design and Ergonomics in the process of promotion the school education for people with disability.

Discoursing disability : the personal and political positioning of disabled people in talk and textwork

Hodgkins, Stephen L. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents a critical disability discourse analysis. It examines the discursive construction of disability and the personal and political positioning of disabled people. Focusing on disclosure, identity, activism, theory and policy issues relating to disabled people, the naturalisation and invalidation of the disabled body is explored and critiqued. Organised in three parts, the thesis begins by considering some significant historical moments, the sociolegal context and the recent politicisation of both disabled people and disability research. Disability is argued as embedded in, and institutionalised by, political regulatory structures and research that risks de-politicisation of it is critiqued. Part two considers theories, methods and the text data collected for the research. This defines the theoretical orientation to discursive psychology, discourse analysis and critical disability studies. Disability is articulated as an object in, and for interaction and its construction linked to historical, social and political structures that regulate and sustain the human subject. The text data used in the thesis is then presented in terms of the collection process and the organisation of extracts within the current thesis. The forms of text data collected include transcriptions of discussion groups with disabled people, front line workers and senior managers, policy documents, publicity imagery and Hansard records of parliamentary debates. Part three then presents a critical disability discourse analysis using this text data. Drawing on the framework of discourse analysis as articulated by Potter and Wetherell (1987) the discursive function, construction and variation of disability talk and textwork is critically considered. This reveals dilemmas of positioning and ideology during moments of disability disclosure. Analytical commentary argues that disability identity is constructed by an interpretative repertoire embedded in the antithesis of desired and valued life. The construction of ‘barriers’ in social model texts are also explored in discussion groups and local policy documents. This shows the recent distortion and colonisation of the social model, and suggests that the metaphor of ‘barriers’ used to signify the structures that disable people has lost its once radical and resistive power. Hansard records are then used to explore implications and dilemmas which arise regarding agency, autonomy and the disabled body in relation to dominant discourses of individualism and the challenges this poses for an ‘independent living’ reform strategy. The thesis concludes by asserting a discursive mode of disablism. This is suggested as a useful driver for research and initiatives to expose and challenge everyday discourses and practises that perpetuate the invalidation of the disabled body.

Measuring the community participation of adults with intellectual disability : development and validation of the Guernsey Community Participation and Leisure Assessment - Revised

Taylor-Roberts, Laura January 2017 (has links)
An up to date, psychometrically robust measure of the level of community participation of adults with intellectual disabilities was not in existence, despite research identifying community participation as an important aspect of quality of life. The current research aimed to bring up to date, revise and revalidate the Guernsey Community Participation and Leisure Assessment (GCPLA; Baker, 2000). Adults with intellectual disabilities, carers and relevant experts were consulted in creating a 46-item GCPLA-R. The measure was then tested and the data from 153 adults with intellectual disabilities were analysed for their factor structure and psychometric properties. A stable set of factors emerged from factor analysis describing three different clusters of community participation activities. A full and a brief version of the scale were produced, each containing the three sub-scales. Both the 22-item and 46-item GCPLA-R were found to have satisfactory reliability. Scores on the GCPLA-R were related to challenging behaviour and adaptive behaviour in theoretically consistent ways, and were correlated with scores on comparable measures. The 46-item GCPLA-R was selected for publication due to its stronger face and content validity. The outcome of the analyses is discussed, along with limitations and implications for future research and clinical practice.
