Developing a low pressure blow molding machine for demonstration purposes and production of plastic bottles : a thesis presented in p artial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering in Mechatronics at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Hugener, Bruno January 2009 (has links)
This thesis presents the research of packaging beer into plastic bottles and the design and manufacture of a low pressure bottle blow moulding machine for demonstration purposes. The machine will be used for the production of plastic bottles suitable for bottling brewed beer at the microbrewery at Massey University Palmerston North. Premanufactured PET preforms have proven to be the most convenient and promising choice for the fabrication of blown bottles. Basic tests to understand the behaviour of the preforms and the challenges of the blowing process have been carried out. A special focus has been placed on the different circumstances at University in contrast to industrial bottle production in particular the needed air pressure to form the bottles. The following step was to find the ideal method and principle to handle the preforms and to transform them in the desired shape. Finally the design, drawing of the parts and assemblies were carried out with the 3-D CAD software Solidworks. The designed parts for the bottle blower have been manufactured at the mechanical Workshop at Massey University. To control the bottle blower, the National Instruments USB interface was selected which required the design and manufacture of an additional driver interface card to protect the USB interface and convert the TTL levels into higher voltage. The final assembly and testing of the blower then concluded the practical work for this master project. A suitable design for the bottle production was found and the assembled Bottle Blower can now be used for the production of PET bottles.

A Minor Field study on facilitating the handling of used PET water bottles in Uganda / En fältstudie för att främja hanteringen av förbrukade PET vattenflaskor i Uganda

Sabirova Höjerström, Olga January 2013 (has links)
This is a Minor Fields Study (MFS) project with the aim to facilitate the handling of empty PET bottles in Uganda. The eight weeks in Uganda gave an insight in how products are produced and how the waste surplus material is managed by local producers as well as factories. During the time in Uganda a problem concerning waste management of used PET-bottles was discovered as well as a need for a concept that facilitates the handling of PET bottles in restaurants and hotels. This thesis describes the development of a product prototype, which is designed by following product design process and from the knowledge gathered in Uganda. The product is designed to be manufactured and used in Uganda. The main purpose of the product is to compress used PET-bottles, to accomplish a size reduction. This will make it easier to gather the bottles and transport them to a recycling plant.

This study had the aim to evaluate CO2 retention in PET bottles filled with carbonated and drinkable water using different closure systems studied in 3 different storage conditions, 5, 25 and 35°C. It was evaluated 4 commercial closure systems: 3 of conventional type and one with O2 and CO2 gas barrier; and also it was developed a 5th kind for this experience: a hybrid closure system composed by plastic and metallic materials. All 5 types of closures were tested in 23g, 25g and 28g PET bottles of 600mL. The CO2 concentration in the carbonated water was weekly measured through the packaging free space pressure during 3 months. The results indicate that retention of CO2, in all closure systems tested, was straightly related with storage temperature. At 35°C for 25g and 28g bottle systems were observed significant different values. At 25°C storage condition, significant difference of gas retention was observed where a barrier closure was tested. At refrigerated temperature (5°C) only commercial closures were tested and all of them did not show ¿ in the studied period ¿ significant variation of CO2 retention / Mestrado / Mestre em Tecnologia de Alimentos

The use of synthetic polymers in the world and particularly in Brazil has been increasing for decades representing the huge success achieved by these materials in various applications. The main characteristics of synthetic polymers are their low cost and weight, good mechanical strength, impermeability, transparency and the possibility of coloring, which results in their massive use in the form of packaging an application extremely important in a society focused on consumption. Despite all its advantages, the polymers are generally used in the manufacture of objects whose useful life it is extremely short, like bottled water and soft drinks , produced with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or as previously mentioned, in packs of all species, resulting in a rapid increase in the waste stream. In this scenario, recycling becomes a promising alternative. By definition, recycling is a process of transformation materials previously separated for later use or is the recovery of waste by means of a series of operations that allow processed materials to be utilized as raw material in generating process or in other process. The first stage of this work was to attempt to make the depolymerization of PET using molecular distillation process, but results showed that it is not possible to use the molecular distiller for the depolymerization of this type of polymer. In the second stage of the work, post-consumer PET was subjected to recrystallization to remove the dye, using trifluoroacetic acid as solvent in in a new attempt to recycle this material. The modified material and post-consumer PET were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) / Mestrado / Desenvolvimento de Processos Químicos / Mestra em Engenharia Química

Posouzení vhodnosti PET drtě firmy PETKA CZ, a.s. pro výrobu granulátu k potravinářským účelům / Assessment of the suitability of PET flakes produced by PETKA CZ, Inc. company for the manufacture of granulates for food purposes

Šudomová, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the recycling of polyethylene terephthalate and its subsequent processing into the form of a regranulate meeting the parameters required for food use. A brief description of recycling technology, PET flake quality rating and input material contamination is provided. Additionally, legislation regarding recycling for food purposes is discussed and regranulation technologies are described. The suitability of these technologies for processing specific flake samples has been confirmed. In the experimental part, differences in the regranulate samples are compared using DSC and FT-IR. It has been found that there are no major differences between food quality samples. Tests were carried out on 200 PET bottles (bottle, label), on which the input material was divided into 16 groups. Groups that are unsuitable for recycling with this technology was defined. In addition, contaminants of the final product were examined. Their approximate composition was determined and the relationship between the labels of the bottles at the inlet and the impurities at the outlet was found. Appropriate solutions have been proposed to reduce this contamination

Ekonomika odpadového hospodářství / Economy of the municipal waste

Hrubý, Jan January 2008 (has links)
This thesis deals with economy of treating with municipal waste. The municipal waste, which is generated by citizens makes burden not only on public and private budgets, but also on environment. Importance of this burden rise regarding to continuous growth of volume of the municipal waste. This fact implicates need to set up cost efficient and permanent achievable solution. Nowadays there is a suggestion, prepaderd by the Ministry of environment, which suggest using returnable PET bottles, which are important part of the municipal waste. Potentional implementation of returnable PET bottles doesnt have influance only on yield of this type of waste, but it is connected with other parts of the municipal waste such as biological degradable municipal waste and mixed waste. Content of this thesis is presentation of the economic analysis of alternation for treating with three most important parts of the municipal waste on backround of fullfiling conditons set up by European union.

Bäckström, Karl-Johan, Eklund, Richard January 2022 (has links)
This study identifies which collection methods for the PET bottle are available for the waste and recycling phase on the Swedish market and which businesses are responsible for these methods. What adjustment is being made by the operations to achieve fossil-free, current collection methods, energy, and fuel use. Previous research, in-depth interviews and questionnaires form the basis for the results presented. The study also looks at environmental impact factors but also the complexity of municipal and nationwide activities, how they work with handling PET in the Swedish market and their use of fossil resources and what is done to reduce their environmental impact. The collection methods that the PET bottle can reach are residual waste, collection close to the property, recycling stations and pawn shops. The area of responsibility of the operations takes place both nationwide and at the municipal level. The current situation analysis indicates that businesses need to take additional measures to become completely fossil-free, but that there is a change with measures for energy and transport to achieve this. There are collection methods that enable recycling, but the sorting methods can be crucial for PET to be able to return to the correct material flow. You can see that the companies use renewable energy and fuel and that they are actively working towards becoming completely fossil fuel.
