Situation-Type Problems for Use in Elementary Accounting

The problem of this study is to develop a series of "situation-type" problems to be used in the teaching of the first course in elementary accounting at North Texas State College. The solutions for the problems were prepared contemporaneously with the problems to save the instructor's time when the problems are used. These problems are to include the phases of accounting of theory and principles in addition to the recording and classifying.

The Direct and Interactive Effects of Neighborhood Risk and Harsh Parenting on Childhood Externalizing and Internalizing Behavior

The present study investigated the direct and interactional effects of neighborhood disadvantage and harsh parenting on concurrent assessments and change in externalizing and internalizing behavior in toddlerhood. The study included 55 mothers and their children; families completed in-home assessments when children were 2 and 3 years of age. Mothers' reports were used to measure neighborhood disadvantage and children's problem behaviors. Observer ratings derived from a clean up task were used to measure harsh parenting. Four hierarchical regression equations were computed to test each study hypothesis. Results indicated marginally significant effects of harsh parenting on externalizing problems at age 2. Surprisingly, harsh parenting and exposure to neighborhood risk did not significantly predict increases in externalizing behavior problems from age 2 to 3. Harsh parenting was marginally related to children's internalizing problems under conditions of high levels of neighborhood disadvantage and predicted increases in internalizing over time. The theoretical implications of the results are discussed.

Darbo tikslas - nustatyti 13 – 16 metų paauglių, turinčių mišrių elgesio ir emocinių sutrikimų, internalių ir eksternalių problemų lygį ir įvairovę. Tyrimo pradžioje keliama hipotezė, jog paaugliai, turintys mišrių elgesio ir emocinių sutrikimų, turi aukštesnį internalių bei aukštesnį eksternalių problemų lygį, nei tokių sutrikimų neturintys bendraamžiai. Tikslui pasiekti kėlėme šiuos uždavinius: įvertinti 13 - 16 metų paauglių, pasižyminčių mišriais elgesio ir emociniais sutrikimais, internalių bei eksternalių problemų lygį ir įvairovę. Palyginti 13 - 16 metų paauglių, turinčių mišrių elgesio ir emocinių sutrikimų, su tokio pat amžiaus paauglių, neturinčių emocinių sutrikimų, internalių ir eksternalių problemų lygį ir įvairovę. On the method of lines for singularly perturbed partial differential equations

Magister Scientiae - MSc / Many chemical and physical problems are mathematically described by partial differential equations (PDEs). These PDEs are often highly nonlinear and therefore have no closed form solutions. Thus, it is necessary to recourse to numerical approaches to determine suitable approximations to the solution of such equations. For solutions possessing sharp spatial transitions (such as boundary or interior layers), standard numerical methods have shown limitations as they fail to capture large gradients. The method of lines (MOL) is one of the numerical methods used to solve PDEs. It proceeds by the discretization of all but one dimension leading to systems of ordinary di erential equations. In the case of time-dependent PDEs, the MOL consists of discretizing the spatial derivatives only leaving the time variable continuous. The process results in a system to which a numerical method for initial value problems can be applied. In this project we consider various types of singularly perturbed time-dependent PDEs. For each type, using the MOL, the spatial dimensions will be discretized in many different ways following fitted numerical approaches. Each discretisation will be analysed for stability and convergence. Extensive experiments will be conducted to confirm the analyses.

Efficient Variable Mesh Techniques to solve Interior Layer Problems

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Singularly perturbed problems have been studied extensively over the past few years from different perspectives. The recent research has focussed on the problems whose solutions possess interior layers. These interior layers appear in the interior of the domain, location of which is difficult to determine a-priori and hence making it difficult to investigate these problems analytically. This explains the need for approximation methods to gain some insight into the behaviour of the solution of such problems. Keeping this in mind, in this thesis we would like to explore a special class of numerical methods, namely, fitted finite difference methods to determine reliable solutions. As far as the fitted finite difference methods are concerned, they are grouped into two categories: fitted mesh finite difference methods (FMFDMs) and the fitted operator finite difference methods (FOFDMs). The aim of this thesis is to focus on the former. To this end, we note that FMFDMs have extensively been used for singularly perturbed two-point boundary value problems (TPBVPs) whose solutions possess boundary layers. However, they are not fully explored for problems whose solutions have interior layers. Hence, in this thesis, we intend firstly to design robust FMFDMs for singularly perturbed TPBVPs whose solutions possess interior layers and to improve accuracy of these approximation methods via methods like Richardson extrapolation. Then we extend these two ideas to solve such singularly perturbed TPBVPs with variable diffusion coefficients. A qualitative study was done to explore and describe the problems of teenage mothers in the southern Hho-Hho region of Swaziland. Ten teenage mothers wrote naive sketches and fourteen teenage mothers were interviewed. The findings of the research indicated a lack of support for the teenage mother in all the dimensions studies in this research which include physical, social, cultural, emotional, spiritual, economical and educational. This lack of support systems were found to be the paramount problem and need urgent attention. The vicious circle of lack of support, ignorance, interruption of education and unplanned motherhood can only be addressed if all stakeholders including the multidisciplinary team actively participate to prevent teenage pregnancy and provide support for teenagers in general. / Nursing Science / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Higher Order Numerical Methods for Singular Perturbation Problems.

<p>In recent years, there has been a great interest towards the higher order numerical methods for singularly perturbed problems. As compared to their lower order counterparts, they provide better accuracy with fewer mesh points. Construction and/or implementation of direct higher order methods is usually very complicated. Thus a natural choice is to use some convergence acceleration techniques, e.g., Richardson extrapolation, defect correction, etc. In this thesis, we will consider various classes of problems described by singularly perturbed ordinary and partial differential equations. For these problems, we design some novel numerical methods and attempt to increase their accuracy as well as the order of convergence. We also do the same for existing numerical methods in some instances. We &macr / nd that, even though the Richardson extrapolation technique always improves the accuracy, it does not perform equally well when applied to different methods for certain classes of problems. Moreover, while in some cases it improves the order of convergence, in other cases it does not. These issues are discussed in this thesis for linear and nonlinear singularly perturbed ODEs as well as PDEs. Extrapolation techniques are analyzed thoroughly in all the cases, whereas the limitations of the defect correction approach for certain problems is indicated at the end of the thesis</p>
