THE HIGH FREQUENCY AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD MATERIALSRasafar, Hamid, 1954- January 1987 (has links)
New VLSI and VHSIC devices require increased performance from electronic packages. The major challenge that must be met in materials/process development for high complexity and high speed integrated circuits is the processing of even larger amounts of signals with low propagation delay. Hence, materials with low dielectric constant and low dissipation factor are being sought. In this investigation the dielectric properties of the most commonly used composite materials for printed circuit boards, Teflon-glass and Epoxy-glass, were measured in the frequency and temperature intervals of 100 HZ-1 GHZ and 25-260°C, respectively. From the measured results, it is concluded that Teflon-glass is more suitable for the board level packaging of high performance circuits due to its lower dielectric constant and low dissipation factor.

AXIOMATIC DESIGN OF BEARING PACKAGING AUTOMATION2014 January 1900 (has links)
QA bearing technologies Ltd. (hereafter QA) is a custom manufacturer of bearings in a variety of types and sizes. This research concerns one of the processes in QA’s bearing manufacturing in which the individual bearings, once assembled, are packaged to prevent corrosion and attack from any environmental influence. QA currently employs a manual process, which is time-consuming and significantly limits QA’s productivity. This greatly raises a need to improve this process through the design of an automated process for bearing packaging. Various kinds of packaging machine are available in the market for this application. However, most of them are designed for general packaging purpose and simply combining them may result in the functional overlap as applied to the packaging process. This research aims to design an automatic bearing packaging system (ABPS) based on an advanced design theory, i.e., Axiomatic Design Theory (ADT).
In the first part of this research, a set of general functional requirements (FRs) and constraints (CONs) were defined specifically based on the needs from the customers. All FRs were maintained independent to each other such that the following design wouldn’t result in functional overlap. Then, design parameters (DPs) in general level were created to satisfy the defined FRs, each being a functionally independent subsystem consists of both custom-design components and products existing in the market. The second part of the research was to decompose the FRs and DPs based on independent axiom of ADT into further levels until the conceptual design was accomplished. In this process, acceptable alternatives in different hierarchies were proposed for comparison in the decision making process. Also, the relationship between FRs and DPs in the same level was always maintained one-to-one, which allows readily for modification in future, if needed.
In the third part of this research, the information axiom of ADT was utilized to find the best solution from alternatives. For this, each alternative was evaluated in terms of the information content that reflects the possibility of satisfying the objective FR. The one with least information content was determined as the best alternative. As a result of this research, two solutions with different degree of automation were recommended for the bearing packaging system. The first solution is featured with higher degree of automation and capable of packaging bearings with limited human interface and as result, the total cost for its implementation is relatively high. The second solution integrates semi-automated machines and simplified sealing strategy and as such, the cost for its implementation is significantly reduced.
After the conceptual design is complete, ADT is further applied in the detailed design level for oiling system with custom-designed components and mechanism. For the design of certain DPs, the design process applying ADT is used to compare with conventional methods, proved to be more efficient and simplified. Eventually, the final solution proposed for the detailed design of oiling system is consistent with independent axiom of ADT.

Processing of NITI reinforced adaptive solder for electronic packaging / Processing of nickel titanium reinforced adaptive solder for electronic packagingWright, William L. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / Solder joints provide both electrical and mechanical interconnections between a silicon chip and the packaging substrate in an electronic application. The thermomechanical cycling (TMC) in the solder due to the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the silicon chip and the substrate causes numerous reliability challenges. This situation is aggravated by the ongoing transition to lead-free solders worldwide, and the trend towards larger, hotter-running chips. Therefore, improved solder joints, with higher resistance to creep and low-cycle fatigue, are necessary for future generations of microelectronics. This study reports in the development a process to fabricate solder joints with a fine distribution of shape memory alloys (SMA) NiTi particulates. The microstructure and interface zone of the as-reflowed solder-SMA composite has been characterized. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Crossmodal correspondences and attention in the context of multisensory (product) packaging design : applied crossmodal correspondencesVelasco, Carlos January 2015 (has links)
The term 'crossmodal correspondence' refers to the tendency for people to match information across the senses. In this thesis, the associations between taste/flavour (tastants and words) information with shapes and colours is investigated. Furthermore, such correspondences are addressed in the context of multisensory packaging design. The focus in this thesis is on the way in which taste/flavour information can be communicated by means of the visual elements of product packaging. Through a series of experiments, I demonstrate that people associate tastes and the roundness/angularity of shapes, and that taste quality, hedonics, and intensity influence such correspondences. However, packaging roundness/angularity does not seem to drive these associations. Additionally, I demonstrate that culture and context systematically influence colour/flavour associations. Importantly, the results reported in this thesis suggest that taste/shape correspondences can influence taste expectations as a function of the visual attributes of product packaging. The results reported here also reveal that colour can influence the classification of, and search for, flavour information on a product’s packaging. It turns out that the strength of the association between a flavour category and a colour is crucial to such an effect. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the theories of crossmodal correspondences, its applications, and directions for future research.

Packaged Little LivesCovher, Corbin R 14 May 2014 (has links)
This document attempts to capture the main ideas and evolution of my art making process during the three years of graduate studies at the University of New Orleans. My art making practice is an ever-evolving exploration of materials and ideas. Through art processes and experimentations I am able to overcome negative feelings about my role in society. I get lost in my process making things, thinking about things, and trying to come up with new ideas for the world. I am attempting to heighten mundane materials like cardboard, crayons, foams and concrete with intuitive abstract shape making. I am trying to present materials to the viewers in a way that is unusual and engaging. It is my hope that in doing so they might think about similar things that I think about while making the objects.

Matte matters: When matte packaging increases perceptions of food naturalnessMarckhgott, Eva, Kamleitner, Bernadette January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Matte surfaces, that is, those that are dull or lusterless not glossy and shiny, are a current trend in packaging. But does packaging surface affect what consumers think about the product inside it? We focus on consumers' perception of packaged food products at the point of sale. Using three experiments, we show that food in matte packaging can be perceived as more natural. Notably, the effect of matte packaging only holds for rather artificial products. When matte packaging increases perceptions of product naturalness, consumers also expect the product to be tastier and are more likely to buy it.

En alternativ image : Hur alternativa förpackningar utvecklar varumärkets imageGrundström, Moa, Gammelgård, Mathilda January 2019 (has links)

January 2015 (has links)
As limitações da pesquisa destacam a oportunidade e necessidade de pesquisas futuras, abrangendo além de um maior número de especialistas, também consumidores / Abstract: The main issues that dominate the packaging technology area are related to the use of materials and recycling possibilities, however, their potential for waste reduction / food losses is still little explored. In this context, this research aimd to identify and analyze the main barriers to innovations in packaging systems that help to reduce waste and / or loss of fresh beef. The research method used was the experts interview working in research and industry, and they were selected for working directly with packaging, and where possible, with beef. The main barriers identified in this study were: high cost of implementation, lack of knowledge, sharing of information in the chain and with consumers, cold chain integration, strong culture of Brazilian consumers and low availability of qualified suppliers. It was identified that the Brazilian consumer is not demanding regarding the packaging of beef products, and the buying decision is still made based on the comparison of appearance of meat and price. Thus, packaging suppliers and the food industry only search for technologies in packaging based on cost, omitting the innovations. This research helps to identify some barriers to the adoption of innovations in beef products packaging, and propose suggestions to mitigate them. Thus, this study should help both researchers and companies involved in the production chain of beef to understand and overcome the barriers highlighted using packaging as a strategic link in the waste reduction. The research limitations highlight the opportunity and need for further research, in addition to covering a larger number of expert and also consumers / Mestre
