Challenging the Trinidad and Tobago panorama construct: an analysis of compositional styles of Ray Holman, Liam Teague, and Andy Narell

Ziegler, Aaron Michael 01 May 2015 (has links)
At the first Panorama in 1963, Anthony "Tony" Williams presented an arrangement of Slinger "Mighty Sparrow" Francisco's "Dan Is The Man (In The Van)" that would set the standard for Panoramas to come. As the competition continued arrangers like Bobby Mohammed, Earl Rodney, Jit Samaroo, and many others continued to present new ideas and techniques that became part of what is known as the "Panorama formula." In its current configuration the Panorama formula can be seen as an amalgamation of techniques introduced by past arrangers, but some argue that the formula has become too predictable and that arrangers who present works continuing to push the boundaries of the competition are often not rewarded, and perhaps punished for their efforts. This document will explore, through the history of the competition and the development of past arrangers, how the formulaic procedures of Panorama have developed. In addition, the recent works of arrangers Ray Holman, Liam Teague, and Andy Narell will be examined to see how they have challenged the expectations of the Panorama judges and the steelband community.

Gourichon, Stéphane 02 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)

Castillo Martínez de Olcoz, Ignacio Javier 07 February 2006 (has links)
This thesis deals with notions and ideas of light throughout history, especially in the plastic arts. It begins with a study of ideas and myths about light in Antiquity, especially the symbolism of light and myths about shadows, and then proceeds to see the role of art in both the plastic and the performing arts culminating in the development of film and cinema.Ideas about light exist in all civilizations and cultures and are expressed in important symbols. Human control of both natural and artificial light are a key part of any artistic expression. This thesis studies the meaning of light in bellas artes. First, we analyze the symbolism of light in religious architecture, and then proceed to prove that painters have always been the source of inspiration of cinema's directors of photography, who tend to see themselves as painters for they "paint" light. The thesis surveys the spectacles of light and shadows throughout history, such as the theater of shadows, the camera obscura (dark chamber), the magic lantern, the panorama, the diorama and cinema. Two particular case studies of artistic use of light are the evolution of light technique in theater by Appia and Fortuny, and the interplay of light and water by the Catalan engineer Buigas.Concerning cinema, we make a historical analysis of the most relevant changes brought up by electricity, which allowed to control both sound and light. Sonoro cinema allowed major innovations for light experts, who also benefited by inventions such as the color film or the Fresnel lens. We survey the most important technological advances that have contributed to new ways to paint light. Our historical survey thus illuminates the long and cumbersome process of innovation to express and control the "Sense of light".

Tisserand, Sylvie January 2010 (has links) (PDF)

User interaction of one-dimensional panoramic images for iPod Touch

Kottamasu, V.L.Phanikumar January 2012 (has links)
Modern handheld devices such as smart phones and tablets have become popular for capturing and viewing panoramic images, but navigation in these devices is a challenging task due to small screen size. In this thesis work, investigation is done for similarities and differences between two user interaction techniques of one-dimensional cubical panorama images. This work is carried out on a fourth generation Apple iPod Touch. The first user interaction technique swipe (drag-based panning) is developed using touch-gestures, while the second technique look-around (device-orientation panning) is developed using motion-sensors such as gyroscope and accelerometer for device-orientation. Both these techniques were implemented for touch-screen devices for an angle of 360 degrees. In the swipe technique, the navigation is done by using finger movements on the screen, while in the look-around based panning technique the navigation is done by moving the device direction physically in space through an angle of 360 degrees. The experiments were conducted on 20 participants for the two panning techniques. The results have shown that the look-around based panning technique offers a better user interaction compared to swipe based panning technique. Look-around based panning technique is natural and more free to move physically in space. Swipe based panning technique is easy to use in some situations and it does not require any physical space to move around the system.

The Study of Aerial Imageries Stitching Based on SIFT Algorithm

Huang, Han-che 01 August 2009 (has links)
The ultimate goal of the development of aerial photogrammery is to acquire rapidly and accurately the ground measurements. However, traditional photogrammetric technologies, particularly in the continuous digital images stitching technique, is still very limited. In the past, the ground control points were used as the references for the image registration, however, it is very time and resource consuming, as well as human visual capability constraint. Accuracy and efficiency are two key factors which need to be enhanced to meet the practical requirement for aerial imageries stitching. The SIFT (Sale Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm was used in the computer vision to perform feature extraction in good condition. The extracted SIFT features are invariant to image scale, rotation, noise and change in illumination, and it is a robust and abundant feature extraction algorithm. SIFT algorithm extracts feature points from multi-scale space. For a large scale aerial image containing huge amount of image contents, it will spend a lot of time to extract features from imagery. Therefore, this study proposes a new method, called Inter-Grid Down-Sampling (IGDS) method, to reduce the image size and relative amount of image information to improve the computing efficiency. The correspondent extracted features are matched in the adjacent images with additional RANSAC outlier removal procedure to select correct and characteristic feature points. Finally the Hugin-Panorama Photo Stitching software is used to stitch all the continuous photogrammetric images for producing a panorama imagery of all flight lines. The experiment results indicate that sub-pixel accuracy for extracted feature points can be obtained when the down-sampling factor 3 was selected for the IGDS method, and it only needs half of the computing time. Compared to the Nearest-Neighbor Interpolation and Cubic Interpolation methods to reduce the image size, the IGDS method can increase more feature extraction efficiency without scarifying the location accuracy. When threshold value for SIFT was set between 0.4 to 0.6, we can achieve the largest correct matching rate. In addition, the RANSAC outlier removal procedure can effectively select the best matching feature points both in numbers and locations. For image stitching, the Hugin-panorama photo stitching software can effectively be used to match feature points and do geometric correction and color adjustment to obtain a consistent panorama imagery. Finally, the proposed method in this study can derive a low-variant in resolution and measurements significance for a stitching image from continuous aerial images.
