Recreation and representation : the Middle Ages on film (1950-2006)

Elliott, Andrew Brian Ross January 2009 (has links)
In evaluating the Middle Ages on film, this thesis combines two different critical approaches, drawn from historiography on one side and semiotics on the other. In the first chapter, I argue that historiographic criticism has largely undermined our belief in a monolithic, objective History, and that modern historical enquiry contains a tacit admission of its own subjectivity. In Chapter Two, I use these admissions to argue the case for history on film, demonstrating that in terms of the construction of history, the processes of filmmaking closely resemble those of ‘doing’ history, and that criticisms of historical films are often the same criticisms which Historians raise in respect of their own works of ‘pure history’. In the remaining chapters (3-6), I look at specific examples of types of historical character, drawn from the medieval separation of society into “those who work, those who fight and those who pray”, as well as “those who rule”. In each case, I adopt a similar methodological approach, conducting close cinematographic analysis on a range of film extracts in order to see how filmmakers have tried to construct the past visually in their representation of historical characters. Here my arguments move away from historical criticism to focus instead on aesthetics and cinematography. The overall theory is that there exist two fundamental approaches to the medieval past in film: the first iconic and syntagmatic, the second paradigmatic. Iconic approaches, I argue, work to try to recreate the lost medieval referent by using aesthetic ‘signifiers’ in order to communicate their significance to a medieval audience. The paradigm, on the other hand, works in the opposite way; in order to explain a medieval object, the filmmaker casts about for modern equivalents to use as metaphors. Where the icon recreates the object to communicate the concept, the paradigm communicates the object by re-presenting the concept.

Kunskaper om idealbilder eller levd religion ireligionskunskapsundervisningen

Thörnlund Persson, Maria January 2017 (has links)

The Development of the Kachruvian paradigm: A Descriptive Study

Yiyang Li (7013270) 14 August 2019 (has links)
This dissertation presents the development of the Kachruvian paradigm of world Englishes and sheds light on keynotions in each developmental stage of Braj Kachru’s research. It intends to answer the question: how was the Kachruvian paradigm of world Englishes formed? Thiswas not the initial aim of the project. Instead, its significance has two phases, a pre-project and post-project phase. The pre-project goal was an attempt to clarify various misunderstandings or misrepresentations of world Englishes as a field of study as well as a sociolinguistic phenomenon. However, when approaching the completion of this dissertation, the actual significance (the post-project) gradually shifted. It evolved into a working answer to the research question, that is what events and influences reveal the process of the development of what has come to be known as the Kachruvian paradigm of world Englishes. The beginning of the process can be dated back to Braj Kachru’s graduate school years, when he hesitated to affirm the linguistic and sociolinguistic existence of Indian English; his death marked the end of his development of the paradigm, but the field of world Englishes, which had reached global interest long before then, has continued to cultivate scholars of English varieties around the world. The description of the development of the paradigm undertaken in this dissertation is a close review of Kachru’s work over five decades (the 1960s to the 2000s).

Metafory šílenství: umlčení mýtotvůrci a porouchané mozky. / Metaphors of Madness: Silenced Myth-Makers and Disordered Brains.

Müller, Matyáš January 2016 (has links)
The work has basically three aims: 1st to map the wide range of various approaches in the current debate about madness, 2nd to formulate a specific theory of madness, 3rd to identify general philosophical problems the topic brings about, (a 4th aim is also outlined: to understand the presented theory in terms of therapeutic potential). The central thesis of this work is that insanity is an inherently ambiguous and elusive phenomenon and that trying to understand it we are using various metaphors borrowed from other areas, and consequently forget their metaphorical nature. The work is generally motivated by an effort to reconcile conflicting approaches, to understand them as complementary. It also wants to avoid creating an all-embracing synthesis on the one hand, and purely relativistic and pragmatic viewpoint on the other hand. The first part identifies four levels on which particular approaches understand madness as a problem: the level of the individual, the level of the collective, the transpersonal level and the existential level. At the end of the part, I discuss the possibilities and risks of creating a theoretical framework that would enable to understand various contradictory approaches on a common basis. In the second part, I develop my own analysis of madness. It is based on a...

Cohen, Ronny Nathan 30 January 2014 (has links)
Synchronicity can offer answers often more effective than causal reasoning and shows itself liable to categorization. Working hypothesis here is that this kind of apprehension of reality presents itself more developed in individuals belonging to a sphere more religious. To investigate the occurrence and perception of synchronistic way of apprehending reality in individuals of different types of religiosity were conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives of different religious cults and individuals supposed more Cartesian or unbelievers, for further phenomenological analysis. We bring here the analysis of interviews, on the one hand, an individual supposedly most affected by the phenomenon synchronistic - a Sufi practitioner - and, secondly, between the supposedly less affected, an atheist. It was noted clearly further development of a seizure synchronistic reality between individuals allegedly most affected by the phenomenon, and to the extent possible, it is thought particularities of the phenomenon of synchronicity, indicating the possibility to characterize it as a sacred event, according to the conceptions of the phenomenon presented sacral

The sustainability in question: paradigm or discourse matrix?

Meyer, Gustavo da Costa 14 October 2015 (has links)
With the contextual basis the contemporary environmental crisis, which has characteristics of civilizing crisis, this work aimed to put in discussion the idea of Sustainable Development (SD); following that, this important concept has been politically built and conceived in order to be the main answer to this environmental issue. Therefore, since the environmental crisis asks for the emergence of a new paradigm (which exceeds the so-called paradigm of simplification), that takes into account a change of cognitive mark and take in the space in its dynamics of production and reproduction of life and in their multiple territories. This research sought to check over the possible formation of sustainability as this complex paradigm, or, oppositely, if such notion comes down to a discursive matrix that, as such obscures the mains issues that should be considered by a paradigm of complexity and, consequently, new theoretical and methodological support. In this sense, the trace of methodological approach included the discussion of different conceptions about the notions of discourse and paradigm matrix, relating subsequently such topics to environmental issues and the notion of SD itself in its political and scientific bias. Although doubts remain, it was taken into account that the sustainability seems to really perform much more as a discursive matrix than a paradigm, which integrates a discursive matrix of the environment. Consequently, one can point that the SD is found in a limited specific institutional field, with research and policy oriented and influenced by hegemonic determinant agents of such a field, such as the World Bank, for instance. These, according to certain development vision (as a synonym for economic growth and using the bias of neoclassical economics) and environmental issues (relegated to a management issue or appropriate environmental planning, without further understandings with respect to territorial dynamics in your all) influence the discourses that should pass through the environmental field, guiding even scientific knowledge. The notion of SD placed in this way does not represent, so any break with the paradigm of simplification, just being a discursive matrix that covers (and develops in practice) the core of such paradigm, which influences the practice of various social agents present in the territories. Considering as possible disruptions to the discursive matrix of the environment, an attempt to present and discuss also two schools of thought, or collective thinking, posing as potential new theoretical and methodological contributions, observing perhaps with a paradigm of complexity that takes into account mainly the notions of wholeness environmental complexity

A novel eye tracking paradigm for detecting semantic and phonological activation in aphasia

Campbell, Rachael Elizabeth 24 July 2018 (has links)
Many persons with aphasia (PWA), who have trouble communicating after a stroke, have difficulty naming objects, frequently producing speech errors. Picture (confrontation) naming tasks are commonly used to assess the presence and/or severity of naming difficulties, but these tests do not adequately capture the underlying cause of impairment. This project addresses the limitations of the standard picture naming paradigm by incorporating the measurement of eye movements, thereby providing a precise estimate of participants’ visual attention during the task. While prior studies have measured eye movements to distractor pictures when a spoken word is presented, to our knowledge no eye tracking studies have examined picture naming with written distractors in aphasia. Using a novel approach, we measured PWA’s and healthy controls’ eye movements as they selected the correct written word corresponding to the picture over other related words (semantically and sound-based distractors). The results of this project seek to: (1) indicate the feasibility of a novel eye tracking paradigm to study both intact and impaired lexical retrieval; (2) provide detailed information about the nature and time course of impaired naming; and (3) yield insight into the relative preservation of semantic and phonological representations in aphasia.

Altmetri : ett delfält i utveckling / Altmetrics : a Subfield in Development

Ahmetspahic, Narcisa January 2014 (has links)
Altmetrics, a subfield of informetrics, is still in development. The aim of this thesis is to explore; the significance altmetrics may have in the LIS field, and to define the new perspectives altmetrics offer in comparison to traditional metrics. The research questions are:- How can altmetrics affect research assessment?- How does altmetrics position itself towards traditional metrics?- How could altmetrics influence the LIS field?A qualitative content analysis was used as a method. The analysis of a sample of ten peer reviewed articles was based on a coding scheme with eleven codes. The sample was selected using Web of Science, Scopus, the Altmetrics Bibliography and chain search model. Kuhns paradigm concept was used as a theoretic framework together with the concepts Technologies of control (traditional metrics) and Technologies of narcissism (altmetrics) developed by Wouters and Costas. The results show a beginning of a paradigm shift in the research assessment field. Technologies of control with traditional metrics as measure of quality co-exist with the Technologies of narcissim using altmetrics for measuring a researchers impact on society. Altmetrics can be regarded as a complement to traditional metrics capable of evaluating research in four new perspectives: To evaluate the whole readership Potentially benefiting narrower fields Evaluation in realtime Evaluation of research productsThe significance altmetrics may have for the LIS field is to be used as an instrument for information mediation. / Program: Bibliotekarie
