Congestion Mitigation for Planned Special Events: Parking, Ridesharing and Network ConfigurationJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation investigates congestion mitigation during the ingress of a planned special event (PSE). PSEs would impact the regular operation of the transportation system within certain time periods due to increased travel demand or reduced capacities on certain road segments. For individual attendees, cruising for parking during a PSE could be a struggle given the severe congestion and scarcity of parking spaces in the network. With the development of smartphones-based ridesharing services such as Uber/Lyft, more and more attendees are turning to ridesharing rather than driving by themselves. This study explores congestion mitigation during a planned special event considering parking, ridesharing and network configuration from both attendees and planner’s perspectives.
Parking availability (occupancy of parking facility) information is the fundamental building block for both travelers and planners to make parking-related decisions. It is highly valued by travelers and is one of the most important inputs to many parking models. This dissertation proposes a model-based practical framework to predict future occupancy from historical occupancy data alone. The framework consists of two modules: estimation of model parameters, and occupancy prediction. At the core of the predictive framework, a queuing model is employed to describe the stochastic occupancy change of a parking facility.
From an attendee’s perspective, the probability of finding parking at a particular parking facility is more treasured than occupancy information for parking search. However, it is hard to estimate parking probabilities even with accurate occupancy data in a dynamic environment. In the second part of this dissertation, taking one step further, the idea of introducing learning algorithms into parking guidance and information systems that employ a central server is investigated, in order to provide estimated optimal parking searching strategies to travelers. With the help of the Markov Decision Process (MDP), the parking searching process on a network with uncertain parking availabilities can be modeled and analyzed.
Finally, from a planner’s perspective, a bi-level model is proposed to generate a comprehensive PSE traffic management plan considering parking, ridesharing and route recommendations at the same time. The upper level is an optimization model aiming to minimize total travel time experienced by travelers. In the lower level, a link transmission model incorporating parking and ridesharing is used to evaluate decisions from and provide feedback to the upper level. A congestion relief algorithm is proposed and tested on a real-world network. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2019

Bygga för ombyggnad : Från parkeringshus till studentbostäder / Building for rebuilding : From a parking garage to student housingHeimonen, Antonio, Malmsten, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
This examination paper is based on a suggestion from our business world contact Sara Eriksdotter who is employed by Haninge Municipality. The project proposal is based on convertible buildings. The goal is to build a multi-storey car park which in the future can be rebuilt into an apartment block. The idea is based upon Haninge Municipality’s plan on working for the reduction of automobile usage, which in the long term will lead to a decreased need of parking spaces for cars than what it is today. At the same time, Haninge Municipality wants to take the lasting need of housing into account. Our objective with this degree project has been to produce drawings and illustrations that visualize our project proposal of a convertible building; in this case the project proposal concerns a building that will manage the conversion from a multi-storey car park into an apartment block destined for students. The work process to achieve the goal started with a study of literature in books, internet and an interview. The literature was consolidated into a list of absolute requirements which is needed to achieve the functions of the buildings in the project. The list is also based on an analysis of the area which was done partly to create a feeling of the total impression that the building will create and partly to create a simple site plan of the area, because there was none available. With the help of the lists a 3D-model was created of the building to visualize the results. The 3D-model works as an aid to present the vision of the project and it provides a greater understanding for the building in its intended environment. The modelling programs used to create and refine the 3D-model are: Revit, Sketchup and Photoshop. The results are presented as drawings of the multi-storey car park and the student housing, drawings of the construction and a simplified building description. Additionally we have included furnishing suggestions for three types of apartments along with illustrations of the 3D-model in its intended environment. We hope that convertible buildings will become an accepted and recognized concept where new buildings in the future will be prepared to fulfil functions other than its original function.

Parking Assistance SystemVasantha, Saavan, Kunuthuru, Jayanth January 2021 (has links)
In this modern era, it has been very difficult for a driver to judge the distance between a vehicle and obstacle while parking in a blind spot areas like garage. The driver should be aware of the surroundings in order to park a vehicle safely without any damage. But without any guidance it will be difficult for a driver to judge the distance manually which in most of the cases ends up in a collision. This causes damage of property and sometimes leads to the injuries to the people. In this proposed work, a Parking Assistance system is introduced to avoid the collision between a vehicle and an obstacle while parking in a blind spots. While parking, the System detects the presence of obstacles and alerts the driver accordingly. The main objective of this project is to build a system which is used to avoid the collision between a vehicle and an obstacle while parking in a blind spot areas like garage. Parking Assistance System uses ultrasonic sensor to calculate the distance between a vehicle and an obstacle. Arduino board is used as the microcontroller. LED's are used to indicate the respective zones of the vehicle while parking, LCD is used to display the distance between the vehicle and obstacle. A buzzer is used to warm the driver and the people present around the vehicle when the vehicle is too close to the obstacle. The proposed system makes the driver fully aware of the surroundings while parking a vehicle. Parking Assistance System is wall mounted device which is designed to guide and help the driver to park a vehicle safely without any damages while parking in a blind spot areas like garage. The manual efforts to calculate the distance can be avoided and helps in reducing the time consumption. This parking system can be useful and needed to avoid the collision while parking. It prevents accidents and damages caused during the parking.

Parkering av delade elsparkcyklar, från friflytande till fasta platser : - Effekter och åsikter kring parkeringsförbudet utifrån användarnas, kommunernas och operatörernas perspektiv / Parking of shared e-scooters, from free-floating to fixed spots : - Effects and opinions regarding the parking ban from the perspective of users, municipalities and operatorsRABUN, HAWLER, HUQ, PREM January 2023 (has links)
The Swedish Government announced on June 15, 2022 that electric scooters will no longer be allowed to park on pedestrian and bicycle lanes starting from September 1, 2022, except at designated bicycle racks or other designated parking areas. This measure has been taken to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects and opinions regarding the parking ban in Stockholms stad, with a focus on users, municipalities, and operators. The report combines quantitative and qualitative methods, including surveys, interviews, and data analysis, to analyze various effects and opinions regarding the parking ban. The results show that users, municipalities, and operators perceive the implementation of parking zones as positive for the urban environment bypromoting increased orderliness and cleanliness. However, there is a downside in terms of longer walking distances to destinations and reduced convenience, as door-to-door travel is no longer as feasible. Complaints about illegal parking have decreased among the general public, but there have been other requests from users and operators regarding the placement of parking zones. The municipalities Stockholms stad and Göteborgs Stad agree that a well-developed infrastructure for privately owned bicycles and shared electric scooters is crucial for implementing the parking ban. This study ultimately demonstrates that the introduction of the parking ban has had a negative impact on the usage of electric scooters in Stockholm's inner city.

Design And Implementation Of Wireles Sensor Networks For Parking Management SystemKora, Sudhir Chandrasekar 01 January 2005 (has links)
The technology of wirelessly networked micro sensors promises to revolutionize the way we interact with the physical environment. A new approach to solve parking-related issues of vehicles in parking lots using wireless sensor networks is presented. This approach enables the implementation of the Parking Management System (PMS®) in public parking lots found in Airports, Commercial Buildings, Universities, etc. The design architecture of the sensor nodes is discussed here. An overall view of the sensor network, which covers the whole of the parking lot, is also summarized. Detailed description of the software architecture that supports the hardware is provided. A sample experiment for detecting the movement of vehicles by placing the sensor nodes allowing vehicles to pass over it is performed. The readings are sent to a local database server, which gives an indication of the actual number of vehicles parked in the building at any time. This application-oriented project also identifies important areas of further work in power management, communication, collaborative signal processing and parking management.
