A Data Analytics Framework for Regional Voltage Control

Modern power grids are some of the largest and most complex engineered systems. Due to economic competition and deregulation, the power systems are operated closer their security limit. When the system is operating under a heavy loading condition, the unstable voltage condition may cause a cascading outage. The voltage fluctuations are presently being further aggravated by the increasing integration of utility-scale renewable energy sources. In this regards, a fast response and reliable voltage control approach is indispensable. The continuing success of synchrophasor has ushered in new subdomains of power system applications for real-time situational awareness, online decision support, and offline system diagnostics. The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a data analytic based framework for regional voltage control utilizing high-speed data streams delivered from synchronized phasor measurement units. The dissertation focuses on the following three studies: The first one is centered on the development of decision-tree based voltage security assessment and control. The second one proposes an adaptive decision tree scheme using online ensemble learning to update decision model in real time. A system network partition approach is introduced in the last study. The aim of this approach is to reduce the size of training sample database and the number of control candidates for each regional voltage controller. The methodologies proposed in this dissertation are evaluated based on an open source software framework. / Ph. D. / Modern power grids are some of the largest and most complex engineered systems. Voltage is one of the most important metrics to indicate the system condition. This dissertation develops a cost-effective control method to secure the power system based on the real-time voltage measurements. The proposed method is developed based on an open source framework.

Two-dimensional finite element analysis investigation of the heat partition ratio of a friction brake

Yes / A 2D coupled temperature-displacement FE model is developed for a pad-disc brake system based on a restricted rotational pad boundary condition. The evolution of pressure, heat flux, and temperature along the contact interface during braking applications is analysed with the FE model. Results indicate that different rotational pad boundary conditions significantly impact the interface pressure distribution, which in turn affects interface temperature and heat flux distributions, and suggest that a particular pad rotation condition is most appropriate for accurately modelling friction braking processes. The importance of the thermal contact conductance in the analysis of heat transfer in friction braking is established, and it is confirmed that the heat partition ratio is not uniformly distributed along the interface under normal and high interface thermal conductance conditions.

The assessment of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in ortho-substituted anilines by an NMR method

Yes / We describe the Δlog P method for the assessment of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IMHBs), and show that it is not a very general method of distinguishing between molecules in which there is an IMHB and molecules in which there is no IMHB. The ‘double’ Δlog P method of Shalaeva et al. is a much more reliable method for the assessment of IMHB but requires the synthesis of a model compound and the determination of no less than four water-solvent partition coefficients. In addition, it is difficult to apply to compounds that contain more than one hydrogen bond acidic group capable of IMHB. We then describe our NMR method of assessing IMHB, based on 1H NMR chemical shifts in solvents DMSO and CDCl3. We have determined 1H NMR chemical shifts for a number of ortho-substituted anilines and show that the only compound we have studied that forms an IMHB is methyl 2-methylaminobenzoate though there is no IMHB present in methyl 2-aminobenzoate. This apparently anomalous result is supported by both MM and ab initio calculations. The NMR method is much simpler and less time consuming than other methods for the assessment of IMHB. It provides a quantitative assessment of IMHB and can be applied to molecules with more than one hydrogen bond acidic group.

Novel routes to the synthesis and functionalization of metallic and semiconductor thin films and nanoparticles

The process of assembling metal nanoparticles at the interface of two liquids has received a great interest over the past few years due to a wide range of important applications and their unusual properties compared to bulk materials. The work in this thesis presents a low cost, simple and cheap synthesis of metal nanoparticles, core/shell structures and semiconductors followed by assembly of these particles between immiscible liquids. The aim of this thesis is divided to three parts (Summary of the experimental work of this thesis is in Table A1):1) To achieve a closed loop recycling for producing cadmium sulfide as powders and/or nanostructured thin films for solar cells or other optoelectronic devices applications. A series of bis(dialkyldithiocarbamato)cadmium(II) were used for this approach. Bis(dioctyldithiocarbamato)cadmium(II) complexes proved to be the optimal alkyl chain for this process. The approach can be extended to other metal sulfides such as those of Zn, Pb, Cu, or Fe and many transition metals and oxides.2) To explore the phenomena of exchange bias in very small size particles (5 nm) of Ni/NiO (core/shell structure) obtained by solution phase synthesis. Ferromagnetism (FM) due to exchange bias is well established in the case of larger particles with diameters over 10 nm. However, sub 10 nm magnetic structures synthesized by solution phase have never been found to be ferromagnetic at room temperature. These Ni/NiO nanocrystals with ferromagnetic properties at room temperature were among the smallest and strongest magnets made in solution. Similar magnets can be obtained using a rare class of high anisotropy materials nearly all of which feature precious metals. This work would lead to significantly cheaper magnetic particles suited for the mass market. The applications of this work can be applied to produce viable storage devices and the other possibility is to disperse these nanocrystals in solution and use it to make ferrofluids which have a number of mature applications. Functional device architectures of these particles were rapidly and inexpensively produced as thin films using self-assembly of liquid/liquid interface process at room temperature by using octylamine as a surfactant.3) To synthesise and assemble submicron particles of silver, cobalt and nickel by using polyol methods and liquid/liquid interface, respectively. The effect of reaction conditions (solvent, precursor concentration, temperature, etc.) on synthesis and assembly of the particles was studied. Assembled cobalt and nickel as films are promising materials for spintronics, magnetic and magneto-electronics and biomedics. The nature and characteristics of the particles and their films were studied by a number of techniques such as SEM, EDX, TEM, p-XRD, UV-Vis, PL, FTIR, DLS and SQUID for magnetic measurements.

ANALYTIC AND TOPOLOGICAL COMBINATORICS OF PARTITION POSETS AND PERMUTATIONS

In this dissertation we first study partition posets and their topology. For each composition c we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition c. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module of a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by knapsack integer partitions. In the second half of this dissertation we study descent avoidance in permutations. We extend the notion of consecutive pattern avoidance to considering sums over all permutations where each term is a product of weights depending on each consecutive pattern of a fixed length. We study the problem of finding the asymptotics of these sums. Our technique is to extend the spectral method of Ehrenborg, Kitaev and Perry. When the weight depends on the descent pattern, we show how to find the equation determining the spectrum. We give two length 4 applications, and a weighted pattern of length 3 where the associated operator only has one non-zero eigenvalue. Using generating functions we show that the error term in the asymptotic expression is the smallest possible.

And then, we construct a system of equations -Standard Partition System of n-Dimensional Space- to generalize the properties of maximizing the number of regions made up by k partitioner in an n-dimensional space and look into the construction of each dimension. Also, we provide a more directly Combinatorial Argument by Algorithm for this kind of question. At last, we focus on the number of bounded regions and unbounded regions in sense of maximizing the number of regions.

Contribution à la compréhension des signaux de fluxmétrie laser Doppler : traitement des signaux et interprétations physiologiques

La compréhension du système cardiovasculaire périphérique est une clé indispensable pour le diagnostic précoce de nombreuses pathologies. Les signaux de fluxmétrie laser Doppler donnent des informations sur la microcirculation sanguine et permettent ainsi d'avoir une vue périphérique du système cardiovasculaire. Ce travail de thèse s'inscrit dans l'étude des propriétés de ces signaux physiologiques. Dans un premier temps nous présentons la technique de fluxmétrie laser Doppler et son utilité en recherche clinique. Nous détaillons ensuite l'analyse que nous avons menée afin d'obtenir des informations sur l'origine des fluctuations observées sur les signaux. L'implémentation de différents outils de traitement du signal dans les domaines temporel et fréquentiel a permis de montrer que ces fluctuations pourraient provenir, en partie, des propriétés physiologiques et/ou anatomiques de la zone étudiée. Afin d'étudier plus en détails ces fluctuations, nous avons ensuite mis en place une analyse multifractale des signaux de fluxmétrie laser Doppler. Les différents résultats obtenus ont permis de faire ressortir la possible implication des propriétés physiologiques de la zone étudiée dans la complexité des signaux de fluxmétrie laser Doppler.

The Twentieth-century Canon: An Analysis of Luigi Dallapiccola's Canonic Works from his 'Quaderno musicale di Annalibera'

The compositional technique of cross partitioning is one of Luigi Dallapiccola's most used twelve-tone devices. Through a detailed analysis of three contrapuntal canonic movements from Dallapiccola's Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera, I examine his use of cross partitioning as a motivic tool and as a referential collection. The development of the BACH motive and the derivation of tone-row statements reflects on Dallapiccola's extensive use of cross partitioning and his compositional principles used to achieve a sense of polarity. Upon a preliminary analysis based on set-theory analysis set out by Joseph Straus I draw an interpretive analysis through Alegant's cross partitioning model as well as develop my own set of parameters for interpretation in regards to polarity which is based on intervallic stability.
