Alexander Pope's Pastorals: a Study of Their Genesis and Evolution.

Prest, Harry Vincent Stewart January 1977 (has links)

The following study describes the evolution of Alexander Pope's Pastorals from their embryonic state in the earliest extant manuscript of them, the Houghton holograph, to their final resting place in the last authorized version of them, the posthumous 1751 edition of the poet's Works edited by his friend and literary executor, Rev. William Warburton. During this period the four poems -- "Spring", "Summer", "Autumn" and "Winter" -- and the brief critical treatise that accompanied them underwent hundreds of alterations, from single words to entire stanzas. A careful examination of the earliest extant version, in conjunction with a close study of the many changes and additions Pope made during this lifetime, provides a considerable amount of information concerning precisely what Pop endeavours to accomplish in creating this cycle of poems. A xerox copy of the Houghton holograph, together with a diplomatic transcript of it and a list of all subsequent authorized alterations to the text has been included to facilitate the study. Though some of the variants of this holograph have been cited (with varying degrees of accuracy) in previous editions of Pope's poetry, the manuscript itself has never before been reproduced in its entirety.

This study concentrates particularly upon the evolution of the Pastorals primarily because a comparison of the final version of any given passage with earlier versions often makes the poet's intentions clearer. Pope himself would seem to have been aware of this fact since he includes a number of variant readings from manuscripts and earlier printed texts in the notes he appends to these poems in the 1736 edition of his Works. Likewise, an examination of the sources of Pope's allusions to other poems in the pastoral tradition -- some though by no means all of which he also records in his 1736 notes -- sheds additional light on the poet's meeting. Though the vast majority of these allusions have been identified by previous scholars, their function in the poems themselves has to date been, for the most part, ignored. Yet, as this study demonstrates, these allusions and their contexts form an integral part of the poet's design, frequently providing an oblique, but highly pertinent comment upon what is actually taking place.

This study leads ultimately to a new reading of the Pastorals, one that focuses upon the numerous alterations and additions to them between 1704 -- the supposed date of the Houghton holograph which may be regarded as their first limited "edition" -- and 1751. Particular emphasis is placed on the major additions -- the dedicatory stanzas inserted into the first three poems in 1709, the revised version of the prose treatise added in 1717 and the apparatus of notes appended in 1736. For, in each of these Pope would appear to be providing his readers with the necessary direction to comprehend precisely what he is endeavouring to accomplish. To study Pope's creation without reference to these and the other factors previously mentioned is to miss much that is of the utmost importance in them. Only through a reconstruction of their evolution can be Pastorals be fully understood and appreciated.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A arquidiocese de São Paulo na gestão de D. Paulo Evaristo Arns (1970-1990) / Sao Paulo Archdiocese during d. Paulo Evaristo Arns\' conduct (1970-1990)

Rodrigues, Cátia Regina 04 March 2009 (has links)
Paulo Arns no período ora estudado. / The target of this study is to understand the model of Catholic Church in Sao Paulo built throughout the first twenty years of D. Paulo Evaristo Arns conduct (1970 1990) fifth metropolitan archbishop and third Sao Paulo cardinal. Some of his main pastoral initiatives were researched and analyzed due to its effect in and out of Sao Paulo, and among the members of the archdiocese of Sao Paulo and the population in general. The study was developed following two practices of investigation. Firstly, survey and analysis of primary and secondary sources about D. Paulo Arns life and religious career; about the history of the Catholic Church in the world, in Brazil and in Sao Paulo; about social, political and economic context in Brazil and Sao Paulo before and after the military regime. The second step of the research consisted of interviews with some priests, religious women and laymen who worked with D. Paulo Arns during the studied period. After the analysis of the pastoral initiatives selected, the conclusion it reached is that d. Paulo Arns would have had a religious/institutional and social political acting. In a way, there is a clear intention of strengthening the Catholic Church. He would have always motivated the formation of a greater number of churchgoers to take over errands that till then were restricted to priests, which would get a big contingent of missionaries to be and of new leaderships to conduct the development of base communities. In another way, he would have always tried to place himself in an explicit way in defense of social and political rights of all people, no matter the social class, religious beliefs and political ideologies. The study is divided in four chapters. On Chapter 1, it analyses the history of the II Vatican Council realization (1962-1965) and the Second Conference of the Latin American Episcopacy (1968), besides the content of the main documents published during these two events. On Chapter 2, it presents D. Paulo Arns brief historical biography, from his childhood to his staying in Petropolis (RJ) for more than ten years, where he would exercise several positions (academic, journalistic and religious). On Chapter 3, D. Paulo Arns first pastoral initiatives are highlightened when still an auxiliary bishop in Sao Paulo Archdiocese. On Chapter 4, some of the most remarkable initiatives of the history of the Church in Sao Paulo are analysed during the first twenty years of his archbishopric.

Solà Colomer, Xavier, 1972- 29 September 2005 (has links)
The present thesis tries to explain the implantation of the Catholic Reform in a few rural parish churches in the bishoprics of Girona (Valleys of Ridaura, Bas, Hostoles and Amer) and Vic (El Collsacabra and Valleys of Susqueda and Sau), from 1587 to 1800, from the post-Trent bishops Jaume Caçador and Pedro Jaime to Illustrated Tomàs de Lorenzana and Francisco de Veyan. The main sources of information are the pastoral bishop visits. These series are well preserved in the Arxiu Diocesà de Girona and the Arxiu Episcopal de Vic. We also have added some other documents: parish registers, notary books (from Rupit, Sant Feliu de Pallerols, El Mallol i Amer) and bishop printed material. We have contrasted the orders from the bishops visits with the decrees from the Council of Trent, the Constitutions of the Tarraconense Province and the Synodal Constitutions of Girona and Vic, and the artistic, architectural and archaeological evidences. All of them have shown the slow pace and the delay of the enterprise.
