The psychological well being of learners affected by HIV/AIDS / Tsihoane Maria TenyaneTenyane, Tsihoane Maria January 2006 (has links)
The aims of this research were to investigate the condition of the psychological well being of learners affected or orphaned by HIV/AIDS; investigate the way in which these learners perform at schools, investigate the nature and extent of social support these learners get from their families, community and society; investigate the condition of the physical well being of these learners; and make recommendations for their psychosocial support in order to enhance and strengthen their psychological well being. Findings from the literature review revealed that when HIV infected parents fall ill and die as a result of AIDS, usually a child or adolescent's life also often falls apart. This is an indication that with HIV and AIDS effects, the hardships hit well before children and adolescents are orphaned. This is to say, first a parent or breadwinner becomes ill with HIV or AIDS, and is unable to work. Then the entire family feels the economic impact - for example, children especially girls, must often drop out of school to go to work so that they can provide food for the family, care for their ill parents and look after their siblings. Such a phenomenon leads to the following psycho social problems in the lives of these children and adolescents: experience of grief and bereavement among children and adolescents affected by HIV/AIDS; introduction of major social change which may involve moving from a middle or upper -class urban home to a poor rural relative's home. It may involve separation from siblings, which is often done arbitrarily when orphaned children are divided among relatives without due considerations of their needs; increase in new labour responsibilities and instances of labour and work responsibility being given to children as young as five. Responsibilities and work in the household also include domestic chores, subsistence agriculture and provision of care giving to very
young, old and ill members of the household. Work outside of the home
may involve a variety of formal and informal labour, including farm work
and begging for food and supplies in both community and beyond; a phenomenon of irregular school attendance and absconding from school; suffering from malnutrition and may not have access to available health services; vulnerability to HIV infection. Their risk for infection arises from the early onset of sexual activity, commercial sex and sexual abuse, all of which may me precipitated by economic need, peer pressure, lack of supervision, exploitation and rape; likelihood that as the ratio of the dependent children increases as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, so will the chances of children being lured into trafficking and sexual exploitation; and manifestations of negative emotional responses such as fear, anger, depression, anxiety, feelings of dependency and so on.
Findings from the empirical research revealed that learners who formed the population sample of this research are unhappy and sad to see their family members, that is, their parents and breadwinners, being ill, and as a result their health is also psycho socially affected; they do not have and cannot afford school uniform and there are no people or relatives who can help them with money to buy school uniform; and their mental health is not in good condition and that they had been ill, suffering from stress in the last six months. Recommendations with psycho-educational implications were made in the last chapter. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2006.

In My Dreams: Creating a Song Cycle Based on the Poetry of Child Sex Trafficking Survivors, with music by Gerard YunJanuary 2010 (has links)
abstract: In My Dreams is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano, narrator, and piano, based on the poetry of survivors of childhood sex trafficking. It was created to raise awareness of trafficking through music and poetry through the expression of individual dreams and voices. In My Dreams recounts the devastating loss of childhood and celebrates empowering words of survival. The poetry was collected in poetry workshops held in Calcutta and Delhi India in January 2009. After the poems were selected, translated, and edited, composer Dr. Gerard Yun set them to music. This document outlines the process of creating and performing this unique humanitarian cycle. It also includes the full score, poetry, and composer's notes. Topics discussed include: experiences in finding and collecting poetry; collaboration with the composer, Dr. Gerard Yun; form and structure of the cycle; how each piece was molded to give voice to its inspired poem. Every song is analyzed from both a musical and performance perspective to give an account of the challenges and triumphs of the work and the process of undertaking it, as well as a better understanding of the background leading to its composition. / Dissertation/Thesis / Prologue / My Special Place / In My Dreams / Sometimes in the Night / I Thought I Wore the Watch Last Night / It's 2pm / I Can Hear Them / Create Another Earth for Me / In My Dreams II / Postlude / D.M.A. Music 2010

This research is a result of a theoretical reflection about on the work of Russian writer
dramaturgical Nikolai G?gol and the ways in which his initial experiments were crucial not
only on what concerns the building of own work identity, but also the construction of the
various forms of conception and creation of work dramaturgical and the way they have
influenced modern theatre. The work holds the analysis of gogoliana metadramaturgical
trilogy and comprising the following plays: The inspector general (1836), Leaving the theater
after the performance of a new comedy (1842) and Denouement of The inspector general
(1846). As such, are of particular interest to this work, the concepts of metadramaturgy and
writing performatic are fundamental to the analysis of the playwright's work. The study on
metadramaturgy will be worked from the analysis of de metalanguage and metatheatre so that
we can understand how to structure the idea of metadramaturgy and how this concept can be
used in the analysis of dramaturgical works. The idea of writing performatic includes the
study of the work from the performative bias, to understand the author and the reader/viewer
as protagonists of this relationship. From the studies of these two concepts, metadramaturgy
and writing performatic, shall be able to understand more deeply the different aspects of the
author's work, particularly in terms of past the relevance of his writing.

This research is the outcome of a theoretical-analytical consideration about the dramaturgical works of the british playwright Sarah Kane. About the way she structures and articulate an unceasing dialogue in her writings with the dead (the dramaturgical tradition); about the dead (the different ideas and notions about death in the urban life); and with the ones that are going to die, i.e. herself in autobiographical registers. The work focuses, specifically, at the analysis of her three last plays: Cleansed (1998), Crave (1998), and 4.48 Psychosis (2000), taking into consideration the development of the notions and elements that build the Thanatopoetic concept. The particular interests of this work are the notions of writing and performative writing applied to the analysis and contextualization of Kane?s work at the theatre history, since those notions allow the comprehension and approach of the plays through a performative bias. This work also identifies, develops and invests the notion of the ?Golem? character as a dual or shadow device, to discuss and enroll matters from the playwright?s intimate universe. For the discussion of these notions, the author uses ideas from Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Alex Beigui, Diana Klinger and Gershom Scholem. The study about death and the thanatological phenomenology will be conducted with the analysis of the writings, in its direct theme approach, or through references, quotations and metaphors used by the playwright to elaborate her ?Death poetic?, or Thanatopoetic. For that, the author takes into consideration the works of Edgar Morin, Emmanuel Levinas, Martin Heidegger, Arthur Schopenhauer, Heiner M?ller, Vladimir Safatle, among others. This work also identifies in Kane an author that pays tribute to the historical lineage of the Absurd theatre, without officially recognizing or assuming such affiliation, but instead transcending it with the overcoming of what was her biggest intent; the annihilation of and escape from the theatrical language.

Retreating to Restore: A Haven for the Athletic Mind and BodyVillegas, Arianna Rosario 04 June 2024 (has links)
Mental health struggles and suicide rates in athletic populations have been on the rise for the past two decades, with an even bigger increase since the pandemic. Disorders such as stress, depression, and anxiety have been the main causes for these struggles and fatalities. The growing rates of mental health disorders and suicide within this population indicate that athletes do not have the adequate resources to restore and improve their mental health. In some instances of presenting their troubles to coaches, staff, or teammates, their only advice is to seek help with on-campus resources or resources at home. Although this can be sound advice in some cases, this can also create the sense that there is no escape from what may be the cause of these mental obstacles.
The purpose of this thesis is to create a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, olympic, and retired athletes. Tucked away at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., in between existing amenities such as the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, the retreat allows for the continual use of existing amenities along with other resources and practices provided on-site. This retreat aims to provide spaces and resources at a location that teams or individuals can visit to allow for healing and education about these mental health disorders. This serene space in the middle of a chaotic big city will provide space for resting, performing, healing, and overall restoring which begins to break the barriers between what can be overcome in the feelings that may seem indomitable. / Master of Architecture / Mental health struggles and rising suicide rates among athletes have become increasingly concerning over the past two decades, with a significant spike since the pandemic. Stress, depression, and anxiety are the primary issues affecting this population, and current resources appear inadequate to address their needs. Often, athletes are advised to seek help from on-campus or home resources, which may not always be effective and can sometimes exacerbate feelings of entrapment.
This thesis proposes the creation of a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, Olympic, and retired athletes. Located at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., near amenities like the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, this retreat offers a peaceful environment for healing and education. By utilizing existing amenities and providing additional on-site resources and practices, the retreat aims to support athletes in their mental health journeys. This serene space in the heart of a bustling city will offer opportunities for rest, performance, healing, and overall restoration, helping athletes overcome mental health challenges.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-26 / The issue of creating productions of hybrid matrices has demanded, for more than three decades, the attention of several theater theorists (COHEN: 1995; LEHMANN: 2007). The study of philosophers (DELEUZE & GUATTARI: 1995) has contributed for new concepts of the scene. These artistic practices, depending on the context, have been
generating, more and more, new ways of staging. I will discuss the contamination caused by Antonin Artaud in contemporary theater, and the theater s infection by the performance, based on the thought of Barbara Browning (1995), from its capacity to penetrate and invade territories, and installs a new system. I affirm that the Totem Group (Recife PE) was contaminated by the performance and analyze two performative plays of the group, their points of convergence and separation. The first one is Ita, the search for the origin, the animal devir; the second is Caosmopolita, the body as a reflex of urbanity / A quest?o da cria??o de encena??es de matrizes h?bridas tem demandado, h? mais

Abstract: The V AD - vapor phase axial deposition program in Brazil started in 1996 through the initiative of the Laboratory of Integrated Quartz Cyc1e, of The State University of Campinas, FEMIDEMA. Performance-Based Analysis of a Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall BuildingHagen, Garrett Richard 01 June 2012 (has links)
PERFORMANCE-BASED ANALYSIS OF A REINFORCED CONCRETE SHEAR WALL BUILDING
Garrett Richard Hagen
In this thesis, a special reinforced concrete shear wall building was designed per ASCE 7-05, and then the performance was investigated using the four analysis procedures outlined in ASCE 41-06. The proposed building was planned as a 6-story office building in San Francisco, CA. The structural system consisted of a two-way flat plate and reinforced concrete columns for gravity loads and slender structural walls for seismic loads. The mathematical building models utilized recommendations from ASCE 41-06 and first-principle mechanics. Moment-curvature analysis and fiber cross-section elements were used in developing the computer models for the nonlinear procedures. The results for the analysis procedures showed that the building met the Basic Safety Objective as defined in ASCE 41-06. The performance levels for the nonlinear procedures showed better building performance than for the linear procedures.
This paper addresses previously found data for similar studies which used steel special moment frames, special concentric braced frames, and buckling restrained braced frames for their primary lateral systems. The results showcase expected seismic performance levels for a commercial office building designed in a high seismicity region with varying structural systems and when using different analysis procedures.
Keywords: reinforced concrete structural walls, shear walls, performance-based analysis, ETABS, Perform-3D, flat plate, two-way slab.
