In My Dreams: Creating a Song Cycle Based on the Poetry of Child Sex Trafficking Survivors, with music by Gerard Yun

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: In My Dreams is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano, narrator, and piano, based on the poetry of survivors of childhood sex trafficking. It was created to raise awareness of trafficking through music and poetry through the expression of individual dreams and voices. In My Dreams recounts the devastating loss of childhood and celebrates empowering words of survival. The poetry was collected in poetry workshops held in Calcutta and Delhi India in January 2009. After the poems were selected, translated, and edited, composer Dr. Gerard Yun set them to music. This document outlines the process of creating and performing this unique humanitarian cycle. It also includes the full score, poetry, and composer's notes. Topics discussed include: experiences in finding and collecting poetry; collaboration with the composer, Dr. Gerard Yun; form and structure of the cycle; how each piece was molded to give voice to its inspired poem. Every song is analyzed from both a musical and performance perspective to give an account of the challenges and triumphs of the work and the process of undertaking it, as well as a better understanding of the background leading to its composition. / Dissertation/Thesis / Prologue / My Special Place / In My Dreams / Sometimes in the Night / I Thought I Wore the Watch Last Night / It's 2pm / I Can Hear Them / Create Another Earth for Me / In My Dreams II / Postlude / D.M.A. Music 2010

The Incorporation of Greek Folk Melodies in the Piano Works of Yannis Constantinidis with Special Consideration of the 22 Songs and Dances from the Dodecanese

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Yannis Constantinidis was the last of the handful of composers referred to collectively as the Greek National School. The members of this group strove to create a distinctive national style for Greece, founded upon a synthesis of Western compositional idioms with melodic, rhyhmic, and modal features of their local folk traditions. Constantinidis particularly looked to the folk melodies of his native Asia Minor and the nearby Dodecanese Islands. His musical output includes operettas, musical comedies, orchestral works, chamber and vocal music, and much piano music, all of which draws upon folk repertories for thematic material. The present essay examines how he incorporates this thematic material in his piano compositions, written between 1943 and 1971, with a special focus on the 22 Songs and Dances from the Dodecanese. In general, Constantinidis's pianistic style is expressed through miniature pieces in which the folk tunes are presented mostly intact, but embedded in accompaniment based in early twentieth-century modal harmony. Following the dictates of the founding members of the Greek National School, Manolis Kalomiris and Georgios Lambelet, the modal basis of his harmonic vocabulary is firmly rooted in the characteristics of the most common modes of Greek folk music. A close study of his 22 Songs and Dances from the Dodecanese not only offers a valuable insight into his harmonic imagination, but also demonstrates how he subtly adapts his source melodies. This work also reveals his care in creating a musical expression of the words of the original folk songs, even in purely instrumental compositon. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2011

The role of emotions in stereotype threat : how emotions are implicated in the deleterious effect of stereotype threat on performances of stigmatized individuals ?

Chateignier, Cindy 12 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to examine the emergence of emotions in stereotype threat and its implications on performances of stigmatized individuals. We have two purposes. First, we want to show that stereotype threat situation triggers not only fear but also anger in stigmatized individuals. We postulate that endorsement or non endorsement to the group stereotype would respectively determine the emergence of fear or anger. Five experiments confirm our hypothesis. Then we examine processes through which fear and anger have deleterious effect on performances in stereotype threat situation. We suggest that fear and anger have deleterious effect because of the action tendencies and the cognitive processing of information that they trigger. Fear triggers an avoidance action tendency which could prevent stigmatized individuals to get involved in the task. Anger triggers an approach action tendency and a heuristic processing of information which could lead to rush towards the task without processing information deeply. Three experiments confirm our hypothesis. This research suggests an alternative explanation to the deleterious effect of stereotype threat on performances and highlights the importance to take into account the behavioral and cognitive consequences of emotions in the stereotype threat situation.

Incidence de la démence : tendances évolutives au cours du temps et déterminants / Incidence of dementia : secular trends and associated factors

Grasset, Leslie 20 September 2017 (has links)
Consequences of dementia are impacting not only patients, but also their family and even society; it has thus been highlighted as an important public health priority. Understanding temporal trends of this disease thus became a major research topic, critical for the future. This thesis aimed at investigating secular trends of dementia incidence as well as some of its components and consequences, trying tounderstand their determinants. In the first part of this work, we have brought further evidence toward a decreasing trend of dementia incidence, only found for women between the 90’s and the 2000’s in our study. Then, we have reported a global improvement of cognitive performance for younger elderly generations, potentially due to improvement early in life rather than to a slower decline across aging. Finally, we have evidenced a decrease in mortality without dementia and for demented women, as well as an increase of healthy life expectancy and survival with dementia. These results are in line with an improvement of health of older people during the last two decades, which is promising for the future.Further research to better understand these secular trends are yet needed ; it will help precise prevention strategies needed to reduce or delay dementia.

Squelettes algorithmiques méta-programmés : implantations, performances et sémantique / Metaprogrammed algorithmic skeletons : implementations, performances and semantics

Javed, Noman 21 October 2011 (has links)
Structured parallelism approaches are a trade-off between automatic parallelisation and concurrent and distributed programming such as Pthreads and MPI. Skeletal parallelism is one of the structured approaches. An algorithmic skeleton can be seen as higher-order function that captures a pattern of a parallel algorithm such as a pipeline, a parallel reduction, etc. Often the sequential semantics of the skeleton is quite simple and corresponds to the usual semantics of similar higher-order functions in functional programming languages. The user constructs a parallel program by combined calls to the available skeletons. When one is designing a parallel program, the parallel performance is of course important. It is thus very interesting for the programmer to rely on a simple yet realistic parallel performance model. Bulk Synchronous Parallelism (BSP) offers such a model. As the parallelism can now be found everywhere from smart-phones to the super computers, it becomes critical for the parallel programming models to support the proof of correctness of the programs developed with them. . The outcome of this work is the Orléans Skeleton Library or OSL. OSL provides a set of data parallel skeletons which follow the BSP model of parallel computation. OSL is a library for C++ currently implemented on top of MPI and using advanced C++ techniques to offer good efficiency. With OSL being based over the BSP performance model, it is possible not only to predict the performances of the application but also provides the portability of performance. The programming model of OSL is formalized using the big-step semantics in the Coq proof assistant. Based on this formal model the correctness of an OSL example is proved.

I bring to research the following questions: how these young people produce an experience with gothic from these meetings? What distinguishes or characterizes this experience? The work includes a description of the trajectories, events, performances, consumptions and affections that constitute and characterize these meetings, while seeking to describe the multiplicity of interactions and flows through the subjectivities of these young people. During the investigation, I use the concept of art world prepared by Becker (2010) as a methodological strategy into think of the gothic universe as a network of cooperation between individuals around artworks in the case, the Gothic art.

Davoglio, Rosane Silvia January 2011 (has links)
Introduction: Sense of Coherence (SOC) is a resource for coping with stressors that can make individuals more able to maintain and improve their health condition. It is related to quality of life and considered a predictor of health. There is a strong relationship between SOC and adopting healthy behaviors, positive perceptions of quality of life related to oral health, lower incidence of dental caries, tooth loss and improved periodontal condition. Objective: To investigate the relationship between SOC, Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (OIDP) and oral health clinical condition in individuals aged between 50 to 74 years in Porto Alegre/RS. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional population based study with a sample of 720 subjects, who were selected through stratified random sampling process in multiplestages. Data were collected through the SOC scale (SOC -13), the questionnaire OIDP, socioeconomic and use of dental services questionnaire, adapted from the Brazilian Oral Health Survey SB-Brazil 2003, and clinical examinations. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed by Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment using Stata 9.0 software. Results: In adjusted analysis, strong SOC was associated with absence of oral impact (PR=1.31; CI95%=1.09-1.56; p=0.003), low score of OIDP (PR=1.42; CI95%=1.18-1.71; p=0.000) and no impact on the performance smile (PR=1.29; CI95%=1.08-1.59; p= 0.014). Strong SOC was also associated with clinical outcomes, no need for prosthesis (PR=1.34; CI95%=1.04- 1.68; p=0.015) and greater number of teeth (PR=1.05; CI95%=1.01-1.11; p=0.033) after adjustment for co-factors. Conclusion: Our findings showed that the SOC construct was positively associated with quality of life related to oral health, supporting the hypothesis that individuals with strong SOC have a lower impact of oral health in the development of daily activities than those with weak SOC. The results also suggest that individuals with strong SOC have better oral health than those with a weak SOC, with higher number of teeth and less need for prosthesis.

This thesis aims to reflect on the art of storytelling in the city. The title aludes to Walter Benjamin’s classic, The Storyteller. Reflections on the work of Nikolai Leskov (from 1936). There were taken into consideration in this research investigation the experience of the researcher/storyteller and of some Brazilian raconteurs who act in the urban contexts. In a dialogue with philosophers, art and educators and contemporary thinkers, the central focus of this discussion is the paradox between the rebirth of the storyteller within cities in the last decades (with regards to the appreciation of the public word and of the enchantment) and, it’s alignment with the cultural practices of entertainment. This last point, thought under the enlightenment of Guy Debord (1931-1994) and his considerations about the spectacle society; and, Christoph Turcke (1948) thoughts about the excited society. This paradox will be seen on the interviews conducted with the storytellers, and also by the bibliographical research that approaches the art of contemporary storytelling. To reach this paradox it was necessary to retell some of the pathways for formation and acting of storytellers who will appear on the research as Brazilian icons of this comeback of the art of storytelling within cities, besides understanding the roots that originated the storytelling styles we see nowadays on social and public spaces, along with the kinds of stories which will mostly compound this raconteurs repertoires. Through a fictional dialogue between the researcher and the reference authors of this research it is explicit the paradox pointed above and also unfolded from other relevant questions referring to the ethical, aesthetical, poetical and political positioning of the storyteller nowadays.
